THE JETSET LIFE IS GONNA KILL YOU, ERIC CARTER!
my laptop charger uhhhhhh. met its end in a very permanent, very fire hazardy kind of way last week. while waiting for a replacement I decided to try and get some work done at the library and was asking around for some urban fantasy (extra points for a mystery plot of some kind) recommendations to check out while I was there
the eric carter series was mentioned a couple of times, AND had the added bonus of having a necromancer for a main character. I love necromancers. someday I'm gonna play one in a game instead of immediately defaulting to vampires.
Fire Season, Stephen Blackmoore
#i was also told to check out johannes cabal because. again. necromancers. and sandman slim#i'll get around to it next year probably#ive had urban fantasy on the mind ever since I did a full re read of the dresden files and then a SECOND re read of it right after#but from a different starting point and then did an unnecessary examination of harry as an unreliable narrator#with a very specific kind of world vision that does funny things to his perception. idk what purpose that served#ANYWAY. i got a whole list of gritty urban fantasy recommendations to slowly work through next year#i dont really play around with original english language urban fantasy fiction very often because it's like#a lot of what i want out of it I already get out of japanese/korean comics I read and also filipino horror#so I'm not exactly starved for it except that I'm low key kind of starving for it. when will filipino horror return from the war#anyway i appreciate the hate the main character has for spanish colonialism#and as a long time whump enthusiast i love it when a character goes through the absolute wringer#creative liberties were taken. i thought about rolling up the sleeve on his. left? arm and then thought about the tattoos and changed#my mind lmao. i started drawing some of them tho. i once dated a guy who was similarly tattooed and for a minute i thought#'well i can just rip off all of that' and then i thought 'wait i still have to draw it' and decided Not To#eric carter series

Not sure if you do much reading, but have you heard of Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey? (It's like a 10 to 11 book series) Honestly had a fantastic world building of Hell and S1 of Helluva reminded me of the energy this series has (and continues throughout the series).
Never heard of it, but it sounds interesting!

Halloween Day Five!
Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim series - funny, violent, absurd, sexy, and wonderfully heretical - has been my comfort reading for over a decade. Sadly, Jim has killed his last demon but hopefully his brand new as of today novella The Pale House Devil is just the start of a new adventure in supernatural bad behavior.
Just remember, the most banal evil (generational wealth, racism, etc) is always the greatest terror of all.
From the jacket copy :
"Ford and Neuland are paranormal mercenaries—one living, one undead; one of them kills the undead, the other kills the living. When a job goes bad in New York, they head west to wait for the heat to cool down. There, a young woman named Tilda Rosenbloom hires them on behalf of wealthy landowner, Shepherd Mansfield, to track and kill a demon haunting a mansion in remote northern California. As Ford and Neuland investigate the creature they uncover a legacy of blood, sacrifice and slavery in the house. Forced to confront a powerful creature unlike anything they’ve faced before, they come to learn that the most frightening monster might not be the one they’re hunting…"
If you are interested in being tagged this month or at any point I post reviews or recommendations please let me know.

