Tumblr media
Chocolate Hills

Travelling is something most of us are hyped to experience. With a lot of good places that we can visit, this could sometimes confuse us. If you are thinking of travelling but is held back because of tight budget or just uncertain for the fear that it might not be worth it, this place is good for you.
Bohol is an island province of the Philippines located in the Central Visayas region. This place  is full of wonders, with its calm vibe,
fresh air and aesthetic nature. Many people are eager to have a visit and enjoy its beauty to the fullest. One of the attractions in bohol is the chocolate hills located in Towns of Carmen, Batuan and Sagbayan, Bohol
MY EXPERIENCE
My family and I spent an entire vacation back in 2022 wandering around bohol. Our first and most memorable stop was at Chocolate Hills. I used to think before that Chocolate Hills was  made up of real chocolates because of its name,  but the fact is that the hills actually change its color into chocolate brown during the dry months that make it look like chocolates. It was lunch time so it was pretty hot when we visited there. The entrance fee was 50 php which is super worth it and affordable. There are a lot of tourists there from all around the world and it was a pretty amazing experience. Stalls are present there as well with their captivating products and souveniers. In fact, I was tempted to buy one. Overall it was a fun and nice travel.
There are a lot to see and witness there at chocolate hills. I highly recommend you to visit and enjoy the beauty of it. I am sure it will be worth your time as well.

Famous Tourist Spots In Bohol
1. Chocolate Hills
Tumblr media
The Chocolate Hills are a geological formation in the Bohol province of the Philippines. There are at least 1,260 hills, but there may be as many as 1,776 hills spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometers. They are covered in green grass that turns brown during the dry season, hence the name.
It's magical, calm, stunning place.
Need to climb stairs to experience stunning view from top. Around 230 steps, there is parking and toilets and some space. Police assistance also available there and ATV rentals also available to experience multiple hills and to roam around in the forest. Totally worth visiting.Often dubbed as an ‘Eighth Wonder of the World,’ Bohol’s Chocolate Hills is a famed tourist attraction which continues to draw attention for its unique and scenic characteristics.
Curious why it’s called the Chocolate Hills when it’s not really made of chocolates? It’s because these hills, which are usually covered in green grass, dry up and turn chocolatey brown in color during the dry season. There are more than a thousand hills spread over an area of 50 square kilometers in the towns of Carmen, Batuan, and Sagbayan in Bohol. And, while the hills do vary in size, looking at these from afar, it seems like they’re almost symmetrical in shape. This results in a majestic landscape that might make you think it’s a man-made creation.
2. Bilar Man Made Forest
Tumblr media
The Bohol Mahogany Forest, more commonly known as the Bilar Man-Made Forest, is a dense forest stretching two kilometers along the border of Loboc and Bilar towns in Bohol. The forest is mainly made up of white and red mahogany trees. It is part of a reforestation project started over 50 years ago.
When one enters the forest, one will notice that the temperature changes abruptly, especially during the hot season. Once one is under the shade of the trees, everything cools down.
The man-made forest’s density is thanks to the consistency in the height of its trees and the considerable spread of their branches. The young trees grow straight up towards the sky, which is largely obscured by the branches and the thick leaves. The roots of the trees are beautiful to view as they extend from the ground and climb over boulders and curve around the land, even reaching the side of the road.
3. Hinagdanan Cave
Tumblr media
Illuminated by natural light, Hinagdanan Cave is majestic. Once the sunlight comes in through the holes on top, you can see the wondrous view of this cave. Also, the stalagmites inside the cave amplify its beauty.
•Beautiful rock formations inside the cave.
This cave is classified as a karst. In other words, it’s made of limestone. To reach the cave, you need to go through some steep steps. And sometimes, the path is slippery. But don’t worry because there’s a metalic railing that you can hold on to if you lose your balance.
4. Loboc River Cruise
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cruise promises an enriched heritage experience. The refurbished boats are fitted with details in the Visayan vernacular architecture. Guests will enjoy a more elegant, culturally attuned journey through the waterway. The boats are now wider. Polished wooden floors, stained glass, capiz, and callado details have been installed on the vessels,”.
Tour operators are accepting advanced bookings, not only for the river cruise but for other tourist destinations in Bohol.
5. Alona Beach
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Located on Panglao Island, there lies a small yet serene stretch of tropical paradise – Alona Beach. This famed tourist attraction quickly became a crowd favorite among local and foreign travelers looking for a relaxing escape from the city. Its wonderful white sand beaches, stunning reefs, and crystal clear waters will surely leave you fascinated.
Why anyone is sure to love this beach?

