Chapter Thirteen: Separation Can Be Scary

Warnings: mostly fluff, a bit of jealous hugh whoopsies

Late September 2024,

For a while, Hugh had been wanting to spend time with Maya in his home country, show her all the places he loved and take her to the beach. Although she much preferred the cold, snow, and mountains, she wanted that too. She had been to Australia once, for his show, but it was a short trip and he was only able to see her a few times.

With a break in both their schedules, they were able to plan a trip to Sydney. Sakari had to come because Maya barely went anywhere without her little sister. Hugh didn’t mind. That was his little sister too.

Hugh, being the beach goer that he was, wanted to go there as soon as they settled. He left no room for argument and shoved Maya and Sakari into the car once they got their bathing suits on. Sakari, of course, complained the whole way there about the heat.

“I really, truly am a Northern Native at heart because what the fuck?” Sakari groaned as soon as she exited the car. “The sun is so damn bright.” She immediately put on her snow goggles which were perfect for blocking out the sun no matter where she went. The small slit in them offered her enough visibility to still see.

Hugh slipped an arm around Maya’s shoulder, bringing her close as he laughed at Sakari’s complaint. “I think the sun is generally pretty bright.”

“Kiss my ass, Jackman.” She adjusted the strap of the umbrella she was carrying over her shoulder.

As they stepped onto the sandy shores to set their things up, a small crowd was already gathering to watch Hugh in his natural habitat. Pictures have been taken ever since they stepped off the plane, questions yelled over one another, however these people seemed to go about their business, observing them in silence.

Hugh screwed the umbrella into the sand while Maya unfolded a few chairs. Despite her displeasure, Sakari ran for the ocean. The water felt nice against her heated skin.

He glanced back at her, taking in her carefree nature before he focused on Maya. “You gonna come into the water with us, love?”

She settled in a chair underneath the shade of the umbrella and crossed her legs. “I don't know, I think I'll sit out for a bit. Read my book.” She gestured with the novel in her hands.

Hugh pursed his lips and nodded at her. Maya was too stunning not to go into the water but he wouldn't push. He wanted to see her body slick with water, droplets running down her skin and dipping between her breasts until they disappeared underneath her top. She wore a crimson bathing suit, the top had a small buckle in the front while the bottoms had some on the hip. He realized he hadn't seen her wear that color much and found that he liked it. It suited her well. Although blue was still very much her color.

Maya continued, “I'll be out in a bit. Promise.” She smiled softly and then extended her legs a little so her toes were in the sand.

Hugh hummed in response, leaning down to press a kiss to the top of her head before he turned to join Sakari in the water.

Waist deep in the blue expanses, she began to splash at him. Which resulted in him fighting back with splashes of his own. And then he picked her up when he had enough.

“Woah, what are you—” Sakari was thrown back into the ocean. Hugh laughed, a full-on giggle really. When she resurfaced, she playfully frowned. “That's not funny! I could've drowned!”

Hugh shrugged with a sly smile. “But you didn't.”

Sakari jumped on his back, trying to pull him into the water. “C'mon!” To no avail. “You suck.”

“Maybe you're just bad at this.” Hugh adjusted her slightly so she sat higher on his back. She wrapped her arms and legs around him.

As he looked back at Maya, he noticed she was talking to someone. Not just anyone. A man. She looked up at him with a smile, nodding along to whatever he was saying and offered him a few responses. He stared at the man's back, eyes narrowing.

“Oh, jealous, Hughie?” Sakari teased, squeezing his shoulder.

The man left so Maya resumed her book. “No. Shut up.” Hugh dropped Sakari back in the water as he left her to walk back to Maya.

“So rude.” Sakari sighed dramatically.

Hugh nearly immediately sat on Maya's lap once he returned to her. She opened her arms, set her book in her bag, and placed a hand on his back while another settled on his thigh. He draped an arm around her neck, caressing her shoulder with his thumb.

“Hey.” She said warmly.

He nearly forgot why he came here, if he had a reason to begin with. “Hey.” He whispered as he kissed the side of her head.

“Something wrong?” Maya asked, tilting her head to the side. Her hand rubbed absentmindedly at his spine.

