Naturally, Samsung released the next iteration of this device, the Galaxy A52 5G. While it doesn't get as much attention as Samsung's other devices like the Galaxy S21 series or its Foldable lineup, the Samsung Galaxy A series of devices are the ones that will end up in more people's hands. So, does the Galaxy A52 5G live up to its predecessor? Let's find out.

Design

The Galaxy A52 5G is as simple as phones can get; you're getting a very standard design, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The Galaxy A52 5G resembles its bigger cousins, the Galaxy S series of devices. Interestingly, the A52 looks more like the Galaxy S20 FE and Note 20 devices than it does Samsung's Galaxy S21.

The Galaxy S line is Samsung's safe bet on the flagship lineup, and the A52 is the safest device anyone can recommend, and that's especially true when it comes to design; this device is very much a practical phone with no frills.

On the front, you're getting a sizable 6.5-inch 1080p panel with a hole-punch camera. The screen is made of Gorilla Glass 5, and it should give you adequate scratch protection.

On the back, you'll find a plastic build that has the same matte finish as the base model Galaxy S21; it has a nice soft touch feel to it, and it feels great to hold.

Samsung sent me the Black color variant, and while it feels like the higher-end Galaxy S21, this finish is a fingerprint magnet. I found it quite cumbersome to clean the back of this device. I highly recommend getting a case if you end up getting this phone.

The back also houses the camera system, which looks similar to the Galaxy S20 FE, but Samsung refined the layout and took some design queues from its latest flagship. The S21 lineup used its metal frame to blend the camera module with the rest of the phone, and similarly, the A52's camera module seamlessly blends in with the rest of the back panel, almost as if it was one single piece of polycarbonate.

The sides of the Galaxy A52 are made of plastic, and they have a mirror look to make it look more like metal. You wouldn't notice the sides are plastic unless you happen to scratch them or pick up a more premium device to compare against.

The buttons are indistinguishable to its flagship cousins, and on the bottom, you even get a 3.5mm headphone jack—something that is missing in Samsung's flagship lineup.

While many will argue plastic feels less premium, I think Samsung made the right decision with this phone. Compared to my S21, the A52 is a larger phone, but when I picked it up, in contrast to my S21, I thought the A52 was lighter than my device. In reality, it's 20 grams heavier. Bigger phones generally feel unwieldy at times because of their size and weight, but choosing a plastic build all the way through makes the A52 feel like a much smaller device while getting the benefits of a larger battery and a larger display.

Overall, Samsung isn't going to wow anyone with the design of this phone, but that's not the point. The Galaxy A52 is a large device that brings practicality in a minimalist design, and for many people, it's sufficient for everyday use.

Display: Galaxy S21 Quality Without the Polish

The Galaxy A52 has the best screen I have seen in a mid-range device, and it shouldn't come as no surprise. This screen is essentially what you'll find on the Galaxy S21 and S21+, just without the polish. The Galaxy A52 packs a 6.5-inch, 1080p display with 120Hz. This screen size is in-between the S21 (6.1-inch) and the S21+ (6.7-inch). The resolution is the same as those two flagship devices, coming in at 1080 by 2400. The only difference between the Galaxy S21 and this A52 is the display brightness, the slightly worse-looking hole-punch camera, and the bezels.

The A52 has a maximum peak brightness at 800 nits, while the S21 can get up 1300. In real-world use, it is noticeable when you compare the devices side by side, but you're still going to be able to see the screen in direct sunlight.

The hole punch on the A52 is centered, just like the S21 series, but Samsung added a silver ring around the camera for some reason. It's distracting, even with the screen on. The silver ring is reflective, and it's always visible regardless of which angle you view it from. I've gotten used to it, but I think it was an unneeded design aesthetic that doesn't add to anything significant.

Finally, the bezels of the A52 are what make it short of its flagship cousins. The bezels on the A52 are generally larger than the S21, but the most noticeable aspect is the chin; the A52's chin is very prominent compared to the side and top bezels of the phone.

