An American journalist from Arizona who attempted to self-immolate in Washington DC said he became overwhelmed by how the US media, and by extension himself, framed Israel's war on Gaza and the killings of innocent Palestinians.
Samuel Mena on Saturday attended a pro-Palestinian rally, where he gave a speech about objectivity and both-sideism and chided American newsrooms for their coverage of the war.
"It is we, the American journalists, through lazy negligence at best or through corporate influence at worst, created the environment, incubated, and carried to term the tools that the leaders of our government would use to dismantle the truths of the world in which we live," Mena said in his speech, which he posted online a day before Saturday's rally.
"To the 10 thousand children in Gaza that have lost a limb in this conflict, I give my left arm to you. I pray my voice was able to raise up yours, and that your smiles never disappear," Mena said before lighting his left arm on fire.

Content warning: Mental illness, self harm, Old Person Rambling
I hope Samuel Mena Jr gets the help he needs.
From the Washington Post:
Tumblr media
Mena considered creating an “ambitious documentary,” he wrote, but decided that journalism, videos from Gaza, and voices of Palestinians “weren’t enough.” Instead, he wrote, he decided “conviction of will and bravery of the soul” were his only choice. “Today, I intend to demonstrate with as much of my conviction as I possibly can,” he wrote. Muna Hijazi, the state coordinator and communications director with the Arizona Palestine Solidarity Alliance, said Mena was unknown to the pro-Palestinian activist community there.
Sam Mena, seemingly moved by social media, skipped past trying to do anything actually useful or constructive and instead made it about himself. His conviction. His bravery. His will.
Mena made it about demonstrating his commitment to a cause he seemingly never fought for until he set his own arm on fire.
Again, I hope Mr. Mena gets the help he needs because this is not the behavior of a well person.
Some campus protestors don't seem to know what they're protesting for or against, but they do know they've formed an identity for which they're willing to hurt themselves or others...based on social media.
I'm an Old. I was an adult when social media came into existence and I was an enthusiastic early adopter. I loved how it let me connect with distant people who shared my views. I loved how it let me encounter brilliant people who disagreed with me, which forced me to revise my views.
I think that things which were views, beliefs, or opinions when I was between 15 and 25 years old have become identities for a lot today's young people.
Views, beliefs, and opinions can evolve, grow, and change with time, new information, or compelling discussions.
Identities, I think, are less flexible.
I vaguely recall a conversation online somewhere in which a Jewish person tries to explain that a particular statement about Israel was antisemtic and racist, and the reaponse was angry - something like 'You're threatening my identity as an anti-racist!"
The' identity' in this case serves as a bulwark against self-reflection, and seems to inhibit any meaningful conviction.
On Tumblr, I see people who identify as anti-racist who perceive no contradiction in throwing around racist remarks at people they don't like- and I wonder if this is because this sort of "identity" is a social signifier instead of a genuine understanding and supporting an idea, an ethic, or a creed.
This sort of 'identity', I sometimes think, is not a statement or description of personal belief, it's a self-issued membership card in socially constructed tribe.
These sorts of identities seem brittle. People who have their positions/opinions/views/beliefs challenged seem to feel personally attacked when encountering polite disagreement or a request to support their position with evidence or reasoning. The rightness and support for one's position is less important than one's conviction.
I worry that Sam Mena felt the need to prove something not about the plight of the Palestinian people, but about himself and his identity to his tribe.
I'd welcome discussion or reading suggestions.

Jungle - Dominoes
I’m always excited for every new Jungle music video. The one take mixed with the choreo just elevates the underlying music track. It’s also nice to see familiar dancers from previous tracks and new ones coming along for the ride.

"Only if you call me Emma freely, and if people question it you can tell them it's the princess' request, my dear," Emma smiled, squeezing her arm while all too happy to follow. She was perusing the crowd, curious to see who was Philomena's partner that night. Hopefully someone worth of her company. "As always, no plans, I am left tragically companionless. And with my hair and dress looking so nice this time, what a pity." It wasn't so much a pity as a reward for her misbehavior, not being kind to a man who had decided to impress her by being merciless to the needy that day. Men could be such idiots.

Fondness curls about her lips as she spots the other woman. "They didn't tell me we would have your esteemed company this evening, your highness." Philomena was quite pleased. She takes the other woman's arm. "I simply must insist you join us for dinner should you have no other plans."

