INDIA ON MIRABAI’S SHOULDERS

26 year old Indian weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu had foreseen her future in sports at quite an early age. Being engaged in firewood lifting as a child, she had to toil hard in order to overcome financial hurdles and get to where she is today- a silver medalist in the 49kg weightlifting category in 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She is the only second weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari in the Indian Olympic history to secure a silver medal in weightlifting. Mirabai Chanu was also previously conferred with the Padma Shri and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards by the Indian Government.

    Upon returning to India with a silver medal in the bag on 27th July 2021, she was greeted with an overwhelming reaction by the Indian crowd. The Indian Union Minister of Law and Justice had earlier tweeted that Mirabai Chanu vowed to come back to India with a medal before leaving for Tokyo.
