OTHER NOTES:
Urgh, the whole ‘trans clone’ thing is very skeevy to me. Literally the whole thing, start to finish. Tatiana Maslany does hands down her worst work as a very unconvincing Tony, having Art refer to Tony as ‘she’ and requiring correction from Felix comes off super awkward and forced, and then the grotesque attention to Tony’s genital configuration and him getting up on Felix completes the awful cake. Since I haven’t finished the series, I don’t know if Tony magically becomes important later, but to my knowledge he’s just a one-off subplot with absolutely no purpose. Pro tip: writing a pointless trans character just so that you can deliver wooden ‘educating’ lines about pronoun use and then fall into the same-old-same objectifying trap of fixating on trans people’s genital status is not a good thing. This subplot only exists so that the creative team could pat each other on the back and feel like they ‘did a solid’ for the trans community, and guys, ya didn’t. A spot of bad facial hair does not a quality trans character make.
Tumblr media
Also, really, Tony’s subplot dominates the episode, it’s like it’s the A plot even though it’s essentially meaningless. We didn’t need this entire Tony sojourn to give us some blabber about Paul that isn’t actually important either. We certainly didn’t need an entire episode about how uncomfortable the show actually is with the idea of trans people? If they were actually comfortable with the concept, they would have been less awkward, less obsessed, and they wouldn’t have spent an entire episode weirding out about an idea that is no more ‘strange’ than the differences between any of the other clones. That’s the problem, really: the writing treats it as if Tony being trans is a wild idea that the characters all struggle to reconcile: how could ‘one of us’ be trans? How can the base model change that much from one individual to the next? Thing is, being trans or not isn’t more outrageous than being gay or not (we didn’t have this kind of wacky reaction to Cosima), nor is being trans instead of cis more outrageous than being a scientist vs being a soccer mom vs being a hustler vs being a religious extremist, etc, etc, etc. That’s the creative team putting their personal concept of what is ‘normal difference’ and what is ‘abnormal’ all over the episode, and it’s bad news. Tony SHOULD have been a bare-few-scenes subplot, for all the function he actually served for the plot. His trans identity should have been acknowledged and dismissed in the same breath for being irrelevant to anything, if it was openly acknowledged at all, because THAT is how you handle a guest trans character. Literally just like they’re a character, not an oddity. Also, if you’re gonna go there, do it properly: teach Maslany to lower her vocal register or augment it in post, because after being on T for long enough to cultivate that terrible fake soul patch, Tony oughta have a deeper voice. Also probably should have arm and leg hair, because he seriously does not seem like the kind of guy who’d be shaving body hair. Also seems a bit strange that he hasn’t had top surgery but has had bottom, though that does happen sometimes for a variety of reasons, so honestly it’s less odd to me than the absence of leg hair. Testosterone treatment will also bring with it redistribution of body fat though, so regardless of breast situation, the rest of Tony’s body should look less like all the cis clones. But hey. That’d all be a lot of effort, wouldn’t it? And we just wanted the brownie points. How the fuck did we follow up Leakie’s death with something this irksome? How did Cosima’s health taking a turn for the worst get tied in to an episode that is mostly so skippable?
P.s. oh yeah! To cap it all off, is Tony a plot hole? If Beth had contact, that means Cosima and Alison should also have been aware of him already, and he would have been in Cosima’s clone-list. Why would Beth have kept him a secret? Nice job, writers. You were THAT busy congratulating yourselves...

WILDERNESS MOVIE WELCOMES MUSICIAN MALLORY JOHNSON
If you have not yet heard the name Mallory Johnson, or been able to hear her amazing voice, you are in for a treat. Johnson, along with acting talent and her incredible music, will be a beautiful addition to the Into the Wilderness movie. While taking time to collaborate with other songwriters, she has been hard at work writing a few new songs that will not only be used in the film, but Johnson herself will be singing on camera as she steps into her first featured role in the movie.
Born and raised in Canada, Mallory Johnson has been singing since she was old enough to make a noise. Her first public performance was at the ripe old age of three when she hopped onto the stage and she belted out the ‘I love you’ theme song to the popular children’s television show, “Barney and Friends” for a small crowd.
Johnson has come a long way since those early childhood performances and has developed into quite the musical wunderkind. From the age of eleven and for several years after, Mallory Johnson was in a Celtic band called the Cormiers with her family.  The band consisted of Mallory along with her mother, Loretta Johnson, as well as her uncle and cousin, Gordon and Randall Cormier. The Cormiers recorded four records and won numerous music awards during their time together.
Johnson was contacted by her agent, Cathy Nakos in Nashville, Tennessee earlier this year and asked if she wanted to audition for a role in the movie. She said her agent told her to bring her guitar along and when she showed up for the audition, she said she decided to just do the best she could and see how it would go.
During her audition, we were beyond impressed with her talent and of course, it didn’t take long to realize that we needed her for Into the Wilderness.  Her voice is powerful yet angelic, as you can hear in her music and her presence is unforgettable.
Johnson is the winner of the 2017 Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Spotlight Performance contest and she has been nominated for Country Artist of the Year, Female Artist of the Year and Rising Star for the 2018 CCMA music awards.
Mallory told us that her biggest inspiration has been her mom, Loretta Johnson, who has been a musician her entire life, sang with The Cormiers and recorded numerous albums. She has also been inspired by greats including Dolly Parton and Emmy Lou Harris because, as she told us, these are strong women who are not afraid to break the mold.
Break the mold is exactly what Mallory Johnson has done with her talent. Her manager, country music legend Sammy Kershaw, was asked about Johnson during a 2015 interview with Nashville Country Club where he stated, “This girl can sing!” He went on to say that her pitch was so good that she had country in her soul and it was unbelievable that she had been just sitting out there.
We’re happy to have Mallory Johnson join the Into the Wilderness movie and we look forward to her musical as well as acting talent when she films later this month.
Johnson will be performing on stage in Nashville, Tennessee later this month, so be sure to catch her show if you’re in town. You can find her upcoming shows at the following link:
