December 13th is the feast day of St. Lucia of Syracuse, patron saint of the blind, who was said to maintain her sight after losing her eyes. Some say they were taken as part of her martyrdom torture. Others say that Lucia, wanting to remain single and serve the less fortunate, gouged them out herself and gave them to the man she was once engaged to as a parting gift because he found them so beautiful. In Sweden, St. Lucia is portrayed by young girls in white dresses with red sashes and candle crowns worn on the head head. She's also honored with these, St. Lucia buns! The recipe I used is from "Kirsten's Cookbook: A Peek at Dining in the Past with Meals You Can Prepare Today" from The American Girls' Collection. Kirsten Larson and her family moved from Sweden to Minnesota in the 1840s. I didn't read her series as a kid, but I did when I was older and started to get into my Swedish heritage. A holiday with many influences This Lucia celebration only became common in the 1950s.

But historically, lucia is a much older holiday than that and also one of the most diverse traditions in Sweden with a motley background with several influences.

Some elements are an Italian saint, medieval carnivals, a Neapolitan boat song and a feast day in Western Sweden. The celebration originates from several eras, places and religions, and over the years has been both simple and lavish, playful and serious, innocent and indecent, sacred and profane, folk and aristocratic, private and public.

The night of Lucia, the longest night of the year, was mostly associated with dangers and supernatural beings. Lucia Day also provided an opportunity to predict the coming year. Some believed the light would scare away the supernatural.

In northern Sweden there are legends (preserved by the Nordic Museum) that tell that Lucia was a mountain goddess who led the supernatural beings that were in motion on Lucian night.

From the 18th century, Lucia is dressed in white In the higher classes, however, during the 18th and 19th centuries, there was a celebration that is somewhat similar to our time. The oldest evidence of a white-clad Lucia wooing in the morning is from the year 1764 at Horns, at wealthy familys estate in Västergötland. Lucia then had angel wings and carried candlesticks in her hands.

The tradition we associate with today's Lucia celebration originates from 19th-century Western Sweden, where Lucia Day was a day of celebrations.

Traditions, religion, folklore and superstition in a great mix is the background of our Lucia celebrations today. Today she comes and sings, bring with her light and offers lussekatter (saffronbuns).

December is here and the wife was feeling julig so she baked saffron buns which are a Swedish yuletide treat. We also got the Yule goats (julbockar) out - a Swedish tradition which some people speculate are related to the goats which draw Thor's chariot. Nelle città si organizzano sfilate con bambine vestite in tuniche bianche con una cintola di seta rossa e l’immancabile corona di candele in testa. ⁣ ⁣ La tradizione vuole che Santa Lucia porti la luce nella giornata più buia dell’anno scacciando gli spiriti malvaggi e aprendo la strada all’avvento della luce divina. Proprio per questo si usa preparare dolci allo zafferano fino a Natale, come augurio di luce.⁣ ⁣ Per festeggiare al meglio, quest’anno ho pensato di realizzare dei bun allo zafferano farciti con un golosissimo strato di marzapane al cardamomo🤩. Vi assicuro che il connubio delle due spezie è davvero strabiliante! Praticamente parliamo di incrocio all’ennesima potenza tra un Lussekatt e un Kanelbullar.⁣ ⁣ Se amate sperimentare con la cucina e vi divertite a osare con le spezie vi assicuro che questi dolcetti sono spaziali e fanno al caso vostro.
