Rhode Island Lighthouses and a Surprise in Massachusetts
This was originally posted on my other blog Big Toe In The Wind on February 4, 2019, which was just before I started this blog.
I saw some lighthouses this weekend! I was in Rhode Island for a wedding and decided to revisit some lighthouses that I’d seen before to get better pics.
This is Borden Flats Lighthouse in Falls River, Massachusetts. A cute little puppy jumped on my leg here. I just happened to see it while driving over a bridge this time but I’m pretty sure I went the same way last time and totally missed it. I was working from a list of Rhode Island lighthouses and didn’t think about having to drive through MA to see more in RI.
This is Castle Hill Lighthouse in Newport, RI. Last time I went here it had snowed and I was afraid to approach this cliff knowing that it would be slippery.
This is Newport Harbor Lighthouse also known as Goat Harbor Lighthouse in Newport, RI. I didn’t get close to the lighthouse last time but made sure to this time.
They also had a goat there on Goat Island. lol
This is Rose Island Lighthouse in Newport, RI. I wasn’t necessarily planning on seeing this one because it was so far away from King Park where I saw it last time. This view was from Goat Island and I had left the telephoto lens in the car.
One day I’m going to go back and take one of the many lighthouse cruises to see it close up. There are so many that you either have to do the lighthouse cruise or take a ferry to see close.
This is Ida Lewis Yacht Club formerly known as Ida Lewis Lighthouse or Lime Rock Lighthouse in Newport, RI. I have been by here twice and still haven’t seen the actual light. Of course, it’s private property and the pier next to this one at King Park (where you can have the best view from land without being there) has a “No Trespassing” sign and some type supplies on it.
This is Plum Beach Lighthouse in Jamestown, RI. I took this pic completely not looking with my phone. I, of course, had to rotate and crop it so it looked like something. I’m pleased.
These are Dutch Island Lighthouse in Jamestown, Rhode Island, and Sakonnet Lighthouse in Middletown, Rhode Island. I went back to these because I brought my telephoto lens.
This is Pomham Rocks Lighthouse in Riverside, Rhode Island.
I got a great pic of the sun about to set here as well.
I finished up here at around 5 and my flight was at 7:30. So I took the chance to go to Iggy’s which was recommended by an Uber driver.
Added later: Looking at this map of my location history, I can see why I missed that lighthouse in Massachusetts last time. Last time I went to Bristol Ferry Lighthouse which completely bypassed Falls River.

Evelyn’s Drive- In, Tiverton RI.
Evelyn’s Drive In has been a staple in Tiverton since 1969. They are famous for their local and fresh seafood. Located right on Nanaquaket Pond, it is the perfect place to pull up your boat and have some homemade, fresh seafood! If you don’t have a boat don’t worry they have a parking lot and you can still enjoy the pond with their abundant outdoor seating area!
Tiverton is a small town in RI boarding Fall River Ma. Tiverton might be a small town but there are many things to do. They have two beaches located on the Sakonnet River. I have been to both beaches and they are beautiful and not too crowded. The Four Corners Historical District is a perfect area to go shopping around. They have an antique shop, coffee shop and a general store. I have been into the shops there and everyone is very friendly. If you like to go hiking please go to Fort Barton. It is a great place to go hiking no matter what time of year. You will hike through rivers and little brooks. You can climb to the top of the fort and see a beautiful view of the Tiverton Harbor. If you are in the area I highly recommend venturing into Tiverton and seeing its beauty!
Evelyn’s Drive-In lobster roll was delicious. Plus I got to sit outside and enjoy my lobster roll while watching all of the boats go by. I got my lobster meat on the roll with butter on the side. I love getting lobster rolls this way, when offered, because you can truly taste the lobster. The bun was nice and crispy. The lobster tasted very fresh. When I dipped it in the butter it was nice and sweet. The butter added a little sweetness. I really enjoyed my experiences Evelyn’s Drive-In and I can’t wait to go back and try more seafood!
Based on presentation and taste of the Evelyn’s Drive-In lobster roll I would rate this roll a 8 out of 10.

