Week One
In my room I have a small collection of hockey pucks. There are three of them, facing out towards me. The first one I purchased was while I was on band tour my freshman year of college. We went on tour of Texas and spent a little while in Dallas. Dallas was such a bright, clean city, you could almost eat off the pavement. Families were bustling around everywhere and children played in fountains. Dallas almost felt like a different world to me, completely safe and bright and airy. I have been a hockey fan since I entered high school. I told my friend Ayla this and made sure to get her to come with me to the Dallas Stars store downtown. This began my quest to try to collect hockey pucks. The one I selected was pretty basic and it currently stares back out at me to this day. Silver, green, white, black. Dallas Stars written around the perimeter. A large D in the center surrounded by a green star. Whenever I see it I think of how clean and beautiful the city of Dallas was. I think of the bright day I spent with my close friend in a city that we had never been.
Fast forward to summer of 2018 and a few of my friends from a different college wanted to take a roadtrip down to Nashville. I went to Nashville while I was in high school on another band trip, but this would be my first time driving there as an adult on a vacation. The puck brings back memories of Johnny Cash, country music, Elvis, and lots of jazz music. Very similarly to being in Dallas, I knew Nashville had a hockey team so I made my two friends stop there while we were heading downtown so I could get a puck for my collection. This one is blue, gold, white, and screams Nashville. The logo on the front has a guitar pick, even. The puck brings me back to just that moment, a fun weekend trip where we packed in a whole experience into two short days.
My final puck is my most recent acquisition. Last spring I was fortunate enough to be selected to attend a conference in Vancouver, BC with two others. This was an all expense paid trip right before finals, so it really wasn’t the ideal time to head out there, but I wanted to take in what I could about the study of ethnobiology and what came along with it. I’m sort of crazy about Canada, so I knew going in that we were going to stop at the hockey pro shop. The crazy thing about Vancouver is that it was also so different than any other place I had really been. We were there before summer really kicked off, even, so the days were very temperate and enjoyable. Redwood trees thrived and the outdoors was truly alive here, unlike any other place I had ever been. While selecting pucks for myself, I chose a game puck that was entirely white with purple saacents. It was for cancer awareness. This was near and dear to my heart so I knew I had to select this one, with the gorgeous pastel purple, to come home with me.
i think this reveals I really enjoy traveling and collecting kind of meaningless items. And hockey pucks are not the most meaningless item I collect, for sure. The crazy thing about this is that my team is actually the Chicago Blackhawks, and I have never been down there to collect a puck for my collection. So one day, I’ll take a trip down there to complete the collection, but for now I will likely be collecting other pucks that are not Chicago, as it has become a very on brand thing for me to do. I really enjoy it and it’s something that not a whole lot of people know about me.
