My reading habits had gone a bit stagnant in the past couple of years so this year i made the effort to engage in reading again and wow books really are good!! who would have thought! Sharing this year's book log with the small reviews i did while reading yeah i am That kind of list lover if u feel like being nosy, (and maybe even help mi crowdsource reading recs based on my likes 👀🤲?)

The left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K. Le Guin Ursula i Need to know your thoughts on omegaver- [gunshot] THAT ASIDE yeah. mrs Le Guin you've done it again. I can see why everyone got their brain chemistry altered by this book.

The Membranes - Chi Ta-Wei another brain chemistry altering book. would love to discuss it with a gender studies major lmao

Satanic Verses - Salman Rushdie its a v atmospheric and poignant story, I know I would have loved it more if I was familiar with the rich religious/cultural background it draws from

The Masquerade Series - Seth Dickinson Crazy insane in the membrane about this series. one of the most compelling worldbuildings I've ever seen, and most importantly it features one of the most crazy wet pathetic scrunkly meow meow protagonists i've ever had the pleasure of reading about.

Middlesex - Jeffrey Eugenides i liked the writing style of this book a lot! idk how well it holds up re: intersexuality topic, but its a very engaging read.

Dead Blondes and Bad Mothers: Monstrosity, Patriarchy, and the Fear of Female Power - Jude Ellison, Sady Doyle The title says it all honestly, its a beautiful, thought provoking and engaging essay, spanning eras, pop culture phenomenons, and real life events on the topic of women and horror.

The cat who saved books - Sōsuke Natsukawa this was so cute and heartfelt, it will really make you go Ah Yes, this is Why we Love Books <333

The Locked Tomb Series - Tamsyn Muir now when people say there is a girl who is the cursed sacrifice of 2000 infants who falls in love with the sleeping embodiment of the soul of the Earth (barbie) and also another girl who is the only survivor of the aforementioned sacrifice and is. a Jesus metaphor? and also the two girls become one at some point. and every book is a different genre. and god is bisexual. and memes survived the nuclear apocalypse. I can just nod and say so true.

The Area X Trilogy - Jeff VanderMeer Rotating this series in the microwave of my mind at the speed of light it's soSO GOOD!! the movie doesn't even come close honestly u NEED to read the books. and then go touch grass and be aware of every strand in a completely new way.

The Dawn of Yangchen - F. C. Yee nice read! I was more invested in the worldbuilding crumbs than in the actual story lmao, I will forever think about the HEATED airball rivalry between the air temples and about the swt greetings / bethrotal armbands.

Inuit Stories of Being and Rebirth: Gender, Shamanism, and the Third Sex - Bernard Saladin d'Anglure starting w a disclaimer bc I feel like the topic of native colonization was ignored when it should have been way more prominent when talking about the context of where and when these testimonies were collected?? That aside it was very interesting and well put together, with first account testimonies of Inuit elders about their myths, lifestyles and beliefs.

Pachinko - Min Jin Lee i read the book after having seen the tv series (which i also rlly recommend). Very moving story about a family and its generations, from Korea under Japanese colonization to modern day America.

Her body and other parties - Carmen Maria Marchado sometimes I go about my day then I remember this book exists and stare at the wall for 30 minutes.

Dictionnaire de l'impossible - Didier Van Cauwelaert big miss. this collection of articles about "strange impossible phenomenons" sounded so quirky and interesting but i sure would have loved if the author hadnt so clearly picked a side. and also way too much church for my tastes.

He who Drowned the World - Shelley Parker Chan Im not even gonna speak about this one if you've followed me since july you know what pits of insanity and despair i'm in

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow - Gabrielle Zevin Sometimes!! the book with pretty covers put in the "famous on socials" bookstore section!! are good!! It's about being othered it's about connection it's about diaspora it's about love and friendship and most of all it's about viddy games.

Station Eleven - Emily St. John Mandel reading this post-covid and learning it was written in 2017 was A TRIP. Psychic damage at every page. still feeling very normla.

