A/N - Henry has the same hair as he did in HD S5

A woman with black hair was sat at a bar counter, rubbing her arm consciously. Another woman sat down next to her, flexing her robotic fingers on her right hand.

“Long time no see, Nebula.” Turning round, the first woman showed she had a black, navy and gold domino mask covering her eyes, an entire, full-body suit of the same colour covering the rest of her. A warm smile made its way onto her mouth, a laugh following.

“Nice to see you too, Eryn.” ‘Nebula’ grinned, inducing a laugh from Eryn and hugging her.

“How about we go somewhere where you can take your mask off?”

“The Omega might be a good place.” They walked through the streets of their city, Automotropolis, which we’re alive with kids flying about in hoverboards. Going into an alley, Nebula tapped some bricks on the wall, opening up a chute which they slid down, arriving in a very high-tech cave. Sitting down at the comfy sofa, Nebula took her mask off, revealing a woman with wavy black hair down to her waist, sharp and smart blue-green eyes peeking out, rosy red cheeks, only lightly tanned skin and a defined facial structure. This person was none other than Luna de Silva, Chapa de Silva’s older sister and former sidekick of Captain Man, Miss Danger.

“So, what d’you want to talk about, Eryn?” Luna asked, tapping the auto snacker and taking out a frappucino.

“I got a message that was probably meant to be delivered to you. Someone named… Bose?”

“No clue who he is.”

“He was saying stuff about Chapa and a rando called Ray-”

“Chapa and Ray?!” Luna’s head immediately whipped round, grabbing a watch from Eryn’s wrist. Tapping it twice, a small holograph appeared of a chat screen, where a couple of messages were shown.

“Ray’s my previous boss. Captain Man. Chapa is my sister, but who’s Bose?”

“Are you talking about the Captain Man who you fought and indestructible villain with and nearly died by falling off a blimp?!”

“The very same.” Eryn walked towards Luna, grabbing the watch from her with her robot hand, brown eyes warning.

“You can’t go back.”

“Why not, oh great Mecha?”

“Going back to…”

“Swellview.”

“Yes, that place, is too dangerous. You were so damaged that we had to put that stabiliser in your arms.” Luna looked at her arms, frowning.

“I didn’t get the bruises from that! I fought off a supernatural terrorist attack and things got out of control.”

“Lu, darling, as much as I want you to go back into the big leagues, Automotropolis is the best place for you. It had high-tech villains and you can get repairs here. No one repairs devices such as yours like we do. If, by any chance, you get injured, then no one can help you.” Eryn warned, caramel skin tinged red with worry. Her silky blue hair bounced as she followed Luna around, who was tapping her neck, retracting her suit into a necklace.

“Look, if you don’t want me to go, I won’t. But right now, I’m going to fend off some robbers on Synth Street.”

“Without your suit?”

“Ah, right, shouldn’t have deactivated that.” Tapping her necklace again, her suit faded onto her, a mask slotting out of her wrist so she could put it on.

“I’ll see you around, Eryn.” Unbeknownst to her friend, she picked up a backpack when she was leaving, containing all the things she’d need for Swellview. Luna had lied about not going and even the robbers, walking towards the border of Automotropolis, finding a guard at the border. Left wrist facing up and right wrist facing down, she knocked them together and showed it to the guard, her ID showing up on a holograph. The guard nodded, letting her through while a Tesla drove up by itself towards her, allowing her to get in and drive off. However, she got a call from Eryn, which she picked up.

‘WHAT THE HECK, LUNA?!’

“Eryn, let me explain-”

‘THERE IS NOTHING TO EXPLAIN! YOU AGREED TO STAY AND I JUST FOUND OUT THAT PEOPLE SAW YOU LEAVING AUTOMOTROPOLIS!’

“I have a valid reason why. I checked my messages and Chapa and the guys, Danger Force is their name, they really need my help. So I’m off to help them, like any logical person would do.”

‘But you’re not Captain Man’s sidekick anymore! You’re meant to be Luna de Silva, a hip hop dancer from Automotropolis who happens to be a major superhero! Not Miss Danger!’

“You’re trying to be a good friend and keep me safe, but I’m fine. I’ll come back in one piece, I promise.”

‘I’m trying to make sure you don’t make the same mistake you did last time by trusting Kid Danger. You fell off a blimp!’

“You have reminded me of that fiasco many times. I didn’t even get hurt! I fell into the Jandy River!”

‘That’s even worse?!’

“Worse than falling onto pavement?”

‘YOU COULD’VE DROWNED!’

“Eryn, I don’t get why you’re preventing me from going. Is there something I don’t know about?”

‘Hart’s coming from Dystopia, and I have a bad history with most of the people there. He might be one of them.’

“I can handle Henry Hart. Don’t worry. Stay safe, Mecha.” Cutting the call, Nova sighed, going on her way to Swellview.

About six hours later, she pulled up in Swellview, looking round at her old home with a strong nostalgic feeling. Then she tapped her watch, pulling out schematics of the city and scanning it for the largest EMP in the city, finding it to be at the top of Swellview mountain. About twenty minutes later, she arrived at the Man’s Nest, tapping her watch.

“Broken into the security system, and… shutdown lights.” On cue, the lights shut down, initiating shouts and yelps from the inhabitants. Moving in, she saw Ray perk up and let out a loud screech.

“SOMEONE’S HERE! EVERYBODY… PROTECT ME!”

“ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! WE’RE PEOPLE TOO!” Mika felt someone behind her, so she tried to land a punch, but Luna’s reflexes kicked in and she grabbed her hand, bringing her elbow down on Mika’s. Miles heard the scuffle and teleported towards them, but Luna sweep kicked him while Bose looked around in fright. Chapa tried to look for the light switch, like any normal person would do, while Ray tried to man up and went towards the commotion, kicking thin air but his fist landed in someone’s grip, and with a chicken-like shriek, was flipped over effortlessly and landed with a yell on the floor. The lights turned back on, revealing Chapa at the light switch, Miles, Ray and Mika on the floor and Henry on a pole, high up and clinging on for dear life. They spotted Luna, who was clapping slowly with a smirk on her face.

“These guys are the next gen! Maybe your grandpa skills aren’t working out, Ray.” The kids stared at Luna in confusion, but Ray and Henry found a sense of familiarity in the female voice. When she took off her mask, tutting. “Don’t even recognise your old teammate, huh?” The familiar face sprang a smile on Ray’s face, the man-child going to hug his former sidekick. Normally.

“How’re you doing, you big baby?”

“I’m doing great now that you’re here. It’s been so long since the old gang have been standing in one room, eh?” Luna looked at Henry, who shuffled his feet and looked down. Things ended awkwardly between them, and neither of them wanted to talk about it.

“Wait.” Chapa interrupted, “Who are you?”

“It’s been a while, I’ll admit. I’m your sister, Chapa. Luna de Silva.”

s11 episode 1 review

Hello, I’m back with my weekly recaps that nobody asked for! Like last season I’ll be posting my thoughts about the episode and tooting and booting the runway looks. Since this was the first week I’m gonna go queen by queen and reveal my initial impressions of them and toot and boot their entrance and runway look.

Akeria: Quieter than I thought she’d be so I don’t have too much of a first impression on her personality, but her runway was fucking sickening! She seems like a talented queen so I’m excited to see what she brings!

Entrance look: Toot. A bit safe but not bad at all.

Runway look: TOOT! That hair was fucking insane and her outfit was super cool too. She clearly knows her way around a sewing machine!

Ariel: Honestly so far she gives me bratty millennial instagram queen, she says she can perform but we will see if that holds up. I hope her personality doesn’t get on my nerves this season, but I’m glad she kept it real with Silky. If she stirs up some drama I may warm up to her.

Entrance look: Toot! She looked really pretty and I was happy that her face actually translated well from instagram. Bonus points for the Hilary Duff ref

Runway look: Safe toot. It was well made and definitely gave me Laganja, but it was essentially just a body suit. Nothing super exciting

Brooke: MY FUCKING CANADIAN QUEEN. She was so good this week, she kept to herself and owned the challenge like a motherfucking boss. She’s definitely a quieter queen so I hope she doesn’t get the Mayhem/Kameron/Naomi edit and totally disappear throughout the whole season. I want her to be that cocky shady bitch this season, clocking bitches that deserve it.

Entrance look: Toot! Come though Canadian pride! She’s so polished

Runway look: TOOT!!! Her outfit looked like something she brought from home, I believe she made it in like a day. Also that material is extremely hard to work with so you know this bitch is skilled

Honey: Honestly I was kinda disappointed this episode, I really expected her to turn it out with the cool looks I’ve seen from her so far and both of her looks were just kinda meh. Hopefully she steps it up.

Entrance look: Boot. The padding was weird, looked liked she stuffed hams up her dress

Runway look: Safe toot. It wasn’t horrible but wasn’t anything exciting. Like I said, I expected more based on her previous looks

Kahanna: Didn’t give too much of an impression beyond her bad outfit. Wasn’t a fan of her crying and excuses she made on the runway, like your outfit was bad girls just own up to it. He’s a hot dude though, and she turned out the lip sync pretty well.

Entrance look: Boot. The tits looked weird and her body looked boxy. It just wasn’t flattering

Runway look: BOOT. The whole thing was blah and messy. The stoned tights that didn’t go all the way up, it was just a bra and a belt. Boot.

Mercedes: She is extremely beautiful, kinda gives me Mariah a little, but she’s a lot quieter than I thought she’d be. And it seems like her makeup wasn’t ready for HD tv. Happy she stayed though.

Entrance look: Top toot! It was absolutely gorgeous! She looked expensive.

Runway look: Safe toot. I don’t think the actual look was bad, but she didn’t sell it and her makeup wasn’t great.

Nina West: I really like her as a queen, and she seems like a nice person, but that outfit was horrid. Although I was glad she owned up to her lack of sewing skills but still made an attempt, but more crying on the runway was not the one. I’m sure she’ll do well in the acting/comedy challenges

Entrance look: Toot! Kinda reminded me of Detox on s5. It fit her well and she looked beautiful.

Runway look: BOOT. It was really bad, and those shoes! I can hear Raven’s boot from miles away.

Plastique: Very pretty girl but didn’t make much of an impression tbh. Hopefully she doesn’t turn out to be another boring but pretty queen.

Entrance look: Toot. A classic silhouette, hopefully its not the only one she wears

Runway look: Safe toot. It was really pretty but gave me more Valentina than Sasha. Again a similar silhouette. She looked beautiful though!

Ra’jah: Girl I could not with those god damned earrings. Just take them off! She hasn’t made that much of an impression yet either, apart from those earrings.

Entrance look: Toot! I liked the newspaper outfit, very creative. Not crazy about the hair though

Runway look: Toot. It was a bit basic but it was still well made and her hair on the runway was much better than her entrance

Scarlet: I don’t know what it is but I am not feeling her as of right now!? That entrance look was a straight-up mess and I wasn’t really feeling her runway look or her attitude either. Talking shit when you look like that? Girl no.

Entrance look: BOOT. Nothing else needs to be said. Pants bitch

Runway look: Boot. I don’t know, when she got Violet’s box I was expecting so much more. This was really basic to me and I’m not a fan of the way she paints.