Route Review: Rail Explorers Rhode Island Division
Sharing track with the Newport and Narragansett Bay Railroad, Rail Explorers Rhode Island Division runs two separate routes from their Portsmouth Grove station near the historic, seaside city of Newport, Rhode Island. Both rides run along bays on northern Aquindeck Island and offer their own, unique experiences. I pedalled both of these routes in July of 2017, so some of the details might have changed since then. The 2019 season launched on May 11 and is running five to seven days per week.
The Routes
The Northern Ramble is a 6-mile (9.7 km) one-way ride through varying scenery and terrain, from trestles over New England bogs to coastal forest canopy along the Narragansett and Mount Hope bays. At one point, it feels as if the rails are being engulfed by a golf course, at the next riders pedal under the majesty of the Mount Hope Bridge. I pedalled this route in both directions to enjoy the scenery from each perspective and highly recommend this to anyone up for 12 miles (19.3 kms) of railbiking.
The Southern Circuit is a six-mile (9.7 km) round-trip along the Weaver Cove and East Passage of the Narraganset Bay. The picnic area at the Bayside Station turning point is ideal for special event tours, such as the Fireside Friday, Sunday Brunch with mimosas, and enjoying the sunset over the bay.
Rail Explorers Rhode Island Division runs on track used by the Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad Co., which has been running excursion and dinner trains since 2014. Former heritage railroads along the route included the Newport Dinner Train founded in 1997 and the Old Colony and Newport Scenic Railway founded in 1979. The line originally ran from Fall River, Massachusetts, ending scheduled passenger service as early as 1938 and freight service before 1973. A barge collided with the Sakonnet River rail bridge in 1988, resulting in the removal of the bridge in 2006, which then isolated the remaining section on Aquindeck Island from the national network.
Coincidentally, our AirBnB host told us that he was a member of a coalition dedicated to the conversion of the line to a rails-to-trails mixed-use path. I haven’t been able to find much evidence of such a coalition online, although there is a proposed plan from 2016 supporting this idea. However, per Rail Explorers founders Mary Joy Lu and Alex Catchpoole, the Rhode DOT has dominion over the use of the line and have given multi-year track use commitments to Rail Explorers and the Newport and Narragansett Bay Railroad.
This blogger fully supports rails-to-trail projects on disused railroads.
The Vehicles
The railbikes are the same steel frame and wheel models described in posts about the Rail Explorers Catskill Mountain and Las Vegas divisions shown here in Las Vegas in the Rail Explorers Instagram feed.

Travel Notes
When the ferries are running in the summer, there are many alternative routes for reaching Newport. On the outward journey, we took Amtrak from Penn Station to Providence where we transferred to the ferry to Newport. We returned by taking the morning ferry to Block Island, after touring the island taking the ferry to New London, CT, and then returning to NY by Amtrak.
Other potential routes include a combination of Long Island Rail Road to Greenport and ferry to Block Island or New London, Long Island Rail Road to Montauk and ferry to Block Island or New London, or the ferry from Jamestown.
Any of these journeys includes lighthouses, oysters, and arrival at the ferry terminal in Newport, where bicycle rentals can be found steps away at Hooley. The ride to Rail Explorer’s starting point is an easy 8.5 miles (13.7 kms) away.
Last note: Newport is a tourist town and full of top-notch dining options, so many restaurants fill up on summer weekends. Reservations are strongly recommended.

July 7 - Bristol to Cuttyhunk. Took a different route to Cuttyhunk by transiting the Sakonnet River. Two bridges today. The Mt Hope bridge had plenty of clearance. The Sakonnet River bridge is reported to be 65. No height boards, but we went under at low tide so height was not an issue. A bit of a roll on the water, but a bit of sail helped stabilize us. We arrived in Cuttyhunk around 1. It was surprising to see so many open moorings! We haven’t had that good luck in a couple of years. Cuttyhunk is still Cuttyhunk. A major waterline replacement project is underway on the island. The few roads that are on Cuttyhunk were all messed up due to construction. I am told that next season all the roads will be repaved. A long time coming, notwithstanding the construction. Tomorrow we are Vineyard Haven bound.

The Glittering Gem that is Little Compton…
The Glittering Gem that is Little Compton…
Just to the south of Little Compton, RI is the Atlantic Ocean and to the west the Sakonnet River. A place by the sea. Predominantly a small rural-farming community with an impressive ocean view. A pristine blend of rolling hills, rambling stone walls and ocean specific trees. Acres of farmland interrupted only by exquisite naturally shingled homes perfectly salt air weathered. An impromptu visit…
