OBSCURE SPLATOON LORE FACT(?) OF THE DAY:

Octorpedoes are people. Yes, those flying exploding robot things. Octavio is a horrifically cruel mass murderer.

No, seriously.

How do I know this?

Well, it's simple.

Sanitized Octorpedoes exist.

Sanitization is the process of overriding one's consciousness with the collective consciousness of the blended Kamabo Co. applicants, yes?

The fact that an Octorpedo can be Sanitized means that it has a soul and a consciousness in the first place.

DJ Octavio, in his first boss fight, sends thousands of Octorpedoes at Agent 3 to explode (or only hundreds if you're fast enough at the game).

This means Octavio engineered a class of people who solely exist to explode and die, giving them consciousness for no reason other than to satiate the endless cruelty of the Old Testament octopus God that he is.

We all know that you were the more or less the bad guy in Splatoon 1, that the Octarians were only stealing electricity to survive after being forced to live underground for 100 years, and for that you kill them en masse, innocent people like Marina and Acht.

I think humanising the Octarians in 2 and 3 is why, starting with Octo Expansion, they switched up the plots to a more unambiguous "save the world" (prevent everyone from being mashed into tartar sauce/devolved into bear fuzz/bleached into white corals). That's why the Octarian enemies in OE and 3 are Sanitized/Fuzzy (they're undead, pretty much), because if you kept on killing regular Octarians, you'd think "my cod, what have I done?".

This, I imagine, is in turn because the Octarians were originally envisioned as sort of Super Mario-ish enemies, where they're just "defeated" and it doesn't matter, but as Splatoon started to take itself more seriously in worldbuilding, and embraced its themes of every person being an individual who matters, they couldn't keep dehumanising Octarians, who were just everyday people, after the initial Octo Valley plot and its rehash, Octo Canyon.

Nonetheless, despite the Octarians pretty clearly being in the right, Octavio is one cold motherfucker.

What the Octorpedoes being sentient, and in turn, Octavio being a remorseless butcher of his own people, proves; however, is that Splatoon doesn't give a single shit about morality. That's for the best, I think.

Its focus is being an ordinary world of sea-creature-people who inherit the dreams of a dead human race.

* Octavio is allowed to attend the Low Water Party mentioned in HaikaraWalker, and Grand Festival

* Octavio and Tartar are both allowed to participate in Splatocalypse

* Cuttlegear sells Octarian Army and Kamabo Co. clothes and nobody finds them offensive

* The people eat each other

* You're not punished for participating in Salmon Run, which is by all means a genocide in-universe

All of these things prove that Splatoon's world has no grand morality. It has existential and societal themes to it, as well as personal and emotional ones, that hit very hard, but it is never once about "who deserves what", and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Well, except maybe I would stop celebrating commercial-scale fishing if I were Splatoon, since that's rapidly wiping out all marine life in the real world.

Bobby looked over at the grey entity sitting beside him, scrolling through the group's chatlogs with a (presumably) content smile on his face.

He felt nervous for asking this question, but it was something that had been bothering him for quite a while.

"Hey, uh... Downbeat?"

"Hm?"

"Do you ever think about those... sanitized Octarians we've been fighting?"

"Yes." He then sighed. "I almost pity them, really. They won't ever get to see the paradise we're going to ascend to." The entity lamented, a wistful look in his eyes Bobby had rarely seen before.

He then sighed, slumping into the seat.

"Sometimes, I even wish I could take them with us to the surface, but... I don't really think there'd be anything to save, after what has been done to them."

Bobby shuddered. "Yeah... they're basically zombies, from what I can tell. Who even would do something like that? It's some messed-up stuff..."

For a moment, he could've sworn he heard Downbeat muttering something about "that blasted phone", but maybe he was just tired.

I found a kamabo co poster with an eye symbol on it(the square). There is an ad that has a big eye on it in splatsville ....

Is Tartar literally advertising ?

I believe tartar was advertising, especially in the octarian world, and i imagine that was how it acquired some of its test subjects. There is a kamabo ad in the haikara walker artbook on page 191. none of this is ever made super clear though.

but i really don't think the posters in inkopolis square in s3 are foreshadowing, but the opposite, they look old and torn, i think that's just showing what was there. tartar was destroyed in s2 and side order i think makes that fact clearer since that story is all about the recovery of the sanitized octarians. as for in splatsville, are you sure it's a kamabo co poster? do you have pictures? there's a few signs i can think of in splatsville that feature eyes and arent kamabo. The only kamabo-adjacent thing in s3 i can think of is the sea cucumber phones, with the logo being the same on the CQ cards and text being in deepsea script

but i dont think tartar has anything to do with this since it is Dead, but rather some other company in the deepsea (likely related to CQ Cumber).