Shuga: I like her! She didn’t make a huge impression but for some reason I was drawn to her. Both of her looks were solid and she seems like a bitch who doesn’t put up with a lot of shit.

Entrance look: Toot! One of my favorites. I really liked the wig and the sparkly bodysuit fit well and looked good.

Runway look: Toot! At first I wasn’t sure because it didn’t really give me Sharon, but the challenge was more to do their own style and I like the Ouija board she sneaked into her hair.

Silky: Look, I get why the queens were calling her annoying, she was doing a little bit too much for TV, but I’m definitely not writing her off completely. I think she’ll be a good personality this season if she tones it down juuust a little bit.

Entrance Look: Toot. It fit her well and she looked great!

Runway look: Soft toot. Wasn’t my favorite outfit of the night but better than I was expecting based on the episode. I don’t think it was the best construction-wise but not as bad as some others

Soju: I kinda loved her awkward and endearing personality, but that cyst stuff was so gross. I was sad for her because being the first out is always tough, but she deserved her elimination.

Entrance look: Soft toot. Not a huge fan of the wig but the outfit itself wasn’t horrible.

Runway look: BLESS. This has officially made it into the hall of shame of runway outfits along with dusty’s feathers and space outfit and Serena Cha Cha. Its was baaad, I have no other words.

Vanessa Vanjie: Bitch I am so happy she is back on my TV. I was afraid she’d be too much or milk the Vanjie thing, but she was her hilarious self. She’s definitely this season’s narrator, and her explanation of the photoshoot was too funny.

Entrance look: TOOT! I really loved this look. It was simple but the monochrome red looked super polished and beautiful

Runway look: Toot! This was a great amalgamation of her’s and Valentina’s styles. She looked beautiful and totally redeemed herself from s10

Yvie: Ugh I’m already so god damn in love with this bitch. She may not be the most polished, but I can already see her creativity is out of this world. And her mug is freaking awesome! Finally something different.

Entrance look: Boot. Now I love this bitch and I was actually in love with this look fron the waist up, but the bottom of that dress was unforgivable with that boa. Literally all she had to do was cut it off at the knee and hem it.

Runway look: Toot! It wasn’t the most expensive on the runway, but she was representing Alaska so cheap is appropriate. I thought her plastic jacket was super cool, could’ve used something on the bottom though

@youngjustices the part of my brain that loves the show because it was so important to me for so long wants to say watch it but the part of my brain that wants to protect you says don’t....for your own good 😔

a big reason a lot of us fell out of the fandom is because two of the main actors were revealed to be tr*mp supporters (jace norman and sean ryan fox). if you just want to watch the show disregarding that, though...overall it started off really strong, cheesy but really cute with sort of lab rats energy except a little more goofy and with less concrete plot lines. the first three seasons are extremely chaotic but also pretty wholesome with really cute friendships between the main three kids and an adult superhero who is kind of like a childish but fun dad. as far as i can remember the main gross thing about the first few seasons is that d*n schneider produced them so there are some weird romance plots between like 13 year olds, but it’s not a huge part of the story and not necessarily inappropriate just something to watch out for. and then like, i think s4 is when it starts getting kinda :/ yikes? at least that’s when the main superhero/dad character starts getting super annoying and awful and rude. and then i think around s5, maybe before then (?) the female lead of the show, who is a black girl, starts getting incredibly disrespected, like to a gross degree where she’s constantly talked over and not listened to and belittled despite being the smartest person there. on top of all of that there’s really intense queer baiting and ship baiting between the leading characters—like for the main m/f ship of the fandom they would literally do promo videos about them and had a whole episode about them possibly having feelings for each other that was super hyped up and then...just let it flop.

i’m trying not to sell it too short though. those are just my warnings. henry danger is a fun watch but it’s not necessarily a good show—there are some really good plot lines but ultimately the reason i stuck around was because i got really attached to the characters after watching them grow up. the leading kids are really wonderful and have great development and while it’s sort of tainted by their actors being awful if you’re the type of person who can separate them then you’ll love them. henry is sweet and heroic and a badass, charlotte is the smartest hottest person ever who is established as being able to kick ass as well as (or better than) henry, jasper is everything good in this world and also gay (he’s so ridiculously queer-coded it’s insane) and you will hate piper at first but by the end of it you’ll be obsessed with that funky little lesbian. and the show ends nicely. like despite everything it has a really solid ending and that’s more than i can say for a lot of things i’ve watched.

so like the tldr isn’t not to watch it necessarily? it’s just to like...go into it prepared for the show to repeatedly destroy any semblance of character or relationship development you think is coming and be filled with one-off plots that are often poorly written. sometimes it will make you laugh out loud. sometimes it will make you want to bash your head into a wall. most of the time it does both at once, somehow. if you do choose to watch it i expect regular updates in my inbox.

(btw, if you want a show that has similar energy to HD but MUCH better writing and plot/character development, i’d check out the thundermans and knight squad. the thundermans is very similar to lab rats or wizards of waverly place and centers around a family of superheroes, and it’s SO good especially in the realm of character development. knight squad is about a school for knights, it’s VERY diverse w more poc than white leads, it’s really wholesome and the friendships are stellar, and literally my only criticism with it is that it was cancelled too soon)

What No Man Has Seen Before: Remastering Deep Space Nine to Maximum Quality

Most stories don’t begin at the ending, but that’s the only place to start this one. I’ve been working to remaster Deep Space Nine for the past nine months, ever since AI-based video upscaling software began to hit the market. After I saw how much improvement could be wrung out of some old MKVs, I decided I’d start over, using the original, superior, Deep Space Nine DVD source. I’ll be demonstrating the results all throughout this article.