The Mask of Apollo - Mary Renault Ugh i desperately wanted to like this book because the setup is so interesting and full of potential, but the end result was just. flat. flat story flat characters the plot focusing on the wrong things at the wrong times i was so DONE when i reached the end otz.

Babel - R. F. Kuang LOVED the worldbuilding in this, the "lost in translation" system of magic is one of the most interesting things ive ever read. I think theres something about the writing in general that didn't win me over completely?? but all in all a very good

Red Ocean - Han Song This sure is a Book. That i've Read. its so profundly strange and unlike anything ive come across that i dont even know what to feel about it. i think 90% of my confusion comes from Not Getting Cultural References so if someone has a "red ocean explained" essay plz send it my way bc i couldnt find one.

Saladin x Fem!Reader x Baldwin IV Smut part 1

It was a dark chilly night in the kingdom of Jerusalem. Not that had been suprising though considering Jerusalem was practically desert but tonight you felt as if it was extra chilly night though. You had come to accompany Baldwin iv in his crusade against Saladin. You loved and admired your king but you couldn't help your attraction towards your rival king Saladin. Both kings were aware of their affection for you and felt the same

As you entered the tent you could see Baldwin IV glaring at you mixed with pity. You couldn't tell why but he looked both jealous and disturbed. Had you done something? Your thoughts were interrupted when salahuddin suddenly called your name

You could see the young king looking at salahuddin with pure hatred. Never had you seen such hatred in his eyes. Baldwin IV didn't ever seem to hate Saladin. Perhaps you were incorrect in reading him

Your thoughts were interrupted again when salahuddin called your name

"Listen (Y/N) both me and the king know that we loved each" Saladin said with low voice. Anger almost visible in his voice, keyword almost. You noticed looking down playing with sand

"We also noticed that you also love us" Baldwin IV after hearing this clenched his fist with sand inside it.

"Look at me" Saladin commanded. Hearing this you got scared at looked at salahuddin

"Ever since you have come you keep staring at him"

Baldwin IV smirked at Saladin with eyes full of hatred and said "Perhaps because she loves me instead and she is confusing her admiration for you for love" Saladin looked ready to pounce at him but restraint at last moment and said "As much as it hurts for me to say this to you and we both know that this isn't true" "This why we came to agreement"

You looked at Saladin confused while Baldwin IV simply glared at him and said "Your plan is absurd, there is no way we are agreeing to this" Saladin offended replied "You know that this will be only way we will know for sure who she loves more, we are running out of time"

"What are you talking about" you asked confused. Baldwin IV continued giving you same expression while Saladin with controlled anger said "That since we both love you and have done everything to win your love we have thought of different solution to get your love, that is we have decided that we will see who pleases you more in bed based on that we can put an end to this love triangle"

You done beet red hearing while Baldwin iv exclaimed "This is ridiculous, I will never agree to this. Nor will (Y/N)"

"As much it hurts me as well this is the only way"

Saladin looked at you as said "Crawl towards me like a cat".

You gulped and did what he said, Baldwin iv noticing you submitting to his request and almost reaching him, grabbed your other hand and tried bringing him to you by your wrist. Saladin not backing down without a fight. Grabbed your other wrist. You gulped looking at both men noticing each of them giving you intense look. This is going to be a tough decision. You surely didn't want to lose either of them.

Best spider man comic?

oh!! I'm going to stick to self-contained comics that you can just hop right into

i loooove the amazing spider-man annual #1 (2018) by saladin ahmed. the take on peter & venom's relationship (told through venom's pov) is really really good

peter parker: the spectacular spider-man #310 (2017) by chip zdarsky has been recommended a lot and for good reason!! strong emphasis on peter's relationship with average new yorkers (and vice versa). will make you feel feelings

spine-tingling spider-man #1-8 (2021-22) also by saladin ahmed is a great little self-contained story for spooky season!!! it's a marvel unlimited exclusive rn but physical copies are set to come out soon and a sequel is in the works!!! i love juan ferreyra's traditional art so much too

