Shinsengumi Members

I have decided to give a description for each Shinsengumi member I've come across. It came out of a desire to not let these members to go down as nameless persons in fandom. Those who have studied the Shinsengumi would surely know the charter members, the commanders, vice-commander and Captains of this police group as they have been a topic of various films, drama, novels, manga, anime etc. They are included here as well, along with those whom most of you haven't heard before.

As some of us know these men did not formally start out as the Shinsengumi nor did they end in that name. Most accept that the Shinsengumi started with a group of men breaking up from the Roshigumi that was ill-formed by Kiyokawa Hachiro. They will not be given the name "Shinsengumi" (Newly Selected Group) and will be known instead as "Miburoshi" (their headquarters was in Mibu village in the Yagi and Maekawa residence) until they have proven themselves worthy enough to be acknowledged by the Kyoto Protector, Matsudaira Katamori, Daimyo of Aizu and be officially sanctioned as a police force for the Bakufu. They will not retain the name however, using instead the Koyou Chibuntai (Pacification Corps) during their decline and inevitable end, at least in history.

Daughter: Chapter One, A Shie Hassaikai fanfiction

He had been in love with Sakai Jun since she joined their class in the seventh grade. She quickly became top of their class in grades, and always knew the right answer. If she didn't know it the first time, she'd keep working until she could raise her hand and definitely get it right the second time.

He knew her mother was Chinese and her father Japanese. Her parents ran the soba place that everyone loved to go to on their days off. He knew that her quirk was Ink Flow, but she never used it in school unless a particular math problem stumped her, and then she would write it out on her skin so she could see it in front of her, tangibly.

He knew she always read during breaks, but didn't know if that was because she wanted to, or if it was because she was shy. He never saw her around friends, not until they began eighth grade. Until then, she always ate alone in the cafeteria. She loved oranges. On rainy days, on his way to the cafeteria with his friends, he would see her sitting by a window and watching the rain. Sometimes she would notice him watching and smile in that way of hers, like it surprised her, and she'd look down quickly so that her bangs covered her eyes. Whenever she did that, like maybe she liked him, too, butterflies would fill him and he'd stumble over his words to hide how flustered he was. He was in love with her, and he'd never even spoken to her.

"Yo! Earth to Ichirou!"

"Just fucking talk to her!" Irinaka hissed at him during one of their breaks, back of his hand slapping against his chest to get his attention. It worked. It brought him back to Irinaka sitting on his desk and his twin, Kenji, sitting on Irinaka's desk. Kenji looked like he was trying not to laugh. Irinaka looked pissed. "Every day you do the same thing: you just stare at her. If you want to talk to her so badly, just fucking do it!"

Ichirou looked back at where Sakai sat at her desk, book out as usual, but instead of reading, she stared out the window as rain pattered their city. She would be watching the rain at lunch. He wondered if she had an orange.

Maybe today would be the day he took her one. Joined her at lunch. Asked her if she read during breaks because she wanted to or because she felt she had to. Asked her to be his friend.

But - "Nah," he waved Irinaka off, likely pissing the guy off more. He always had a short fuse, though sometimes he reacted for shits and grins and nothing else. "It's not worth it."

Ichirou wanted to talk to her. He wanted to see her fully, instead of these observations he scraped together. But there was an expanse between them. She was headed straight for the top; she was headed for success. He was the son of Yakuza, and he would likely also join the Shie Hassaikai once he was old enough. They all would. Kenji and Irinaka, too.

He and Sakai were on different paths, so he could find contentment in just watching her.

Nakamoto Ichirou was the guy who always had a smile for anyone, whether they were friends with him or not. He always had something positive to say. She was awkward and stumbled over her words and didn't always know what to say, but Nakamoto could make friends with anyone. He was outgoing and personable, and his confidence was overwhelming. His smile was like the sun, so bright that even his eyes squinted when he smiled. He could be counted on to answer their teacher incorrectly every single time, which was a feat because he did make an effort.

He was the most athletic guy in their class. When they were in quirk training, everyone always wanted to be paired with him. He could read people so well and could dissect how they had been using their quirk and talk about new ways they could use it. Partly, it was because his family ran the Quirk Dojo in town - the place that kids or adults could go to get more in-depth training and control over their quirks, or just learn martial arts. But Nakamoto was just talented in it. His nickname was Slip, because once he activated his quirk, Overlook, he used it deftly, slipping from people's vision and was able to complete the physical exercise every single time, no matter what the challenge was.

At break, she would take out her book - whichever one they were reading through for class - but would never turn a page, so focused on listening for him in the back of the class, hanging out with his friends. She wished he would come talk to her. It would be easier than trying to approach his friends and Irinaka. That boy looked like he was mad all the time, and kind of intimidated her a little, but his twin always had a joke up his sleeve.

At lunch, when she sat at the windows when it rained, sometimes she would see him, Nakamoto, and sometimes their eyes would meet and she would glance away quickly, just in case he could tell that just seeing him gave her butterflies.

She knew she shouldn't want him to speak to her. His dad was Yakuza, and she knew what that meant. She knew she should stay away. But she wished he would, anyway. Continue Reading Daughter, on AO3

An explanation… To keep my brain from rusting I started a project to translate the drama tracks that came with the character song CDs and other stuff relating to Daiya no Ace (because I love them and they’re all hilarious). My disclaimer - I am not a native speaker of Japanese, but I will do my best!

