James glanced out at the yard, looking past the people mingling around the patio and garden. He doesn’t find the person he’s looking for- it’s too dark for that- but he has a suspicion.

James turns to Katie Pettigrew and snaps his fingers in front of her face to get her attention. She turns, scowling at him.

“What do you want, Jay?”

“Have you seen Pete around?”

There’s a glint of recognition in the younger girls eyes and she nods. “Willow tree at the back of the yard, his usual.”

James grins at Katie and ruffles her hair. “Thanks.”

James slips past the wall of people, and jogs over the grass to where the massive willow tree sits at the back of his yard. It was planted years ago, shortly after the house was built, and is a favourite spot for the marauders to hang out in.

“Peter!” James calls up, standing at the base of the tree.

Peter looks down, stony expression melting away. “Hi prongs. Come up?”

“You betcha.” James responds, already starting to scale the tree.

James pulls himself up onto the branch, settling in next to Peter. He flings an arm around his lovers shoulders and draws him closer, smacking a kiss to his temple.

“How are you, my love?” James mutters

Peter reaches up to where James’ hand hangs over his shoulder and laces their fingers together, leaning into James.

“Tired.” Peter says in response, not turning to look at him.

James hums in response, he knows the feeling. The war feels like it’s going to stretch on forever. Sometimes James wakes up and wishes that someone, anyone, would give up so that they could rest.

It’s exhausting always being viligent, wondering who will die next, who amongst your loved ones you will never see again. He’s tired of the mere idea of not being able to trust those around him. It goes against his every instinct to be mistrustful, every fibre of his being wanting to believe there’s good in everyone.

Though, no one can remain good in a war. He’ll come out of this with blood on his hands, no matter which side wins.

The question is- will it be worth it? will the late nights, the panicked phone calls, the deaths all be worth it? Or will he look back and wish he could’ve done something, anything, differently?

“Kind of fucked we’ve got a spy in our ranks. They should make us all to vertisiam or something.” James speaks, breaking the silence that had settled over them.

Peter stiffens against him, he doesn’t like talking about Phoenix stuff outside of the meetings. Not many of them do.

“I’m so tired, Jamie.” Peter whispers, almost like he’s pleading.

James’ heart breaks for his fiancé. “C’mere Pete, I’ve got you. You can rest now.”

Peter relaxes back into James, turning his face into the crook of James neck. James strokes his hand through Peter’s hair soothingly, hoping that he can feel how much James loves him in the small caresses.

unrequited prongstail is slowly killing me tbh because them loving eachother so much when they were younger but then just 'we're too young to love' so they fall apart, painful warm feelings like fresh blood still on their tongues. I JUST CAN'T-

thinking about peter and remus talking to each other about their crushes on james and sirius, both believing they'll never like them back.

then sirius and remus get together.

so peter thinks maybe he might actually have a shot, and james keeps hugging him and holding his hand, and they find themselves hanging out just them a lot more. so peter makes a move, but james shoots him down.

and things become a little weird in the group after that, so peter pretends he's over james, that he's moved on, that it was just a small crush and he was never in love with him or anything.

peter watches as james starts dating the love of his life, watches as all his friends end up with someone. and all he can think is, 'this isn't fair. why do they deserve love and i don't?'

When I started shipping them

literally just randomly said "here me out,,," on a discord server a couple of months ago and proceeded to rant as if i had prior thoughts. i did not, but i did cook in the rant.

My thoughts

ohhhh i love them !!! i love them !!! it's soft, it's comfortable, it's a barrel of miscommunication and unknowing pining, it's forced proximity and it's whispered late night chats over games of chess, walks to the kitchen and exchanging study notes. it's so natural and soft, but with bumps as they learn to talk, to allow themselves to take up space and UGH. love. it's also two people who don't know how to talk about feelings forced to come to terms with feelings and two people with a lot of secrets, one of them better at keeping them than the other

What makes me happy about them?

the understanding. i've always seen pete as a people watcher, and the person you go to for advice. i know we typically say james for that but i think he's more reassurance and love whereas pete - chessmaster - plays out each possibility and indicates what moves you have. and i think remus needs that, longsss for it really. someone who just sees him and understands him. and then for pete it's remus' stability. he'll put on a frown and say he's too tired for whatever pete suggests, but he'll give in anyway and they both know it.

What makes me sad about them?

the secrets. the idea that pete could see him so easily but he didn't see the betrayal coming. the idea that remus took pride in the fact that whilst most people over looked pete, he couldn't look away but his vision was obscured anyway. the GRIEFFFF of thinking sirius killed him, and the GUILTTTT at finding out it was the other way. ugh.

Things done in fics that annoy me? -> haven't read any, they exist in my mind (i'm still writing your gift of them do not fear 🤭)

magical au: hogwarts professors (herbology/runes and DADA). they don't share a quarters but you just knowww if you're knocking on the head of gryffindor's door at any point, pete's head is popping up in the background. they defo prank each other (remus put a sticking spell on all the plantpots once, and hid pixies in a soil bag. pete - people watcher and also the kids love him - 100% gets them all together to play a prank in remus. thinking HAHAHA i'm thinking the boggarts and he tells the class beforehand like "psst,,, did you know professor lupin wears a fluffy dressing gown every night?" and remus is like 🧍🏻‍♂️ when all his students use that to dispel the boggart 😭)

In a universe with prongstail (as a multishipper, my hcs shange depending on the fic), I imagine that Peter started having a massive crush on James in their childhood (I like the hc of them being neighbours and thus childhood friends), which extended over the years. James was just so kind. And Pettigrew didn't have many more friends. Probably wouldn't be friends with Sirius and Remus if it wasn't for Potter.

Pete never expected James to like him back, and probably never confessed, believing he wasn't good enough for him. He would get sad seeing his crush dusting other people but never angry.

Perhaps his reasoning as to why James would never see him that way was because of how he looked (internalised fatphobia). However, Potter fell head over heels for Lily, who is also big and chubby. But then again, she's a girl. James is straight. Except this proves to be untrue, since Prongs fell for another boy, Regulus Black. So there's really no excuse. Wormtail just isn't special.

If James knows that Peter has a crush, I can see him messing with the smaller boy. It's all in good fun in his point of view. Harmless. Like little inside jokes, comments, smirks... Things others don't exactly catch up on (no one really knew of the crush). Wormy knows it's all teasing. James is clear about not having feelings. He can be a bit cruel, at times. Might even kiss the poor marauder if bored, relishing in the attention.

Perhaps it did contribute to Pettigrew's ultimate treason. I do think that his main motive was fear of death. But playing into this story, I can imagine him getting hurt with his best friend's games, using Peter for his pleasure and entertainment without much care for the effect it would have on him. Peter's sentiment of gratitude and admiration turned into resentment and disappointment, you could argue it even became revengeful.

rereading snape's worst memory:

severus is writing A LOT more than the other students around him, so like. he probably does try super hard in all his exams, but defence is clearly one of his favourites i think from this. like he's writing super small and still filling out a lot of the parchment, so he's got a lot to say about the subject, plus he's writing like really fast without stopping

if james is only a short distance away from severus and sirius is in the same row as james, does this mean exam tables aren't set up in alphabetical order? people just sit where they want or something? weird

james' hair is described as messy like 5 times by harry. i don't think we focus on that enough.