deadpool annual #2 (2014) by christopher hastings. ok I'm cheating because it's a deadpool story BUT it deals with peter's anxiety and spidey senses going rampantly out of control because he's 1) convinced random new yorkers are chameleon and therefore are out to get him and 2) he has not gotten any sleep because of this. deadpool as the voice of reason is pretty fun. it's just a lighthearted little one-off plot (bros keep bros secret identities safe)

mary jane & black cat: beyond #1 (2022) by jed mackay is also another cheat but you should read it anyway (don't let the bad cover dissuade you). peter is unconscious in the hospital and attracting unwanted attention because he's suspiciously got both mj and black cat looking after him, and their resulting team up dynamic is really fun! mackay's standalone black cat stuff is pretty great too

are these, like, the best spider-man's 60+ yr run has to offer? probably not! but they're fun little stories if you're dipping your toes into the comics

you know it all started in destiny 1 with whole "we are guardians and we fight evil aliens and we are alone in this world" and with story progrsion it got to everyone teaming up and becoming friends to fight some super bad guy with a vape for a head. we have great family roles like: unwilling therapist, emo teen, badass huge woman, wizard (various flavours), grandpa with dementia, boy scouts leader, con man, thembo gaslight girlboss or various dilfs. a lot of canon queerness included as a bonus!

Their love for each other literally saved the universe by teaching the enemy what love truly is, they fought tooth and nail to get back to each other through time and space, they call each other family in canon, and they love each other so much!!!

Tatag-9 Headcanon Shenanigans

Long overdue but have to give some love to my grumpy and stoic Exo Titan. Some of these facts, or headcanons or whatnot are already established in a server I'm in but I'm willing to reiterate it here and add some new ones as well!

Handicraft stuff:

He has a secret hobby involving fabrics-based handicraft. Sewing, knitting, crocheting, you name it. He's involved in that. His apartment has a small room with his creations.

He learned how to do these under Zavala's tutelage. I'd like to imagine that Zavala had like a secret handicraft club (though mostly for knitting) that some Guardians had gotten into. He's one of them.

For his few trusted friends... he makes them a special gift. He actually tries to create a plushie version of themselves and their Ghosts! Always put in a nice yet simple gift box, giving it to them personally or leaving it at their front door to collect. It's one such way of showing his appreciation and affection for them.

Just expect him to make tapestries and rugs and snug sweaters. He may sell them for glimmer if he wanted to but he prefers to keep his hobby away from the whole making it a job thing.

One of his proudest works was making a whole tapestry regarding the Iron Lords that he decided to gift to one of (the two of) its surviving original members, Lord Saladin. Being an Iron Lord fanboy meant that he definitely spent some time creating this intricately beautiful piece of fabric over the months. He gave it the one time Saladin visited the Tower after his duties in Caiatl's War Council, whenever he would celebrate and host the Iron Banner. Gave it quickly, nodded, and left walking in a hasty fashion. Clearly bashful for doing something like that.

Quirks and Traits:

Undeniably patient and has a temper that is good for his stoic self. He doesn't get easily angry or upset... Unless you keep pestering him and be a constant annoyance around him (see: Shard-3, my Exo Hunter). He's slow to anger however.

Big dad energy (especially Filipino dads). Expect those silly things you hear and see from the Internet regarding how dads interact.

Given his Exo frame, he has a resting grump face... which had influenced his grumpiness a little. That gets people away from him, and that's okay by him.

Where Max is a cat owner and Shard's a dog person, Tatag would be someone into reptiles and birds. He'd probably be beside Saint and quietly feeding the pigeons with the legendary Titan together. He has a terrarium just for this pair of bearded dragons in his apartment.

Big home cook, but only shares his food to those he invites, or visits. Filipinos have this thing of making lots of food for people to feast or chow on, or sending out food to people when they're about to leave. You can say that Tatag would send out the tupperware or containers to send what delicious food he makes. He makes some mean lumpia (the Shanghai variant especially) and pork sinigang.

VERY FESTIVE FOR THE DAWNING. He'll be inviting his trusted friends and companions to a feast he makes for them. And there's a very rare moment he'd show what joy he has for them during that.

