St. Petersburg hosts international economic forum
Russia is hosting the 27th Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2024), dedicated to economic multipolarity.
St. Petersburg has become the world’s economic capital for three days, according to Russian media. Despite the sanctions, representatives from more than 130 countries are attending a major 2024 Russian economic summit.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is also taking part in the plenary session.
The Sultanate of Oman has the honourable status of a guest country at this year’s forum. Its stand is located in the central pavilion and is at the centre of attention. Trade turnover between Oman and Russia grew by 60% in 2023, with tourist traffic almost quadrupling.
The delegation from Oman is represented by businessmen, diplomats, and officials. Saeeda Rashid Mohammed, official representative of the Omani delegation to SPIEF 2024, said:
We have a great desire to co-operate with Russian businesses, we would like to see a lot of them as investors in our market. We would also welcome more tourists in our country.
The Russian Finance Ministry is working on an initiative to use foreign digital financial assets in international settlements. According to Deputy Finance Minister Ivan Chebeskov, the forum offers huge prospects in economic growth and decentralised finance.

I sit alone on November 20,2023 on my 25th birthday thinking this is the worse birthday ever but it’s not this is everything I prayed for, everything I dreamed of.Happily eating and drinking wine and a scenery that is foreign to me. Thanking God for the guidance thus far. I cried last year this time I’m swimming and floating in the puddle that was suppose to drown me. I could’ve drove home hours ago to feel the need of “company” but Lord knows I don’t need a crowd to celebrate the growth that only I have encounter. I needed this moment, I needed to this talk. The rhythm of self. To finally understand it’s me,myself and God that I can thank.
Cheers to the best year, the greatest year. Cheers to me, the brave one. The Golden One.
To the Purest Purpose.
Thank you.