If there was something Hugh particularly loved about Maya, it was the way she could pick up the slightest thing wrong with his mood by a single look. It made him open up more and that was a very liberating thing. He didn't have to hide with her.

Hugh placed his free hand on top of Maya's on his thigh, feeling her soft skin which was slightly heated under the Australian sun. “Who were you talking to?” He felt like a child when he said it, voice low and timid. His gaze shifted downward, focusing on the necklace around her throat.

“A fan.” Maya answered, ducking her head to try and meet his eyes. Her eyes didn't show any signs of amusement or some secret enjoyment but they were sincere.

She always took Hugh’s insecurities seriously even if the concept of him being jealous over some random man was laughable. She wouldn't ever fall in love with someone she barely knew and forget about him but, unfortunately, the thought was still there in the back of his mind. The thought that he was too old for her. The thought that he wasn't enough.

She was able to soothe those thoughts with a gentle touch that showed she cared, a meal he loved cooked to perfection, a coffee that was prepared in the morning for him, a sticky note or two that he found around the penthouse that had a message of love written in Maya's beautiful handwriting—she knew she couldn't just tell him not to think that way, that's not how the mind worked. Instead, she reassured him in these simple, almost throwaway actions that she put a lot of tender care in.

“What did you talk about?” Hugh felt a little lighter knowing it was just a fan. Somehow, it felt scarier if it was some genuine stranger trying to flirt with Maya.

“About Deadpool. He said he loved my scenes and confessed he hadn't seen a lot of my movies and asked for recommendations.” She chuckled softly.

A light smile spread on his face. “And what did you recommend?” Hugh teased.

“Well, The Legend of Korra for one even if I'm not in it for that long, Te Ata, and The Florida Project.” She took his hand in hers and squeezed it lightly.

“That reminds me, I still haven't watched The Legend of Korra.” Hugh hummed. He's heard her voice lines many times, but never heard them in context.

Maya's lips morphed into a lop-sided smile. “I thought Oscar would've forced you to sit down and watch it years ago.”

“Bold of you to assume he hadn't tried to keep you all to himself.” Hugh teased, poking at her shoulder.

Maya chuckled and shook her head at him. She leaned closer to press a few kisses to the side of his head. Any kiss they shared, whether it be on his lips or anywhere else, was bound to fill his chest with butterflies. He was so hopelessly in love that Sakari took every opportunity to tease him for it.

“Oh, c'mon you two, stop snoggin’ around!” Sakari yelled, doing a terrible Australian accent to top it off.

Hugh and Maya burst into laughter. “We probably should join Sakari before she gets caught in the riptide.” She nudged his shoulder with a light twinkle in her eyes.

He sighed dramatically and relented, sliding off her lap to stand. He pulled her with him and they walked hand-in-hand to meet Sakari in the ocean.

“Ah, my two favorite cunts.” Sakari smirked, still doing that horribly exaggerated Australian accent.

Maya stared at her. “You can stop that now.”

“But I sound just like Hugh! Nearly imperceptible.” Sakari giggled.

“Sounds pretty similar to me.” Hugh added, slinging an arm around Sakari's shoulder.

They began to splash each other and Hugh couldn't help but stare at the way Maya’s hair dampened and dripped, making the strands impossibly darker and causing even more droplets to run down her skin. It was better than he could have ever imagined.

He cupped her cheeks and pulled her into a kiss. She made a surprised noise, setting her hands on his waist. He could taste the salt of the ocean on her lips and found that he craved it.

Maya pulled away slightly, breath hot against his lips. “Couldn't help yourself, huh?”

“When it's you? Never.” Hugh whispered. His thumb traced the triangular tattoo on her cheek. He leaned close to press a kiss at the dot at the point of the tattoo.

More pictures were taken that day. Which, in part, was a good thing because none of them took pictures but they wanted to remember that day.

Pictures of Hugh carrying around Sakari. They all actively ignored the caption: Hugh Jackman and Maya Imik’s sister getting cozy? Pictures of Hugh on Maya's lap. He particularly liked those. Pictures of the kisses they shared in the ocean. Oh, those might get framed.

Over the next few days at the beach, enjoying the sun, Maya and Sakari developed tan lines around their eyes due to their snow goggles. They haven't had those since they were kids. It felt strangely nostalgic even though they were very much not surrounded by snow.