I have created a 23.976 progressive version of Deep Space Nine, codenamed Rio Grande. While I have not yet checked the method against the entire show, it worked well on test episodes from S2, S4, S5, and S6. Special thanks to Cyril Niderprim, who found the hilariously simple solution below, and a pox on the small mountain of more complicated scripts I’d written. While Rio Grande is capable of throwing errors — I have included an example of such — there’s an alternative if it tangles up an episode in a way you don’t like.

I have also achieved an identical-quality 59.94 fps conversion, codenamed Orinoco. Orinoco preserves motion correctly in all scenes and is included here as an insurance policy. While it matches Rio Grande on quality, it packs 2.5x the frames and takes 2.5x as long to process and upscale. Rio Grande should work — but if it doesn’t, Orinoco will. If either of these methods proves insufficient to deal with an episode, we’ll come up with a custom way of handling it and I’ll wind up writing something about it and/or updating this article to keep track of special cases.

I’ve done a couple renders of the credits to showcase two different AI upscaling models Topaz offers: Theia Detail (at default settings) and Gaia-CG. Gaia-CG is below:

This article is not a step-by-step tutorial on how to perform this process suitable for literally anyone to follow. That will be its own project. I will, however, provide enough information that anyone with a passing knowledge of AviSynth should be able to recreate both approaches.

There’s a missing bit of frame for several seconds when the Bajoran freighter is panning around the station. This is a unique error — I’ve never seen it anywhere else on the show — and it pops up a lot, nearly regardless of what filters you use to adjust an episode. It’s always unique to the credits; you don’t need to worry about random blocks of content missing from the sides of your video.

Maximum Warp

Rio Grande and Orinoco make as few compromises on image quality as is reasonably possible. Every aspect of this process is designed to preserve detail at the deliberate cost of hard drive space until the final encode, at which point you can be as lossy as you like.

All of the clips you’ll see below were encoded in 0.0 H.264 until losslessly upscaled frame-by-frame. I encoded these clips in H.265 at a CRF of 6, which turned out to be ludicrous overkill. Live and learn. There’s a freeze-frame, just-noticeable quality difference between CRF 14 and CRF 20, while 25 is pretty ugly.

Upscaler Models: Avoid Artemis, 200 Percent Upscales

I’ve encoded at least one example of every upscaler mode Topaz offers except for Artemis-LQ and Artemis-HQ. These algorithms are completely unsuited to Deep Space Nine, and while they no longer produce literal garbage output when run against the show, they do not react well to its content. Consider them fundamentally unsuited to the task. I don’t care for Gaia-HQ’s output against DS9 very much, though I included one example below. That leaves the two Theia models and Gaia-CG.

I’ve always preferred Gaia-CG, so that’s what the majority of the encodes are in, though I’ve also showcased the Theia algorithm family. The Theia models offer tunable parameters for noise, sharpness, and detail recovery, and these can be very useful if you’re attempting to denoise an ugly patch of wall or carpet.

The 200 percent upscale option should be avoided. It creates errors that were not originally present in the source in some cases and it offers meaningfully reduced image quality compared to the 400 percent version. Be advised that the repair process has a habit of creating a seam down the left or right side of the image frame — you can crop it out with no trouble, but it’s something to be considered.

Topaz offers the option to upscale losslessly by image or via lossy MP4. All of the upscale videos you’ll see here are lossless PNG conversions.

How Much Additional Detail Did I Recover?

The idea that sent me haring off on this mad quest was that I could extract additional visual data if I returned to the source DVD rather than relying on old backup files. Here’s an example of my best upscale in January:

While some of these improvements come from low-level improvements to the AI upscalers themselves, the upscaler has to be able to lock on to enough information to upscale an image without making hash of it. Imagine a screenshot where everything was rendered at DVD resolution except for Odo’s hair, which was done in 4K. It would look odd, to say the least. The more detailer the upscaler can get its hands on, the better the chance it creates something gorgeous on the back end. Going back to the DVDs gave the upscaler more to work with in the final process.

As a reminder of how far we’ve come: The following three screenshots are the Defiant as it appears on the native DVD, the best upscale result I could achieve in early February, and my current best result today:

Here’s my favorite Defiant shot from the entire show. I was really proud of how this turned out in April. It’s still quite nice.

I still like the way this came out, but it’s not the best we can do.

This is one place where I’m obviously getting help from a tweaked AI upscaler model. Better processing might clean up the model a bit differently, but some of the features on the hull are slightly different shapes. This image benefits from a side-by-side comparison to the other at maximum resolution.

The gains are real. Every time I compare an upscale based on the old MKV files I’d created years ago against the benefit of going back to the DVD, the DVD wins. If you want the best version of Deep Space Nine, invest in the DVD set.

So How Good is It?

With careful processing and good upscaling, it’s possible to give Deep Space Nine a clarity that I think approaches that of what’s typically referred to as “HD” content, though it’s still limited to the NTSC color gamut as opposed to later standards like Rec. 709. At its worst — allowing for some deviations from perfection — it’ll still look like the best damn DVD you’ve ever seen. At its best — and I consider the shot of Sisko up there to be one of the best — I’d argue that he, at least, comes across in HD levels of detail.

The processing steps I’ve used repair some baked-in damage to the source, but not all of it. There’s a frame sequence in “The Way of the Warrior” that literally looks as though something was spilled on the film, and that’s not something I know how to fix. All of the encodes below are from Rio Grande.