At the end of the day, comparing the A52 and S21 seems unnecessary. The two devices have marginal differences in display quality, and if you end up going with the A52, you won't be disappointed; the Galaxy A52's display is very responsive, vibrant, and has the same Samsung expertise most people have come to love. If you watch movies, play games, and use your device to edit photos, the display on the A52 is one of the best you could ask for at this price range. The only competition here is with Samsung's own devices.

Cameras

When it comes to the cameras, I think Samsung did a great job balancing the feature set for this price range. The Galaxy A52 comes with a standard 64MP wide, a 12MP ultrawide, a niche 5MP macro camera, and a wasteful 5MP depth sensor. There is also a 32MP selfie camera.

The standard 64MP camera captures 16MP photos in the regular shooting mode, and it delivers useable images that maintain detail, even when there is less than desirable lighting. It's also stabilized with OIS, and the videos coming out of this device are only second or third to something like the iPhone SE (2020) or the Pixel 4A.

The 32MP selfie camera is another excellent aspect of this camera experience; you're getting usable photos that retain a good amount of detail; the main issue is Samsung's software. The front camera has face-smoothing, and it can give off some unnatural-looking photos at times.

When it comes to the ultrawide, you're going to get usable results, but it lacks the consistency of its flagship counterparts, specifically in color. The sensor does well when you give it lots of light, but it can't keep up when you're in dimmer or harsher environments. The difference in HDR, colors, and detail is noticeable compared to the standard wide camera.

The two things that plague the usability of the A52 are its slow in-display fingerprint scanner and its sub-par vibration motor. For some reason, the optical fingerprint scanner on the A52 is just slow compared to the scanners on other mid-range devices, and this poorly reflects what this device is capable of; it takes a good second or two for the device to log you into the phone.

The vibration motor is another deficiency of this device; compared to the S21, the vibrations on the A52 feel loose and janky, but that's one of the trade-offs Samsung decided to make.

When it comes to battery life, however, the A52 is probably the best device in this price range to choose if you want a true two-day phone. Samsung packed a beastly 4,500mAh cell on this phone, and with its 1080p display and lower wattage processor, the A52 delivers the most consistent battery life across the board.

On typical use, you can expect to use this phone well into the next day without plugging it in, and even with every battery-hungry feature enabled like max brightness and 120Hz, it still took me much effort to kill this device in a day; it's that good.

Overall, the Galaxy A52 is a usable mid-range device that can consistently deliver adequate power for daily use. The 120Hz panel helps give off the impression of a more powerful device; coupled with its large battery, most users are going to love using this phone.

Should You Buy the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G?

For the most part, Samsung pulled the right strings in making the A52 an excellent midrange device; the screen is large, vibrant, and snappy, the battery life is just plain incredible, and the camera delivers sufficient quality that rounds out this phone's experience.

The main competitor of this phone isn't from another brand, but from Samsung itself. The Galaxy A52 exists in a space where you can still pick up the S20 FE, and if the rumors are true, Samsung is set to release the Galaxy S21 FE later this summer, and the price difference between the S20 FE and the A52 is marginally thin, especially if you consider the promotions Samsung and its carriers run all year-round.

I recommend the Galaxy A52 for what it delivers at this price point, but you would have to be constrained to this device's specific pricing to consider it over Samsung's other offerings—like the S20 FE—which is arguably more competitive.

Looking for a budget smartphone used to leave you saddled with a clunky handset missing several key features, but these days you can get a great phone for less. Two brands in particular have really nailed impressive specs for a small price. Motorola prides itself on value for money, with even its highest-spec handsets failing to break the £400 mark. And while Samsung is best known for its premium Galaxy S and Galaxy Note ranges, it also has several phones for those on tighter budgets in its reasonably priced A series. Read on to find out more about each brand’s latest budget handsets. Motorola and Samsung phones under £150

Let’s start with the truly budget phones. Motorola has more choice if £150 is your absolute limit, but there are some inexpensive offerings from Samsung too. If you pick a phone this cheap, expect slower processors, lower-resolution displays and pared-back cameras. It’s not all bad, though: some phones at this price point outperform premium handsets for battery life. Below we’ve pitted two of the brands’ cheapest phones against each other to see which, on paper, is the better bet. Motorola Moto G10 – £130

