LaKeith Stanfield on New Horror Show
With a limited amount of pre-press happening for new shows right now due to the strikes, this “Inside Look” featurette teasing Apple TV+’s The Changeling may be one of few tidbits you can watch before the show arrives September 8. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing for this eerie adaptation of Victor LaValle’s novel, starring LaKeith Stanfield and Clark Backo as a couple facing a terrible,…

Future Islands – Radio City Music Hall – June 20, 2024

Expertly crafting music that lands in the Venn diagram overlap of New Wave, post-punk and synth-pop, Future Islands put out their acclaimed seventh studio LP, People Who Aren’t There Anymore, back in January.

And on Thursday night, just two dates into the North American leg of their tour in support of the album, the Baltimore four-piece made Radio City Music Hall sound like home.

(Future Islands play Franklin Music Hall in Philadelphia tonight.)

She's done hundreds of ops just like it, and was more than confident in her ability to get the job done alone considering she'd be dealing with civilian security.
Apparently Hargrove didn't feel the same way.
“Woah, woah, wait a minute—your codename is actually Connecticut? Like…the state of Connecticut?” The lanky marine asked, laughing when she didn't reply. “What, do you have 48 buddies named after the rest of the states? Is your boss Washington D.C?”
Connie clenched her fists by her side and grit her teeth in annoyance—over both his constant chattering, and how on the nose he was. Normally by now she would have said something, but for whatever reason she really didn't want to give this man the satisfaction of knowing he was getting to her. He gave her the same feeling York did when he was stressed and lost all social tact, though he was nowhere near as charming and endearing.
God, she missed him—missed all of them.
She was cut off from her thoughts by the strong, silent one clearing his throat.
“Since you're leading this operation Agent, what's our plan?”
Ah, right.
She still didn't like that she, of all people, was in charge here. She was the screw up, she had no leading capabilities, and for all intents and purposes wanted to keep it that way.
If only Wash or Carolina was here. Hell, she'd even take North or J.D in this situation.

Future Islands at Tower Labs

Full gallery available on my website here.
On Wednesday, January 24, 2024, Baltimore, MD’s Future Island performed their forthcoming album, People Who Aren't There Anymore, in its entirety during an intimate show at Tower Labs in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
What is Tower Labs? Great question! Their website calls it “a creative hub for musicians, artists, and entertainers.” I arrived to this creative hub a couple hours before the Future Islands performance was scheduled to begin and stood in line in a small parking lot of a brick loft building surrounded by newer condos by the Williamsburg waterfront. While waiting with friends, I realized that I hadn’t seen a show in this area in a very long time and thought about Death By Audio, which used to be nearby, naturally. I saw Future Islands open for Double Dagger at Death By Audio back in May 2010 but hadn’t photographed them and now regret it. I also saw them open for Dan Deacon in Baltimore at Copycat Annex but also didn’t take pictures of them then either. Then Death by Audio closed in 2014 and even though I attended Future Islands’ final show at that space, I didn’t shoot that performance as well (really kicking myself for leaving my camera at home that night), so I made sure to bring it to Tower Labs to make up for my mistakes in the past.
I didn’t get a creative hub vibe when I finally entered the space after 7:30PM. But maybe it felt like one earlier in the day when I was working at home and the band was scheduled to sign copies of PWATA and the new album was played for attendees. When I walked into the room, I immediately felt like I seeing a house show at someone’s loft and it made me nostalgic for when I used to do that much more often than I do now. Plus, seeing the red neon Tower Records sign on the back wall behind the stage reminded me of how often I used to shop at that record store when in my teens and 20s and would see acts like PJ Harvey, Franz Ferdinand, and The Fall perform at their Times Square and Union Square locations when their new albums were released like last night.
To attend this special performance, tickets were distributed for free via the Dice app and I requested one after Ellen told me (thanks again, Ellen!) but the ticket did not guarantee admission (hence the whole showing up hours early and standing in the parking lot thing). Despite being a little cold, and getting rained on, once I was inside and the band began, all was forgiven. I was immediately reminded that seeing Future Islands is such a joyful experience. The band plays, and then Sam dances and it feels like he’s looking and singing directly at you and you cannot help but smile. The Tower Labs crowd heard the first live performance of the new album two days before it is available to everyone else. We could also buy the album at Tower Labs too. The band ceased playing after the final song of the record, “The Garden Wheel,” with the audience clapping and cheering for an encore. But there wasn’t one. I immediately understood that we didn’t get an encore since they’ll be back on a proper tour soon. We’ll get more Future Islands next time.
Future Islands’ People Who Aren't There Anymore is available everywhere tomorrow (Friday, January 26, 2024) on 4AD Records.

