Queerness in Indian Media
↳Film: MAJA MA (2022, Hindi) dir. ANAND TIWARI
Maja Ma follows Pallavi Patel (Madhuri Dixit), a closeted lesbian who gave up her beloved, Kanchan (Simone Singh), decades ago and has since become a devoted mother, housewife, and adored member of her community. While making preparations for her son's (Ritwik Bhowmik) wedding, however, Pallavi is outed to the entire town--and subsequently must deal with the consequences to herself, her former beloved, and her family.
Madhuri Dixit discusses her role in this movie, how movies like this are more possible now because of OTT streaming, and the "unexpected reactions" to the story here.
Madhuri Dixit discusses this movie coming from "a place of love", wanting the LGBTQ community to "feel seen", and "accepting people for who they are" here.
The actress Madhuri Dixit has been in multiple gay and gay-coded media, both as a supportive character and as the gay character herself. She has also been supportive in real life of the LGBTQ community.
#bollywood#maja ma#queerness in indian media#I love how in every interview they're like 'so was it difficult to accept? were you afraid? were you nervous? did you hesitate?'#and every time she INSTANTLY is like 'no not at all. I loved the script. it is a story that needs to be told.'#queen of the gays!!#also if I had a dollar for every time gajraj rao plays the confused husband/father in a movie with gay people I'd have two dollars#which isn't much but it's funny that it's happened twice#anyway I have mixed feelings about some of the side stuff in this movie and the ending felt incomplete and too safe#but I understand that they already took such a big risk with her saying 'lesbian' outright rather than just coding#and then kanchan being gender non conforming in the past#which by the way. that moment during the dance when pallavi accepts that part of her too...[lies down]#it's so rare to see gnc people even in gay media so it was good.#which is why I had to include it in the gifset

Amaran
The movie was really good, and it kept up a strong pace right from the start. It’s an army story, and while the first half was fast and engaging, the second half got a bit predictable. Since we already know how the story ends, it would’ve been more interesting if they’d added a little more suspense instead of going in a straight line. But that’s honestly the only thing I felt could’ve been better.
The love story really stands out in this movie. They showed it beautifully without overdoing anything, and that’s what made it work. Sai Pallavi was amazing in her role – honestly, one of her best performances. The character Rebecca, who she plays, is shown as strong and resilient, just like the real person she’s based on. I’ve seen the real Rebecca in interviews, so I could totally imagine her reacting just like Sai Pallavi did in the movie. That realistic portrayal added a lot to the character.
The movie also captured the stress and worry that an army family goes through, wondering when they’ll get a call or what news they might hear. There’s this lovely scene where the couple talks over a video call before going to sleep – it felt so real and showed their relationship perfectly. Sivakarthikeyan did a fantastic job balancing his role as a family man and a dedicated army officer. You could feel the effort he put into showing both sides of the character.
The fight scenes and the moment he says, "This is the face of the Indian army," looked very real, showing how soldiers actually handle combat. The war scenes had so much detail, and you could see how much work went into making them look realistic.Sivakarthikeyan’s transformation for this role was just on another level.
This movie totally does justice to Major Mukund's story .