At first glance, we’re impressed with what Motorola’s offering for the money. It comes with four rear cameras, 64GB of storage (32GB is more common at this price) and, helpfully, an IP52 rating. This means it’s protected from dust and splash damage. The 48Mp wide lens on the back is a higher resolution than we’re used to seeing on phones this cheap, and it also has an ultra-wide, macro and depth lens too. There’s a choice of fingerprint or face scanner for unlocking the phone, which should give you flexibility when you’re wearing either a mask or gloves. It’s the cheaper phone in the G range. Spending a little more on the Moto G30 (£160) gets you a higher-spec camera, better processor and more internal storage. This is about as cheap as it gets if you want a big name on a budget. Don’t expect fancy features though, as this Galaxy is pretty stripped back. It has 32GB of storage (although this can be extended), three rear and one selfie camera, and just a face scanner for unlocking the phone. Samsung claims it’s kitted out this phone with ‘streamlined design aesthetics’, and it does have an impressive screen-to-body ratio for a budget phone, with just a small notch for the front camera, like the Moto G10. You can forgive the lack of add-ons if it’s a great phone, so check how well this phone fared in our tests in our Samsung Galaxy A02s review.  Verdict There’s a lot these phones have in common, from their 6.5-inch low-resolution LCD screens, large 5,000mAh batteries and NFC for making contactless payments – a feature you can’t take for granted when your budget is this low. However, the Motorola has more processing power (4GB of Ram vs Samsung’s 3GB), runs off the latest Android version (the A02s is lagging behind on Android 10) and its four rear cameras offer more versatility than the Samsung’s three. Where the Samsung edges it is on software updates. It benefits from four years of manufacturer security patches from the date of launch, which means you can keep the phone running safely for much longer than the Motorola, which is due to stop receiving support in 21 months. The G9 Power comes with an impressive 128GB of storage, which you can even extend if that’s still not enough. The 6.8-inch screen will make it a bit unwieldy for some, but it does mean Motorola can cram in a massive 6,000mAh battery – which should be more than enough to see you through a busy day. At 6.1 inches it’s much more petite than the Moto G9 Power, but the AMOLED screen packs in more pixels than the Motorola’s LCD. These types of displays usually score brilliantly in our tests, as they show off the colours and contrast in your content beautifully. You get 64GB of storage (although this is extendable), and four cameras in total, including a 48Mp wide-lens main camera on the back, and a 25Mp selfie camera. Verdict These Android 10 phones both have the same amount of Ram (4GB), but their strengths lie in different areas. Upping your budget to £250 brings in some fancier features including, in the case of the handsets below, 5G compatibility. Even if you don’t want a 5G contract straight away, it’s a good choice for futureproofing your phone. The two phones below also offer a little something extra for the money. Read on to see which you should pick based on their specs. Motorola Moto G 5G Plus – £230

We’ve come to expect big screens from Motorola, so the 6.7-inch display on this phone should come as no surprise. It’s encouraging to see a 90% screen-to-body ratio, which means you can make the most of the vast size for gaming or watching videos on the move. There’s enough room for a large 5,000mAh battery, plus you get a generous 128GB of storage. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765 processor, also found on the super-premium Samsung Galaxy S20, and has a decent 6GB of Ram to give it some heft. It’s gone big in the camera department too, with four on the rear (including a 48Mp wide lens) and two for your selfies. One of Samsung’s cheapest 5G smartphones, the A32 comes with 64GB of extendable storage, a large LCD screen (6.5 inches) and battery (5,000mAh). The MediaTek Dimensity 720 processor has performed fairly well our tests before, and with 4GB of Ram it should be able to cope with most of your multitasking. It has exactly the same rear camera setup as the Motorola Moto G 5G plus, but one less selfie camera, with just a 13Mp wide lens on the front. Verdict It’s great to see 4K video recording on both these phones (a step up from the cheaper handsets) and, of course, 5G compatibility. The Samsung comes equipped with Android 11 and it benefits from a long update policy, so you’ll be able to own it safely for longer. However, if you’re after the best phone for now, it’s hard to argue with the Motorola’s much higher display resolution, extra 2GB of Ram and additional selfie camera. Winner: Motorola