Algiers – Shook (Matador)

youtube
On Shook, Franklin James Fisher, Lee Tesche, Ryan Mahan and Matt Tong sound refreshed, energized by collaboration and completely confident in their identity. Switching organically between punk, gospel, soul, hip hop, jazz and afro-futurism, Algiers speaks directly to a world under siege, a cacophonous ball of confusion from which they meld a cohesive interrogation of the violence at the heart of American power and a celebration of resistance and survival.
Fisher’s voice is a commanding presence throughout, and the call-and-response construction of many of the songs provides a unifying motif. In the adrenaline-fueled rushes of “Something Wrong” and “Good Man,” the band rediscovers the power that made their first two albums so compelling. But it’s the engagement with collaborators that provides the most interesting moments. Rapper Big Rube calls for resistance over a minimal orchestra swell and massed distant voices on “As it Resounds”; billy woods and Backxwash speak directly to police violence and the manipulation of white grievance over a skittering drum machine and piano motif on “Bite Back.” Mark Cisneros ties the Out Of Style Tragedy” of domestic weaponization to victory of political and financial self-interest as the band chants Sun Ra’s “Nuclear War” in the background. Jae Matthews provides the female counterpoint to Fisher and Samuel T. Herring on the lacerating “I Can’t Stand It.” LaToya Kent speaks from the perspective of a black mother: “Burying her feelings with the men she bore to life/Her heart heavier than the body.” On “An Echophonic Soul,” DeForrest Brown, Jr’s electronics and Patrick Shirioshi’s sax provide a keening background to an invocation of the other dead in the electric mist.
The record closes with Lee Bains III intoning, “When we die/The neighbors will bring casseroles/Drag shows will be held in our honor/… /The marchers in the boulevard will take their knee/Raise their fist/Drop their face/Silent in the midday traffic/Like a stone in a quick river/When we die, our beloved, our kinfolk/Fear not, we rise.” The song delivers a modicum of hope amid the bloodshed and culture war bullshit that drives it. At a time when black, female and queer lives and agency are being erased and their histories whitewashed, the diversity of voices and styles gives Shook astonishing power as an expression of possibility. Algiers may not have the answers but they’re damn sure asking the right questions. The material is here, heed the call.
As a sidenote, in January Queens producer King Vision Ultra released Shook World, a mix tape built on stems from Shook (supplied by Algiers) and his own sound archive featuring guests such as DJ Haram, ELUCID, Dreamcrusher and Dis Fig. It is envisioned as a companion piece rather than a remix, a conversation which broadens the scope of both records. It is well worth hearing and can be found here: https://algierstheband.bandcamp.com/album/shook-world-hosted-by-algiers

I would take five more seasons of Samuel and his shiny bald head over the men of letters is what I’m saying
#HENRY IS SO BORING. THIS EPISODE IS NOT HELPING HIM.#my opinion before rewatching was that I didn’t care about him#my opinion now is that he is annoying and making my experience of watching this episode worse.#man should have stayed a shadow over John’s life that echoed through his parenting of his sons rather than. A Guy.#at least Samuel was fun!!! samuel was willing to take out his own grandsons for his daughter!!! that was!!! idk fascinating man!!!!#his whole sure we’re blood but I don’t know you you’re not family my daughter is my family thing was an interesting mirror to the show’s#overall (attempted) theme of ‘family don’t end in blood and doesn’t start there either’#like he followed that to a T! he just happened to also do it while going against our main boys.#he was a Mary stan I respect him for that#plus imagine if she was revived and had to be around her father (previously demonically possessed and also kissed her)#this is a pro-samuel blog now akshfkjdlfj I’m so sorry Samuel that I was annoyed by you in s6 I see the truth now#I see how bad u could have been and I want u back mr Campbell