Way of the Warrior: It’s No Illusion

“The Way of the Warrior” contains two of the best battle scenes of Season 4. In the first, Sisko takes the Defiant to rescue a Cardassian ship under heavy fire from the Klingons. You can see the VFX team experimenting with what amounts to an over-shoulder kill cam — not exactly the kind of thing Next Generation was known for. It’s obvious the VFX teams had a lot of fun with the Defiant.

The second major battle scene of the episode is below. There’s an excellent callback to an event from the show’s pilot, when Kira attempts to bluff a squadron of Cardassian warships into believing the station is far better armed than it actually is.

This time around, things go differently. Upscaled in Theia Fidelity first, at default settings, followed by Gaia-CG. Gaia-CG is what I’ve used for screenshots in the past:

I’ve included clips of normal human interaction in this article specifically to illustrate that these processing techniques don’t just work on starships and battle scenes. Deep Space Nine is about far more than just CGI combat — it just happens to have some really great examples of the latter, particularly by late-90s standards. Gaia-CG below:

Paradise Lost

The Defiant takes on the Lakota in this battle scene. Elements of Starfleet were in the process of slow-walking a coup attempt. This clip deliberately shows what happens when Rio Grande doesn’t get a scene entirely right. While this shot mostly works, it’s noticeably jerky at the end. I’ve confirmed that this only affects Rio Grande — Orinoco plays back perfectly smoothly in this situation. If the small amount of jerk doesn’t bother you, Rio Grande is your oyster. If it does, try Orinoco.

Far Beyond the Stars

One of the benefits of science fiction is that it allows creators to play fast and loose with the question of time travel. Here, Benjamin Sisko is flung back into the 1950s — at least, in his own mind — and finds himself face to face with the ugly racial politics of the era. Upscaled in Gaia-CG:

Sacrifice of Angels

Y’all knew we’d be back to this episode, right? In First Fleet (below, rendered in Gaia-CG), the Federation closes to battle with the advance forces of the Cardassian / Dominion military. I quite like the Galaxy-class maneuvers that bookend the clip. The Galaxy-class often looked fat and ungainly from certain angles, while others showed it to great effect. It gets more of the latter and less of the former on DS9 than it did on TNG.

This initial engagement doesn’t provide the opening the Defiant needs in and of itself. Starfleet decides to try and force a breach through enemy lines, even though they’re outnumbered, 2:1. This is the scene I chose to render in a number of different ways. First, Gaia-CG:

Next, here’s Gaia-CG at CRF=20. The quality loss is modest here, but I don’t recommend going much higher. The problem with starting from DVD source is that there’s not a lot of detail to lose before quality starts suffering, and the interpolated/upscaled information is only just so good to start with. When you start pushing the quality downwards past a certain point, it drops like a rock. CRF=25 is way too high. I wouldn’t go lower than 20.

Although I’ve chosen to focus on the later seasons of the show, this encoding and upscaling method works on the early seasons, too. Just keep in mind that the actual source material for the early seasons isn’t as good as what we got in later years.

That concludes the demonstration portion of today’s program. Now, let’s talk about implementation.

How to Encode Rio Grande

To encode using Rio Grande, rip the DVD using DVD Decrypter and generate a D2V index file using DGIndex or an equivalent tool of your choice. Next, fire up whatever AviSynth front-end you use, if you use one at all. I use StaxRip, personally.

The AviSynth script is as follows:

TFM() TDecimate() QTGMC2 = QTGMC(Preset=”Very Slow”, SourceMatch=3, InputType=2, Lossless=2, MatchEnhance=0.75, Sharpness=0.5, MatchPreset=”Very Slow”, MatchPreset2=”Very Slow”) QTGMC3 = QTGMC(preset=”Very Slow”, inputType=3, prevGlobals=”Reuse”) Repair(QTGMC2, QTGMC3, 9)

That’s it. You also have the option to inject some noise back into the video in the process of running these scripts — season to taste, basically. Noise added to one of the QTGMC runs will still come through after repair. While Rio Grande isn’t 100 percent frame-perfect, it works perfectly on all but one of the 29.97 fps scenes I’ve tested against. If it proves to have more issues than anticipated, we’ll modify it — and that’s where Orinoco comes in. Technically, it’s possible to render this specific scene at 59.94 fps and then include it in the 23.976 fps version by assembling a VFR file when you compile your image sequence back into video. I might explore this in a future update.

The QTGMC runs above are required to achieve the improved visuals, and while I’m completely open to alternatives, nothing I’ve ever tried comes anywhere close to what this script can do. You can tune the above script for strength and processing time, but you’ll notice the quality hit from stepping down to “Slow” from “Very Slow” and “Medium” is unsuited to the task. If you like your content noisy and you don’t mind more combing artifacts (or have a different solution for dealing with them), “Slow” may be a better option.

The one downside to running QTGMC this way is that it can occasionally produce a small ripple in one part of a scene. I find it trivial to ignore and the only solutions I’ve found for it so far cause far more damage than the ripple itself. While I’d like to get rid of it, it’s currently a tolerated “feature.”

The “InputType=2” and “InputType=3” sequences are essential. Running a single QTGMC instance will not produce the same effect. Running two instances of “InputType=2” will not achieve the same effect. There are nine potential ways to combine input types in a repair run like this and I’ve tested every single one of them. The “2,3” combination is what works the best, from “Emissary” to “What You Leave Behind.”

Similarly, I’ve tested all 25 functional “Repair” modes AviSynth supports. You want ,9. If you don’t like that output for whatever reason, try ,1. Most of the others didn’t have much of an impact one way or the other, though a few of them broke content in interesting ways. I’ve revisited them more than once when testing new filters, just to see how final output varied by mode.