Spoilers for the movie Mersal (2017)
I do not actually think much of the romance in mass action films (as in the ones with heavy action plots) because the "heroine" or the hero's love interest is either underused or forgotten towards the end of the film. It's not that I hate it hate it. It's just negligible to me - even in one of my favorite movies, Master, where there isn't actually a romance going on between JD and his love interest (I have forgotten her name see). We don't know if he reciprocates. Also, we have that one song/montage of her falling for our hero because of course she does, who wouldn't blah blah, but our hero has a bigger mission to fulfill. And that was fine with me because the focus of that movie was the action.
Which is why I really like the relationship between Vetrimaaran (Vijay) and his wife Aishwarya (Nithya Menon) in Atlee's Mersal (2017).
They're different for Vijay's character lineups because they're already married. And they have great chemistry together. Aish and Vetrimaaran tease and flirt. They're playful with each other.
With her dying breath, Aish makes her husband promise that she will be the last to die on the hill of bad medicare.
And Vetrimaaran as head of the village gets Aish's full support. She's a smart and tough woman.
And the only reason we get this absolutely beautiful couple is because... they die. Tragically.
But Vetrimaaran doesn't fulfill that promise because he also dies.
And the second reason we get this lovely couple is because Vetrimaaran isn't the main hero. It's his sons, Maran and Vetri (born months apart but look alike -- and look like their father because they're Vijay avatars too lmao).
They're together in heaven.
If Vetrimaaran were the main hero, we would get a long courting phase, maybe Aish dies and Vetrimaaran goes on a rampage and stuff. But that would be no different from other Vijay's films. The reason he gets to die and reunite with his wife in the afterlife is because he's not the main hero.
Where on earth am I getting with this rambling?
It's just the fact that the only reason we got a good married couple with actual chemistry in a masala action film ... is because they're not the main hero and heroine.
We can argue that Shyam Singha Roy is a mass action film but also not really. Like yes there's action but the focus has always been on the love story between Shyam (Nani) and Rosie (Sai Pallavi). (I'm using them as an example because their chemistry is good. Actually, Nani and Sai Pallavi make a really good on-screen couple. They are both very charming and romantic to each other.)
*Alright, I'm rambling again. I just wanted to express my thoughts on Vetrimaaran and Aishwarya and their lovely chemistry that I don't see often in many mass action films.

Amaran (2024)
My parents took me out to the movies after an exhausting week of exams. I had no idea what were watching, knew nothing about who was starring and absolutely knew zilch about the plot. My mom just told me that she was sure that I'd like the movie very much. And I can tell you now, I liked the movie very much indeed.
The direction and the story-telling were just amazing. Mukund's and Indhu's story was so beautiful to watch. The way their relationship blossomed and how they fought through the hurdles was heart-warming. Knowing how the movie was going to end made all those scenes that much more precious, that much more meaningful. Of course I knew how the movie was going to end. It's a movie based on a soldier in the Indian Army. There was only one place this movie was going and I knew that really well.
Mukund was driven and passionate. His love for the army and his dedication towards serving the country, no matter what anyone else said was inspiring. There was none of that typical Indian film hero-worship, at least not too the extent where it was unrealistic. Whatever was portrayed in the movie in terms of the respect the soldiers had for Mukund, how his family treated him and how his in-laws treated him all did feel quite realistic. That being said, I felt as though the dialogue-writing in some places was just meh? There were many places where the dialogues were flat and just tweaking the words here and there may have made it more resounding? I don't know. That's just my non-expert opinion.
In terms of the acting, Sivakarthikeyan did an okay job. It wasn't spectacular or anything. I've seen other actors emote better. But, he did play his role well. It was nice to see him move away from his comfort comedic-acting to a more serious one such as this. This must have been such a great opportunity for him and I like the growth. Perhaps doing more of such movies will get him the exposure that he needs. His efforts have to appreciated.
Sai Pallavi on the other hand, man, what an actress! She was just so damn spectacular in this film. Every scene that she was in was just such a pleasure to watch. This woman knows how to EXPRESS. She knows how to EMOTE. I laughed with her, I became excited with her, and I cried with her. Honestly, her acting really did carry the movie a good distance. That scene in the bathroom, that scene with the phone call, those last few minutes of the movie, will forever live rent free in my head. She has done such an AMAZING job and I can't wait for her to win awards for her role in this film. She deserves it.
The fact that this movie is based on real-life events, makes it that much more heartbreaking. When the title of the film popped on to the screen, I already had an inkling as to how this movie was going to end. 'Amaran' means 'immortal'. And I can now see why they the named the movie so.
I am and will always be such a sucker for military movies.
Overall, 9.4/10
Docked a few points for the pain and anxiety this movie put me through.
100% would recommend. Will definitely watch again for the plot and for Sai Pallavi and for Sivakarthikeyan (he really is one of my favorite human beings)
I'm gonna go and get my hands on the book that was written about Mukund Varadarajan.
Watched On: 14/11/24
