This is also just good to keep in mind in general as several people submitted actors for shows that aren't eligible for our tournament either because it was outside our time period or in one case the actor was underaged for the entirety of the show (though many were eligible for other shows they were submitted for). We do our best to screen for these things but sometimes it's hard to tell or it’s a show we don't personally know well enough so we appreciate help from y'all letting us know if you do catch anything.

"Miracle in East Texas" is a 2019 family comedy film directed by Kevin Sorbo and starring Kevin Sorbo, John Ratzenberger, Louis Gossett Jr., Tyler Mane, Sam Sorbo, and Paula Boudreau. The movie is inspired by a true story and centers around two con-men during the Great Depression who scam lonely widows out of hundreds of dollars by promising them riches from oil wells that they know are dry. Notoriety in Oklahoma forces the two men to take their scheme to Cornville, Texas. However, in the midst of their deception, they actually strike oil, pitting them against jilted lovers, angry investors, and a no-nonsense judge. The movie premiered exclusively in select theaters on October 29 & 30th through Fathom Events.

Movie Review | Dolly Dearest (Lease, 1991)

I’m always interested in how porn directors adapt to mainstream features, and from a number of examples I’ve seen, you definitely notice difficulties with the pacing, when you have to fill up at least ninety minutes of runtime and don’t have the requisite sex scenes to pad it accordingly. And while I don’t think this is an especially good movie, nor one that particularly bears its director’s signature, I will say that Maria Lease doesn’t have the same problem, and in fact seems to take the horror elements quite ably. Between the windy nighttime scenes and the sweltering daytime scenes, there’s some pretty solid atmosphere to be found here, and at least one pretty gnarly kill gore gag involving a sewing machine.

This is a Child’s Play knockoff with a few distinguishing features. One, while all children’s dolls are creepy, this still looks believable, like something you might actually find in a toy store. Two, there is more than one doll, and some of the scares involve multiple dolls scuttling about and sneaking up on characters. Three, as the dolls get more evil, they get old and wrinkly for some reason. I’m not sure how intentional this was. Four, the premise involves a family moving to Mexico to take over a doll factory, which lends itself to some political commentary that the movie doesn’t quite flesh out.

As far as the family unit goes, the child actors are surprisingly not terrible, which is a big risk with these things. The daughter does a nice job sneering anytime she sees a cross or any display of religiosity, like I assume the atheist characters do in one of those Kevin Sorbo movies. And the son gets a badass one-liner when he blows away one of the dolls with a shotgun. What really sinks the movie are the surprisingly terrible adult performances. Sam Bottoms looks like his brain is still fried from ‘Nam, Denise Crosby is entirely wooden, and Rip Torn seemingly changes his accent multiple times over the course of a sentence. So maybe there’s fun to be had in that respect as well, although whatever empathy and nuances in perspective Lease brought to her porn work seem to be absent here. I’m a little disappointed that my exploration of Lease’s career is ending on this middling note, but the movie is not entirely without its charms.

I find this greatly offensive on a personal level! I am from a multi-generational family of teachers! My great-grand aunt, grandmother, mom, and brother were all public school teachers! Mom was a one-time president of the South Carolina Teacher's Association! She taught mostly middle school and high school classes. As a child, I remember every year she spent a lot of family money setting up her classroom. My parents were also very-much old-school Republicans!

Teachers have never been paid the wages they are worth, but were usually afforded great respect, at least until modern MAGAt Repugs climbed out of the scum pond of Fascism!

Ellen estaba lavando platos cuando escuchó un golpe en la puerta. Por el momento, vivía felizmente con Bobby. El hombre en cuestión estaba sentado en su escritorio, repasando la historia de un cazador perplejo sobre una serie de asesinatos en Iowa, y el golpe lo hizo mirar fijamente a la puerta principal.

—Bueno, no estoy esperando a nadie.

Ellen asintió y se dirigió a la puerta. Apartó la cortina y frunció el ceño. La abrió y se quedó mirando al arcángel rubio que había al otro lado.

—¿Lucifer? Creí que te habías ido con los chicos. 

—¿Puedo pasar? —preguntó suavemente.

Eso era lo que pasaba con Lucifer, pensó Ellen. No era lo que cabría esperar del Diablo. Diablos, de los tres chicos ángeles, Castiel era el que más se parecía al Diablo con su pelo oscuro y desordenado y sus bonitos ojos azules, mientras que Gabriel era el que más se parecía al Diablo con su actitud. Lucifer parecía tan educado y modesto que a veces resultaba difícil recordar que ese tipo era la razón por la que existían los demonios.

—Claro, entra cariño —dijo ella.

Lucifer entró y miró a su alrededor. 

