The irony is that Sangwon/Kyunghoon are probably the main couple of the game/novel. Yeowoon was said to be the side character with a sad life that dies. But we're seeing the story from the perspective of a character that is focused on him, so to us he is the main character's love interest.

But in the original story, Yeowoon is a side character.

you were part of sangwon's group that took over the stadium filled with humans. reckless and stubborn, you had no intentions of hurting them. after all, you were just like them months ago.

you stuck around sangwon and his minions for company, and it was horrible.

oh, how the heavens blessed you when you met him, a soldier named bang jinho, probably the most nonchalant person you'd ever met. You wondered if it was because you kept putting your nose in his business, which annoyed him.

but you loved his reactions.

"what the hell are you doing?" he asked, already irritated as you lit up his bulb with what you called a curse. "providing you electricity. It's bad to work in the dark," you winked, smiling.

"i'm about to sleep," he said, turning his back on you.

"oops?"

"it's too hot!" he shouted, his back turning red. "you need to be warm; it's cold season already!" you swatted him.

"are you crazy? it's literally—" you cut him off, pouring hot water on him again while laughing.

"Why are you suddenly sweeping there?" dongjun asked cluelessly. "my baby jinho must work in clean spaces!" you replied, mopping the floor with passion, wearing a mask and surgical gloves.

"you sure that's not your ocd acting up?"

"dongjun said you used to have long hair. why did you cut it?" you asked, chin on his shoulder, peeking at him from behind.

"none of your business," he said, pushing you away while you sulked.

"what the fuck? why is your hand dry? whis is not what I imagined holding your hands would feel like," you complained, grabbing lotion from your pocket and applying it to his hands.

"why do you have—" you cut him off again.

"don't even ask why I have lotion in my pocket. i'm always prepared, babe."

"you know, jinho will run out of patience with you. why do you keep bothering him?" dongjun asked while he puffed cancer sticks with you.

"just wanna be his."

hi beloved!! i'm not sure if you have already explained this in your Love for Love's Sake linguistic explanation posts, please refer me there if you have!! but i did not understand anything about Sangwon's crying scene. who died. was it his grandpa or a poodle. i really really did not get it 😭

Short answer: it was the poodle! (not died yet but had cancer pls someone check up on sangwon and his dog)

Long answer, because I'm always excited to talk more about Love for Love's Sake:

When Myungha catches Sangwon crying on a playground, he asks what's wrong. Sangwon answers: "Seulgi is sick" ("슬기가 앞아요").

And the thing is, Sangwon uses the word 앞아요 (apayo) which is a standard polite way of saying someone hurts or is unwell, BUT you wouldn't use it to talk about your senior or your grandparents. Usually you'd use this word about yourself or your friends or someone younger than you.

This is exactly why Myungha's first thought is that Sangwon is talking about his little brother/sister! He asks: "Is is your younger sibling? Are they too sick?"

And now Sangwon responds with "A grandpa" ("할아버지요"/haraboji-yo). Translation confusion coming in - Sangwon says 'My Seulgi is A grandpa', not MY grandpa. This is when Myungha's doubts and confusion click, because you wouldn't talk so casually about your well-respected old grandfather.

I pulled up an example from Korean studybook, this is how you'd address the same topic in a very polite and formal manner.

할아버지께서 편찮으세요. – My grandfather is sick.

First of all, you'd add a honorific form 께서 to the word "grandfather/haraboji", otherwise you'd look rude, and also there are several verbs that have more honorific forms that are typically used when you talk about seniors like your grandparents (like to be, sleep, eat, die etc).

Think like you can say someone 'kicked the bucket/died/passed away', each means the same thing but has different nuance and level of respect for the person. Sangwon used the second type but he is expected to use the highest level.