CHOCOLATE HILLS
Located on the island of Bohol in the Philippines, the Chocolate Hills are a slight mystery to locals and visitors alike. Sometimes called the "Eighth Wonder of the World," the Chocolate Hills are the Philippines' third National Geological Monument, established in 1988, and even appear on Bohol's local flag.
The attraction is exactly what it sounds like: rounded hills located at the center of the tiny island that go brown in color during the dry season so they end up looking like giant chocolate truffles.
Geologists categorize the landforms as "conical karst topography." Layman's terms: these hills are leftover limestone deposits from a time when streams and rivers were far above sea level. Rainfall and other natural water sources slowly created the dips and valleys the island has become so famous for.
For the sake of folklore and everything fun, there are a few other ideas on how this area came to be. One local legend shares the thought that the hills are the aftermath of a fight between two giants who spent days hurling stones at each other before finally giving up. Another idea states that the hills are the tears of a giant grieving the death of a mortal woman he had fallen in love with.
The Chocolate Hills are not very high, ranging from 100 feet to just 165 feet high — though the largest recorded is around 395 feet tall. However, they cover about 20 square miles and can be seen from the towns of Batuan, Sagbayan, Bilar, and Carmen.
The hills are most easily accessed from a 90-minute ferry ride from Cebu to Tagbilaran, the capital of Bohol. You can also fly into Tagbilaran from Manila, or travel to Bohol by boat from Cebu, Manila, Leyte, Mindanao, Siquijor, and Negros.

The Chocolate Hills of Bohol, Philippines
What makes the Chocolate Hills famous?
Curious why it’s called the Chocolate Hills when it’s not really made of chocolates.? It’s because these hills, which are usually covered in green grass, dry up and turn chocolatey brown in color during the dry season. There are more than a thousand hills spread over an area of 50 square kilometers in the towns of Carmen, Batuan, and Sagbayan in Bohol. And, while the hills do vary in size, looking at these from afar, it seems like they’re almost symmetrical in shape. This results in a majestic landscape that might make you think it’s a man-made creation.
The story behind the origins of the pride of the Visayan Region is no exception. According to legends, the hills came into existence because of two feuding giants who hurled rocks, boulders, and sand at each other.
After their fight was over, this eventually led to a huge mess of hills – which is the Chocolate Hills we know today. Another legend claims what really transpired was a heartbroken giant cried a lot of tears which led to the formation of these limestone hills. The third legend though is hard to imagine for some – they say these hills were dried feces of carabaos.
How the hills came to be
Setting aside the three legends mentioned above, the widely accepted geological theory behind this strange formation is that the hills were the result of the weathering of marine limestone. The dissolution of limestone thousands of years ago was affected by several factors, such as rainfall and subaerial erosion. According to a plaque displayed at a viewing deck in the town of Carmen, these geological formations were the result of erosion of limestones which were uplifted above sea level and fractured due to tectonic processes. Another explanation claims that the hills were previously coral reefs that erupted after a geologic shift beneath the waters.
The best time and place to see the Chocolate Hills
Of course, you will want to see the hills when they’re chocolate brown in color – which is the dry season in the Philippines. This season begins in late November and lasts until May. However, it’s still best to check for weather updates when traveling in the Philippines because weather often gets unpredictable.
As for the place where you could get the best view of the hills, there are two areas that should be considered: the viewing deck of the Chocolate Hills Complex in Carmen, and Sagbayan Peak.
