Really underselling the lyrebird, I have to say. They're among the best vocal mimics in the world - and they mimic more than just animal sounds!

the greater sage-grouse, also known as the sagehen, is north america’s largest grouse species. previously known simply as the sagegrouse, the original grouping has been divided into the greater sage-grouse and the gunnison’s sage-grouse. brushy sage steppe habitats are crucial to conservation of this species; during the majority of the year, their diet is over 60% composed of sage, and the species cannot live in habitats where sage isn’t found growing densely. this unusual bird is also known for complicated lek-based breeding rituals where the male inflates the yellow sacs on his chest to ‘boom’ and strut, sometimes for hours.

The greater sage grouse, which once numbered in the thousands in Western Canada, is coming perilously close to vanishing from the Prairies, new government research shows. Known for its unusual mating dance, the species — found in areas where sagebrush grows — has been endangered for decades. The round-bodied bird is among the species most at risk in Canada. The latest data from government conservationists provides little hope for their future.

The insects and flowering plants that provide protection and essential nutrition for sage-grouse chicks are disappearing. Industrial development, along with impacts such as drought, wildfire, and invasive species that are amplified due to climate change have degraded and destroyed millions of acres of vital sage grouse habitat. You can take action today to help.
Tell the Biden Administration you support plans to protect and restore sagebrush habitat so sage-grouse—and many other species—can survive.

California Sage Grouse, day 23 of #birbfest2024 . I wasn't sure what makes this type of #sagegrouse unique, but I added elements of the #california flag. #Birbfest is hosted by @monkeymintaka this year and created by @birdietam.art #birb @birbfest.challenge

the greater sage-grouse is north america’s largest species of grouse, found primarily in the western united states and portions of canada where sage steppe habitat is plentiful. young sage-grouse move clumsily, and are very vulnerable to predators despite their ability to easily camouflage in most of their habitat due to their mottled brown feathers. at two weeks of age, they are able to fly, though poorly; by ten to twelve weeks of age, they are largely independent.

✨ Mutation March, day 15 - sage grouse ✨
Jabuticaba trees look wild with their fruits that grow directly on the branches, so I thought that would pair well with the sacs of the sage grouse.