If Sangwon was talking about his actual grandfather, he'd probably use 아프세요/apeuseyo (more formal version of 앞아요/apayo that he can use for the adults) or 편찮으세요/pyeongchaneuseyo (honorific verb for seniors)

So Myungha apologizes - just in case Sangwon is a rude brat and actually always talks so casually with his cool grandpa - and assumes Seulgi is not his actual grandpa. His intuition was right, Sangwon is not that rude :D

I can imagine the dog too, this is a white poodle that is a very common breed in Korea – and he might either be actually old (is 12 years too old for a dog?) or Sangwon is affectionately used to joking about it (they do look like small grandpas, no? is it just me?). So it makes sense that you give a haraboji nickname to a dog + talk casually about him (Sangwon paying all respects to his dog would actually sound more confusing tbh xD)

I can add that 슬기/Seulgi means "wisdom" and it's a unisex name but mostly it's used by women, so Sangwon potentially could confuse Myungha even further :D

But also this scene breaks my heart, Myungha is so caring and comforting but then he breaks Sangwon's heart so easily, and Sangwon is left there with a beaten up face and more things to cry about, someone stop me –

No but the sunbae characters acting in that final sunken place scene (in which he's wearing white). We've seen myungha, many call him the ideal protagonist. One who possesses all the characters you could want in a lead. Now imagine knowing tae myungha irl, being a friend or simply an acquaintance. Seeing how quickly yeowoon and sangwon got attached, it would probably take less than a week of knowing him, to get attached. Then, out of nowhere (from the outside at least, doesn't look like he had anyone to confide in) he passes. You get to know he walked into the sea. Gently and quietly. What kind of insurmountable inexplicable daunting grief would that invoke? Even if there wasn’t much of a ‘relationship’ in the sense of the word, how shaken up would you be? It would be hard to gauge for an outsider. The tremors will course through you, like the silent waves myungha was surrounded by, in his last moments. So, you decide to give him a happy ending. Through writing. Through art. It was that look. Senior's last look and final wish for myungha. To find happiness.

"weird." he jerks his chin towards it, frowning. maybe blade's onto something. "mechanics usually get touchy about their tools, don't you think?" @ HAERAN ---

he shakes his head a little at the mention of money, waving a hand. "i don't really care about the money. it's just a hobby, but that means i want it done right if i'm going to put my time into it." it's the truth, really, nothing he does is for the money, never has been. he's not in the need of it, and in lieu of the desire leaves the real crux of the issue, where his interests in who wins and loses lies within the reality of the race.

he blows smoke out of his mouth and tips the ashes at the end of it towards the ground, watches the embers glow orange until cold, gray ash is what falls, nods. "absolutely fucking nothing up there. it makes it too easy for assholes like this to rally up a fuck ton of them to do their bidding, like this one has." he watches idly as sin starts rolling the bike, and if he hadn't seen the way it raced he maybe wouldn't of known better, but he can tell that it doesn't have much left for it to go.

so he follows, a trail of smoke, lingering a bit to the side of him as he guides him back to where he had his bike. his gaze is discreetly cast to the side--- to the wasp and all of his followers, and they don't warrant any suspicions on his half that they're even paying attention to them. and they're there soon enough, sangwon had looked over here countless times, but not really lingered close enough to get a good look. he usually had other things to do then pay attention to the bikes.

"it might be a good idea, if they're going to start pulling shit like this. i would say it should be an official rule, but i don't really trust anyone to rally together a loyal group of people that couldn't be coerced either way depending on who they're rooting for, paid for it or not." he muses, and walks through the sand, noting the smudged out footprints of who'd been in and out of here, trying to make out the types of shoes, still idly smoking throughout the encounter.

he looks over to the toolbox sin points out and makes his way over, eyebrow raised. "if it's a good mechanic, yeah. if they left this here, then they're just fucking stupid." sangwon says, crouching down by the toolbox and holding the smoke between two fingers of his off hand as he opens the toolbox with the other, gloved grip revealing an incriminating sight.

sangwon laughs, despite himself. "they're just stupid. they left the nails in here." he says, and holds one of them up for sin to see. "does this look like what you got in your tire?" he shakes his head a little, there's odds and ends in there, a hammer and tape and pliers, and he lets the lid thud shut after he's done.