what i read in may
how is it may lmao... anyway i went thru a bit of reading slump this month and i’d like to pretend it’s bc i had a lot of uni stuff to do (i did) but tbh it’s bc game of thrones infected me with Vintage* ASOIAF Feels & i didn’t really care about reading anything else
celestial bodies, jokha alharthi (tr. from arabic) quiet and evocative novel about a network of families in a village in oman, told over three (?) generations, but centred on three sisters, mayya, asma and khawla (but not as focused on them as i would have liked). interesting to get some insight into omani society, class relations (& especially slavery and the now-free slaves), gender, tradition and westernisation, but it’s also really lovely and sad. ultimately a bit scattered and vague tho. 3/5
the taming of the shrew, billy shakes (uni) academia and assorted shakespeareans like bending over backwards to explain why this is not misogynist but actually subversive/farcical/ironic/meta or whatever and that’s a fine & worthy endeavour i’m sure but the only valid reading of the taming is that kate is actively plotting to murder petruccio in every single scene so... that’s that on that. misandry stars/5
vinegar girl, anne tyler (uni) y’all i don’t have high expectations for hogarth shakespeare entries (tho shylock really won me over last month) but fuck this was bad. staggeringly BAD, both as a book and as an adaptation of shrew. it starts out with a completely declawed & detoothed kate, who on the scale of ‘timid wifey’ to ‘shrewish firebrand’ is uh ‘apathetic & slightly sour’.... which is a choice i guess. in the beginning i hoped we were seeing a kate who was repressing her rage (and there is one genuinely great line where the bianca annoys kate while she’s gardening and ‘kate stuffed a snarl of vine into the trash bag’ like okay anne that’s cool) and that the taming would be reverse, i.e. would free kate to feel & act on her rage. but instead... honestly i can’t even tell you what the arc was instead? there’s no real taming, kate (who is very stuck in her life and job) just chooses this green card marriage to become a little bit less stuck and i guess pyotr (petruccio) likes her the way she is, that is sour and Not Like Her Dumb Blonde Sister. and then in the end we get a speech about how men have it really hard bc they never learn how to deal with feelings (when kate throughout the book has herself struggled w/ social skills). can’t wait to rip this apart in class. 1/5 (ALSO how did hogarth have atwood on their roster and not give her the shrew wtf)
doctor wooreddy’s prescription for enduring the ending of the world, mudrooroo (uni) for my postcolonial australia course; it’s about the colonisation of australia and genocide against indigenous australians from the pov of tasmanians and an englishman who’s never seen a white man’s burden he didn’t immediately pick up (all based on real historical people). lots of interesting stuff in there (i’d love to read something about gender roles/gendered spaces in indigenous australian culture) but tbh it’s a bit of a slog (at 200 pages...) 2/5 embassytown, china miĂ©ville cool scifi novel about weird alien languages (the ariekei, who speak with two mouths at once and cannot lie - apparently their language doesn’t signify so...uh. linguistically not particularly sound at all but a) it’s a cool concept, b) they’re aliens so like whatever) and what happens when humans, not possessing two mouths and very much capable of lying, communicate with them. there is a lot of really original & fascinating concepts here but some problems w/ the execution (pacing/characters mainly) - not as much as with city&city tho. 3.5/5
the little prince, antoine de saint-exupéry (tr. from french) i wanted something short & bittersweet & this is it. anyway i have these vague & but very vivid memories of seeing like. a slide show of this w/ narration at the berlin planetarium when i was a kid & that is the best way to consume this story. 4/5
the year of the death of ricardo reis, josĂ© saramago (tr. from portuguese) took me nearly 2 months to finish this & it’s under 500 pages which should already say a lot. i enjoyed this while reading mostly, and saramago’s style is beautiful, but it is a bit of a drag & reis honestly is not particularly sympathetic or interesting. the undercurrent of the rise of fascism is the best thing about the novel & makes the end really work but there’s too much tangential meandering about how old dude ricky reis is obsessed with a mucher younger girl and like... yawn. i will try again w/ saramago tho. 2/5
follow the rabbit-proof fence, nugi garimara (uni) story about three young girls with indigenous australian mothers and white fathers escaping from the residential school they were abducted to as part of the stolen generations, based on the author’s mother’s own life. it’s an impressive story of resilience and survival, but perfunctorily written. we’re also going to watch the film & that should be interesting. 2/5
everything under, daisy johnson i find it quite hard to talk about this bc there’s something quite vague and uncertain about it, something elusive. some things i will say: vivid, lyrical prose; the setting (oxford canal boat community) is great, the monster is genuinely creepy, and i really like the three (or 4?) narrative strands and how they interweave. i kind of wish i hadn’t known which greek myth it was a loose adaptation of (so i won’t say here) bc i definitely spent too much time trying to map the myth onto the book - and the ‘reveal’ might have been better w/o that knowledge anyway. 3.5/5
the sparrow, maria doria russell wonderful wonderful warm & human & tragic scifi novel about JESUITS IN SPACE!!! told in two timelines: in the first, set mainly in 2019 (which is great) music from another planet is transmitted to earth and emilio sandoz, jesuit linguist + multilingual (@hbo or netflix: cast oscar isaac please & thank), and his closest friends are chosen (by god?? MAYBE) to go on a secret space mission to make first contact bc jesuits.... have a lot of.... experience... with that. everyone is hopeful, curious, excited, and our guy emilio is literally radiant with god’s love or whatever. in the second timeline, 2060, emilio has been sent home by a second expedition, who have since gone radio silent, the only survivor, disturbingly (!) mutilated, broken in mind and body and unwilling to talk. all we know: the 2nd expedition found him in a brothel & he immediately killed the alien child who led them to him. so... what went wrong? (how could... first contact.... possibly go wrong...?) what did emilio do? was whatever happened god’s will? sorry i’m not super coherent about this but IT’S GREAT MY DUDES. also between this & canticle my scifi subgenre really just is ‘scifi but make it religious’. 4.5/5
on the whole, not a great reading month, but the sparrow... *chef kiss* & i’m currently reading the artifical silk girl (relatable hot mess in weimar berlin) which is.... AMAZING... alfred döblin who???

Paying tribute to the lost stars of Mexico 86...
Tumblr media
Many of our heroes have unfortunately passed away since that glorious Mexican summer of 1986, including the tournament's greatest icon.
Here's a celebration of those no longer with us