Character Song CD 03: Kominato Haruichi Drama Track 01 Featuring Haruichi, Ryousuke and Eijun

Scene: It’s (probably) dark at the back of the dorms. In any case, Ryousuke has summoned his brother to this place for a private chat. Frankly, being summoned anywhere alone by Ryousuke is pretty ominous, but Haruichi’s probably immune. A discussion between brothers into which Eijun stumbles and as a result, becomes the focus of Ryousuke’s latest amusement.

Ryousuke: Haruichi.

Haruichi: Aniki? Why’ve you gone to the trouble of summoning me out the back of the dorm here like this?

Ryousuke: It’s something I can’t talk about in front of other people, that’s why.

Haruichi: But, I wonder if other people, when there are brothers in the same club, have the same struggle to figure out what to do?

Ryousuke: I wonder. At the Senior level, the whole senpai and kouhai thing was not as important, after all. (Translator’s Fangirl’s note: Someone should have told that to Miyuki’s senpai in Edogawa!). There were often siblings on the same teams.

Haruichi: That’s true, there were.

(At this point the peaceful conversation between brothers is interrupted by noise Sawamura, apparently looking for Haruichi, and yelling.)

Sawamura: Harucchi! Where are you, Harucchi?!

Haruichi: (Startled): Eijun-kun?

(Sawamura reaches them).

Sawamura: Oh, Harucchi! This is where you were hiding!

Haruichi: What’s up?

Ryousuke: Ah, the noisy one has shown up…

Sawamura: Ooh! Oniisan is here as well!

Ryousuke: If you’re here to be a nuisance I’ll go, however…

Sawamura: Eeh, no, not at all. I have something that I want to ask of you, Oniisan, as the guardian of the keystone position on the field! Please, do me the honour of listening to me!

Haruichi: The keystone…which means it’s something to do with Kuramochi-senpai?

Sawamura: Exactly, Harucchi! That ashi-dake-obake (Translator note: literally, foot only monster, basically implying he’s only good for speed and nothing else) keeps saying annoying things like, “you don’t act like a proper kouhai, sort out the way you speak to your senpai”!

Haruichi: …Calling him an ashi-dake-obake is a whole lot worse if you ask me…

Sawamura: Ah…so that means I am forced to suffer over it?! (He makes what sounds like frustrated gnashing noises).

Haruichi: Is it really something worth clutching your head and fretting over? If you just attached ‘senpai’ to that person’s name, and used it normally, it would solve the problem, surely? If you remember that the person you’re talking to is higher ranking than you are, it becomes really easy to do it naturally.

Ryousuke: I wonder if he can be fixed that easily.

Haruichi: You think he’s beyond fixing?

Ryousuke: He has that kind of personality that hates to give in, which can be a drawback.

Haruichi; That’s true. Eijun-kun definitely has those moments where he doesn’t want to admit defeat. Furuya’s the same way, mind you.

Sawamura: (annoyed): Don’t put Furuya and I together like we’re the same!

Ryousuke: Because his feelings of not wanting to lose are so strong, even if he’s dealing with someone higher up in the status hierarchy, he doesn’t really want to acknowledge them. Surely that’s the problem?

Sawamura: Ah, just as I expected from Oniisan! You understand the problem well! (Translator note: He is really confused with his formalities here – he uses a very formal verb (irassharu) and yet doesn’t use the polite form of it when addressing Ryousuke. I think he’s just a lost cause to be honest)

Haruichi: I see. So it’s a problem with Sawamura’s thoughts and feelings themselves, basically?

Sawamura: If that’s what it is, then it’s simple. Easy!

Ryousuke: But you do use tameguchi to address both Miyuki and Kuramochi, don’t you? (Translator note: tameguchi is plain speech, in which honorifics like ‘san’ and polite verb forms such as ‘masu’ are not used. It’s the kind of language you would use to peers of the same age as you. So a style of language that is ok for Eijun to use with Haruichi and co, but not with anyone in the years above him). And you kept forgetting Shirasu’s name, as well.

Sawamura: (stiffens)…stop dragging up my dark past like that!

Ryousuke: You should at least remember the names of the people with whom you battle on the same field. Can you?

Haruichi: Aniki…even if it’s Eijun-kun we’re dealing with, surely that’s a bit too much?

Ryousuke: In that case, let’s test it out. Haruichi, try saying the names of the people in the benched twenty of the first string. Just the surnames.

Haruichi: Surnames? Ah. And then Eijun-kun has to give their first names?

Ryousuke: If he can answer all of them, then I’ll acknowledge him.

Sawamura: Seriously? (He sounds excited). Yosh! Harucchi! I’m relying on you!

Haruichi: Ah…sure. In that case…Kuramochi.

Sawamura: Youichi.

Haruichi: Isashiki

Sawamura: Spi….er…no. Jun! (He was going to call him Spitz!)

Haruichi: Yuuki

Sawamura: Ōta Buchou…? That’s the guy with the sideburns…?

Ryousuke: That’s right. The guy with the sideburns, who teaches Social Studies…so? Tell me his first name?

Sawamura: ……………….I…I…I concede.

Ryousuke: It seems you have a long way to go still. Go back, study and try again later.

Sawamura: (emphatically), I, Sawamura Eijun, will correct my knowledge and return!
