Elena Gilbert stops being boring the moment you stop viewing tvd as romance and start viewing it as a gothic horror of an underage girl groomed into an incestous love triangle between two serial killing brothers.

Her parents are dead and she only finds comfort in graveyards, her thoughts are filled with death. Then she meets these guys who CANNOT DIE and she even canonically says that's what drew her to Stefan (and let's be honest it's exactly the same with Damon). These older men want to protect her and they desire her obsessively and they form a weird, weird little family dynamic where Elena is constantly treated like a child. Elena latches onto these guys who don't only fill the role of boyfriends but also the role of parents. How she acceps the role as daughter/lover/victim of the Salvatore brothers could be fascinating if the narrative acknowledged it for what it is - horror.

I've started watching the vampire diaries for the first time and I hate it that it's such a popular show that when I say I watch it ppl go "oh team delena or team stelena?" like, you don't understand. My tastes are very particular. It's so much worse.

Hi friend! Thank you for this question, I love getting asks. Also thinking about this kept me entertained trhough my day at work so a special thank you for that lmao! I read the seven original books for the first time over 10 years ago but I've been rereading now so 3,5 of them are bright and new in my mind so I'll concentrate on those!

TVD books fun facts:

• In the books vampires (if they drink human blood) can turn into animals. For example, Damon is often a crow, and he also turns into a black dog to fight Katherine, who is a white tiger in the scene

• Book Elena is definitely a Defan shipper. In book 3 she dies (temporarily) and her last wish is for Damon and Stefan to take care of each other

• Katherine is also a Defan shipper. It's basically canon she wanted polyamory and the only reason she faked her death was bc she thought her death would bring Stefan and Damon together

• For some reason I was convinced they're twins in the books but that's apparently not true. But they do only have 3 year age gap in the books.

• In the books they always competed with each other and weren't good friends, even pre-Katherine

• Damon always calls Stefan "little brother" instead of his name and Stefan considers this to be derogatory (I, on the other hand consider it affectionate)

• Book Damon doesn't kill that many people, he's still a grey area character but not a genuine serial killer like the show version (he almost never kills the humans he feeds on)

• Also even though book Damon is also a ladies man he doesn't have that many girlfriends during the course of the books (actually I don't remember anyone else than Elena and Bonnie and he never even really dates either of them)

• Damon and Stefan are from renaissance Italy, born 1487 & 1490. They both have black hair and dress mostly in black designer wear

• In the books there's a scene where Damon forces the sunlight ring on Stefan's finger (to protect him) so I consider them engaged now

Honestly I wish I could put some quotes bc some of them are fanfic level Defan BUT I'm not reading the books in english so I can't, but there's stuff where Stefan is literally said to put his face in really close to Damon's and be like "do you enjoy seeing klaus kill? does he let you watch?" which is so funny and sexual. I'd love to post more of these as I continue my reread, I remember as a teen liking the last 3 books most and there's more Damon content in them too if I remember correctly. FYI: the books aren't very good, but if you're desperate they do offer some good defan content, and they're kinda entertaining.

Hiya friend!! Here I am, bothering you with asks! Whereabouts in TVD are you now and did you get interested in any ships beside Defan? Also, whats your favorite Defan moment so far?

Thank you for the ask! I just finished season 4. I don't really ship anything else as much as defan, but I like Klaus/Caroline and I find Stefan/Klaus an interesting and somewhat homoerotic dynamic. Damon/Alaric is very good too, but more as a brotp though they have some romantic chemistry too. Klaus/Elijah has potential too. I like Caroline/Tyler, they're very cute, and I really think Caroline/Klaus/Tyler should just be in a polyamorous relationship. I'm rooting for Elena/Matt but that's less of a ship and more just something that I think would make most sense (though I do think Elena has the best chemistry with Matt even though she has very little chemistry with anyone).

Hmmm my fav Defan moment so far is hard! I loved the bittersweetness of the moment when Stefan and Damon were about to go to war together but Lexi told Damon he shouldn't go and Damon decided to put Stefan's wellbeing above his own missing of his brother 🥺 "Did you ever think that I needed my little brother" 🥺🥺 Also the one in first season where Stefan saves Damon from the fire is a great moment. Their fight scenes are also fun bc they're so sexual - WHY DO YOU ALWAYS GO FOR THE CHOKING AND WHY DO YOU NEED TO BE THAT CLOSE TO SCREAM??

This exactly!! This is why I wish tvd could've been more adult and more centered on the brothers dynamic bc it's easily the best part of it. The toxicity of "i hate you but i hate my life without you even more" is so delicious and i wish they tapped into it more. Like they exist only to torment each other in such a subtextually sexual way I love it, and that's why it makes me so sad how, well, bad the show is in reality. How much high school drama and wattpad level romance they had to fit there when they had the absolute GEM of the Salvatore family dynamic.

