In 1992, a teenager from Singapore named Sandi Tan, along with her friends Sophia Siddique Harvey and Jasmine Ng, set out to make Singapore’s first indie road film. The film was supposed to follow a girl named “S” as she ventures to find five people, she likes enough to take to the afterlife with her. It would be titled Shirkers and it would have been glorious. With the help of their enigmatic mentor, George Cardona, the girls shot their film. But once filming had wrapped, George dropped off the face of the earth, taking any shred of Shirkers with him. Just like that, the dreams of three young girls had evaporated into thin air just like George, and the story of Shirkers would come to an end. Until twenty years later, when Sandi Tan received a package at her doorstep containing the film canisters from all those years ago, in pristine condition.

Shirkers is more than a documentary, it’s a visual journey into the bizarre experience Sandi Tan and her friends shared. Why did George Cardona run off with the footage? Why did he consistently lie about the progress of the film? Why is his past so veiled in mystery? The film does not answer these questions; nothing ever will because the answers don’t matter. While having a concrete answer of what would compel a grown man to play make-believe in such an unwavering fashion would be satisfying, it’s not the point. The point is that this Tommy Wiseau wannabe robbed these girls of what could have been a major achievement for not only them but Singapore’s film industry too. And it wasn’t until his death, 20 years later, that Sandi and her friends could receive some shred of closure.

I bought this book during a short vacation in Singapore and it seemed the most serendipitous thing to find this at a book store near where I was staying, after having really liked the author's doccie, Shirkers. The book has the same eerie vibe as the doccie as well, naïve, oddly hopeful teenage girls and double the creepy older white men. There were stretches of this book that felt quite flat but there were also parts that peaked enough to make the story interesting.

An interesting novel with a strange setting and characters, and rather good writing. A little sad, a little humorous and a little unsettling overall.

Tang: “So, Mr. Sun Wukong this alleged affair with Ms. (Random Girl IDK) has been going on for…?”

Wukong: “Two years.”

Tang: “And your first name again is..?”

Wukong: “Wukong.”

Tang: “And your boyfriends name is..?”

Wukong: “Macaque.”

Literally Everyone: *GASP*

Wukong: “I-I sorry! I misunderstand! You say boyfriend, I thought you say best friend! Macaque is my… best friend…”

Macaque: “You bastard!” (😧‼️) “You lying bastard!” (😧‼️) “That’s it! I no cover for you no more! People’s I have a biiiiig announcement! This man is gay AND European!!”

Everyone: “WOAH!!”

Guys I finished my first custom gunpla.

I've decided to call it the Strike Gundam (Titan's version). It even gets a budget sword and launcher striker packs.

As for why it has a 09 on it, the 09 decal fit pretty well and advance of zeta has like 30 gundam variations for the titans test team so just imagine this is one of them.

As for why I made it titans colors, its because after watching requiem for vengeance it made me realize the titans were right that zeon remnants are too numerous to be ignored so I did this to support the titan's cause.

Anyway painting gunpla goes hard, I highly recommend it (if your wallet can forgive you).

It's built off the EG strike gundam, most people recommended the EG or simpler HGs for your first custom. The big sword and big cannon came from the Gundam Base System Weapon Kits 03 and 04, which I got at the Gudnam Base in Tokyo. The decals were from a mix of the zeon, federation, and various gwitch decals I got from the gundam base too, but the titans test team decals were from the g-rework custom advance of zeta decals (which I think is based off a decal sheet that is sometimes sold on pbandai).

It was my first time using the airbrush so if you look closely there are some imperfections but I'm really happy with the result and now I'm thinking of what custom I want to do next.
