HAMILTON Birmingham Hippodrome, Wednesday 3rd July 2024 On the eve of Independence Day, how fitting to see the hit musical that recounts the history of that turbulent period! And herein lies the trouble with this show: it’s not a period with which we Brits tend to be familiar. We were taught about Henry VIII and his wives. We certainly we not told about Alexander Hamilton, the show’s…

Lessons to Learn from Rejection of Sanwo-Olu’s 3 Commissioner, Special Adviser Nominees
Lessons to Learn from Rejection of Sanwo-Olu’s 3 Commissioner, Special Adviser Nominees There is a general saying that ‘the grace of God can take a person above the sky but only his character can sustain him.' This is the exact story of what happened to the three of Governor’s Sanwo-Olu’s commissioner and special adviser nominees; Ms Adekemi Ajayi-Bembe, Mr Obafemi George and Prince Olanrewaju Sanusi that were rejected by the House of Assembly on the 19th August, 2019. Upshot reports that the Lagos State House of Assembly rejected three of the 38 Commissioner and Special Adviser nominees of Governor Babajide after the completion of screening by the ad-hoc committee of the House. It was amazing that some of the well wishers of the nominees were in the Chamber of the House awaiting their confirmation, but the story changed suddenly. Their characters was against them at the verge of their success. A reliable source told Upshot that Ms Ajayi-Bembe most especially would have enjoyed a second chance when she was called upon privately for questioning by the principals officers of the House. They revealed that she was rude and so could not get the opportunity. The same story was told of Obafemi George and Olarenwaju Sanusi. One of the major lessons from the incident is that people must be mindful of their characters. Surprisingly, pictures and profiles of the rejected nominees were included in the inauguration pamphlet of Tuesday 20th August, 2019, thinking that all of them would be confirmed. Some of their well wishes must have bought clothes to celebrate with them but unfortunately their characters closed the doors of success for them. However, a human right lawyer, Chief Giwa-Amu said in an interview that it was the prerogative of the House of Assembly to reject nominees of the Governor. “They might have acted on information that we are not privy to and if it is for the betterment of the State; it is all well and good. There is nothing that says the Assembly must confirm all Governors’ nominees. Though the Speaker of the House, Mr. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa said that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu might represent them if he wished to do so; the question is will he do so? Those cleared for nominations as commissioners and special advisers and who have since been inaugurated were Mr Oladele Ajayi, Mr Oluwatoyin Fayinka, Mrs Yetunde Arobieke, Mr Kabiru Abdullahi and Mr Joe Igbokwe. Others were Mr Bonu Solomon Saanu, Mrs Lola Akande, Prince Anofi Elegushi, Mrs Solape Hammond, Mr Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, Mrs Shulamite Adebolu, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, Mr. Rabiu Olowo Onaolapo, Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, Professor Akin Abayomi, Dr. Idris Salako, Mr. Tunji Bello, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka and Mrs. Bolaji Dada Also cleared were Mr. Lere Odusote, Dr. Frederick Oladeinde, Mr. Gbolahan Lawal, Dr. Wale Ahmed, Mr. Moyo Onigbanjo (SAN), Mr. Hakeem Fahm and Mrs. Ajibola Ponle. Sanwo Olu Nominates Nation Editor, Omotoso, Tunji Bello, 23 others Commissioners
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Sunday, transmitted a list of Commissioner-designates to the House of Assembly for ratification. The list contained twenty five names, who are to assume duty as Commissioners and Special Advisers upon ratification by the legislature. A statement by the Governor’s Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, said Sanwo-Olu carefully picked the nominees based on their cognate experience in their respective professions. The list, Akosile said, comprised names of technocrats and politicians, who understand the challenges of the state, noting that the painstaking and laborious selection process was aimed at constituting the best team that will serve Lagos in line with the agenda of his administration vision of delivering a city-state that will rank among the top most liveable cities in the world. The statement said: “We took our time to pick the best hands for the tough job Lagosians have elected us to do. The nominees for the twenty five Commissioner and Special Adviser positions include women and men who have made their mark and at the zenith of their professional callings.’’ Governor Sanwo-Olu’ media aide stated further that the current list is first batch, saying that consultation was going on with regard to the complete number of the cabinet members. He further disclosed that the new cabinet would be unique, because of its diversity. Quoting Governor Sanwo-Olu, he said Lagos would continue to take the lead in innovation, gender-balance and youth inclusion in the administration of the State. “We have a blend of youth who are under 40 among nominees for Commissioners and Special Advisers. Women too are well represented in the list. We believe Lagos deserves the best and we cannot give the people anything less than that,” the statement said. Breaking down the list of nominees, there are 17 men and eight women that will be sworn in as members of the State Executive Council. Also in keeping his promise of millennial’s inclusion, Governor Sanwo-Olu included youths who are in their early and mid-thirties in the list of nominees. The State House of Assembly is expected to carry out a screening of the nominees to set the machinery of governance in full swing. Below are names of the nominees: 1. Mr. Rabiu Olowo Onaolapo 2. Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo 3. Prof. Akin Abayomi 4. Dr. Idris Salako 5. Mr. Tunji Bello 6. Mr. Gbenga Omotoso 7. Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka 8. Mrs. Bolaji Dada 9. Mr. Lere Odusote 10.