Why it’s important to consider mobile phone security

If you want a phone that lasts, you’ll need to consider not just how sturdy the hardware is, but how long the software will last too. Security updates are vital for patching up small holes in the software that could, over time, put your data at risk of being hacked. Security update policies vary between brands, andm unfortunately, it’s usually the cheaper brands with the smallest support timescales. Two years is common for brands like Honor, Realme and Xiaomi, vs five years for Apple. Motorola is one of the more transparent of the main smartphone brands on updates. You can clearly see on its website when individual handsets are due to run out of support. However, with just two years of support from launch, you could well run out before the end of a typical two-year contract, and you’d need to upgrade straight away once it finished. Samsung is one of the leading brands for security updates. Even some of its very cheapest handsets, like the Galaxy A02s featured above, will receive four years of updates (although this hasn’t always been the case, with some cheap Samsungs getting just two years). That’s why even though Motorola won two out of three of our heats, if you’re looking for longevity, it’s better to pick a Samsung. Should you buy Sim-free or on a contract?

If price is your main consideration, a Sim-free plan often works out cheapest overall. You’ll need to buy the handset outright (check our best mobile phone deals page for this month’s bargains), though, once set up, your monthly payments should be cheap. You can consider entering into shorter or rolling contracts that offer more flexibility. Contracts charge more per month to make up for the initial cost of the phone. However, they’re a good way of avoiding paying top whack for a premium handset, and they can help to build your credit score – as long as you keep on top of the payments. Just take care to make a note of when the contract ends, as you could end up paying the same amount after the end of the two or three-year period, once the phone is paid off. Most people don't need a rugged smartphone. If you work a desk job and don't spend a lot of time out in the wilderness, you can probably slap a regular case on your phone and not have to worry about anything.

However, if you work at a construction site or you're often outdoors, you need a phone that can take a beating. There's a whole world of rugged smartphones out there with waterproof ratings, the ability to withstand giant drops, and so on.

Today, we're going to take a look at one of those phones: the Blackview BV6300. Not only is it a rugged Android smartphone, but it's also quite affordable at less than $150. But there's a lot more to making a good phone than just making sure it can take a beating. Does the Blackview BV6300 bring the total package to the table, or is it just a little too affordable to keep up with the competitive smartphone market?

Blackview BV6300 Initial Impressions

If there's one thing Blackview has down to a science, it's the packaging. The boxes the company uses are sleek, and they make you feel like you're getting a high-end product, even though you're getting a cheap phone.

The positive first impressions continue when you open the box, as everything is packaged well, and it all looks great. You'll find the phone, headphones, power brick, and USB cable all right in front of you. Under the phone sits the documentation and even a screen protector that should further protect the rugged phone. (That's assuming you can put it on correctly. I'm horrible at putting them on straight.)

As for the phone itself, it's a decent-looking device. You can immediately tell that it's rugged based merely on the look of it. Despite the rugged look and feel, the phone isn't all that beefy. It doesn't look too large when compared to some other rugged phones on the market.

All in all, the Black BV6300 makes a pretty good first impression. Between the stellar packaging, aesthetically pleasing design, and size, you can't help but feel like you got a pretty good deal with how cheap this phone actually is.

Blackview BV6300 Rugged Design

The thing that will attract you to this device is the rugged design. The phone is designed to take a beating with its IP68, IP69K, and MIL-STD-810G certifications.

Blackview says it puts the phone through some extremely rigorous tests to make sure the phone is prepared to deal with some pretty intense treatment.

The company says it performed 12000 drops on the front side and 12000 times on the backside. It also does 6000 soft pressure tests on the front and 6000 times on the back. That sounds like a lot, but the company also performs a salt test for 48 hours and thousands of tumbling and distortion tests. By the time it released the BV6300, the company has made sure it can literally handle everything.

That's all well and good, but we needed to test the phone's ability to get beat up as well. Ultimately, it handled whatever we threw at it. While I didn't run it over with a car, I threw it around, stepped on it, kicked it, and put it in the water. No matter what I did, it kept on ticking. Obviously, you're not going to go out of your way to break the phone, but if an accident happens, you should be okay.