How to Encode Orinoco

Orinoco is not simple, but it works far better than I feel like I had any right to expect.

For starters, we’re creating two files, not just one. Encode your first version of your target episode using the following script:

TDeint(mode=1, type=2, tryweave=true, mtnmode=3, full=false, ap=10, aptype=2, slow=2)

This script orders TDeint to produce doubled frame output, to perform kernel interpolation, to attempt to repair a frame by weaving if the result is fewer combing artifacts than deinterlacing would create, and to only deinterlace interlaced frames. This preserves the progressive frames baked into the NTSC source. Type=5 was the only option that came close to Type=2 in overall image quality, and the bi-directional blending Type=5 introduces causes more frame blending issues at scene boundaries. Type 5 occasionally fixes a problem in Type 2, but it causes them far more often than it repairs them.

Now we set this clip aside and turn our attention to the other. Run the following script against your second clip:

While similar, this script is not identical to the script we used for Rio Grande. Rio Grande’s QTGMC implementation is run in progressive mode. For Orinoco, we want to double the frame rate, bringing our base 29.97fps up to 59.94fps. Now that QTGMC and TDeint are at the same frame rate, we run a repair against them, too. If you run two clips in “Repair” mode at two different frame rates, it’ll work… ish. You’ll know if you’ve done this if you’ve got a weird seam migrating across your video.

This is a bass-ackwards approach to video editing, at least as far as I’m aware, but there’s a method to my madness. The reason people don’t typically just inject a bunch of frames to bring VFR 23.976 / 29.97 content up to 59.94fps is that the process the interpolated and blended frames that boost the frame rate can also create visual errors and other problems. This creates a catch-22: Leave those frames out, and the single-rate output is choppy. Keep them in, and some of your scene boundary changes are going to look decidedly odd as a fireball mushrooms from someone’s head, or two completely different locations are blended together. It’s not a great situation.

But there’s a way to fix the problem.

The reason we create the interpolated QTGMC file is to serve as a sharp, clean source against the Sacrifice-TDeint file. The reason I used QTGMC for this is that — as I’ve said before — I’ve never found an equivalent method for creating clean footage. If you want less noise in your video, use “Very Slow” or “Slow” as an alternative. I do not recommend “Medium” for this purpose.

You can run QTGMC against this output again if you want, but the footage will start to look a bit overprocessed. The Theia models can compensate for this to some extent, thanks to a fairly effective (and tuneable) denoise algorithm. There are multiple examples of Theia models in the videos below.

Quality-wise, Orinoco and Rio Grande get you to the same place and I often cannot tell the difference between them when I compare them frame-by-frame (not counting interpolated frames, obviously). Rio Grande is to be preferred — it’s faster and simpler — but I cannot guarantee that it’ll work on all 176 episodes of the show. If you run into an episode with erratic or stuttering motion when its created via Rio Grande, try Orinoco as an alternative and let me know you’ve hit a snag.

Flaws and Shortcomings

Orinoco and Rio Grande are not perfect. I’m still hunting for a method of eliminating the ripple. Small as it is, it’s basically the one problem left (so far!) that I haven’t solved. The best method I’ve come up with so far involves using MCTemporalDenoise, and MCTD appears to be both entirely single-threaded and causes me other headaches in terms of source quality.

If you want to experiment with MCTemporalDenoise, I’d recommend using up to seven pixels but applying a relatively weak effect (strength 2-3). This will not completely eliminate it, but it helps in certain places. If you don’t like the impact this has on your visual quality, investigate the Theia upscaling models and try applying 10-20 percent noise reduction. While you don’t want to go nuts, you can lightly smooth away some defects. I don’t like using one filter just to squash problems another creates, and with any luck Orinoco won’t be needed in the first place.

While my goal has always been to create a one-size-fits-all template for this project, I’ll record any adjustments or changes that need to be made to Rio Grande or Orinoco to deal with problematic episodes, unless that episode is Move Along Home.

Next Time on… the Deep Space Nine Upscale Project

Now that I’ve finished this project, I get to actually start ripping episodes and encoding them. I’m going to write a set of tutorials that give an actual guide to how this works, build a benchmark for workstations, and solve any per-episode problems that need fixing. I’ve come up with a completely free method of upscaling that, while not as good as Topaz, presents a genuine improvement. I also want to look into PAL.

ViacomCBS doesn’t think Deep Space Nine is worth remastering. I say it’s wrong. There’s a limited amount of improvement we can squeeze from a DVD, which is why you don’t see me referring to the show as “4K” or “UHD”, even though it’s common to see those terms tossed around in projects like this. You can upscale Deep Space Nine to 4K resolution, but there’s no way (yet) to squeeze 4K quality out of a DVD source file. This is an imperfect solutions — but it’s light-years beyond any previous version of the show that’s ever existed. If it turns out that Rio Grande does throw more than very occasional 23.976 fps errors, we’ll find a solution for those episodes. There’s every indication that Nvidia’s upcoming GeForce RTX 3080 is going to make this kind of upscaling much faster, which will reduce the pain of a 59.94 conversion.

After today, no Star Trek fan has to wait for ViacomCBS to decide it makes financial sense to invest in its own back catalog. It’ll cost some money for the DVDs and the software, and a lot of compute time to get the work done (8-10 hours per episode on an RTX 2080 at 23.976, 2.5x longer at 59.94fps). Will most people do this? No. Most people will watch the show on Netflix, where the quality is much lower than what they’d get on DVD.