supernatural s9e20 bloodlines (w. andrew dabb)
LOL oh my god at the (quick check to make sure i am actually watching spn) hair color change like in the craft!
the craft (1996) [jesus it came out when i was 16??? what is time]
gonna throw the blond in the knockoff boyd holbrook (corinthian) / spn!brady (i called brady boyd hollbrook with a dash of armie hammer i am very consistent in my thought process lol) pile with bartholewhatever because apparently all slim white blond men occupy one spot in my head
spn s5e20 brady / the sandman - boyd holbrook as the corinthian / spn s9e3 bart
we also have budget tom cruise
another hunter via fridge origin story?
DEAN Agents Bonham and Peart, FBI. We will take it from here.
100% heard bottom and pert and died inside a little bit. what i get for having the captions off to screenshot something
why are sam and dean speaking with southern accents, is this someone's recounting of meeting them (like the lilt up on "profile" from dean, the way sam said "last night" for ex. i'm just... they sometimes, like jackles especially does the again uhgin sometimes and other little bits of accent slip in but not like this)
little bit of andrew garfield maybe? lol good god brain, get it together. this actor was also in the vampire diaries as a character i may or may not have seen, already wasted too much time not gonna get a picture
i have a feeling i'm going to commit about 5% of this episode to memory.
MARGO Yeah, you'll what? David, come on. You don't want this. You ran away to be a human. You always had a soft spot for 'em. Look, you're out. Stay out.
slow blink at the stanford era sam parallel
what the fuck is happening. why are sam and dean acting so weird talking to this nice boy ennis who looks about 18. who also has a post-stanford era sam parallel
DAVID Wow. You are so in over your head. Let me give you the short version. Chicago is divided up between five monster families. ENNIS What? Is that a joke? DAVID Do you hear a laugh track?
i mean, i snorted
just insert me saying wtf is happening continuously
he's got the patented single tear of man pain too!
~and the real monsters were the humans~
they must have really been shooting in chicago because it looks like shameless! lol. have they ever shot on location before?
ENNIS But I couldn't walk away. This is my fight now. Hell, it's a damn war, and I got to start somewhere.
laughing loudly, WHAT IS GOING ON. it's like a spinoff test
ENNIS Who is this? VOICE ON PHONE If you start hunting, the monsters will kill you. ENNIS Dad? Dad?
??????
what did i just watch
from the wiki
This episode was also planned to be a backdoor pilot for Supernatural: Bloodlines, a series set in Chicago and based on the characters introduced in this episode, however it was never picked up by the CW.
losing it. that still doesn't explain why sam and dean were acting so strange and accented (briefly) 😂
when people talk about spn getting worse as the seasons go on, this type of episode is what i was worried about haha at least there was a very specific reason it was Like This
i know i'd heard there was a spinoff that didn't go anywhere but i still am somehow very surprised and confused
not-andrew garfield and ennis were good it was just a completely absurd not good episode

Books read in April 2024
-A Quantum Love Story by Mike Chen started March 29, 2024 and finished April 2, 2024 - 4/5 stars. This is a time loop story with love in it. Time loops are always so angsty and devastating. I like how the main character initiated the love story. Its very interesting how the only way to stop the loop from repeating again is to go back in time to fix mistakes. Its devastating that the main character doesn’t end up with the man she likes but she makes it so her past self can end up with him. Did not see that coming
-Light Years from Home by Mike Chen started April 2, 2024 and finished April 5, 2024 - 5/5 stars. Oh man what an amazing book. Imagine having such an estranged relationship with your family that when you and your dad are abducted with aliens you are like “Yeah, I’ll fight this alien war but I’ll send my dad back though” I don’t know what I would do if my twin was abducted by aliens and then returned years later. Such good family drama in this book. Lots of “Why didn't you come back?” and “It’s your fault that dad died!”
-The Afterlives by Thomas Peirce started April 5, 2024 and finished April 8, 2024- 4/5 stars. Man dies and comes back and sort of has a crisis about not seeing anything. Interesting characters and plot. This was going to be 3 stars but the part with the main character going through the machine was interesting. Main character was a tad annoying but I have read worse.
-The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey started April 9, 2024 and finished April 10, 2024 - 4/5 stars. What do you do when you find out your husband essentially made a clone of you and marries her? I’m so glad the clone murdered the abusive husband. It sounded like the main character and her husband were toxic to each other. I was thrown a bit when the clone and the main character decided to make a clone out of the asshole cheating husband but whatever. Asshole husbands are buried in the garden it seems. Interesting ending.
The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Older started April 11, 2024 and finished April 12, 2024- 4/5 stars. Cozy murder mystery in space with lesbians. What’s not to love? The dynamic reminded me of Sherlock Holmes and Watson a bit. This was a short book so I read it pretty quickly.
-The Imposition of Unnecessary Obstacles by Malka Older started April 12, 2024 and finished April 15, 2024- 4/5 stars. The sequel was a tad longer but it was still pretty good. I would be interested to see where this series goes.
-The Devil You Know by Mike Carey started April 15, 2024 and finished April 19, 2024- 4/5 stars. Now this is the urban fantasy that I really fucking love. It makes me think what the hell Felix was doing before this book took place. It amuses me to no end that Felix plays the tin whistle to do stuff with ghosts. Imagine going about your business and see a man playing a flute and playing popular british songs. Anyway good book. I need to read the entire series. Felix Castor is an interesting man living in an interesting world.
-The Veiled Masters by Tim Pratt started April 19, 2024 and finished April 22, 2024- 5/5 stars. Oh man what an excellent book. It’s the third book of a trilogy. There’s just something about mind controlling spores that I just fucking love. It actually works in this book. I also love the mind control is added with feelings of bliss and happiness when a task is completed. This trilogy was entertaining as hell and I love the diversity of characters. It’s also queer which is good. I think I ought to look into Tim Pratt books more.
-Vicious Circle by Mike Carey started April 22, 2024 and finished April 28, 2024 -5/5 stars. Holy crap I think I like this series as much as the Sandman Slim series by Richard Kadrey. Felix is incredibly interesting. He inserts himself into certain situations though as if he’s the only one that can fix things but whatever. I’m a little confused as to why a certain dude injected him with truth serum. Didn’t even get to read if it actually worked or not. It’s very interesting to see how Felix will get out of situations and or fights. He can get hurt and has to recover like any normal person. It makes a lot of sense that at the end of the book his landlady/friend is like “Yeah you aren’t living here anymore”
-dhalgren by samuel r. delany started April 28, 2024- I am half way through this book at the current moment. I am unsure if I’m going to finish it. The main character doesn’t seem particularly picky with things including where he’s sleeping and who he is sleeping with. I hope protection still exists. Like the main character will sleep with women and men and there isn't any mention of protection. Like fucking hell I just got to the part where he does stuff with the 15 year old boy. I'm pretty sure it's considered rape. This book was written in the 70s and I have to remind myself with that. This book doesn’t always make sense but I guess that’s fine. Perhaps I’m reading it for a change in scenery. Sometimes you got to read things that make you uncomfortable.