The delicious thing about Defan's co-dependency is it comes in a way you rarely see in media.

I think if you look at relationships like Sam & Dean, they're used to just being around each other always. One can't really survive long without having the other by their side.

Spoilers below the cut for both Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries.

With Defan, they're perfectly fine being apart from each other for decades a time. The issue is they simply cannot quit one another. Even when their dynamic is at it's most toxic, Damon is thinking of all the ways he can ruin Stefan's life next. Meanwhile, Stefan is in some ways always waiting for Damon to come back into his world. That cat-and-mouse game is what they depend on. Without it, they're lost.

Then they rebuild that bond and still have their struggles but at the end of the day will always forgive each other because they cannot live life without the other. They have spent centuries being so intertwined that they cannot picture life without each other. They need that to get them through.

Even when Damon is angriest with Stefan, he is so damn possessive. Whether it be his issues with Klaus or Lexi. Stefan is his baby brother.

I constantly see theories that we don't really know when Damon died. There's a chance he and Elena didn't actually have a happy ending. Especially considering their individual peaces are reuniting with family vs eternity with one another. Maybe Damon truly could not live a long human life without his baby brother. It differs from SPN. We see that Sam lived a long, average life and died of old age. Versus Damon who goes from the cemetery with Elena to suddenly the afterlife.

I'm not even suggesting Damon offed himself. Just that without Stefan, he was even more reckless. Combined with not used to being human, I could see him getting hurt in some way and subconsciously bringing himself back to his baby brother.

These two are so freakishly co-dependent and need massive therapy...but it's also oh-so-much-fun to watch.

It’s so good! Maybe the best Defan/Salvacest multi chapter fic I’ve ever read! I’m still at chapter 8 but it looks like I read 30 chapters already because it has so much development and details about their personalities and characters, it’s really amazing

TOO BUSY IN MY DEFAN HAPPY PLACE. I don't even care about everything else that happened in the episode. 

BUT DEFAN THO. Stefan making such a Stefan choice, when faced with Elena's or Damon's death. he decides to offer up his own instead. So perfect. And Damon. He's feeding off Elena, unable to stop himself, not in a thinking mindset only controlled by urges alone, and yet Stefan coaxes him away from his meal with his own blood. Given he has already got his feed in his hands why would he give it up? Possibly because he knows it will kill Elena, but I don't think that's it. It's because he wants Stefan's blood MORE, it's more enticing to him. Vampires feeding from vampires is a sexual thing. Despite knowing this and that Elena is Damon's true love, Stefan still knows it will work, because he understands their relationship. 

ALSO LOVED their scene near the end, okay still upset they seem to have skipped over Stefan's character development, but I love the whole coming full circle, Stefan helping Damon to control his ripper aspect just like Damon helped Stefan. Also suggestive of Stefan having developed to that point, which I don't think he has, but intrigued to see where they go with it. I just want Stefan training Damon, offering his own blood if Damon's very good, because Damon wants Stefan's blood far more than any others.

Sorry I didn’t publish this sooner, my memory is terrible and I’m sure I’m missing awesome fics, but I’ll post more as I remember. I’m doing the list with the male slash and the femslash separately, because if I mix both, the post will be too big. So here goes some male slash fics that I love (there are very romantic ones and also the pure smut ones but they are all rated M or NC17 because that’s what I read, I like when there are no boundaries for what I can find in the next chapter, it doesn’t need to be there but I like the possibility lol)

Lapis And Bourbon, Amen [Alaric has something on his mind, but he’s not talking.] This is my favorite Romantic!Dalaric fic. Of course it’s hot, but it’s above all else a love story and a study in these two characters souls. I can never say enough about this fic, it’s beautiful. 

Routine [Enzo was getting impatient, no longer enjoying the dance and game. He was a man of action, always had been, and for the last sixty years or so he’d been locked away forced into a sedentary life unable to take what he wanted. Well, no more, tonight things would change.] I fell in love with this Denzo fic, it’s one-shot but it has so much soul and heart in this and it’s so hot, you’ll finish feeling like you’ve read five chapters

Hands [AU in which back in the fifties, Alaric, a human with a very special ring, was also imprisoned and tortured by the Augustine project. Across three cells, Damon, Enzo and Alaric become accustomed to each other. Over time it becomes more than that.] This fic is pure perfection, it has awesome plot, angst, humor, love, smut, great insight in the character’s minds, it’s everything you dream in a good fic. And it’s Dalarenzo, what else do you need?