But as of today, nobody has to do that again. As of today, you can see the work of the VFX artists and actors who created in this show the way it was meant to be seen. Orinoco and Rio Grande aren’t perfect, but they illustrate just how much additional quality can be wrung from late-90s DVD source. GPUs are getting faster. AI upscalers are getting smarter. Even if the computer or GPU you own today isn’t capable of tackling a project like this, your next one very well might be.

Amazon’s Disposable Tech Is Waste Even as It Leaves the Factory

Amazon offers a flotilla of “smart” devices to replace your microwave, kids’ nightlights, wall plugs, and, coming soon, rings and eyeglasses. But almost all of these products are disposable, and the company's lackluster efforts to recycle or help repair these products is costing our planet a whole lot. The retail giant has the resources to do so much better.

And that’s before we even talk about Fire tablets.

Amazon doesn’t repair its own products for customers outside its return or warranty periods. The company doesn’t make parts available. Need a new battery for your old but still functional Kindle Paperwhite? That’s too bad, Amazon doesn’t sell them directly (though you can roll the dice on a number of third-party vendors). The same goes for microwaves and nightlights. And even after you’ve given up on fixing something, Amazon’s recycling and trade-in programs for its own products exist, but they’re drastically under-promoted.

The impact of Amazon’s cheap, hard-to-fix gear is ignored or obscured at every level. The company’s environmental report talks about a “circular economy” mostly in the context of refurbished goods customers can buy. Customers, it reads, “may discover” a device recycling program or trade-in programs (we had no idea either existed, and you likely didn’t, either). An iFixit staffer who twice received a keyboard with a missing part was told by different Amazon customer support reps to “just simply thrown into trash” [sic] and “just [give] it to garbage man, they will separate that.”

That this goes overlooked is odd, as Amazon’s impact on everything has gotten attention lately. The human cost, danger, and small business pinch of “free” delivery, the mire of fake reviews, the privacy invasions of Ring video doorbells or Alexa/Echo devices, even the impact of Cyber Monday cardboard: we’re all starting to think more critically about Amazon’s all-consuming reach.

Yet at the same time, way too many of us are okay with buying, gifting, or recommending cheap Amazon tech as disposable, good-enough solutions. Tech review sites with otherwise critical eyes regularly recommend underwhelming Fire tablets as kid’s toys or streaming screens, eagerly announce when Echo devices go on sale, and never mention where all those cheap devices end up when they age, break, or become obsolete.

In a statement, an Amazon spokesperson noted the company’s pledge to be carbon-neutral by 2040, but its own workers say the company hasn't gone far enough, and the company continues to help fossil fuel companies extract oil. Refurbishment and trade-in programs have “kept millions of devices from ending up in landfills in 2019 alone,” and many Amazon products are still in use after five years, the company said.

“While we have been focused on sustainability for many years, such as through our recycling, refurbishment and trade-in programs, we know we have more work to do to allow our customers to make informed choices and to provide transparent information about the environmental impacts of devices through their whole life cycle,” the Amazon spokesperson said.

But nobody seems to be asking of Amazon the same kind of device stewardship that we ask of Apple, Google, Microsoft, and even smaller brands. Maybe it’s due to the largely transactional relationship people have with the mega-store. Maybe it’s because people simply tolerate Amazon’s tech gear, rather than truly enjoy it, even when it’s new.

The New, Already Outdated Fire Tablet

Fire Tablets are low-end Android devices optimized for Kindle reading, streaming video, Alexa commands, and simple games. The goal is to feed you Amazon’s services and make your $120 yearly Prime membership seem worth it. Inside the current 7- and 8-inch versions ($50 and $80 respectively, though they’re often on sale for less) is a MediaTek MT8163V/B all-in-one chipset. That chip is actually slower than the one in Samsung’s Galaxy S5, released in early 2014.

There are loads of cheap, underperforming tablets available, but Amazon’s aggressive pricing, tie-in services, and outsized brand power have a reality distorting effect on buyers and otherwise critical reviewers. They’re cheap, the thinking goes; even cheaper with ads on them. At such prices, you can toss it in your bag to watch videos while traveling, or let your kids beat it up. Most people wouldn’t clutter their home with a no-name, underpowered Android tablet bought on a whim, but they’ll take one from Amazon.

Wirecutter states the HD 8 is “great for consuming Amazon-provided content, but it’s not as flexible as a full-fledged Android tablet.” But at $95 ($80 with lockscreen ads), it’s “a tolerable trade-off when you need a media-consumption tablet on the cheap.” The Verge gives the newest $150 10-inch Fire a seven out of 10, but notes it “feels as cheap as it costs” and is “slow for a 2019 device.” This is not to single out those two sites; they’re reviewing products in a particular reader-service context. Many other tech sites push cheap tablets with far less pondering.

But the net result of this very slick sales funnel is a lot of rare materials pulled from the earth, energy used to make tablets already past their prime, fuel used to ship them, and then, when they can’t be fixed or efficiently disassembled, a huge pile of shredded plastic, circuit boards, and, more than likely, hazardous batteries.

I called a local store in a national repair chain to ask if they repaired Kindle Fire tablets. “I’m gonna be honest with you, the price of repairing that is going to be equal to or more than replacing it,” an employee there told me. “Like $50 or $75?” I asked. “Last time I looked, it was $100,” the employee said. It’s not surprising that Amazon can make, pack, and ship me a tablet for just a bit more than the restocking fee on an iPad. But it’s not helping our growing e-waste problem.

Throwing ideas at the wall and shipping them

Amazon’s flotilla of always-listening Echo products is expanding rapidly. Review and tech sites are always a little skeptical, but they also link even the weirdest products with affiliate codes.

The Kindle parts that we sell at iFixit are sourced from an electronics recycler because that is literally the only place we can find them. And those parts don’t exactly fly off the shelves. It’s hard to blame people for not wanting to fix or upgrade a tablet that often costs $35.

