The Sasil I love yous...

Another good episode from Outsiders this week! The action happening outside of the Sasil drama is finally getting more interesting i.e. I’m now not only watching for Sasil... (70% Sasil, 30% other - anyone else uncomfortable with Wade’s seduction scene?)

We see some domestic life with Hasil and Sally-Ann where he alludes to loving her by saying if the interviewer sees her like he does then he’ll love her. I’m not sure if I’d take that to 100% mean that he was implying that he loved her but I think that’s where the writers were going. Have we ever seen/ heard Hasil declaring his love for Sally Ann? Freida told Sally Ann that Hasil loved her but that’s not the same thing as hearing it from the man himself. So I was a bit curious as to why Hasil would be all “she aint never said that to me before” and be looking sad about it. Has he said it to her before? Why did it have to come from her first? And I didn’t like that Butch was implying that Sally Ann would love Hasil for the money he’s bringing in and Hasil would in turn be motivated by this even when Sally Ann told him he could quit and she’d get the jobs as needed. THEN, we hear Sally Ann telling him she loved him. Sure it was to motivate him to win, but coming on the heels of what Butch said, I didn’t like her telling him that was under those circumstances. I guess though, that she thought he knew from her actions that she loved him. Glad they are on the same page there.

But, as with all love stories, in the interest of creating drama (after all a smooth ride is a boring one right? LOL!) there will be more issues for them on the horizon if the various promo videos are any indication (in one we see Sally Ann looking out the window at Hasil as he walks away down the street, and in the promo for next week we see a possible betrayal by Butch would could spell trouble for them if Butch no longer has people looking out for Hasil at the doors or if he chose to turn him in to the police AND there is Hasil punching a man out cold - does this guy die or get hurt bad enough to have Hasil on the run? Will any of those scenes make it in to the show itself?) they may have some issues coming up - hopefully the declaration of I love yous would still be fresh in their minds as they face them.

I kinda can’t wait to see what happens as the series wraps up season 2 - hopefully it is renewed for a third season and they don’t leave Sally Ann forever pregnant. I’m thinking something will drive them back up the mountain and next season Sally Ann swaps places with Hasil and becomes the outsider up the mountain instead of him being the outsider in town. They may then explore her and the baby in danger like when his mother gave birth to him BUT because they are Sasil everything will eventually go well and we’ll see a wonderful birthing scene. Future dramas include Farrell life versus town life. I can’t wait!

Y’all, I want an Episode of The Outsiders where, after Hasil starts making money for the house, he comes home and Sally Ann has like box braids or a quick weave or something, and then she has to explain to him that her hair didn’t magically grow over night. I really wanna see that, and I can picture him being really confused and saying something like “Why in the hell would you pay someone for hair when it already grows on your head?” “Or why are you paying to put other people’s hair on your head?” That’d be cute and funny lol

So many people in the Sasil fandom are upset that Sally-Ann is pregnant, and I totally get that, it doesn’t sit well with me either, but what I don’t get is why no one was up set over all the unprotected sex Sally-Ann and Hasil were having in season one. Like pregnancy aside Hasil is far from the cleanest guy in the world and he comes from a place where there aren’t any doctors or vaccinations. There’s even an episode (forgot which one) where Hasil says that he hasn’t been with a lot of women and Sally-Ann gives him a look that says,”Boy don’t lie”. So we know Hasil has been with a lot of women from Shay moutain. Still people were all for them having unprotected sex. A lot of  people acted as if that was the best part of their relationship. Pregnancy is a very real consequence of unprotected sex I’m not saying I’m happy about it but that’s life and people don’t become pregnant only when the time is right, if that were true the earth would be a lot less populated than it is now. I like the show, but I also have a lot of issues with the Sasil ship and the show that I don’t have time to get into now.

I forgot about this show. 😊 I discovered it half way through the second and final season. But it gripped me right away, loved it and loved Sasil.

Why did they cancel this show? Argh!

I'd love to read your thoughts on Sasil. :) As a fellow black lady I can't even EXPRESS how great it was to see someone go so hard for Sally-Anne & make it so obvious that she was beautiful and desirable -- natural hair and all. I am not used to seeing that on my screen.

OK Another Breakdown

I’ve been thinking about writing this breakdown since this ask came into my inbox but decided to do it today after that ask about how “disappointing” it was to see a conversation between me and my friend on my blog about how Uhura is regulated to a love interest in the Star Trek movies and the accusation that I was looking at their dynamic through a white feminist lens, which I found more than a little irritating because Uhura and Spock in Star Trek isn’t like Hasil and Sally-Ann in Outsiders for instance. This is mostly going to be about season 1 because I only watched season 2 Sasil clips on YouTube, I hadn’t gotten around to watching the actual season, so I’m not as well-versed in their relationship in season 2 although I have an idea.