Hugh thought that it made Maya look charming. He would kiss the edge of the tan line as he ran a hand through her hair. It was an intimate thing but he learned it was especially intimate for her because of how her culture treated hair as an extension of the spirit. It made him so happy to be included in the small group that she didn't mind touching her hair.

Since they were in Australia, Hugh made it imperative that they see his children. It's been a while and he wanted to hold them tight until they couldn't breathe again. So he invited Ava, Oscar, and Oscar's girlfriend, Jenna, over for dinner.

Ava hugged Maya tightly and smiled up at her. “God, you're still really pretty.” She said sincerely.

“And you've become a beautiful young woman.” Maya smiled back, pulling her closer with an arm around her shoulder.

“Mm, I can see why my Dad likes you so much,” Ava hummed, nuzzling slightly against her chest. “You're very comfortable.”

Hugh chuckled, “Alright. That's enough of that,” He pulled Ava away from Maya to hug his daughter. “Don't you miss your father?” He teased, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

“It's not every day I get to see Maya.” Ava pouted softly but it wasn't serious. She pressed a kiss to her father's cheek. “Missed you.”

“Missed you too, bug.” He hummed, rubbing her back lightly.

Oscar came a few minutes later with Jenna and they greeted them both as well. Hugh held the younger man tight, letting a warm feeling wash over him. He loved Oscar and Ava so deeply but there was a special place in his heart for his first child. He was becoming a man and Hugh was so proud.

As they ate dinner, they shared some stories with Jenna. Particularly about his eighteenth birthday and how he pined after Maya for the whole day.

“He was following her around like a sick puppy. It was kinda cute.” Ava laughed softly. She loved making fun of her brother. It was her duty as his younger sister.

“I can imagine.” Jenna's eyes shifted over to Oscar who was trying to ignore the conversation. “I think it would have been adorable to see.”

Oscar flushed a little. “Really?” He narrowed his eyes before a smirk appeared on his lips. “Hm.”

Hugh snickered and shook his head. Oscar was a bit like Hugh, always throwing himself fully into a relationship. He devoted himself to a person. At first, that person was Maya, but as time went on and she very explicitly kept saying she wasn't interested, Oscar moved on. And found Jenna. And she adored him just as much.

“Wish I was there so I could've taken pictures.” Sakari sighed, shaking her head. “Would've been funny.”

Ava shrugged, “I'm sure Dad or Mum have some somewhere.” She said.

The room fell silent after that. Ava pursed her lips, realizing she probably shouldn't have mentioned Deborra. She was missing from this little family reunion.

Hugh wiped his mouth with his napkin. “It's alright to talk about Mum, y'know? She raised you guys. And-And I still love her, it's just different now.” He said softly, searching for the right words to say. He looked at Maya for some guidance.

He genuinely had no problems with Deborra. Their friendship was still alive but there was a lingering… awkwardness. He had poured his heart out to Maya so many times about the divorce, how it tore him apart to think that he might end up alone. But that didn't happen. And he knew he moved on a little fast but it wasn't like he was going to propose to Maya anytime soon. He hoped Deborra was okay with it.

He hadn't spoken to her much in the past year, only for things regarding their children and his new relationship. She didn't really react to it. Which made him wonder what she was saying to their children.

“Dad, as long as you're happy, we are. Truly.” Oscar said, sincerity in his eyes. “Maya has been,” He glanced at her. “There for you for years. I honestly couldn't think of a better person for you.”

Ava nodded in agreement. “She’s wonderful,” She turned to Maya, “You're wonderful.”

Maya smiled bashfully, a light flush on her cheeks from the praise. Even after all these years, she couldn't help but react somehow to the compliments no matter how insignificant they may seem. She never got cynical. Perhaps that was because of Hugh. He always complimented her and made sure that she truly took them instead of denying them. She deserved them.

Hugh stared at Maya, a loving look in his eyes as he took her hand on the table and ran his thumb along her knuckles. “Yeah. She really is.” He breathed out dreamily.

Okay, your concept with Sonnet and Sakari is low-key very cool! Love the amount of detail you put into this stuff.

