Madness takes control!
"Madness takes control!" a review of 'Alice in Wonderland' at the Pieter Toerien Theatre, Montecasino, until 4 February 2024.
“AND why is a raven like a writing desk?” ponders the Mad Hatter (Sandi Dangalala) with cheeky aplomb in Neka da Costa’s Alice in Wonderland at Montecasino, Fourways until 4 February 2024. Photograph courtesy VR Theatrical. IT ALL BEGINS with a bit of masked and gloved mystique that gets even the littlest of littlies focused on the stage. That is the kind of magical lure you will experience in…

NCT presents Sparky - the story of a pet
Sparky!
National Children’s Theatre (NCT) presents the musical Sparky for children aged 3 to 7, running until December 23.
This musical adaptation by Jessica Buha is based on the novel by Jenny Offill, and the music and lyrics have been created by Laura McKenzie.
This outstanding book begins with the statement, “I want a pet.” The girl’s mother’s response? “You can have any pet you want as long as it doesn’t need to be walked or bathed or fed.” Wow! That is a serious request! Where does one find such a pet?
Libby’s friend gives her good advice: “Ask the school librarian.” And indeed, it is good advice. The librarian helps Libby to find information about animals. After little research Libby is overjoyed to discover a pet that meets all the criteria ¬ one that doesn’t need to be walked or bathed or fed!
Sparky! – (Sandi Dlangalala)
Libby completes a mail order form and when her sloth arrives, she calls him Sparky. It’s love at first sight… even if Sparky doesn’t know how to fetch and always loses at hide-and-seek.
Libby’s friend is not impressed with Sparky’s lack of activity, so Libby decides to teach him some tricks, so she can show him off. Sparky isn’t as easy to train as she had hoped, but the quiet moment of contentment at the end of the story shows that the bond between owner and pet is more valuable than any impressive tricks. Even more important and the moral of the story – and a good lesson for all of us – is to accept a friend or a pet for what they are.
The creative team includes Artistic Director: Francois Theron, Musical Director by Dale Scheepers, Choreographer by Jodie Davimes and Set Design by Stan Knight.
Sparky! – Mom (Genevieve Olivier) and Mr Edwin (Gareth Meijsen).
Talent cast include: Genevieve Olivier, Sandi Dlangalala, Gareth Meijsen and NCT children from the workshops.
This is another great story for the 3-7 year olds (following The Tiger Who Came to Tea)! Give your child the opportunity to see theatre at its best presented by award-winning National Children’s Theatre.
After every performance children will have the opportunity to shake paws with Sparky!
When: Until 23 December 2017 Where: Wynnstay Theatre in the National Children’s Theatre grounds, 3 Junction Avenue, Parktown Time: 10:00 and 14:00 Ticket prices: R90 for chairs and R80 for cushions
For enquiries and bookings: Phone the theatre on 011 484 1584 or [email protected]

NCT scoops another prestigious Naledi Award
NCT scoop another prestigious Naledi Award. Pictured: Francois Theron & Moira Katz.
Moira Katz is thrilled to announce that NCT was awarded the 2016 Naledi Award for Khokho’s Treasure, Best Production for Children supported by Assitej.
“It was a very special honour for us to win the Naledi Award,” said Francois Theron, artistic director of National Children’s Theatre (NCT). In his speech, he mentioned how the play evolved. It started four years ago with the donation of a magnificent Baobab tree by our resident set designer: Stan Knight. When our CEO Moira Katz saw the tree, she asked Francois to develop a South African musical around the tree – and it took 4 iterations until it reached its current grande finale. For this final showing, we are grateful to the creative team: Musical Direction: Dale Scheepers, Choreographer: Nicol Sheraton restaged by Phillida le Roux, Set Design: Stan Knight and especially Jane Gosnell for her magic lighting.
“Congratulations to Francois for his hard work and commitment, putting together an outstanding and talented cast: Suzaan Helberg, Keaton Broderick Ditchfield, Nomonde Matiwane, Sandi Dlangalala, Thokozani Nzima and Nichole Makoba. Thanks to all NCT incredible staff, who all helped in making this production a success”, said Moira Katz CEO.
The show opened for audiences at The South African State Theatre and toured nationally to primary schools in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, Eastern Cape and Gauteng. Recently this show was invited as a main stage participant at the Baxter Theatre, as part of the ASSITEJ Cradle of Creativity International Theatre Festival for Children and Young People in Cape Town.
NCT has been bringing quality theatrical productions to children and families in schools, regional theatres, community centers and rural areas for over 25 years. Every year NCT strives to bring live professional theatre to rural children as part of the Department of Education advocating the value of theatre in education, building theatre audiences of the future, and opening minds to possible careers in the theatre.
This production was made possible by the generous support of the Department of Arts and Culture and the National Lotteries Commission.