Every port on the phone is sealed with a cover, preventing water and dust ingress from causing damage to the internal. Speaking of powers, there's a USB-C and headphone port on the BV6300. Not many phones include headphone jacks anymore, so it's nice to have that option.

As for the glass, Blackview used Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which is not the latest tech from Corning, but it's still quite durable, and it held up as we tossed the phone around and put it through its paces.

Blackview BV6300 Specifications And Pricing

The first thing that's attractive about the BV6300 is the price. It's super cheap. Right now, it's $129, but the full MSRP is $179. Of course, at that price, the phone doesn't come with compelling specifications. Starting with the processor, Blackview included a MediaTek A25 12nm Octa-core chip. It's the very definition of an entry-level ARM SoC with its 1.8GHz. In terms of benchmarks, the processor is between the Qualcomm Snapdragon 429 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 439.

Also, on the entry-level side of the equation is the RAM, as Blackview only included 3GB. While it's basic, 3GB is actually a pretty decent amount of memory for ultra-affordable phones. For example, the LG K40, Moto E6, and Samsung Galaxy A11 (all of which retail for between $150 and $180) feature 2GB of RAM.

As for internal storage, the BV6300 comes with only 32GB. Fortunately, there's a MicroSD slot with support for up to 128GB, so you can add a lot more memory if you need to.

Blackview BV6300 Performance Tests

To test the phone, we put it through Geekbench 5 to see how the processor can handle a wide variety of tasks.

For its single-core test, it scored a 147, which puts it on par with phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Motorola Nexus 6, and OnePlus One. To provide a little more perspective, high-end flagships like the OnePlus 8 and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G score in the mid to high 800 range on the single-core tests.

For multi-core performance, the BV6300 got a 686. The Sony Xperia XZ has the same score, though that phone came out in 2016. Other phones in that same range are the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and the LG G5 SE. Those are both rather old phones as well, so that should give you an idea of what to expect. Again, for perspective, the highest score currently belongs to the OnePlus 8 with a 3224.

For our next test, we tried to run the phone through the Wildlife test in 3DMark. As this is an entry-level phone, we didn't have very high expectations, and we were right. The phone actually couldn't run the benchmark test at all.

So we tried the Sling Shot test in 3DMark, and while that benchmark worked, it felt like we were watching a slideshow. For the graphics tests, the phone averaged 2.3 frames per second. It ended up with a score of 530, which is not great, but about where we'd expect to see a phone at this price. According to 3DMark, that score is better than 19% of all phones that ran the test.

Blackview BV6300 Camera

The camera on the BV6300 is nothing special, but it's also not terrible for a phone at this price. It has a fundamental quad-camera setup on the back. The phone features a 13MP primary shooter and three 0.3MP lenses supporting the primary.

While the hardware won't knock your socks off, the phone can make up for that with great software. Unfortunately, taking photos with the BV6300 feels sluggish, and the pictures looked mediocre at best. In low light, the camera is basically useless, but even with my professional lighting, the pictures still look like they were taken with a camera from five or six years ago.

There are plenty of options for tweaking your pictures within the default camera app, but no matter which settings you adjust or which mode you shoot with, you're just not going to get great photos with the sensor on the BV6300. You'll get decent photos, but nothing that will blow you away.

If photography is important to you and you want an affordable, rugged phone, you're much better off looking at the BV6300 Pro, as its quad-camera setup features 16MP, 8MP, 2.0MP, and 0.3MP shooters.

If you're buying this phone as a work phone, you might not worry too much about the camera, but if you plan to use the BV6300 as an everyday phone, you'll be disappointed with the results.

Should You Buy The Blackview BV6300?

In the end, I have a hard time recommending the Blackview BV6300 as anyone's only phone. Yes, it's incredibly cheap and durable, but I found the mediocre specs and weak cameras lacking.

However, if you're looking for a phone that'll be used strictly while on the job site, and you're not concerned with anything other than the phone not breaking while making calls, sending texts, and performing essential functions, you should give this phone a look.
