Tbh, if they didn't have a million different pre-conceived notions about each other already, I feel like Apple and Dexter would've been really close friends.

Think about it. Both are the odd ones out in their family, both have glasses that they were made to feel insecure about, both have a different hair colour from their relatives so they stick out even more. They just react to their situations differently. Dexter shrinks into the background and tries to play off his insecurities by making them unimportant. He pretends not to be bothered by it, but it does bother him. Apple, meanwhile, tries to pretend her imperfections aren't even there. She's constantly going on about how perfect she is, playing her role to a T and making sure everyone knows that, but still the knowledge of how she stands out gnaws away at her.

Like if Apple and Daring hadn't been caught up in their "we're totally destined for each other" schtick, I could easily see Dexter and Apple being besties.