Italia Gaetano Scirea
Italy's Mexico 86 skipper was a World Cup winner, who was capped 78 times. The Juventus legend, who retired in 1988, sadly died in Sep 1989 in a car accident in Poland while scouting for the club. He was just 36.
Tumblr media
Paolo Rossi
Italy's star of 1982 did not feature at all in Mexico. He moved from Milan to Verona after the World Cup and retired a year later at just 30, moving into real estate and TV punditry. Rossi died in Dec 2020 at 64.
Tumblr media
Gianluca Vialli
The young Sampdoria striker appeared as a substitute in all 4 of the Azzurri’s games in Mexico. He joined Juventus for a world record £12.5m in 1991 and won his 59th and final cap in 1992. Later coached Chelsea. He died in January 2023, aged 58.
Tumblr media
Bulgaria  Georgi Dimitrov
Bulgaria's captain in 1986 joined Saint Etienne after Mexico and would go on to win 77 caps before retiring in 1990. He died in May 2021 aged 62.
Tumblr media
Anio Sadkov
The midfielder won 80 caps during a 10-year international career that ended in 1991, although he only retired in 1996. Sadakov later managed Lokomotiv Plovdiv. He announced he had MND in 2014 and died in 2017 at 55.
Tumblr media
Zivko Gospodinov
The attacking midfielder won 39 caps between 1983-87, and retired in 1992. He died at 57 in May 2015.
Tumblr media
Argentina  Diego Maradona
The ultimate football icon played for Argentina at two more World Cups after 86, and was his nation's coach in 2010. His passing at just 60 in Nov 2020 was marked worldwide.
Tumblr media
Jose Luis Cuciuffo
While absent from the Panini album, he was a key man in Argentina's defence, starting all but the first game. He died aged just 43 in 2004 after suffering a fatal gunshot wound while out hunting in Buenos Aires province.
Tumblr media
Jose Luis Brown
The defender was a key man for Argentina in Mexico, scoring the opener in the final. After retiring in 1989 he enjoyed a long coaching career, including a spell with the national team. He died at 63 in Aug 2019.
Tumblr media
South Korea Chung Yong-hwan
While not in the 1986 Panini album, the defender played every game in Mexico and was captain in 1990 on his way to 86 caps. He retired in 1994 and died following a long illness in 2015, aged 55.
Tumblr media
Oh Yun-kyo
The goalkeeper played all 3 games in Mexico, winning the last of his 10 caps in the defeat to Italy. He later coached in the US but died in Seoul in 2000, aged just 40.
Tumblr media
Belgique-Belgie Leo Clijsters
The defender did not feature in the 86 Panini album and was used sparingly, although he made a bigger impact in 1990. His daughter Kim became a World No.1 tennis player. Clijsters died in 2009 at just 52.
Tumblr media
Stephane Demol
The Anderlecht defender, 20, made his international debut just weeks before Mexico, but played every game as Belgium reached the semis, scoring in the epic win against the USSR. Later joined Porto but won his final cap at 25 in 1991. Was Belgium's assistant manager from 2006-08. He died following a heart attack, aged 57, in June 2023.
Tumblr media
Irak Nadhim Shaker
While not in the Panini album, Shaker was a key man in Mexico and won the last of his 57 caps against Mexico. He enjoyed a long coaching career, becoming Iraq’s coach in 2009. He died, aged 61, in Sep 2020 after contracting COVID-19.
Tumblr media
Ali Hussein Shihab
The midfielder, part of Iraq’s Asian Games winning team in 1982, played every minute of Iraq’s sole World Cup appearance to date in 1986. He won 73 caps from 1981-89. Shihab died in Oct 2016, aged 55.
Tumblr media
Ahmed Radhi
Iraq’s only World Cup goalscorer to date, following his strike against Belgium, was named Asian Footballer of the Year in 1988. He won 121 caps between 1982-97, scoring 62 goals. He died, aged 56, in Jun 2020 after contracting COVID-19.

Who is Prod Antzoulis?
Tumblr media
Prod Antzoulis (1991) is a Cypriot born photographer and creative director raised in Dubai. With an aesthetic firmly rooted in the Middle East, Prod captures the on-ground lifestyle and consumer culture while attempting to narrate his journey, mapping reference points which allow him to decipher his cross-cultural identity. His work reflects an honest and unedited series of moments revealing the eccentricities and particularities of places and people. By nurturing a sense of comfort and familiarity, Prod seeks to capture the veiled rawness that lies within his subject’s frame and is committed to embody the sense of nostalgia with which he navigates reality.  Prod has been shooting exclusively on analogue, turning his passion for photography into a profession after he was commissioned to shoot the final collection of an Omani Central Saint Martins graduate in 2015. With a portfolio that spans the region, Prod has worked with brands such as Gucci, Saint Laurent, Red Valentino, Okhtein and Amina Muaddi. Most recently, he shot GQ Middle East covers, including Latin pop-star Maluma, singer & songwriter Mustafa the Poet, as well as the ‘Self Isolation’ issue chronicling tales that documented interactions between himself and seven Arab talents scattered across the globe, shot over Zoom during quarantine. He has also shot covers for Elle Arabia, Jamalouki, and Emirates Woman.  Prod’s work has been featured in Vogue Italia, GQ, Schon! and Oyster Magazine, as well as regional publications such as Vogue Arabia, CNN Arabic, Mille World, GQ Middle East, and Emirates Woman.