—Ven y siéntate.

Bobby entró en la silla de ruedas. 

—No esperaba que vinieras solo.

—Yo… Necesito un consejo.

Las cejas de Ellen se elevaron. 

—¿Oh? ¿Un consejo sobre qué?

Lucifer parpadeó y miró al suelo. Permaneció tanto tiempo en silencio que Bobby estuvo tentado de salir de la habitación. Como mínimo, probablemente necesitaba un poco de whisky que le ayudara a enfrentarse a lo que Lucifer estuviera a punto de echarles encima. Justo cuando estaba a punto de darse la vuelta, Ellen se aclaró la garganta.

—¿Qué tal si te sientas y tomamos un café?

Lucifer asintió y Bobby se acercó a la mesa. 

—Muy bien chico, ¿Qué es lo que tiene tus bragas torcidas?

Eso le valió al viejo cazador una serie de rápidos parpadeos. 

—Me gustas.

Ellen resopló mientras Bobby arqueaba una ceja. 

—Bien. Siempre quise la aprobación de Satanás.

Esto pareció romper la aparente timidez de Lucifer. 

—Cuando Gabriel vino a mí, acordé una tregua. Dejaría de guiar activamente el apocalipsis, y Gabriel tendría carta blanca para convencerme de que perdonara a la humanidad. Lo admito, entré en el acuerdo con intenciones menos que honorables. No trabajaría activamente para promover mis objetivos, pero si Sam llegara a confiar en mí...

Bobby abrió la boca para criticar al ángel, pero Ellen negó con la cabeza mientras dejaba dos tazas de café frente a ellos. 

—¿Qué cambió, cariño?

La mirada escéptica de Bobby se volvió hacia ella. Ellen lo ignoró a favor de prestar atención al ángel. 

—Castiel. Él… nos extrañaba. Él piensa que tengo razón. Él es… él es mi hermano pequeño. Si continúo en el curso que me propuse, lo lastimaría. Lastimaría a Gabriel. Estaría matando a Dean y casi haciéndole lo mismo a Sam.

—Finalmente sacaste la cabeza de tu culo —murmuró Bobby. Ellen le envió una mirada sucia.

—Sí —Estuvo de acuerdo Lucifer—. Sigo creyendo que la humanidad en general es una desgraciada plaga para el mundo… 

—Ya sabes que no estoy en desacuerdo —murmuró Bobby.

—¡Robert Steven Singer! —Ellen siseó.

— -pero, me gustan ustedes dos —continuó Lucifer, atrayendo sus miradas hacia él—. Me gusta Dean. Él… él me recuerda a mí mismo. Me recuerda un poco a Michael. Yo… Lo extraño. —Miró a Ellen—. Y me gusta Jo. Ella . . . Ella me besó en la frente. Se rió conmigo de Sam. 

—¿Y qué hay de él? —Ellen presionó suavemente.

El arcángel también tomó un sorbo del café, saboreando el ligero dulzor de la crema que ella le había agregado. 

—Recordaste cómo lo tomó.

—Sí —dijo Ellen con una sonrisa—, conozco todas las bebidas de mis clientes habituales.

Lucifer la miró, sus penetrantes ojos azules llenos de asombro. 

—Hace una semana, con mucho gusto te habría roto el cuello.

—Y hace una semana todavía eras un niño pequeño perdido —respondió Ellen—. He visto muchos de ellos. cazadores… ¿los hombres? —Ella sacudió su cabeza—. Muchos de ellos perdieron a alguien joven y empiezan la vida cuando apenas acaban el instituto. Siempre me doy cuenta porque tienen esa mirada que a veces tienes. Tu padre hizo mal dejándote en una jaula. Ahora, ¿hiciste bien creando demonios y haciendo un berrinche? No. Y tienes que hacerte cargo de la gente a la que has hecho daño, pero encerrarte o matarte no solucionará nada. ¿Y tú estando aquí? ¿Ayudando a Sam y Dean y negándote a ser el monstruo que tu familia intenta convertirte? Eso hará más por el mundo que matarte.

Bobby frunció el ceño. 

—Ella no está equivocada, hijo. No podemos traer de vuelta a las personas que has matado, pero podemos asegurarnos de que nadie más salga herido.

Lucifer negó con la cabeza. 

—¿Podrías por favor no decirle a nadie sobre esto? Yo... Sam acaba de comenzar a permitirme hablar con él civilizadamente y no quiero perder eso.

Ellen y Bobby compartieron una mirada. 

—Los secretos siempre salen a la luz, chico.

—Lo sé —dijo Lucifer—, y planeo admitirles lo que contemplé. Solo que no ahora.