He would pat someone's shoulder or back as a way to compliment when in battle before moving onwards. Be it friend or just a mere ally. It's a common pattern he does to show his appreciation for them.

Affections and Love:

Tatag seems outwardly cold or unassuming, but inwardly he's a sweetheart. Of course he won't just show it to anyone except to those he trusts and has befriended with.

He's reserved and won't show off such affection (both platonic or romantic) to the public, but he's not fully adverse to PDA. He only gives it in private, or in the company of those he trusts wholeheartedly. And provided his quietness or dislike with being social, he's not going to be vocally affectionate. He prefers to show it off in an emotional level, and even physical sometimes.

In terms of romantic relationships, he is not one to form one nor one to approach others. He prefers to be the one that is pursued, to be wooed over or to show that they got what it takes to make him fall in love with them.

Furthermore, he needs to be emotionally connected with them in order to even pursue something like a romance (hint: he's demi both ways). Invest time with him and get to know him better then there will be that spark within him that realizes that he has fallen in love with them.

He's a monogamous guy, and cannot get into any other relationship at all except the one he's in.

He's very intimate and very affectionate to his partner. Expect sweet gestures, devotion of time, and lots of touching from him.

Touching, he loves touching. He loves physical closeness. He gives hugs and kisses no matter what and would tenderly embrace his lover whenever.

Bilingualism is working wonders for his lover, as he'll speak to them in both English and Filipino about how much he loves them. Providing translations even just to bridge that language gap.

If anything, his top three love languages are: Physical Touch, Quality Time, and Words of Affirmation. Acts of Service exists too but those three are the ones he likes most.

Being a father to an Eliksni child, and his canon OC x OC relationship:

Canonically, Tatag is a father! An adoptive father to his adopted Eliksni son, Alon (meaning ocean or sea wave in Filipino). The hatchling he adopted was found and cared for and nurtured over just after the events of the Endless Night, when House Light and the Vanguard have now become allies. He doesn't have the most time with his kid given his business as a Guardian and so he leaves him to the care of his (canon) life partner, Martin (he/they), a civilian Titan Guardian that owns a restaurant that serves comfort food in the City.

Tatag and Martin met one time during when the latter visited the Tower for some errands he needed to do. He was smitten at first sight and decided to form a friendship with the Exo. It was a slow slow burn, but eventually they became partners.

Marriage was still inconceivable since it will take time for Tatag to consider it, but he has devoted his time to Martin for life (and vice-versa). With the Light or without it.

Strongest love language between them is quality time. To enjoy each other's presence and do things together makes them happy together.

Even with Tatag's physical unavailability to take care of Alon, he makes time to call them whenever he's out and about around the system.

The name Alon came to mind for Tatag because of his reminiscing of the sea. He has a small yet strange affinity for the sea, for the beach, for the water. Maybe something about his past called to him regarding it, even beyond all the reboots. Hence he named his kid for this affinity for the sea, over the crashing waves.

Though he would also give the kid an Eliksni name, Valrask.

The only allowable OC x Canon relationship for him:

If we talk however on an OC x Canon level, he would find his life partner in Misraaks (which is an AU's canon that I will indulge on because who doesn't love Misraaks?). Two fathers to two adopted Eliksni children. Eido would have a baby brother because of that, and I think that would be very cute. For Misraaks and Tatag. And for Eido and Alon.

Tatag would immerse himself into Eliksni culture alongside the Kell, integrating himself into the Eliksni Quarter and learn everything about them more.

Like with Martin, marriage was still out of the picture. And likewise with Martin, he dedicates himself to Misraaks completely.

Strongly into physical touch together, there would be lots of physical intimacy between them. Given the fact in their size difference. This would be the only time the Exo's little spooning himself for the Eliksni.

