The serendipity of exploration. The first commandment of photography is simply showing up. You don’t really need to have a goal or purpose in mind, but simply being out there and present sets the stage for magic to happen. It doesn’t always happen, and even when you don’t come away from a photowalk with great images you are still left with the positive and healing experience of being out in nature. But sometimes, magic does happen. One of my favorite memories from Saguaro NP was talking an hour photo walk by myself directly out into a field of giant cacti just as the sun was setting. Wandering in the golden light among these giants was glorious. At one point, several coyotes ran past me, barely paying me any attention. And then I found this hummingbird buzzing around the cacti, and managed to get a nice silhouette shot. The magnificent Saguaro bride, queen of all she surveys, takes her time in growing arms.100 years may pass before deciding to test the air, allowing the first open hand... another fifty, it seems, have proven her faith well rewarded: she appears free and in command, emulating Shiva the transformer, the protector, offering solace and shade, an open embrace for the brave. Recorded within the raindrops and rivulets of the centuries' storming, absorbed by her bodice and heart, over 150 years of the movements of the desert's pulmonary flow... the respiration of the gila, the scorpion, the coyote, and the variant pit vipers coiling in the shade among the zephyrs' cries.