Bobby suspiró y puso los ojos en blanco. 

—No diré nada, pero será mejor que lo reconozcas pronto. Sam tiene mal genio con él.

Lucifer asintió. Ellen se puso de pie y miró el reloj en la pared de la cocina. 

—Aquí, cariño, ¿has comido?

—Yo no-

Ella sacudió su cabeza. 

—¡No, escucha, chico ángel! Esa era una pregunta de sí o no.

Lucifer miró a Bobby, que acababa de tomar un sorbo de café.

—No. No he comido.

—Está bien. Te estoy preparando el almuerzo y luego puedes regresar con los chicos. Estoy seguro de que se preguntarán adónde te has metido.

—Estoy orgullosa de ti, Bobby.

—¿Por qué?

—Porque te las arreglaste para tener toda esa conversación sin lloriquear por un trago o quejarte por compartir tus sentimientos.

Bobby resopló desde donde estaba en su escritorio. Lucifer todavía estaba terminando su hamburguesa que Ellen había insistido en hacer para el almuerzo. Miró entre los dos y sonrió un poco. Había decidido que Ellen era una Eiswein, dulce pero aguda. Sus palabras podían cortar como un cuchillo o brindar un bálsamo al alma.

Bobby negó con la cabeza. 

—Probablemente hubiera sido mejor si hubiera tomado una copa —murmuró.

—¡Escuché eso!

Lucifer terminó su comida y obedientemente llevó el plato al fregadero. 

—Gracias.

Ellen le sonrió. 

—Sabes que te estoy dando una gran oportunidad aquí, ¿verdad?

Él asintió, consciente de que la cazadora le estaba otorgando mucho crédito por su confianza. No tenía forma de saber si él no volvería a sus viejas costumbres egoístas. Pero Gabriel había salido de su escondite y Castiel se había rebelado. Lucifer podría intentar vivir en paz con la humanidad incluso si nunca se inclinara ante ellos como Dios había querido. Luego miró a Bobby. Caminó hacia el hombre mayor. Sabía que no significaría mucho para ellos, pero estaba decidido a devolverles al menos un poco.

—¿Sí? —Bobby preguntó, levantando la vista de su libro.

Lucifer no respondió, solo puso una mano en la espalda baja de Bobby. Encontró la herida fácilmente. Una columna vertebral mellada. No es difícil de arreglar. Bobby gritó, haciendo que Ellen se tensara. Lucifer lo soltó tan pronto como terminó, y volvió al sórdido motel que había dejado no hace mucho. Los otros estaban holgazaneando alrededor del Impala. 

—Ahí estás —dijo Dean—, estábamos preocupados.

Lucifer asintió. 

—Mis disculpas. Yo-

Fue interrumpido por el timbre del teléfono de Sam. El joven lo comprobó. 

—Espera, es Bobby.

Lucifer de repente se sintió nervioso, y en el chat grupal de ángeles, Gabriel se acercó tentativamente. No usó palabras, solo emociones.

—¡Vaya, vaya, disminuya la velocidad! ¿Lucifer hizo qué? —Sam dijo con los ojos muy abiertos.

Dean se tensó, y Castiel y Gabriel lo miraron con recelo. Apretó los dientes, deseando que Ellen y Bobby no los hubieran contactado.

—¿En realidad? ¿Está caminando? ¿Cómo si nunca hubiera pasado nada? —Sam se volvió hacia Lucifer y el teléfono se alejó de su cara— ¿Curaste a Bobby?

De repente, todas las expresiones se volvieron atónitas. 

—Bueno, sí. Eso... Eso parecía lo correcto.

La voz de Bobby saltó con fuerza desde el altavoz. 

—¡Lucifer! ¡Ponlo al teléfono!

Sam obedeció. Lucifer dijo suavemente: 

—¿Sí?

—Trae tu culo pálido de vuelta aquí en este instante.

Lucifer le devolvió a Sam su teléfono e hizo lo que le pedía. Por un momento contempló no escuchar a Bobby, pero una parte de él tenía curiosidad por saber qué le haría el humano. Tan pronto como apareció fuera de la puerta, se abrió de golpe. Bobby lo miraba como si Lucifer hubiera matado a su perro. 

—¡Ven aquí, idiota!

Nuevamente, Lucifer obedeció por curiosidad y se encontró envuelto en un fuerte abrazo. 

—Gracias —susurró Bobby.

Decir que Lucifer realmente no esperaba esto era quedarse corto. Por un largo momento se congeló, aunque Bobby no dejó ir su rigidez. 

—Fue mi culpa. Necesitaba arreglarlo.

—Aún así —murmuró Bobby—, aún así.

Lucifer finalmente le devolvió el abrazo.