One of the many points that my friend initiumseries points out in the response to that anon is that Uhura isn’t even loved on in Star Trek and is in fact fighting to be loved on but that isn’t the case with Sasil. In the pilot some of the Farrells go into town for a run and when they’re getting supplies, Hasil sees Sally-Ann and he’s immediately taken with her.

It isn’t a case like Bonnie in The Vampire Diaries, where to be a love interest of someone else, she has to be a second or third choice: women have to die for her to be seen as a desirable option 

and sometimes she can’t even compete with the literal ghost of an ex-girlfriend

It is established later on in the season that Hasil has a lot of experience with women on the mountain 

but despite that, when he sees Sally-Ann, he’s instantly intrigued. And then he puts in that work. He treks down the mountain essentially everyday to see her and when Hasil brings Sally-Ann up the mountain, she complains about how long the hike is, how steep it is

so that puts his daily trips to Sally-Ann into perspective. He would obviously be more familiar with the terrain than her and make faster time, but it’s still a half-day journey I believe 

Hasil starts making decisions that go against the very nature of his clan for Sally-Ann like making money

which leads to two fingers being cut off and he still managed to whittle her present

He doesn’t know how to read or write and yet learns to spell her name 

Like he’s all about that Sally-Ann life, this beautiful, dark-skinned, kinky-haired woman

And for Sally-Ann’s part, she’s not an object for Hasil to woo and escape to and sacrifice for, she does not exist simply for Hasil, we see her at her job, even when Hasil comes to speak to her, she’s at the laundromat and we see her reaction to the townspeople watching them speak, and I mean her home life isn’t a good one, her brother is abusive, but we do see Sally-Ann outside of Hasil and Sally-Ann is a character in her own right (even though I wish they’d given her a last name -_-). 

And that isn’t to say there aren’t any issues, season 2 is really about the realities external to their romance and that interrupts their romance (but also reinforces their romance) but of course it’s not like Hasil is needed by his family and suddenly Sally-Ann is no longer important to him. Before he finds out about the pregnancy, I believe he watches her from a distance because he can’t let her go and when he finds out, there’s a struggle between his duty to his clan and his love for her but his love for her is iterated and reiterated 

And then he stands by her and stands by their family 

And I believe he goes back to the mountain to help with Farrell business but makes it a point to say that he’s returning to Sally-Ann when it’s all done because she is never not a part of his life.

Then there’s just the relationship itself. It’s just a very tender and affectionate dynamic that

So just a few reasons why I like Sasil ;)

Feeling bad for Sally Ann

Each time I watch over that scene with them in the last episode where he’s bringing home dinner, Sally Ann’s face gets me every time. She’s sitting there anxiously waiting for him to come home all the while fearing as each second passes by that he isn’t. The relief that shows when she hears his voice! She knows she’s involved with a man who’s not limited by traditional rules and expectations. He’s never had to take a maths test, or get a driver’s licence, made a living for cash, paid a bill and on and on... he’s accustomed to the freedom of the mountain, to come and go as he pleases with no one really looking for him. Would he really be satisfied living in a town with rules and regulations he doesn’t understand? And among people who don’t understand him? Deep down Sally Ann knows this and has a rational fear that he might just say “Ah forget it” and disappear in to the mountain. Yes, he said he’s open to new wonders BUT, he nearly left her at the edge of town and returned to his family, to new responsibility and a sense of belonging. I felt that Sally Ann saw a glimmer of that in his eyes and maybe it’s bloomed in to her present constant worry.

And if he did leave, what would be her alternatives? She seems to literally have no one besides Hasil. James told her not to come back, her father is dead and mother ran off (or the other way around, can’t remember), she’s not working either and how long could she work before she was forced to go home? No free clinic, no one close by that we’ve been introduced to that could be called a friend. I picture her stuck in that apartment all by herself just waiting for Hasil to drop the other shoe.

And that makes me feel badly for her.

I know he promised her he’d always find a way back but what if he gets caught up in the fall out of Lil Foster’s escape? What if he gets really hurt in a fight? What if he’s convinced by conniving G’win that if he comes back she may let Sally Ann come up there to live (highly unlikely after the Kinnah backlash) and he stays on the mountain? I don’t see the latter happening but we all know what happens when one character tells the other they will never leave them or they will always be there for them...

They betters invest in two pre-paid cell phones!

Btw - loving the baby bump coming through! How far along is she by now? Somehow it feels like time is going by quicker on the show than is being made clear.