Ywa Wasn't Invited - Destiny AU

The Tower hanger was one of the least professional places in the Vanguard’s “temporary” headquarters. The regulations were largely ignored so it had become a sort of spillover lounge for dying clubs and alien guests and the occasional ill-advised sporting contest. Not the sort of thing that one would expect in a place meant for repairing the means to interstellar travel. The only real rule that Guardians respected was first come, first serve and unless there was a reason to be in the City, there were always a few empty hangars for individual repairs or customization.

Ty’s ship was long overdue for a tune up. He didn’t think “functioning” should be the bear minimum but sometimes it was easy to forget that routine maintenance was a must, especially when he kept snoozing the reminder and ignoring the check engine light.

He was still in his armor from the waist down, mark set reverently aside, with only a tank top up top and a pair of heavy-duty work gloves to keep the oil off his hands. Dienekes was providing direction and diagnostics as Ty took a wrench to the inner workings of his ship, and from the outside probably looked ridiculous with just his legs dangling from the barely Titan sized hatch that he had crammed himself into.

Hunched as he was, it didn’t take much for him to smash his head into the ceramic interior when a seething voice hissed in his ear, “Would you prefer to be crushed in your own singularity or shall I just light you on fire instead?”

He banged his head and fell out of the ship. To his credit, Ty landed on his stumbly feet and kept a grip on the wrench in his hand while the other one nursed the forming bruise.

Ywa laughed.

The Warlock changed a lot and stayed the same over the hundred years that Ty had known her. Her look varied frequently, oft times a custom work of her own design flaunting some new power that she had puzzled out of the fabric of the universe, but her mischief, penchant for trouble, and a couple signature ticks kept Ywa recognizable to most anyone that was anyone. She was the oldest Guardian that anyone knew aside from perhaps Lord Saladin, had an obsession with cats and their curiosity, and loved the color red. Not for any reason, she just liked the color.

She also had an affection for Ty that he wasn’t sure he liked or not. In his early days as a Guardian, having a powerful Warlock as a friend was a delight, but the longer she spent happily cooped up behind city walls the more she leaned on him for odd favors. It was her unpredictability that made Ty decline her request to join the six-man fireteam to Europa, and looking at her now, he was extra sure that decision had been the right one.

She was glaring at him with her arms crossed against her chest as she floated in the air above him, upside down. Void energy lashed behind her like a tail, flicking in a display of mastery and irritation. While her long Warlock robes and glasses defied gravity, Ywa’s hair did not and reached for the ground. Ty assumed that was a personal decision to contribute to a more deranged and angry expression.

Briefly he considered throwing the wrench at her and making a run for it but he’d never make it.

Dienekes zoomed out of the hatch on the ship, looked between them, and zoomed back in. At least one of them was safe.

“Ywa-“

“Zavala TOLD me that it was YOUR call,” she grumbled.

“I wasn’t bringing three Warlocks.”

She seemed puzzled and the tail stilled. Ywa slowly walked in a circle with her head as a pivot point until she was upright once more and standing like a normal person a foot or so above the hangar floor. She was keeping herself exactly an inch taller than Ty, he realized after a moment.

Ywa stomped her foot, and it still made the sound of a boot on a steel floor despite the lack of physical contact. “WHICH Warlock was more qualified than I was?”

Ty scratched the back of his head with the wrench and, realizing he wasn’t in immediate danger, got back to work while they talked. “Opposite. A Kinderguardian named Evie.”

“Evie Kiku?”

He flashed her a confused look between reading numbers on the wing. “Yeah… do you know her?”

Ywa grinned and danced in place for exactly five tip-toe steps. “I’m the one who rejected her thesis.”

“Mean,” Ty grumbled half-heartedly and pulled on a couple levers to remove another hatch so he could check the inside of one of the wings.

The Warlock waved a hand dismissively and jumped into a cross-legged position without changing her height. “Not enough practical experience. The Praxic Order shouldn’t’ve let her write one without hands-on experimentation.”

“So, it’s a good thing she went with us then?”

Ywa frowned and then mumbled, “touché. …you should’ve left one of your boys.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Inseparable, hm?” she teased.

“Yep.”

“Then that wasn’t their names on that list of fireteams in the field right now? With a Warlock?”