Anyways, I have a couple of things:

Kinda intrested to hear about the setting-

Also want to know a little more about Sonnet. Like, you said she was trapped in her own weapon for doing something terrible. I think you said something about killing another Light Starfolk. And if so, for what reason? Or was it accidental?

And... um... How is the public/ government going to react to a half-human, half-eldritch Sakari running around their community? I wonder if she'll become an urban legend-

Glad you love them! I'll be (hopefully) doodling their offical designs this evening!

Basically, I'm thinking of an urban-fantasy setting? Like It's the modern day, but there's monsters and stuff as well. Also magic... but it can only be used by specific sapient beings and humans aren't one of those (Unless they have an artifact of sorts).

Sakari's apartment is located near the Capital city of her country, which is also in the tropics! So she don't experience winter and stuff (Sonnet would be fascinated by the seasons, though).

Also for Sonnet, their story is a bit... sad, so to speak. They're a relatively young and inexperienced hunteress, who much rather explore than fight. In fact, while fighting their counterpart, there was another hunteress with them, trying to help. But... tragedy struck: their scythe slashed at their counterpart... and their fellow hunteress. This resulted in the death of both the hunter and the hunteress.

Due to this, they were banished by their kin for a simple mistake, and They weren't happy. In a fit of rage aimed at Sonnet, They sealed the little hunteress in their own scythe, cursing them for all of time. However, there is a way to free them... but unfortunately only They know... except LUCA just so happened to be eavesdropping on TOFA's plans.

I think Sakari would try to hide her starfolk traits to the best of her abilities. She usually wears a pretty long cloak currently, but as it progresses, she might have to hide from people entirely.

But all hope is not lost, as Sakari accidentally ends up with a random travelling party of adventurers while trying to find a way to break Sonnet's curse... and she would ask someone from said group to get her stuff from her old apartment, as she's going to be a similar type of starfolk to Angel, and she's also most likely would be 9 feet tall as a full-blown starfolk...

Plus, she did mention the whole ordeal with her and "her" scythe, which just also happened to have a trapped eldritch being in it, to said party, so she's not going to be pretty lonely. Other people, however.... let's just say that they'll be a bit freaked out-

So Sakari unintentionally becoming a sort of local legend is a thing that could happen...

Before I begin, @therese-lokidottir, @ripfic, I have read and understand your interpretations. I'd like to make clear I don't think Thor was a great brother: neither of them were, to be honest.

First, I will address ripfic's comment and clarify myself: “Thor has changed into the brother Loki has always wanted” I understand from the first and second movies that Loki wanted Thor to be more responsible, smarter, and more cunning (and more understanding of Loki). I believe Thor did change in these ways, making him a more appealing brother to Loki. This is the context of my statement. "Loki became more empathetic person” After the events of Avengers, Loki works with Thor to save his girlfriend. When he takes the throne of Asgard, he's not a dictator like he was on Earth, and during Ragnarok he comes to help when he could have escaped. He isn't fully redeemed by any means-- he's a trickster (antihero?) and we love him for it-- but he is arguably more empathetic than in Thor, when he literally tries to kill his brother and commit genocide.

Now, I'll try to reply to therese-lokidottir as concisely as I can.

"so what your saying is--" I could cut you off at the pass here and say "no, that's not what I'm saying" and leave it, but I'm going to approach your points in good faith.

"Thor didn't see Loki because it would have been hard and Thor didn't want to deal with that. Well, Loki went to see Thor knowing it would be hard and still offered to help." The problem here is the two scenes are taken out of context. Why was Loki in prison? Because he'd led an army to invade a world, resulting in the deaths of many people. Thor had an emotional connection to the reason why Loki was in prison, so he has a dilemma about visiting him. Why was Thor in prison? Because their sister had thrown them out of the Bifrost onto Sakar, and Thor had been forced into slavery while Loki hadn't. Loki has no emotional connection to Thor being in prison, so he has no dilemma about visiting him. Why is Thor mad at Loki while in the Sakari dungeon? Because he just found out Loki is alive (again), sort-of banished their father, and now Odin has died. Loki isn't outwardly sad about Odin's death (which is fine, he was a bad person), but Thor is mourning and has little patience for Loki.

