#notizie #news #breakingnews #cronaca #politica #eventi #sport #moda Read the full article

Group Blog Entry 1
Group Blog Entry 1- Nov 5th, 2021
Session included talks from Omari Ashby, Elsa Clarke, and Muhammed Muhwakil.
Omari Ashby, Guest Lecturer on Cultural Research-

Omari Ashby Is a graduate of the University of the West Indies with a PhD in Cultural Studies and masters’ degree in Creative Design Entrepreneurship. He is well accomplished, currently being the Chief Creative Officer of his own clothing brand “Sagaboy Culture”, adjunct lecturer at his former almamater UWI for its DCFA, founder and managing director of Jaliman Entertainment, and more.

He took the time to educate us on Cultural Research, its methods, and clearly explain to us the difference between qualitative research and quantitative research. First, he stated that ‘Research is a form of systematic inquiry that contributes to knowledge’, and that it should question the nature of knowledge itself and how it is known, and specified that cultural research studies how cultural expressions, traditions, rituals, etc. are linked to daily life. He explained how to analyse a topic while researching, pick apart every little detail there is about this topic, and then how to go about putting things together to suit what you researched. He warned us that it is crucial to follow the data and not just your own notion, meaning that you can’t just go off of what you think/feel about a topic, you have to go to different sources of information and make sure what you are saying is true. He made an important point that ‘Good research should be able to be replicated and still arrive at the same result.’ Thanks to this lecture, we now feel like we are properly equipped to conduct our own research in our different individual disciplines in the future. We have especially taken note of the different methods of research that he taught us, particularly ‘group focus discussions’ as some of us take for granted the value in hearing people’s personal opinions and accounts on a subject, and bouncing ideas off of one another.
Elsa Clarke, Guest Lecturer on Visual Arts-

Elsa Clarke has a Fine Art degree from Edna Manley College of the Arts in Jamaica, teaching Certificate and Diploma from Thames Valley College in England, a Masters in Art Education from Ohio State University, and is currently pursuing a PhD. Aside from being a woman with an obvious thirst for knowledge, she is a successful self- employed artist and educator, she also specified that she prefers artiste’ to ‘teacher’. She is primarily a painter, however she is not afraid to try different mediums.

In our lecture, Ms. Clarke spoke about herself and the experience she has had in the art industry. “I use art as a tool for community development and social work”’ she said and also explained that she gets her inspiration from all life experiences. We had the absolute pleasure of her sharing some of her work throughout the years with us, and it was awesome to see how many different ways art can be presented. She mentioned how she sometimes uses materials that she hadn’t even bought for art, encouraging us to be innovative and out-of-the-box. Ms. Clarke also expressed to us how much emotion plays apart in art making, though this statement was more so pointed towards the visual art students but the rest of us believe that this advice can be taken into our individual fields as well. However, she told all of us to “always have a pencil in hand to keep working.” Her ending words of wisdom were “Always be authentically yourself, live as honest as possible” along with “Try not to miss opportunities, doors will always open, but not all doors you can go back to” which were very inspiring.
Muhammed Muhwakil, Guest Lecturer on Music

Last but not least, our final guest lecturer was Muhammed Muhwakil. Muhwakil is a musician, who only realized it later on in his life/career. He is a member and lead vocalist of the Freetown Collective which is a “music space” that dabbles in many different genres of music like hip-hop, soca, jazz blues and more.

Muhwakil’s session was more relaxed than the others, and was more like an open conversation. He instantly brought a sense of peace to the class when he told us to close our eyes, and sang a song he wrote. He told us his story of hard times he experienced when people didn’t believe in him when he said he wanted to do music. Unfortunately, this caused him to try things like technical engineering instead, but he soon realized that it was not for him and decided to go for his dream without thinking about failing. Now he is happy doing what he loves and is trying to make a difference, “No one can change the world, but I’m still trying by making positive music for the youth and elders” he says. This story was inspiring, encouraging us to go for what we love, regardless of whether others may not support it. We also appreciate his vulnerability. He shared many encouraging and inspirational quotes in the session such as “allow your fear to pass over you, not through you” “be true to yourself” and “no artist starts as a master”. Finally, he ended the lecture with another song and a poem as requested. His lecture was very enjoyable and he presented himself as a very humble man, putting aside his fame and accomplishments. He showed us how to be free-spirited.