MY THEORIES ABOUT ACHT'S EYES

Spoiler warning!!!

Acht's eyes are seen for a brief moment during side order's gameplay, and later where seen from pictures of Acht when they were not sanitized yet.

But thanks to @splatoongamefiles for providing more details of Dedf1sh's model, their eyes where confirmed to be of a Yellow colour.

But why are their eyes like this tho?

As far as we know about sanitized octarians, they were almost all potrayed with black scleras and teal irises (the sanitized octoling's eyes were never revealed, but they were probably the same as other octarians. Many fans got the memo since i saw a lot of fanarts of them with those eyes).

During Octo expension, Dedf1sh was said to be no different then any other sanitized octolings, drained from all willpower and no memories of who they were, being nothing then one of Tartar's pawns. Their passion for music was the only thing that Acht wasn't stripped from, so they could only play their tracks that echoed thought the Deep sea Metro.

In Side Order however, Acht doesn't seem to be this mindless pawn in the slightest anymore, their green skin and blue hair being the only thing that remain from their sanitization. Strangely, their eyes returned to their original colours. That's it. That's all that changed of Acht's appearence.

Why? How?

WORRY NOT!!! I THINK I KNOW WHY!!

First and foremost, Marina has got to have to have something to do with Acht's redemption arc since the two were close friends during their time in the army.

And also, the reason of Acht's eyes going back to their original colours is it may be because they were no longer under Tartar's control.

The black scleras and teal irises indicates that a sanitized octarian is still brain-washed by the "test-subjects-based ink", and their purpose is only to follow Tartar's orders.

What could back up this theory is agent 3's sanitization. It was only partial, but 3's eyes were still different from their usual colours, but when they woke up after being knucked out by agent 8, their eyes were back to normal.

That being said...

I have 3 possible theories about Acht returning to their senses and restore their memory:

Theory #1:

Following her escape from the Octarian army, Marina was trying to reach out Acht since they left as well a long time ago, but they never responded to any of her messages.

After Tartar was defeated, Marina went to wander the Deep Sea Metro. She must have listened to the music echoing and recognized the voice of her lost friend despite the fact that it was affected by the sanitization.

Marina went on a searching spree across every corner of the metro to find a sign of them, until she finally found them in their sanitized state. Marina had no choice but to bail them out of their hellhole.

She was determined to help Acht regain their sense of self and catch up on them.

Marina never told Acht about the Memverse though.

Theory #2:

After Tartar was defeated, Acht was still working as a DJ at the Deep Sea Metro for a while. Then maybe because they were not under Tartar's control any longer, the sanitization of their mind slowly died out, their eyes fading back to their usual hues, and they were able to flee containment, seeking to restore their memories.

After Acht fully regained themselves, they ran away from the Metro to find Marina. Unfortunately, Order caught them and brought them to the Memverse.

Theory #3:

Acht was still under the influence of the "test-subjects-based ink" even if we beat Tartar, but Order somehow found a way to get throught their mind to be put into the Memverse.

If you have anything to add to this theory, go for it. I'm open to feedbacks and opinions.

Do you think the fuzzy octos from ROTM could be made normal again? Would they keep the fuzz but go back to normal mentally?

Im gonna throw my hands up in the air and say I don't know HAHAHA!

Fuzzy ooze is somehow more vague than sanitised ink and we barely know ANYTHING about it aside from it's creation. It sometimes turns Inklings and Octolings into fuzz balls that "lose all sense of self" or it gives them fuzzy hair.

Now, fuzzy Octarians are on the verge of becoming full mammals but aren't. So theoretically, there COULD be a cure to revert Octarians back to their regular oily selves or bring back their minds but still have fuzzy hair. We're gonna have to wait and see if Nintendo is actually ever gonna bring up fuzzy Octarians again or not.... they are all stuck down in Alterna... they gonna bring that up or....

Either they get covered in some other magical ink to cure the fuzz or they go through some memory shenanigans like the Memverse in Side Order which was made to help sanitised Octarians.