"Loki went to see Thor in the hope that maybe he understand the pain of being lied to his whole. Life has proved to Loki that he is loved conditionally and yet in the end he'll always help Thor." I saw that as a bit of a sardonic line, but you make a good point. I agree that Loki has struggled with where he belongs and being loved, as many adoptees do. "In the end" indeed. I don't think that could be said about Avengers Loki, but I do think Loki has grown as a character, showing love for others and Thor even though they might not in return. That's a good character arc.

"Why does the odinfam get credit for "loving" Loki even though didn't provide the care he needed but Loki never gets anything even though he's proven time and again that he really does love his family."

I don't give them credit. The whole family is flawed, it's a Shakespearean tragedy. I would argue they do love him, but none of them show it well. I do want to point out, that Loki's tragic past does not justify his actions as a villain. And as a villain, he does need to be punished for the pathos of the story (including jail time). But I'm glad Loki got a redemption arc (which he did need) because he's such a compelling character.

"Loki is willing to put in the work Thor just wants Loki to do what he wants." I contest that both brothers have put in work. The whole point of the first film was Thor learning to be a better person. When Loki tries to kill him, Thor apologizes. Both brothers are trying, but not in the way the other wants them to, which causes conflict. What I've always liked about the Thor and Loki dynamic is I can always see where both of them are coming from.

"Thor suspects that someone else is behind Loki's actions," Citation needed. I rewatched that scene in Avengers: neither Loki nor Thor suggest a third party behind the scenes. Loki only says "it can't be stopped."

"but when Loki says he can't stop Thor doesn't even bother looking in to it," "But when Loki says he can't stop"-- Thor smiles and says they can do it, together. Then Loki stabs him.

"not even as a strategical move in case the person behind it might cause more problems." That is one of Thor's flaws: not planning ahead. You see him get better at it over the films, an improvement Loki likes, btw. But again, I don't think Thor had any idea Loki was working for someone in Avengers. Maybe he should have, but he didn't.

"Nope, just leave Loki on the floor to rot and never talks to him because it might be hard and so why bother."

"Never" is a bit strong. I think Loki is in jail maybe 2 weeks before Thor breaks him out. Is 2 weeks long enough to process a beloved family member coming back from the dead, committing war crimes, and trying to kill you, all of which they are outwardly unrepentant for? To be fair to Loki, I don't think he expected Thor to forgive him without a little persuasion.

Loki does go to visit Thor immediately on Sakar but, again, Loki isn't angry with Thor at the time.

Before I conclude, a short explanation of my understanding of Thanos and Loki. From the films (I'm not counting supplementary material or interviews), we know Loki ended up working for Thanos and Thanos is not nice to him. We don't know to what extent. We see in the Avengers he can cause pain from afar, not that he can control Loki's actions. From what I can remember, Loki took a lot of joy in attacking Earth, and expected to rule it. And I haven't seen all of the Loki show, but I don't think he ever tells his family that Thanos hurt him, and they didn't know to ask. Thor doesn't even know Thanos exists until Infinity War. So I can't say they neglected Loki in this way, because his adopted family literally had no idea it happened.

In conclusion, I love the Thor and Loki dynamic. I love them both separately, but they're at their best when they're together: and not with Thor ruling over Loki or vice versa, but as equals. I hope we get to see more of that in live action somehow. While Odin was a bad dad and Frigga was arguably passive, Thor's flaws are presented as flaws and he grows through them, as Loki does. Though he's not great at it, Thor tries to love and forgive and understand Loki. Loki also loves Thor, and though he doesn't always show it, when he does he does it with a grand gesture for all to see, which is cute.

TL;DR: Loki and Thor are flawed, fun characters. Loki has a tragic past and becomes a villain, then a hero. Thor is raised as a warrior, becomes a hero, then undergoes immense amounts of tragedy. I don't see the point of pitting them against each other, especially when the characters themselves don't want that.

Dark World: Thor presumably doesn’t visit Loki in solitary confinement for a year, until he absolutely has to. He blames him, cuts ties of bonding over lost mother, threatens him, and is just there to use Loki’s skills because there was literally no one else.