I have been watching a lot of commentary on the Erica Mena's and Safaree Samuels' radioactive waste of a marriage and divorce and I noticed a lot of women seem to really believe that just because a man romantically pursues a woman for a long time that he must really love her.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but to many men pursuing a woman for a long time is the equivalent of standing in line to get new releases or limited editions from stores. They view and treat those women like literal objects. Some even care more for their things than they do for their romantic partners.
A man wanting you for a long time is not an indicator of how the relationship will unfold.
Because some of you can't comprehend simple shit, I am not saying women are objects, I am saying men treat women like objects.

Field Guide to Research
By: Faith Ortega
For this week's fact-checking journey, I ventured over to a useful site called Buzzsumo. Buzzsumo is a website dedicated to finding viral trends and topics throughout the world. But how truthful are these trends? I started investigating by picking one notable topic in the public eye from the last 24 hours. I set the Buzzsumo filters to 24 hours ago, all countries, English, and sorted by trending score to quickly see which recent news received the most attention.
Tumblr media
I scrolled for a bit before spotting a shocking headline: Anti-Israel Protester Lights Himself on Fire Outside of White House. The topic had a trending score of 40 and a 353 count for engagement. With such a distressing headline, I quickly wondered if this story was real.
Tumblr media
The Buzzsumo link led me to a Fox News article by reporter Anders Hagstrom: https://www.foxnews.com/politics/anti-israel-protester-lights-himself-fire-outside-white-house.
Before reading the article, I performed a quick assessment of both Fox News and Anders Hagstrom.
Tumblr media
A media bias checker revealed that Fox News typically holds a far-right viewpoint, has a mixed rating for factual reporting, and is marked as a questionable source. Although Fox News is a questionable source, this did not directly disprove the story provided yet.
Tumblr media
Next, I performed a Google Search for Anders Hagstrom to check his credibility and expertise. As a result, I found out he is a reporter for Fox News who regularly reports on national politics. By digging further, I found his LinkedIn profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anders-hagstrom-35a501122/. His profile showed a Bachelor of Arts degree in politics from Hillsdale College. At this point, it seemed that while the news source was possibly unreliable, the reporter for this story had enough expertise to write on the topic.
Next, I began reading the claims stated in the article “Anti-Israel Protester Lights Himself on Fire Outside of White House”. The article explains that a photojournalist named Samuel Mena Jr. lit his left arm on fire outside the White House on October 5, 2024. Mena screamed that the media was spreading misinformation and reportedly dedicated his act of fire to the victims in Gaza. The article also states that hours before Mena lit his arm on fire, he posted a blog online explaining the purpose of his actions.
If this story was true, it would be deeply impactful and head-turning. To verify this information I searched the identical headline of Anti-Israel Protester Lights Himself on Fire Outside of White House on Google.
Tumblr media
Many results populated, including similar articles from the New York Post and the Washington Post. I clicked on the New York Post article “Anti-Israel Protester Lights Himself on Fire Outside of White House, Video Shows”: https://nypost.com/2024/10/05/us-news/anti-israel-protester-lights-himself-on-fire-outside-of-white-house-video-shows/
The article verified all the information stated in the Fox News article, including the identification of the reporter, the words he shouted out, and his blog entry before the event. The article also included several photos and videos of the event all with stated sources such as Getty Images and Shutterstock.
Tumblr media
Because this event was reported on by many news sources such as Fox News, the New York Post, and the Washington Post, Fox News and Anders Hagstrom were telling the truth when they reported that a protester lit himself on fire outside the White House. The number of images and videos shared by verified photographers accompanying this story also verify the event.
Tumblr media
Lastly, when searching for Samuel Mena’s online blog, an entry posted the day of the event populates which verifies his personal reasons for lighting himself on fire. https://samuelmena.weebly.com/palestine
The blog entry ends with Mena saying, “To the 10 thousand children in Gaza that have lost a limb in this conflict, I give my left arm to you. I pray my voice was able to raise up yours, and that your smiles never disappear” (Mena). The blog itself contains information verifying Samuel Mena’s identity, including his portfolio, resume, and contact information.
Although Buzzsumo may contain trending topics of false origins, this shocking news story ended up being completely real.
