Media can be improved by giving any two characters a Dynamic. Not romantic nor potentially romantic, just give a unique flavour every pair of characters who commonly interact. There should be no generic superior-subordinate or peers out there. If you have two characters exchanging dialogue based on just their official ranking then you could insert any two faceless nobodies and your story would be the same. Put some seasonings on. If two people are on friendly terms then there should be some defining incident that bonded them together. If they’re working together than there should be some major decision that either put them on edge around each other or made them commit to each other.

I immediately latched on to your spies/assassins suggestion as well as kikumomo, so in this AU Kikue and Momoe are competent spies both training up their (currently incompetent) protégées. Momoe and Abe don't know yet that Hanai is Kikue's son... it will be a big third act twist, so shhh, keep it a secret.

Izumi and Mizutani make gadgets and do man-in-the-chair stuff for them back at hq, probably overseen by Shiga because otherwise they would get nothing done, ever. (That is mostly a lie, they are both competent, they just also horse around approximately 110% of the time. maybe sakaeguchi and the rest of the team can also be there with various specializations. hamada did not finish the training so he is an information broker on the outside that they use all the time)

They get a mission to investigate a (short, loud, filterless) star athlete after he shows up a bunch around some longtime enemies and they start wondering if he's a target or a recruit or a third worse thing, and his teammate with horrible social anxiety ends up getting caught up in all the drama, as well. :)

y'all, the way when Sakaeguchi was picked for sub-captain everyone was clapping like yay sakaeguchi! but when Abe was picked, nothing lmao

How badly did Haruna manage to screw up. How much does he suspect. My boy. Abe liked you. Personally. Abe was personally invested in you. Does he know what that means? Who does Abe like in this world: Momoe and Mihashi. He’s probably fond of Shun. The kid who barely remembers his classmates’ names wanted Haruna to be his teammate. Abe liked him! Abe Takaya! He wanted him to be his ace! The boy takes all your bad pitches to the chest and you leave him 14 points down with a full count. Motoki had Abe calling him ‘-san’ and remembering his words and he walked away. Even at the end he wanted something from you. The catcher number 2 Abe-kun actively tried to be what Haruna needed because Motoki-san needed it. How many times does Haruna yell at Akimaru for not being the same thing? God. Does he even realize the half of what he’s done.