Ragnarok: Loki visits Thor in his populated jail cell on day 1 at risk to his own reputation, bonds over lost father, offers Thor help at the cost of his own safety…

The thing is, Sakari loves the water. He likes swimming, even in the freezing cold. He likes standing on the shore and staring out across the sea. But with the amount of water-related life-threatening situations he’s been in lately, he’s beginning to think that the relationship is a bit one-sided.

It’s a pointless thought to be having, really, but he ran out of productive thoughts some time ago. Now he’s just lying here, staring up at the ceiling and listening to the sound of water filling a bucket. He’s pretty sure he’s about to add another water-related life-threatening incident to the list.

He wishes he knew what these people wanted. Why they’d grabbed him off the street in front of his apartment, why they’d blindfolded him and brought him to…wherever this place is. He’d tried asking, and someone had slapped him across the face. After a little while, he’d asked again, to the same result.

He’d like to know what the point of all this is. They must want something. He doesn’t know how they expect to get it from him if no one is willing to speak to him.

He’s about to try his luck and ask again when the sound of running water stops. He cranes his neck as best as he can to try and see what’s going on, but he’s tied down too tightly for this to do much of anything. He supposes he’ll find out soon enough. Anyway, whatever it is, it isn’t going to be pleasant. Maybe it’s better to be surprised by it than to know exactly what’s going to happen to him ahead of time.

And then someone is standing next to him, just a torso clothed in black visible, and they put a cloth over his face and he only has time to think fuck before a wave of shockingly cold water is being poured over him.

He tries to keep calm and hold his breath. He’s pretty good at this, apparently too good for the likes of his captors. After several seconds of nothing happening, someone punches him in the stomach and there’s no air left in his lungs to exhale. He has to breathe. Water fills his nose and drains down his throat. The cloth adheres to his face like a second skin. He can’t breathe.

He shouldn’t panic. Shouldn’t being the operative word. Every natural instinct in his body is telling him to panic. He can’t breathe. He might as well be trapped under fifty feet of water. His heart is pounding and he can’t think straight and his lungs are burning and -

The cloth is gone and he can breathe again. He takes a deep, ragged breath and then starts to cough. He wants to say stop, please, just tell me what you want, but he doesn’t have the air to waste.

A few minutes pass, he thinks. Just when he finally begins to breathe a little easier, when his heart rate has slowed, the wet cloth is placed over his face again. He shouts and someone smacks him on the face. Water is poured over him. He doesn’t know if it’s better or worse the second time around.

It’s strange, how much like drowning it feels. If not for the feeling of fabric against his face, he’d believe it if someone told him he was back in that horrible shed, hanging from his ankles and submerged under freezing water.

The cloth goes away just as white spots begin to appear in the edges of his vision. Again he gasps for air, pulling it into his lungs greedily because he knows it’s just going to get taken away from him again.

He’s in the middle of a breath when they replace the cloth. “Please stop,” he manages to get out, but either they don’t hear him or they don’t care.

At some point he loses track of how many times this has happened. He feels dizzy from the repeated lack of air. He’s shivering from the cold, from the stress. His whole chest aches. He just wants this to be over.

He very nearly passes out once. The blackness is appealing in the face of the pain, but he’s afraid of what they might do to him when he’s not conscious. Afraid that if he passes out he might not wake back up again. And so he remains resolutely awake.

They’re in the middle of another round of this when there’s a bang, and then bang, bang, bang. Gunshots. The water stops pouring over his face but the cloth is still there and he still can’t breathe but gunshots must mean something is happening, must mean something is going to change. Maybe they even mean that everything is over.

The cloth is suddenly pulled away from his face. He forces his eyes to open. His vision is blurred from the water and he doesn’t have any idea who’s standing above him, whether they’re here to help him or not.

And then someone is untying the ropes that had been holding him down, and he guesses it’s the former. He tries to get up and makes it halfway into a sitting position before he starts coughing and can’t stop. Someone puts a hand behind his back and holds him up. Someone else touches his face, his wrist.

Finally, the coughing stops. Everything is still blurry but he feels like he is safe now. A voice says his name, the first time anyone’s said anything to him in a long time.

“Nurmi. Sakari.”

He knows her voice, would know it anywhere.

“Sofia Karppi,” he replies. His voice sounds wrecked in his ears, but her name on his tongue feels the same as it always does.