!!! would love to hear about ur roach headcanons and backstory, I miss him
Hi anon! I miss our bug boy too - but it's what inspired me to make the 'Bloodlines' series!
So, my Roach headcanons, it's a bit long but hey ho:
He's British - born and raised in rural green of East of England.
Accent? He has what is known as a Modern RP British accent (Youtube example) with a hint of "farmer" sometimes thrown in because you can't escape it if you live in the East lmao.
He hold dual nationality (British and US) but uses the British flag.
He is a Royal Marine, specifically apart of the Special Forces Support Group. He joined when he was 17.
He is a K9 handler, chosen to be a part of a new trial of Royal Marine based K9s. This is how he met his dog, Nacho! The trial was scrapped leaving them as the only pair that made it through.
He's a skilled and focused fighter on duty, but off duty he's a friendly, empathic guy who likes to make jokes.
He knows British Sign Language - after his mother's death, he was diagnosed with Selective Mutism. Therapy and counselling helped deal with his grief and he started to speak again but sometimes he uses BSL because he's a little sh*t ;)
His appearance:
He has sandy blonde hair, cut fairly short but has a good ol' fluffy fringe parted on the right.
His eyes are a bluey-green.
Caucasian skin with freckles on his arms.
He's 180cm tall, he's well-built with defined muscle but naturally slim and small.
He has a scar on his right cheek and neck, along with many unseen scars on his chest.
His family:
His father is American, his mother was British.
His father is a high ranked officer in the US Army, he started out in the US Miliatry Police and worked his way up.
His father was stationed as security in the UK at a USAF base, its how he met Roach's mother.
His mother passed away from cancer when he was 9, this strained his relationship with his father.
Roach's uncle is Sandman! Sandman is the younger brother of Roach's father.
Roach considers Sandman his "dad", he stepped up when his biological father didn't and has always been there for Roach.
A big part of Roach's background was being apart of a secretive joint unit between Special Forces Royal Marines and US Marines. The unit only did a handful of missions before it was attacked during a mission to retrieve stolen intel from an enemy compound. The unit were travelling in a convoy when they were swarmed by insurgents - by the time help arrived, only 4 unit members were still alive and Roach was one of them (along with Nacho). This is where he received his scars.
He was sent back to the UK 2 days later to recover in hospital - on arrival he was met by Sandman, who had flown in as soon as he heard about the attack. Roach was offered a place in the SAS but he turned it down as they did not want Nacho to come with him. Instead, Roach and Nacho travel back to America with Sandman, where Roach recovers and spends his days keeping up training.
I've tried to simplify everything down - feel free to ask more questions for more in-depth stuff, Sandman headcanons etc :)

