The Black Jacobins in stock now at Nicholas Brooklyn A classic and impassioned account of the first revolution in the Third World. This powerful, intensely dramatic book is the definitive account of the Haitian Revolution of 1794-1803, a revolution that began in the wake of the Bastille but became the model for the Third World liberation movements from Africa to Cuba. It is the story of the French colony of San Domingo, a place where the brutality of master toward slave was commonplace and ingeniously refined. And it is the story of a barely literate slave named Toussaint L'Ouverture, who led the black people of San Domingo in a successful struggle against successive invasions by overwhelming French, Spanish, and English forces and in the process helped form the first independent nation in the Caribbean. Felipe & Letizia’s decade: Trips Abroad
F&L Decade 08/??
Felipe and Letizia made a three-day Official Trip to Peru between November 22 and 25, 2010. They traveled accompanied by the Secretary of State for International Cooperation, Soraya Rodríguez, the General Director for Latin America, Juan Carlos Sánchez, the General Director of Commerce and Investments, José Carlos García de Quevedo, and the General Director of International Economic Relations and Energy Affairs, José Eugenio Salarich.
They arrived at the El Callao air base in Lima in the evening of November 22, where they were received by the Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Antonio García Belaúnde, the ambassador of Peru in Spain, Jaime Cáceres, and the Spanish ambassador in Peru, Javier Sandomingo, among other personalities.
Their activities began the following day, November 23, with an offering before the Monument to the Forerunners and Foremen of Independence, during which Don Felipe reviewed the troops, the National Anthems of both countries were interpreted and Felipe & Letizia deposited a Crown of flowers.
Once the tribute was finished, the Princes went to the Government Palace of Peru, where they were received by President Alan García. Afterwards, Felipe held a working meeting with the President in the Ambassadors Hall. Meanwhile, Doña Letizia was accompanied by the daughter of the Peruvian President.
Subsequently, Felipe and Letizia headed to the Peruvian Congress, where they were received by the president, César Zumaeta. After being greeted by the members of the Congress, the president of the Peru-Spain Parliamentary League, Martín Pérez Monteverde, and the president of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Congress, Hildebrando Tapia, among other personalities, the Princes met with the president of the Congress in the Office of the Presidency. At the end of this meeting, they held a working meeting with the Foreign Relations Committee of the Congress.
In the afternoon, they attended an academic event at the Casona de San Marcos, current cultural center of the National University of San Marcos, where the "Dictionary of Americanisms" was presented, prepared by the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language. The University of San Marcos was founded in 1551, making it the oldest in America. In 1867, the University moved to the Casona de San Marcos, former convent of the Society of Jesus in Lima.
The Princes were received by the Dean, Luis Izquierdo, and the Peruvian Minister of Culture, Juan Ossío, among other personalities. After signing in the Golden Book, they accessed the Hall of Degrees and took their places at the presidential table.
During the ceremony, the Dean of the University, the general secretary of the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language and director of the Dictionary of Americanisms, Humberto López Morales were given the Master Lesson entitled "The new Dictionary of Americanisms and the future of our language ", the president of the Peruvian Academy of Language, Marco Martos, the Peruvian Minister of Culture and, finally, the Prince of Asturias.
Don Felipe stressed that language is "a heritage that we receive from our ancestors through our parents and that we must deliver, enriched, to our children." he highlighted the importance of the Dictionary of Americanisms, whose realization has taken ten years, which together with the Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of doubts or commemorative editions, "sustains and expresses the unity of our language, the basis of the unity of action of the Hispanic peoples."
The activities of the first day concluded with an official dinner offered by the President of the Republic in honor of His Royal Highnesses in the Government Palace, which was attended by about 120 guests.
In his speech, the Prince celebrated the "Peruvian miracle" and the important advance experienced by this country. Don Felipe highlighted the reforms undertaken by the Peruvian Government, which have favored "a climate of economic stability and legal certainty."
On Wednesday, November 24, they began their activities with a working breakfast, held in a hotel in the capital, with representatives of major Spanish companies in Peru, such as Abengoa, Técnicas Reunidas, Endesa, Grupo Fierro, BBVA, Telefónica, Grupo Santander, Indra, Mapfre, Repsol, Torrescámara, ACS and OHL.
Once finished, Felipe and Letizia met with the Spanish Community in Peru. During the meeting, Felipe highlighted their "constant effort to the Peruvian progress and to the improvement of the living conditions of those who are here your fellow citizens, with generosity and corresponding to the welcome that this land gave you upon your arrival. You represent the essence of Spain in this country and you also project its modern image as a nation of solidarity and openness. You are at the same time actors and witnesses of the dynamism of Peru and its profound daily transformation. You are also of the intensity and breadth that our relations have acquired".
At noon, Felipe and Letizia shared a lunch with Peruvian personalities at the Residence of the Ambassador of Spain. In the afternoon, they presided over the closing of the Spain-Peru Business Meeting, held at the headquarters of BBVA Banco Continental, which was attended by about two hundred businessmen and representatives of Spanish and Peruvian companies.
In his speech, Felipe congratulated the Government and Peruvian society for the "formidable economic advance" of Peru in recent years and highlighted the excellent economic and commercial relations between Spain and Peru, of which our country is the main foreign investor.
The second day of the official visit ended with a reception in honor of Felipe and Letizia, offered by the Peruvian Foreign Minister, in the Palace of Torre Tagle, headquarters of the Ministry.
On the third and last day of the trip, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia moved to Arequipa. After being received upon arrival at Rodríguez Ballón Airport by the second vice president of the of Peru, Lourdes Mendoza del Solar, the president of the Regional Government of Arequipa, Juan Manuel Guillén, and the mayor of Arequipa, among other authorities, they headed towards the Tambo de la Cabezona, a restored housing corridor within the Development Heritage Program of the Spanish Agency for Development Cooperation.
This initiative, aimed both at the restoration of historical monuments and social support, has won first place in the XIV Biennial of Peruvian Architecture in the category of heritage value.
Next, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia moved to the Monastery of Santa Catalina, the greatest exponent of Arequipa's colonial architecture. In this Dominican monastery, founded in 1579, resided Spanish nuns with dowry. There, they had the opportunity to greet the Spaniards residing in Arequipa.
The last of the activities of the Princes during his visit to Peru was a lunch offered in his honor by the president of the Regional Government, held at the Casa del Moral, which was attended by about a hundred representatives of various Arequipa sectors.
In his speech, Don Felipe described the visit to Peru as "especially pleasant and fruitful", which has served to promote bilateral relations in all orders. The Prince also celebrated the strength of the Peruvian economy, thanked the cordiality with which they were received and praised the history, culture, cuisine and landscapes and monuments of Peru.
