Tom Hiddleston Has Compared Mike Flanagan's The Life Of Chuck To One Of The Best Stephen King Adaptations, And I'm So Hyped
Writer/director Mike Flanagan has already made two of the all-time best Stephen King adaptations. In 2017, he worked his magic to bring us the horrifying character study that is Gerald’s Game, and two years later, he pulled off a cinematic miracle with Doctor Sleep – which has helped aleve the notorious animosity that the author feels toward Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Given this track record, it’s hard not to have exceptionally high expectations for his third King film, the upcoming The Life Of Chuck – and star Tom Hiddleston certainly isn’t doing anything to decrease hype. In a new interview, he has compared the movie to another one of the best King movies ever: Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption.
With the finale of Loki Season 2 dropping on Disney+ last week and the SAG-AFTRA strike now over, CinemaBlend’s own Erik Swann did a virtual interview with Hiddleston earlier today, and they in part spoke about the actor’s upcoming Stephen King adaptation. Asked about his personal experience with the author, the Marvel star recalled both his love for Shawshank Redemption and noted what it shares in common with The Life Of Chuck. Said Hiddleston,
I remember seeing the Shawshank Redemption when I was about 12 or 13 years old, and I think [it’s] still probably one of my top five favorite films of all time – because there is a warmth and a strength of spirit and a kind of overarching philosophy that is resolutely on the side of life and love that's at the center of that story. And I think it's that Stephen King that’s behind The Life of Chuck, the same warmth, same spirit.
The Life Of Chuck is based on the novella of the same name, which was first published in the 2020 Stephen King omnibus If It Bleeds. A cerebral and emotional piece of writing, the story is split into three sections and they unfold in reverse chronological order – beginning with the titular Chuck dying from a brain tumor at the age of 39.
Tom Hiddleston will be playing the eponymous character in the upcoming movie, which started filming in Alabama last month with permissions from SAG-AFTRA during the strike. This is the first time that he has worked with Mike Flanagan, but he is surrounded in the cast by many of Flanagan’s regulars – including Annalise Basso, Matt Biedel, Saidah Arrika Ekulona, Rahul Kohli, Heather Langenkamp, Carl Lumbly, Violet McGraw, Molly C. Quinn, Sauriyan Sapkota, Kate Siegel, Samantha Sloyan, and Michael Trucco.
Speaking about his first time working with Mike Flanagan and joining the filmmaker’s special troupe, Hiddleston remarked,
I had the most wonderful experience working with Mike Flanagan and with the company of performers that he assembled. I find it a very moving and beautiful story.
As you can tell by the use of past tense, Tom Hiddleston has completed his work on The Life Of Chuck (Karen Gillan recently celebrated wrapping with a TikTok video a few days ago), but we sadly don’t know when we’re actually going to see the film, as distribution plans have not yet been announced.

Aw man all the awesome cameos in SVU. Mahershala Ali?! Nick Stahl (so glad to see him)?? Deborah Ann Woll? Mischa Barton? Kathy Griffin? Brad Dourif (the wormtongue dude)? Hamish Linklater (the Midnight Mass dude)? Izzy Steele (Tina from Dirk's)? Mike Tyson?
Captain Holt?? (RIP Andre Braugher - what a privilege watching his performance here T_T)
I would marvel at Sharon Stone but I agree with some redditors that her acting was subpar here. She was kinda theatrical - not in a good way for a show that strives for realism.
But... constantly some jaw dropping performances from various guest stars... Lena Olin. Saidah Arrika Ekulona. These two ladies in particular just were INCREDIBLE.
Some seasons are not available on streaming (ughhhh) but seriously most episodes are really absorbing to watch. I hope more seasons will be made available soon!!

2024 Horror Challenge: [37/?]
↳“Charlotte Brice: 7 years old. Yellow dress, pink shoes, white socks. Abduction, right in front of her mom.“ Amber Alert (2024) dir. Kerry Bellessa
Plot: A ride-share turns into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse after it follows a car fitting the description of an AMBER ALERT.
Starring: Hayden Panettiere, Tyler James Williams, Kevin Dunn, Saidah Arrika Ekulona, Kurt Oberhaus & Katie McClellan
More catching up on reviews and I'm well aware this movie being included for a horror challenge is probably a total reach since the debate between straight-up thrillers getting labeled along horror is there but I felt like it. lol When it turned out the abductor was a serial child killer as well it feels less wrong to claim it as at least adjacent to horror cuz that was a slight shift in the narrative to make it a little darker. And well, I did also include Compliance this year, and this certainly has more thrills than that. Also, I just felt like talking about the movie. I didn't have a lot of expectations for it since besides the casting, it did seem like something you'd maybe watch on Lifetime but I was still curious about it. I didn't even realize this was a remake of a 2012 movie by the same director (I believe it was given the found footage treatment?? Had no idea about it) so that was interesting to find out. I'll say there were some plot choices that logically don't really work (I mean, the actual plot itself is a little unrealistic the whole time but it is a movie so lol) and it feels kinda slow in the middle. I think focusing on the main characters' personal lives the way they did kinda hindered the thriller part of the story because the tension gets lost. Also, it makes you kinda have issues with Tyler's character I would say cuz it sounds as if he's a flaky dad and he's choosing to be again but at least this time for a good reason. But I guess they figured he's such a charismatic actor, we'd be able to gloss over that fact idk :/ And then we get a monologue from Hayden later on explaining why she's so passionate about saving the girl that feels like a reach. So, like I said, the middle lags a bit. But I was drawn in at the beginning though. Hayden & Tyler worked really well together imo and kept me engaged, even when it was losing me a little. I've seen people say Hayden could have been better but I think she was perfectly fine. She's meant to be a little guarded in the beginning but I definitely felt her determination to find the little girl throughout. Katie McClellan should be given props imo cuz she really sold her heartbreak and rage over her kidnapped daughter in what scenes she had. Overall, the supporting actors were pretty good, if not possibly underused but it's fine. Not gonna lie, the last act was giving Lifetime vibes because I'm pretty sure they spend more time searching the abductor's house than actually having to confront him and the movie wraps up almost immediately afterwards. So, not a perfect movie by any means but it was a decent enough watch for the one time. Mostly because I rather like both the lead actors but hey, it could have been a lot worse so I'll take it. lol

Last night I had this wonderful experience performing a reading of "Unjust" by Lee Raines for the Elizabeth Taylor #aidsfoundation at Paramount Pictures. I played the role of a New Jersey Republican Senator with a wife & son who passed away from #AIDS. It was a great experience working along side actors John Clarence Stewart and Saidah Arrika Ekulona. A big thank you to our director Jenny Sullivan and Charles Wilson for all his work putting the evening together. Lastly, to everyone involved Gilead Sciences, The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, #HIVIsNotACrime, the singers from #youshalllhiv2, and these fierce advocates of change Greg Mathis, Janet Butler-McPhee, Harold Philips, Robert Suttle, Celia Chung and so many more who created this event! #grateful #love #workingactor #support #actorlife #lgbtqia
