Salisbury Steak was invented soon after World War I: the best-seller as easy to prepare and afforded the available items. And eventually became a favourite in most American homes.
Ingredients for Salisbury Steak Recipe
For Salisbury steak:
1 pound (450g) ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1 large egg
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon olive oil (for frying)
For the gravy:
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 tablespoon cornstarch (mixed with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry)
1/2 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste
