Biden deserves credit for turning the economy around. This was a front page headline article on the WaPo website for a short time on Sunday Jan. 28th. I didn't see anything about this on The New York Times front page website. The mainstream media should do a better job of conveying this good news about the economy. Certainly, the right-wing media won't do so.

Found some cool clips that debunk the current "tradwife" grift circulating the internet.

Clip 1: Traditional wives were not weak-willed lilies that pined away dutifully, grossly stupid and financially dependent on their husbands... working women, anyway. Clip 2: The tradwife and Red Pill movement don't understand the 1950s. Married women chose to remain in the work force post WWII, which locked the younger women out of jobs. The younger generations then married and had kids early because the economy was good and there was nothing else to do. (Full video here. Obviously, no relationship is perfect; and more obviously, it's a great risk to throwaway the potential of financial freedom and independence on the false dream the trad movement is selling. Not only are they self-employed women masquerading as traditional, but most (not all) are also making a mockery of the hardworking women who juggle their lives, kids, and finances to make a SAHM role work.

At the end of the day, we can only make the best choices for ourselves-- in any area of our lives-- if we're truthfully informed.

In the Ring

Vox Phantasma! Reader, Kara, who, freshly shipped from New York, sneaks out every night to see if she can find fighting rings to test her skills. After all, she had been training for years under the monks at the Order of the Concrete Fist, as a good pupil she couldn't dishonor them by getting rusty.

Obviously, she cannot go out at night as a woman. Luckily, years ago her sister had gifted her a three-quarter dragon mask. It's a red mask depicting a snarling dragon. It juts out beyond her nose, gathers in towards her cheekbones, and splays out to her just beyond her jawline. This mask was no ordinary mask, it was a magical mask crafted by the wizards at the Gramercy Occult Society. It has the ability to physically alter the gender of the wearer. The mask's effects only end when she chooses to take it off, or should it ever break. This way, Kara could escort her sister without breaking the chaperone rules of high society.

The mask can only change one's appearance so much. For Kara, the mask squares her jawline and broadens her shoulders. Her breasts shrink to fit a muscular build, and she loses her feminine curves in place of a traditional triangle body shape.

One night, Kara finds her way to the Barbary Coast fighting pits. She is cocky and confident in her abilities. She has already gone three rounds in the pit when Ah Sahm enters. The masked man in the ring has just won. He is garbed in a vest and a pair of loose-fitting pants.

"Who else will challenge me? Huh?! The man who killed a dragon," Kara yells into the crowd. And Ah Sahm loves a challenge and, on occasion, enjoys putting egotistical people in their place. So, he steps into the pit against the man wearing a red dragon mask.

The two men enter the ring. Immediately, Ah Sahm knows this man is not a boxer, at least not in the way other white men are. He has long loosely curled brown hair that is tied back and his eyes are a striking green. The strange fighter circles him like a martial artist would. Ah Sahm, testing his theory, lets the other fighter attack first.

Kara starts with a quick series of punches all aimed at her opponent's chest and face. Almost all of them are blocked except for a couple of lucky hits to his torso.

Ah Sahm is surprised at the young man's martial abilities. But that doesn't stop him from attacking back. He delivers precise and calculated kicks and punches of his own, in return aiming for his opponent's weak spots and openings. The brunet does his best to block and dodge, but he is quickly tiring. A lucky kick to the chest sends the younger man sprawling backward into the dirt.

"Not so cocky when you have your ass in the dirt," Ah Sahm taunts. He sees the fury flash in the man's eyes.

Instead of dignifying her opponent with a response, Kara growls, pushing herself up and charging. She fiercely kicks her opponent several times. Again, he blocks most of them, except for the lucky one that manages to catch him off guard. It connects with the side of his head, sending him sprawling to the ground. Panting, she puts space between them, in an attempt to recover.

Even though all Ah Sahm can hear is ringing in his ears, he gets up quickly. He can tell when a fight is almost over. He charges. He knows the man is tiring quickly and, even though he could keep up in the beginning, is quite outmatched in comparison. He unleashes an absolute barrage of blows, kicks, and punches against the younger man.

Kara does her best to block but realizes she is outmatched. However, that doesn't stop her from putting up a fight. She goes for a feint, but her opponent dodges her attack. She feels herself getting yanked forward, and a punch landing harshly against the mask before she falls at her opponent's feet.

Her blood runs cold as she feels the mask shatter against her skin. Now in a heap on the ground, the mask falls from her face, and Kara's body reverts to its original feminine shape. The crowd falls silent, just as confused as Ah Sahm.

Ah Sahm watches as the mask falls from his opponent's face and the man transforms into a woman. Had they been a woman the whole time? How could he make such a mistake? How could he have not noticed? He can only stare down at her in surprise. Their eyes meet, and hers are filled with anger and fury. He almost thinks he imagines the grief he sees behind the more volatile emotions.

"You're a...woman?"

Kara can only glare furiously at the man standing over her. She collects as much of the broken mask as she can. Surrounded by men, the grief, anger, and fear are too much. Kara feels her magic and the Umbral Arcana surge in response to her emotions. The wildness inside her responds to her instinctual desire at that moment, the desire to escape.

In an instant, Ah Sahm watches the woman in front of him disappear. He knows he saw her there one instant and gone the next. Logic and his brain tell him she just ran through the crowd, but he knows she saw her there one instant and gone the next. There is no way she pushed her way through the crowd so quickly.

Spoilers ahead

Ah Toy/Nellie/Lai—The beginning of the episode broke my heart all over again. So much death and destruction! Even worse is the rift it caused between Ah Toy and Nellie. Ah Toy blaming Nellie and herself for indulging in this fantasy that was too good to be true. In season 2 she pushed Nellie away because it wasn’t safe in Chinatown. Now she’s pushing Nellie away because it’s not  safe for them outside of Chinatown. Ah Toy leaving after telling Nellie “Happy mean nothing if you are dead.” Fucking hell. 

Chinatown is more dangerous than ever, but it’s Ah Toy’s domain, where she feels in control. Staring in the mirror, covering up her wounds and trauma with makeup, wearing her dress like armor. Back to square one again and it sucks. I agree with Ah Sahm, let’s go after those bastards!We also see the darkness in Lai rising again, poor baby. I guessed that Ah Toy’s line was gonna be the title, “In Chinatown, no one think about forever.” More bad news from Bill when he told her he can’t protect her from the new police chief. Our girl can’t catch a fucking break.

Finally, Nellie is crushed when that judge took her away their land as “imminent domain.” She starting to see the limits of her power as a wealthy white woman, because of sexism duh. The fucking audacity of Dickhead to be like “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Nellie was unhinged and dragged his ass in front of everyone. Flashbacks to Penny and Buckley last season…please don’t throw her in an asylum! It wasn’t surprising that he bribed the judge. If he did that, then what’s the point of attacking the vineyard and killing innocent women?? Male ego and pettiness, that’s what! I hope we’ll see Ah Toy and Nellie  together again next episode. They need each other more than ever now! Ah Toy is understandably shaken, but she’ll get her revenge! I hope they make it slow and painful for Dickhead. Though, I’m worried about his whip-wielding evil henchman.

Hop Wei— This money printing scheme was clearly trouble from the beginning. Especially because YJ wasn’t even trying to be subtle or careful. Still, watching racist cops raid the Hop Wei and beating YJ was beyond awful. Warrior has never pulled any punches regarding the racism and corruption in this era. Which, sadly, still happens today. Bill is starting to grow on me, only because Atwood is so incredibly terrible. If words and spit counts as “assaulting” then he’s a weak ass punk! In the end, YJ is taken away by the police.

Ah Sahm/Yan Mi— Meanwhile, Ah Sahm and Yan Mi are trying to sneak away with the press and evidence. Ah Sahm has to knock out some cops along the way. Very satisfying to watch, after all the shit they were doing to the Hop Wei. Thank Chao for being in right place at the right time. Yan Mi is understandably upset at being dragged into danger like this. On the other hand, they’re a Tong what did you expect? She and Ah Sahm argue, then kiss, then have sex. It’s the second time Ah Sahm had gotten sticky while YJ is having a crisis (FJ nearly dying in season 1). Really curious how this is gonna play out. Ah Sahm doesn’t have the best track record with romance.

Long Zhii—*Sigh* Mai Ling, Mai Ling, Mai Ling. Cockiness is a family trait with her and Ah Sahm, huh. I understand her idea of doing business with white people, but she was getting waaaay too comfortable. Yeah you’re a big deal in Chinatown, but white people will only see you as a Chinese woman. A pity project for them to indulge, or an exotic sexual plaything. Mai Ling had to learn that the hard way. Still, she didn’t deserve to be arrested and deported because of a white man’s lies!

Other Thoughts— Power, who has it, and how they use it is obviously the main theme this season. Marginalized people who cultivate even a little bit power are always at risk of losing it. Rich white men at the top are the real enemies (aka water is wet). Both YJ and Mai Ling are in jail, I wonder what will happen to their tongs. Will they finally establish a common ground after this? How will these characters fight back against a racist and corrupt system? They’ve endured so much pain and trauma in these past episodes. Hopefully things will improve for them later on.

The way people talk about motherhood made me feel like it must be horrible all ever time consuming and not worth it. I had the idea in my head that I would never have kids because of it. I thought I would think of myself as weak going from working two jobs to a sahm. While it’s far from easy I don’t think negatively about it all. Stock markets plunge on US recession fears

Wall Street stocks deepened their losses Monday, and Tokyo had its worst day in 13 years as panic spread across trading floors over fears of recession in the United States.

Wall Street’s tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index tumbled 6.3 percent at the open, with the S&P 500 falling 4.2 percent and the Dow dropping 2.7 percent.

Major European indices were down around three percent in afternoon trading.

Tokyo’s Nikkei sank more than 12 percent on its worst day since the 2011 Fukushima crisis. It also suffered its biggest-ever points loss, shedding 4,451.28.

A weak US jobs report on Friday triggered the market meltdown. The report showed that the unemployment rate reached its highest since October 2021.

The report came two days after the US Federal Reserve decided, as expected, to keep interest rates at a 23-year high while signalling that it could cut them in September.

“Investors are gripped by fears that the Federal Reserve has waited too long to pivot on its policy, especially in light of Friday’s disappointing US jobs data and a slew of other weak economic indicators pointing toward a looming recession,” said market analyst Fawad Razaqzada at City Index and FOREX.com.

Friday’s much-anticipated report showed the US economy added just 114,000 jobs last month, well down from June and far fewer than expected, and unemployment at 4.3 percent.

The news came a day after lacklustre factory data.

Investors fear the Fed’s high rates, which aimed to slash inflation, could be plunging the economy towards a hard landing and recession instead of the soft landing sought by the central bank.

Expectations that the Fed could cut more aggressively than expected starting in September or even be forced into an emergency reduction this month sent the dollar sliding against the yen.

The Japanese currency was boosted also by a Bank of Japan interest-rate hike last week, analysts said.

The dollar went under 142 yen for the first time since January.

Bitcoin, oil retreat

Markets tumbled on Monday, with Brent North Sea crude reaching its lowest level in over six months despite heightened Middle East tensions. Bitcoin slumped more than 10 percent to under $50,000.

“Aside from ongoing worries about a US recession, the continuation of the pressure on markets has been attributed to the unwinding of the yen carry trade and geopolitical fears surrounding an expected Iranian military retaliation against Israel after Israel killed a high-ranking Iranian military official,” said Briefing.com analyst Patrick O’Hare.

Many investors have borrowed at low interest rates in a weak yen to invest in higher-yielding currencies, but the abrupt surge in the yen and interest rate moves are upending the trade.

Some analysts pointed to the “Sahm rule”, which says an economy is in the early stages of recession if the three-month moving average of unemployment is 0.5 percentage points above its low over the previous 12 months. That was triggered by Friday’s data.

O’Hare also noted big falls in tech and semiconductor shares.

That helped fuel sharp drops in Asia markets, and US tech shares also pulled down Wall Street indices.

Shares in AI chip manufacturer Nvidia plunged 14.6 percent at the start of trading on Monday.

Shares in Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta, slumped 7.2 percent.

Microsoft and Google’s parent company, Alphabet’s shares, were down around five percent. 

Commodities under pressure

Commodities, including oil, natural gas, metals and agricultural products, also joined the global sell-off in equities.

Commodities had already taken a hit in recent weeks, weighed down by a sluggish economy in top buyer China, with crude oil down around 5% last week, copper hitting a four-month low on the London Metal Exchange, and corn near its weakest since 2020.

Crude oil dropped around 1 percent on Monday in volatile trade, less than losses on major equity indexes as US recession fears and possible implications for oil demand were somewhat mitigated by price support from rising tensions in the Middle East.

Copper prices tumbled over 3 percent to 4-1/2 month lows as a deteriorating demand outlook in China and the United States, the world’s two largest economies, triggered a sell-off of the metal used in power and construction.

Gold was last down around 2 percent.

European gas, power, and carbon contracts also fell.

European benchmark gas for the month ahead sank around 4% from the previous session, under pressure from panic selling in line with the wider sell-off as well as other factors, according to one trader.

Can Bitcoin’s Whales Prevent a Drop Below $60K for BTC?

Bitcoin [BTC] experienced a swift decline from its resistance zone between $69k-$70k. The weekly timeframe showed a bearish structure, further exacerbated by the FOMC meeting which dispelled bullish hopes for a Fed rate cut in September.

Long-term Holder Sell Pressure Decreases

The $60k region is a significant support zone, but there’s no guarantee that it will hold. On-chain metrics were closely examined to understand the sentiment of long-term holders.

Crypto-analyst Axel Adler noted a reduction in active sales by long-term holders. Compared to early June, the selling pressure from this group was described as “minimal”.

The long-term supply also saw a significant decrease. This suggested intense profit-taking activity when BTC was trading around the $68k-$70k levels, indicating a lack of confidence in a breakout past $70k.

However, this could also be seen as positive news since it implies that selling pressure might be exhausted.