Ty’s shoulders visibly slumped, and Ywa’s tail swished back and forth like a Golden Age clock. He didn’t answer and instead clambered into the wing enough to reach a cable that was in good condition but perhaps a little old. He ripped it out and tossed it at her. The debris went through her tail, dissolving it like smoke for a few seconds before it reformed and resumed its hypnotic gliding.

“Sore subject?” she prodded.

“I’m glad they’re branching out,” he said after a moment. Ty rolled his wrist and Dienekes materialized, quietly providing a replacement cable.

“You don’t sound convinced.”

“If you want gossip, you old hag, go chatter to the order about Kai.”

She tucked both her hands under her chin. “Oh? What about him?”

Ty put the part up into the ship and climbed after it. “He’s on a mission right now.” His voice echoed a little.

“Yawn.”

“With someone.”

“Listening.”

“Evie,” Ty grunted as he fell out of the ship again. He put the panel back in place.

“…against his will, yeah?”

“She’s not holding him at gunpoint if that’s what you’re asking.” Ty pulled a dirty rag out of his back pocket and wiped his face, smearing more oil across his forehead than he was able to remove.

“He asked?”

“He didn’t say no when she invited herself.”

“That’s not the same,” Ywa huffed, disappointed, but she caught herself after rolling the thought around. A little gust of wind puffed around her, and she smiled as pieces lined up. “It’s not nothing. I read your report from Europa and Neomuna, it seemed boring and routine.” Ty shrugged and Ywa narrowed her eyes. “Oh Ty. Ty Ty Ty, my favorite Sunbreaker, you wouldn’t have kept important PERSONAL details from the OFFICIAL report, would you? I would love to hear more about it over dinner.”

“Pass.”

She unfolded her legs and glided in close, giving herself another inch of height as she looped a finger around the chain for his dog tags to keep him from escaping. “So about lighting you on fire.”

“What time?” he sighed. Ty’s expression was caught in the intersection between deadpan and ‘ah yes, the usual shit’ annoyed.

“I’ll send for you at eight.”

“Can’t wait.”

Now I’m wondering if this person thought they were free to come into my inbox and say what they said because of the instagram post I did.

The only reason i used the helia pic i did was because you can’t see the dude’s face. There was another one where you could see his face but I couldn’t tell if he was white and I preferred the one where the flower blocked his face. (Other than eyes thats covered by dark makeup) It also fit my hc that he prefers to avoid pictures of himself online because of his status as Saladin’s grandson and it worked out for me.

I could have used Ethan Torchio pics (ive even said his aesthetic is sooo Helia) but I didn’t and I won’t.

The Flora pic i used the girl didn’t have green eyes yes. But that was literally because i was looking for a pic of a girl with a cat in that very specific pose because I had this cute hc that Flora sends cute pics like that to bribe Helia to come home faster. And that was one of the few i could find with a girl with a darker skintone.

I was soooo bloody happy when i found the festival pic because its sooooo Winx!

But the amount of digging I did to find these and the amount of digging im doing to do one for Helia…

I won’t have this problem if I was looking for Stella or Bloom or Sky or Brandon.

And if you’re going to bring up miele…ya she has red hair and she has light skin in canon but there are latinas with red hair and light skin. Again. A google search.

I'm currently not accepting any romantic, fwb, or nsfw RP. I'm also not accepting extreme gore or horror (a little is okay, as Destiny already has these themes [re: Clovis Bray]).

I'm currently not accepting any fantasy AUs (eg DnDestiny) or crossovers besides Halo*. If Halo, I would prefer the main events to take place in the Destiny timeline. For example, Duane-B312 is my version of Noble Six, but his story starts during The Dark Below.

*I can accept crossover characters but not the setting itself. So no gallivanting across Coruscant, Vulcan, or the Citadel, sorry. I might allow a trip in the TARDIS if you're particularly convincing.

Avraam and Bai are [mostly] canon-compliant; RZ-3 is not. I don't have any expectations for canon compliance/divergence but I know it can bother some people.
