It is so surreal to me that I got to me THE Ali Hazelwood while she was on her US book tour for “Love, Theoretically” and y’all, she is just the sweetest human being!!! She gave me a friendship bracelet 😭 and during the signing, I had the chance to give her this Aliverse sweatshirt my sister and I made. 

Her books mean the absolute world to me because I feel more connected to my sister, who is studying neuroscience, through them. Ali writes in a way that makes the world of STEM easier for me to understand and for that, I will be forever grateful. 

I absolutely LOVED “Love, Theoretically,” so make sure to watch this space for my review later this week 👀 It might just be my favorite Ali Hazelwood book yet! What is your favorite book from the Aliverse?

I like Black Butler, even the second anime season, and I don't mean the ship, I mean THIS:

Heh. Decisions were made. But, what happened there, because reasons, is a demon took two people with similar experiences and scrambled them together for a snack.

Mordecai has just accidentally scrambled Erik's experience of being sicker than a dog in a bathtub with ice (see here) and his memory of Alba's experience (see here). And now Erik has no idea he almost died calling gods. They aren't in contact with the Rainbows and they don't have John's notes. David sure ain't gonna tell 'em. This little misunderstanding is not going to get cleared up for quite some time! But I'm sure it'll be fine.

And we got a little musical scene! I'm parodying The Music Man. Harold Hill arrives in Iowa and is perfectly nice to everyone, but they're not nice to him. Maggie arrives in Zadrakarta and does the opposite. I quit embedding YouTube at the site due to ads - those are a real mood-killer, but I'll embed the reference here.

Maggie's gone a bit Soap Box Sadie and made some people uncomfortable without doing much to improve the general situation. Given that she's sided firmly with Zanzamin, I can't expect her to keep a lid on it, but going off on a low-level idiot doing his job only scares him and frustrates you. Not unlike her mother screaming at everyone who thinks a solitary lady in glasses could use some help with her bags.

But she helped me with the world-building! Yay! There's more than one way to deal with a magic storm, and this isn't the only one we're going to see on this trip. I really hope it's not a frustrating, exposition-heavy diversion from the plot you're expecting. I'm trying to keep it fun! I was hoping to get them home faster than this, but there are one or two things they need to do outside of San Rosille. I think they'll be home by the end of Volume 14. I hope. I have no idea how long it's gonna take to write and put it up, but I'm aiming for two more six-packs on the road and then HOME.

I updated the Setting page for Farsia, and they'll only be there for 2 instalments, so grab that now while it's relevant! (And I'll probably post it on the main blog. I'm proud of myself.) Farsia would love to get involved in that nasty business in Prokovia, and vacuum up ALL the refugees, but they'd need evidence and Erik's little group has none. For now.

Erik will be taking care of some significant (I swear!) business in the next one, which is going up near his birthday and mine - although it's springtime in Zadrakarta. Then it's off to Zanzamin! Farsia's fun but we have a lot more to do in Zanzamin! Have a happy holiday and I'll see you there!

How do you listen to ambient? I assume you can't really actively listen to it so do you do it while doing something else or do you just like, zone out or something?

Great and Wise Brian Eno once said, "Ambient music is intended to induce calm and a space to think. Ambient music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting."

I believe you can actively listen to ambient. Many albums are concept albums, where you have to listen to each track in order, pay attention to each noise and the title in order to get a grasp on the story the music is trying to tell. Deep Frieze is about someone dying of hypothermia, I’ve Called Off The Search, I Know Exactly Where You Are is someone trying to find their missing loved one. Given the slow nature of these songs, I don’t doubt someone would listen to it while engaged in something else to not become too bored. I used to do this while playing Subnautica.

Some, I do just lay in bed, close my eyes, and let the music wash over me in total focus. I did this back when I was into EATEOT fan projects.

Meanwhile some tracks are more just for calm listening. This was the original intent of Erik Sadie’s music, before Eno changed the genre to be more meaningful. I definitely put ambient on when studying or doing homework, something to fill the silence without being too distracting.

Erik can apologize all he wants, but to quote her rebel leader—she’d just as soon kiss a Wookiee.

Not even the most sophisticated of Sadie’s superstitious rituals could have predicted such a disastrous reunion. But while she refuses to acknowledge the siren call of Erik’s steely forearms or the way his voice softens when he offers her his sweater, Sadie can’t help but wonder if there might be more layers to her cold-hearted nemesis than meet the eye. Maybe, possibly, even burned bridges can still be crossed….

premise: hannah arroyo swore it didn't seem like a bad idea at the time, going out in the artic on her own to complete her project, but she finds herself stranded in the snow. the only person who can save her before she may freeze to death just happens to be ian floyd, the same guy she's declared her rival after their first, rather steamy, meeting turned sour.

review:

ali hazelwood brought it home in this last installment of the steminist novellas in a really cute way. ian and hannah have a really cute relationship that feels so warm and has so much fun banter against the really cold setting. their connection and chemistry is palpable from the start and much like the previous two novellas, hannah has good reason to hate ian with what she thinks she knows about him. i think that one of my favorite parts of ali hazelwood books is how much of a voice she gives her characters and you can really picture them so much more vividly because of it.

compared to the other two novellas in this collection, i feel like hannah and ian are one of the weaker couples however. i loved liam and mara and i did really enjoy sadie and erik but something about ian and hannah felt lacking amongst the pages in comparison. they connected a lot about their careers and i wish there had been a small bit more personal connection to really solidify them as a more comparable couple.

spoilers: my favorite part of the book is hands down the end where we see the couples all come together. i think that the connection the boys clearly have is so so sweet and i would love to read a novella or even a book that is all three couples together because i think they have such a fun connection amongst them and the girls and guys are all so cute.

my ratings:

Being here with Ian is more like hearing a song I’ve listened to millions of times, this time with a new arrangement.

Loathe to Love You by Ali Hazelwood

Under One Roof

Is it a masterpiece? No. Did I eat it up like the little love gremlin I am? Of course, I did. Being a novella, there are quite a few unanswered questions. Who is Emma? Did Liam change jobs? Why isn’t Mara close to her family? Plus, the spicy scene could’ve used a little more explicit consent, in my opinion. At the end of the day, it’s a good enemies to friends to lovers story! It was a quick, fun read that I thoroughly enjoyed :)

Stuck With You

I really liked the plot of this one! I’m sure it’s difficult to write a novella that has good plot AND good sex, but Ali Hazelwood never fails! The epilogue left a bit to be desired, but I loved this story overall! Sadie and Erik are a cute pair, and I loved the soccer banter.

Below Zero

It might just be the proximity bias, but I think Below Zero was my favorite of these three novellas. I liked how Ian didn’t want to have sex with Hannah without taking her to dinner first. However, I didn’t really think it was his place to veto her project without talking to her first. He could’ve easily explained himself before doing so! And Dr. Merel being evilly negligent wasn’t super plausible to me. I did love how Ian saved Hannah from the crevasse hehe

In the bonus chapter at the very end, I love how Mara, Sadie, Hannah, Liam, Erik, and Ian are all best friends, and everyone is happy in their respective relationships!