"maybe they thought they could get off with just saying the box is always here, you just rolled over a nail, got it stuck in there yourself. where was it positioned, again? could they claim that?" he remembers something about the back tire, but he didn't look at it well enough back when he first mentioned it, wants to look at it up close now that he's got something to compare it to.

sometimes he couldn't imagine how people have the thought process for these kinds of things and convince themselves it's foolproof, but then again, he'd seen so many cases, he isn't surprised at the supposed logic. there is an idle suspicion in the back of his head, though, at the sight of the toolbox so close. sin wouldn't sabotage his own bike to undermine another racer, would he? sabotage others just to frame him? why would he, when he still keeps winning?

he doesn't betray the thought by the expression on his mask, a wash of chamomile cream, considering moss green as he straightens back up to look closer. blames it on his own trained mind, to always consider every avenue before he reaches a conclusion, as far away as they may seem to be.

transfer student!sangwon glances at the dark green board where chalk marks lay, quizzically trying to make something out of the frankly terrible handwriting your literature teacher had left behind. when deciphering the squiggles and lines seemed to become impossible after a certain while, he slumps on his chair.

you take a notice, wondering if you should give him a helping hand since it was quite obvious how he was still new to his surroundings, not even having made a friend as of yet that he could hang around with. sympathising with him, you wordlessly take your notebook in your hand and scoot with your chair over to his side— it was convenient how you were seated right in front of him.

sangwon blinks owlishly, never expecting you to start a conversation with him all of a sudden. you give him a friendly smile, pointing at the incomplete notes on his open page, "hey, you can copy off of mine. no one really gets the way mr. han writes for a while until they get used to it, don't worry!"

"ah," he mumbles, "thanks."

you chuckle at his mild reaction, "it's okay, my pleasure! welcome to our class, by the way! i hope you'll like it here." and with the soft smile you give him, one that flips his stomach over, sangwon is truly convinced that maybe, this new school won't be that bad of a thing at all.

Sangwon stood in front of the creepy looking building, his original plan was to go alone although upon arrival, he realized he actually couldn't do this alone. Sighing he walked back where he had signal, calling for you knowing you'd be up at strange hours of the night.

"Wake up" he sighed into the phone, you scoffed into the phone "I am awake idiot" you sighed into the phone, Sangwon smiled "ok come on" he said without giving you context on where your going, raising your eyebrow you spoke, "where am I going?" You asked sitting up in you're bed, Sangwon sighed "I'll text you" he said before hanging up sending the address through text.

Sighing you got out of bed throwing on one of his shirts and some sweats you headed out the door, following the address Sangwon gave you. Opun arriving you seen Sangwon sitting on the porch of a scary looking house casually playing some game on his phone, you sighed in relief "oh thank god, I thought I was lost" you said walking up to him, he smiled "no I know I thought the same thing when I got to the dead zone". Getting up he grabbed your hand leading you into the house, "it's supposedly haunted" he explained making you stop dead in you're tracks.

"are you kidding?" You asked fear growing over you, Sangwon smiled showing his teeth, "I'll protect you" he laughed, you on the offhand weren't amused, staring at him like he just broke youre favorite mug. "Come on! Let loose a little it'll be fun promise" he smiled wider wiggling his finger, "your lucky I tolerate you" you scoffed grabbing his arm for dear life.

Time passes you weren't sure how long you've been here, Sangwon sighed not getting activity as he was starting to get bored, taunting the spirits, "Won stop!" You warned him, he laughed shaking his head as he continued taunting. "Come out pussy!" He yelled out again making you smack his back, "what is wrong with you" you huffed covering his mouth, muffling his mouth he stuck his tongue out licking you're palm "ew!" You exclaimed ripping you're hand away.

Eventually he grew bored tossing down his phone "I'm bored" he groaned standing up dusting his butt from the ash "let go" he grumbled making you sigh in relief "youre so stupid" you muttered followimg him, Sangwon and you stood outside under an awning away from the rain as he sighed "this whole thing was a bust" he said disappointed as he messed his already messy hair, you sighed shaking you're head "yeah because you're being an asshole maybe if-" you tried only for him to cut you off "yeah yeah yeah you've said it a million times if i was nicer whatever" he shook his head, in response you rolled you're eyes.

"Won I'm not kidding" you said flicking his forehead, he laughed grabbing you're hand "kinda hungry" he muttered after a few minutes of silence "McDonald's?" You asked, he gave you a weird look "isn't there like a block or something?" He said making you sigh, oh how this already long night just got even longer.

shaking your head, you decide to just stare at your shoes. he sighs and slowly starts helping you up.

"well, in that case, i guess it's safe for you to come with me." you timidly meet his eyes. it made you feel uneasy not being to read the emotions in his eyes. "you don't mind? i mean, i only bring trouble."

to your surprise, sangyeon chuckles. "well, at least i know you'll be safe, love."