🎶 — favorite song at the moment? 📕 — favorite book/series?
Mun Questions!! - from @aurorodicit (it won't let me tag youuuu ugh)
🎶 — favorite song at the moment?
the one that has been on repeat the most in the last week is one that I've been intending to actually post here!! It reminds me so much of Hyperion/Opportunity it's hilarious.
It's called 'The Fine Print' by The Stupendium. Some may know it from tiktok-
Oh, honestly? Did you not read the colony policy? That defines you as company property? That waivers your say in autonomy?
The conglomerate's got you in lock and key We put the dollar back into idolatry If you're upset, you can rent an apology We are a family forged in bureaucracy No "I" in "team, " but there's "con" in "economy"
Were you expecting adventure? Were you hoping for fun? My friend, you're indentured And pleasure's exempt from your tenure So venture back down to your slum That's provided at generous prices Your worth is determined by your sacrifices
A small term of service when down on the surface Internment's a freebie that comes with the purchase
📕 — favorite book/series?
So far hands down the answer to this is going to be the Sandman Slim series by Richard Kadrey. It's a gritty Urban Fantasy on similar wavelengths as Hellblazer.
It may not jive with everyone at first, as it's written in... second person? First and a half? The protagonist uses 'I', 'me', and 'mine'. But it's not insufferable and is actually really well written.
"Another scar or two won't ruin my pretty face." "Right." "Carlos, are you being polite? That's not why I came here for. I know I'm not Steve McQueen." "My lady is totally in love with him. Lucky for me he's dead or I'd be in trouble." I hold up my glass of Jack Daniel's in a toast. "Here's to all the guys better looking than us. May they all die first.”
Also with such gems as:
The downside to jackrabbit reflexes is that while they get you out of the way of obvious and imminent danger, when you're going forty miles an hour on your front wheel, those reflexes will simply launch you into the air like a squirrel on a land mine.
#[ aaaa thank you darlin!#any chance i get to ramble about this series i shall take it! ]#auroradicit#ooc. | about the mun#asked and answered.#[ tumblr has fucked up the smalltext and i'm about to strangle someone#cus everytime i try to fix it something else cocks off. oh well. ]

