A few bull shark photos from my snorkel trip a few days ago!! Bulls at sunset, it was really cool but photographically difficult as I was trying to show the sharks and the sunset. The one open mouth shot got that but was a little too far away for good color, but still not too bad! Fun day out with @x__e__l__a Bull sharks are one of the most feared and notorious shark species in the world, come see the reality of how beautiful and misunderstood they are! Sharks are among the top predatory animals on this planet, first appearing 420,000,000 years ago. I could’ve said 400 million years ago but I really wanted you to look at that number and think about it. It’s an incomprehensible amount of time. That’s around 200 million years before he first dinosaurs. They have evolved into over 400 species living today, with many more existing in the past. Throughout this time sharks have evolved into varied forms, from the 60ft megalodon shark to the dwarf lantern shark at an adult size of just over 7 inches. There are many kinds of sharks in strange shapes from the goblin shark to the whale shark, but the “classic” #shark look has remained extremely successful throughout the eons. The evolutionary success story known as the shark has survived multiple mass extinction events, but many species of shark will not survive the current anthropocene extinction. That is the sixth mass extinction on our planet, currently happening right now and directly caused by humans. For those looking to learn more on that checkout The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert, but to keep relevant to sharks-many species’ populations have plummeted 80-90%. Do your part to help save them, never support shark fin soup or shark meat(yes this happens in US supermarkets), reduce seafood consumption as they’re often by catch, and help educate others! Don’t fish for sharks, even catch and release kills many through stress! All my dive gear is by @cressi1946 I’m shooting with a Canon 90D, 10-22mm wide angle lens, @aquaticadigital housing. #Shark #SharkDiving #Florida #Diving #Snorkeling #Freedive #SandbarShark https://www.instagram.com/p/CcLy_Ezv64k/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It’s the weekend, so we’re taking a break from species profiles and sharing a video of some sharks at Shedd. This tank contains sandbar sharks, a zebra shark, a sawfish, and a guitarfish! Seeing this tank in 2013 made me fall in love with zebra sharks, and definitely kickstarted my love for sharks in general! •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• #sharks #shark #sharktank #aquarium #sharkaquarium #shedd #sheddaquarium #chicago #sandbarshark #zebrashark https://www.instagram.com/p/BqVAzCoFxmP/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=rpvtnfvr8n5s

#Repost @aproctor.art (@get_repost) ・・・ Hello shark 13/365 the Sandbar Shark! Named after the sandy and muddy flats where they are most commonly found, sandbars are easily recognized for their large pectoral and dorsal fins. They eat mostly small bony fish as well as octopi and small crustaceans, and they pose little to no threat to humans. Currently listed on the IUCN Red List as a Vulnerable species, these sharks are primary targets in the Eastern USA for their meat and fins, and for game fishing. They are also hunted in the Eastern North Atlantic and South China Sea for their fins, meat, livers, and skin ❤🦈❤ . . . #yearofsharks #yearofsharksproject #shark #sandbarshark #painting #watercolour #art #artivism #artforgood #ocean #oceanconservation #ink #saveourseas #saveoursharks #respectthefin #respectsharks #nofear #nofinsoup #nofinsnofuture

Im looking forward to taking more photos of members of the class chondrichthyes. Sandbar sharks (Carcharhinus plumbeus) are native to the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific oceans. Due to overfishing, Sandbar sharks are currently listed as vulnerable under the IUCN, because of this the NMFS banned all commercial landings of this species. However the NMFS is a US federal agency which means they don't have such power to ban commercial landings in the Indo-Pacific region where shark finning is most prevalent. High level predators like sharks are VITAL to oceanic communities and the health and biodiversity of the ocean, these species need to be protected if our oceans are going to continue to survive. #shark #underwaterphotography #ocean #cleanocean #sharks #photooftheday #abstractphotography #nature #sharkphotography #underwaterphoto #nikon #d7200 #sandbarshark #motemarinelab #nikond7200 #natgeoyourshot #naturephotography #seaphotography #sharksarefriends #biodiversity #florida #sea #chondrichthyes #marinephotography #conservation #sharkconservation #natgeo #oceanlife

From our co-founder, @oceanramsey 💙🦈 ・・・ The natural world, it’s beautiful and complex. As we strive to better understand the dynamic marine environment many species are being removed faster than we can begin to fully appreciate their impact and importance. I hope, that even if we cannot fully understand a natural process, organism, or species, that given the opportunity to protect the natural world will be something we can all logically support until the data says that we should do otherwise. Support protection of sharks in your state of country by working to ban wasteful practices like shark fishing, shark finning, and the slaughter of sharks for pharmaceutical and souvenir trade. Sharks have been scientifically shown to be of more value alive. Not to mention it’s one of the most incredible and unique experiences to be in their presence. Ever respectful and looking around, diving down without a sound, spending time with these incredibly important apex predators is the highlight of my day and life. Thank you for helping to save sharks and marine life 💙🌊 #helpsavesharks and #SaveTheOcean @exploreorg #savesharks #sharks #marine #marinelife #hawaii #freediving #swimming #alive #life #reflection #ohana #discoversharks #oneocean #oneoceandiving #instagood #nature #sandbarsharks #galapagossharks #oceanramsey #haleiwa (at North Shore, Haleiwa, Hawaii) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwfYxGTBA_h/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1thgqxvihr7y4

A few bull shark photos from my snorkel trip last week!! Come see the bulls with me! I’m looking at running a shark snorkel trip Thursday afternoon, you can join me! Email [email protected] if you’re interested! Bull sharks are one of the most feared and notorious shark species in the world, come see the reality of how beautiful and misunderstood they are! I went free diving with around thirty sharks with my dive squad. Masks are overrated and as per most activities I ended up in my underwear. Thank you @skullandbones_nyc for the briefs, the sharks seemed to appreciate the look. The Sandbar Shark Carcharhinus plumbeus is one of the largest coastal pelagic sharks, and can grow to a length of eight feet long! True to its name, these animals are often found in sandy habitats close to land. What easily distinguishes the sandbar shark from other species is their large dorsal (top) fin. These sharks occasionally venture out to oceanic waters. In some areas, they migrate seasonally in response to changing water temperatures and localized upwelling events, which help provide food. They dine on bony fishes and smaller sharks and rays, as well as invertebrates like cephalopods, shrimp and snails. Unlike some sharks, the sandbar shark bears live young. As with most shark species, shark finning and overfishing have devastated the sandbar shark population in recent decades. This species is long-lived and produces few young, making them particularly prone to overfishing. Sandbar sharks are ranked as "vulnerable" Learn more about the incredible marine life in our world's oceans by visiting us at: www.theterramarproject.org Photo: Brian Norwood/Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 2.0) #OceanLife #MarineBio #Sharky #SandbarShark #Elasmobranchs #SeaHope #OceanOptimism #SavetheSharks #VitaminSea