One of the blurry shapes steps forward and he knows it’s Karppi even though he still can’t really see her. She wraps her arms around him and his shaking hands reach up and grab her coat almost automatically.

“It’s okay,” Karppi says. “You’re safe.”

He rests his chin on her shoulder and breathes.

A fresh poll published in Wednesday's Helsingin Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun)shows a one-month decline of 0.9 percentage points, to 19.2 percent, for the Social Democratic Party headed by Prime Minister Sanna Marin (SDP).

The data for the poll was collected in late August until early September at a time when Marin's private life was being widely spotlighted by the media.

Sakari Nurmela, the research director of the polling organization Kantar, told HS that although the survey coincided with the leak of videos of the Marin partying in her free time, no direct connection between the results and that publicity can be drawn.

Nurmela added that it is yet to be seen if SDP's drop in support is a normal fluctuation or a longer-term phenomenon. In any case, with its current level of support, the SDP is the second most popular party in the country.

Meanwhile, this poll shows increased backing for the opposition National Coalition Party, up by 0.6 percentage points, and the Centre Party up by 0.8 percentage points.

The National Coalition Party, with the backing of over 23 percent of voters, continues in the lead. Slightly more than 16 percent of respondents voiced support for the Finns Party, fewer than the 17 percent it received in the last parliamentary election, but well above the 14 percent seen in a HS survey at the start of this year.

This latest poll also shows a slight increase in support for the Left Alliance, and a slight decline in backing for the Greens.

Slowing economy

The business and economic daily Kauppalehti reports that Finland's Labour Institute for Economic Research (Labore) has downgraded its growth forecast (siirryt toiseen palveluun)for Finland by 0.8 percentage points for next year due to the weakened international economic outlook.

Labore now forecasts that Finland's gross domestic product will grow by 1.8 percent this year and 0.7 percent next year. For the year 2024, Labore is predicting growth of 2.1 percent.

This research institute believes that Finland's trade with Russia will come to an almost complete halt and never return to previous levels. The stagnation of trade with Russia and the weakening of international export demand will reduce this year's economic growth by 1.5–2.0 percentage points. The war in Ukraine will continue to cause uncertainty.

According to the forecast, private consumption will continue to grow this year, although weakened by rapid inflation.

Households accumulated considerable savings during the pandemic and Labore believes the sudden contraction in real wages will push households to unload some of those savings this year. At the end of the year, however, private consumption will contract and will not grow very much next year.

Energy saving dos and don'ts

The energy crisis has created worries about future electricity bills, especially for people living in electrically-heated homes.

Ilta-Sanomat writes (siirryt toiseen palveluun) that while a lot of energy saving tips are available, the most important measures are often forgotten, and some of the most popular advice can end up being more expensive than one might imagine.

According to energy experts interviewed by this paper, the most effective way to save energy is to turn down the thermostat and cut back on the use of hot water.

Malkus Lindroos of the power company Vattenfall told the paper that allowing indoor temperatures to drop too low can lead to expensive structural damage to homes.

"This can happen even by accident if, for example, electric radiators are turned off completely and the heating is left to a heat pump alone," Lindroos points out.

Another misguided way to save money is by blocking ventilation ducts. The repairs for the resulting moisture damage can cost a lot more than the energy saved.

The experts Ilta-Sanomat spoke with recommend a temperature of 20–21 degrees in living areas at home. The ideal temperature in the bedroom is 18-20 degrees.

Temperatures lower than this can be in rooms that are not occupied. In stairwells of apartment buildings, the suitable room temperature is 17-18 degrees, in storage areas 12 degrees and in garages 5 degrees.

Big savings can also be made by reducing a 15 minute daily shower to just five minutes or less.

Brewery bankruptcy

A number of papers, including Iltalehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun), report that as widely expected, the Tampere-based Pyynikin Brewing Company has filed for bankruptcy.

The craft brewer, established in 2012, has produced numerous award-winning beers, as well as its own gins and vodkas. It also managed to export its beverages across Europe.

However, the company has been consistently in the red. According to press reports, the company generated a loss of no less than 3.7 million euros last year.

Now, not only will many thirsty connoisseurs miss their favourite brews, as a result of the bankruptcy the brewery's approximately 10,000 shareholders will probably lose their investment.