Almost Lover [Every day Alaric thinks about leaving Mystic Falls for good, and every night he opens the door to Damon. For now, it’s enough. Dalaric] Another perfect work of the writer pleasebekidding from AO3. It’s so good, I specially love this dynamic between Damon and Alaric, angsty, hot, bittersweet.

Auld Lang Syne my ass [Choosing is boring. Damon’s never been a fan. He’s entirely keen to make sure Elena knows she doesn’t have to choose either. AU Threesome, Slash, Incest] This one is about Damon, Stefan and Elena, the writing is amazing.

Blows Me Home [It isn’t a surprise. AU, Defan, incest, bloodplay] This is very in character and Iike the style of this writer, so good.

I Will Be The One To Gaze On You (discreetly) [“Damon,” Alaric said, when he could put words to it. “I think Elijah wants to fuck you.” Damon/Alaric/Elijah] The most beautiful men in Mystic Falls + threesome, and it’s well written! We don’t need a better summary than this.

The Analogy Of The Three-Legged Stool [“I mean, it’s stable, you know. A three legged-stool works a lot better than a two-legged one.” Damon/Alaric/Elena] The most gorgeous Dalarena fic you will ever read.

Never Let Me Go [Stefan takes Damon and decides to teach him a lesson about following him and discovers something new about his brother. AU Slash Incest Stefan/Damon] This is dark and violent, so beware.

Lost Souls [Damon looked truly innocent in the moment, completely contradicting not only his own name, but his past actions and words. While in this position, I could seriously harm him if I so desired. But that’s the last thing I wanted. Damon/Stefan] I love this one-shot, even being AU it’s very in character.

Miscalculation [It was generally a good idea to be careful when hunting on unfamiliar territory, but when was Damon Salvatore ever careful? Damon Salvatore/Mason Lockwood. AU. Slash, dubious consent.] This fic is fucked up, but I love it. I think Damon has tons of chemistry with Mason and even what Mason does to him in this fic is not so cool, Damon did worse, so yeah, I’m enjoying the darkness.

Five More Minutes [A significant problem with relying on a human to satisfy your sexual needs on an ongoing basis is that they need to sleep, for hours at a time, when there are orgasms to be had.] Can a fic be hot and adorable at the same and make you love Dalaric even more? Yes! And it’s this one.

Happy Birthday Klaus [Elijiah gets his little brother a present and I’m jealous. Klaus/Stefan/Damon. Dom!Klaus - Sub!Damon - Sub!Stefan] This is really really dirty, in the good way lol. It’s hard to make me blush, but this fic did it, so don’t read it if you’re not into too graphic scenes.

Need [Damon has needs. Alaric has the capacity to fill those needs.] This fic explores BDSM (and subspace + aftercare) in a very interesting and respectful way without all the fantasy that some erotica novels seems to think it’s the real thing. Not everybody is into this theme but if you like it, then you’ll have a blast with this one.

Love Is Not Consolation [After the opening of the tomb Damon is devastated. There is only one, no, two things that can console him, but will Stefan be able to do that for him? Even though he wanted it for so long himself? D/E/S, threesome] This fic is very simple but I like a lot how Stefan worries about Damon, Defan is really cute here and he is willing to do anything to help him. They find a beautiful way to make things work.

Dominance [Damon doesn’t apologize to Elijah, instead he tells him to go to hell. Well, now Elijah has to get revenge. Slash Elijah/Damon Short, one-shot] The name say it all, Elijah dominating Damon.

Desire [Jeremy has an obsession with watching Damon. One night he watches a little more then intended, but it could work in his favor. Heavy Slash Jeremy/Damon] One shot, hot, a good dose of smut if that’s what you’re looking for and Jer is cute.

Here We Are, In The Darkest Place [Cold. Blood. Warmth. Damon/Enzo, slash] Very poetic short fic, I’m in love with Denzo, and this one explores their great potential.

Unfinished Bussiness [Damon and Enzo reunite. It’s not what either of them expect] Another Denzo awesome short fic. It’s kinda of dark and rough, just the perfect amount for this pair, since their relationship is built in love, trust and pain.

It’s Stefan’s Turn [Damon has joined the human population and Stefan intends to break his diet and take full advantage. They are both shocked when it turns into something else. Salvacest] This one is really twisted, I normally don’t like to see Damon so weak and getting overpowered by another male but this one works the concept with interesting results 

Spell Caster [After an accidental spell by a certain witch Damon and Stefan are hit by a lust spell. Struggling to remain normal what will happen when the lust becomes to much for both? Incest, Damon/Stefan] This fic is super fun and hot, nothing serious but entertaining.