Thank you so much for the tag, @there-must-be-a-lock <3 I love your fics!
1.) How many works do you have on AO3? 170! And I've orphaned a few.
2.) What is your AO3 wordcount? 419,917.
3.) What fandoms do you write for? Mostly DC and associated fandoms these days! I've had Supernatural, MCU, TMA, and Daredevil phases, too.
4.) What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Five fics in the Emergency Line series.
5.) Do you respond to comments? I try to!
6.) What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I'm sure there's some with more acutely angsty endings (like Nerves) but for me, it's the ending of flatline. Most of that series is angst, to be fair.
7.) What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? This one is from awhile ago, but it's sort of a fix-it: North Star. Or possibly One Thing Right.
8.) Do you get hate on fics? Not really. Comment moderation is great.
9.) Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Occasionally-- it's not really my thing, but it can be a fun challenge. I usually write dom/sub dynamics when I do write it. I'm too asexual to see the appeal, otherwise.
10.) Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest crossover you've ever written?
Not many. The oddest one I've written is probably the X-men/Sandman Slim crossover that I wrote in high school. It will never see the light of day.
11.) Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of. I have had a case of not being listed as the inspiration for a work, but it wasn't malicious.
12.) Have you ever had a fic translated? Once! A lovely human translated Hardwired into Russian.
13.) Have you ever co-written a fic before? I've worked with people on fics before, but never properly cowritten, I don't think.
14.) What's your all-time favorite ship? Ooh, tough question. Superbat is always a favorite. We'll go with that.
15.) What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I have a WIP somewhere where Jon Sims and Agnes Montague run away from Hilltop Road together, but it's more vibes than actual content.
16.) What are your writing strengths? Layered characterization and complicated relationships. Conveying things between the lines.
17.) What are your writing weaknesses? I tend to get into purple prose territory.
18.) Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fics? To me, it really depends on if you're fluent in another language/have someone who's willing to help you translate. Otherwise it can be a bit clunky.
19.) First fandom you wrote for? Oh boy. Star Trek, I think? Or possibly Lord of the Rings.
20.) Favorite fic you've written? Tie between Cracked Headstones, because Slade's POV is endlessly fun to write, and flatline, because I pulled it off the way I wanted it to.
No pressure tags (if y'all haven't already done this one): @stoplookingupforheaven, @skydaemon, @skalidra, @fantastic-mr-corvid
#tag games#jay talks#writing#this was fun! I'd forgotten so many of the (relatively) older fics I posted

There's two book series that i read within the past 2 years that have really stuck with me and one author who i absolutely adore
Will Wight - Cradle Series(a youngish boy sets out on a journey to Be The Best and boy howdy, he becomes the best) - the world building is fantastic, the story telling as you on the edge of your seat, and the turns & twists keep you turning & twisting - 12 book series, complete
Richard Kadrey - Sandman Slim(an 18 year old ends up in hell for 10ish years and escapes hell to take revenge on those still living) - honestly one of the most interesting series I've read that depicts Hell & heaven and you go on this epic journey through LA -12ish(im not home to count & i know there's some ebooks i haven't read, but some great morally gray characters & has the best barkeeper character)
Lois McMaster Bujold - Her Vorkosigan Saga, that started in the 80s, and Penric & Desdemona
I've read so much over the past 3 years but these 3 authors have been steller and they keep making me want to go back for more

Urban Fantasy thoughts part 2
It's very interesting how in each urban fantasy book I have read the main character is constantly hurting for money. Then again, there have been quite a few science fiction books in which the starship captain isn't exactly raking in the dough.
Urban Fantasy main characters are deeply broken people which makes sense as they have seen a lot. Something interesting about reading about a deeply broken person who is just constantly trying to survive and defeat bad creatures.
I remember looking up Sandman Slim on youtube and seeing someone comparing the book series with Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series. So I checked out Storm Front by Jim Butcher and I just couldn't make it through it which was disappointing as the entire series was at the library it seemed. Didn't like how women were written, or at least the vampire women were, and I didn't like the main character.
Here are other urban fantasy books I did like:
-Dead Things by Stephen Blackmoore - I want to get more into this series.
-The Dead Take the A Train by Cassandra Khaw and Richard Kadrey - how I could not like this? Richard Kadrey cowrote it.
-Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone - I love the Craft Sequence series.
-White Trash Warlock by David R. Slayton - Pretty good book.
-Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire - I would read more of this book series. I haven't read many books about the fae.
-The Devil You Know by Mike Carey- Currently reading this book. I definitely would want to read more of this series.
Other urban fantasy books I have read /tried to read but will not continue.
-Storm Front by Jim Butcher- already gave my reasons. It's quite disappointing and I'm not slogging through several books before it gets better.
-Moon Called by Patricia Briggs- I didn't finish this book. Too much werewolf pack rules shit.
-Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews - It was a pretty good book. A lot of werewolf in this book. The constant talk of who is the alpha and pack rules just kind of annoys me.
-Spider’s Bite by Jennifer Estep - Once again, it was pretty good. She was a deadly assassin which was cool. Didn't like that she lusted after the cop. Sometimes I forget that urban fantasy protagonists can just be ridiculously horny.
That all being said, I possibly need more recommendations for urban fantasy. Hopefully they are the libraries I frequent.