If the door handle on your Kenmore microwave breaks, you can probably get the part and repair instructions through Sears Parts Direct. If any part of your AmazonBasics Microwave (Works with Alexa!) breaks, you have to pray that someone dismantled one and put the parts on eBay. While an Amazon spokesperson emphasized that Amazon devices regularly receive updates that require no action on the owner’s part, we wonder how many years an Amazon microwave could expect to receive security updates, and whether customers could actually fix wayward software.

Free, easy shipping for costly, tough waste

Amazon has a poorly advertised recycling program for its non-working electronics and trade-in offers for working devices (that mostly provide discounts on newer devices). Your entry to the recycling program is a kludgy form where you type in the raw number of Amazon devices you have in each category—e-readers, tablets, TV sticks, Dash buttons—and get a shipping label. There are also currently 10 U.S. locations where Amazon will accept discarded electronics.

Amazon claims that millions of devices have been saved by its refurbishment and trade-in programs. Most people simply don’t know that Amazon will trade, refurbish, or recycle their stuff. As a result, the cost of recycling cheap products lands on local municipalities, most of them already overburdened with e-waste. But even if Amazon’s mail-in recycling were wildly successful, recycling should be the last resort for electronics. We should be making products that stand the test of time, and can have multiple owners.

Not all devices need to be top of the line, and buyers should have more options than a brand-new iPad. But it would be nice to see the realities of buying and recommending cheap devices acknowledged in product reviews. Even better, mention that there are many good markets for quality used and refurbished tablets and other devices out there: Apple and Samsung have refurbished offerings, or Swappa and Back Market provide nearly as much assurance at normalized prices. And for the deal hunters, Craigslist, OfferUp, and Facebook Marketplace are great local options.

Activists like us at iFixit pressure the makers of expensive, useful devices when they fail to design for reliability and a sensible afterlife. Sometimes it pays off. Apple is pushing the envelope and developing recycled sources for challenging materials like rare earth metals, and puts trade-in and recycling options in front of their customers. Microsoft redesigned the Surface Laptop 3 to dramatically improve its repairability. Amazon, meanwhile, is selling loads of electronic devices at artificially low prices, and their product responsibility policy is, at best, a quiet and very mixed message.

It’s high time that we demand better. Let’s hold Amazon to the same e-waste standards as the rest of the industry.

HTC One M9 review: Refining beauty

The HTC One was unveiled two years ago with a considerable amount of fanfare, and for good reason. It was the first Android phone that could go toe to toe with the iPhone in terms of quality. The full metal unibody screamed sexy and blew away every reviewer. Unfortunately it didn’t translate into the kind of success that HTC was hoping for as the company continued to lose money.

Back then, it was the One M7, signifying the 7th flagship phone since HTC embarked on their own brand. Last year’s version, the M8, did help bring the company to profitability, but it still wasn’t enough.

Now we are on the third iteration of the One, which is now referred to as the M9. The third chapter generally is a good time for a redesign, but HTC feels they already have something special. Instead, they chose to refine it rather than redefine it. By combining some of the best of the M7 along with the best of the M8, HTC is hoping the third time is a charm.

There is no question that the M9 is one of the best looking phones in the world. But as I said in my review of the M8, beauty is only skin deep. There is a lot more to a phone than sexy metal. There’s the battery, the camera, the display, the software, and so on.

Is the M9 more than just beauty or is this beauty starting to feel tired and old?

Design

If there is one manufacturer in which I would love to sit in on their engineering meetings, it would be HTC’s. I referred to the One M8 as the Rolex of smartphones, and the M9 continues that tradition. The level of detail and precision is incredible. There is no question that the M9 looks very much like the M8, but there are some enhancements.

For starters, it isn’t as slippery as past renditions thanks to a more super fine brushed finish. As HTC explains it, it’s on the same level of a hand finished luxury watch production line.

The other major change is the new dual tone design as the edges are mirrored and more polished. My review unit is the Silver on Gold version, which has a silver main body, but the sides are all gold. It’s not a gaudy gold. It’s a true accent, and depending on the light, you might not even notice the distinction between the two. While the back is brushed and the sides are shiny, the front is more matte giving three different looks.

One thing to note about the new dual tone design is that there is a an extra lip along the sides about 1/3 from the top that wasn’t present on the M8. I am not sure I am a fan of it as it looks a little quirky and will be prone to collecting dirt. You can see what I am talking about in this image.

A more obvious difference from the M8 is the rear camera lens, which is larger and more square like. It’s also covered with sapphire crystal glass, which will protect it from other things in your pocket, such as keys, that scratch lens covers resulting in lower quality pictures over time.

After seeing the lower profile BoomSound speakers on the Nexus 9 and Desire Eye, it was believed that HTC would do the same with the One M9. However, HTC feel’s those BoomSound speakers mean as much to their branding as the HTC logo. Considering the M9 is their flagship, they felt that “branding” was important and decided to keep the look.

One of the biggest complaints about BoomSound has been that they add to the overall size of the device. That is probably true, but HTC managed to make the M9 smaller than the M8, even though they both sport the same exact 5-inch display. The M9 comes in at 144.6 x 69.7 x 9.61 mm, while the M8 came in at 146.4 x 70.6 x 9.35 mm. The M9 is also a tad lighter at 157 grams vs 160 grams. If there is one negative, it would be that the M9 is a little thicker than the M8, but it’s not noticeable. That extra thickness supports a larger battery, which is always a good thing. I really like the overall size and it’s very comfortable to hold.

As far as buttons and ports go, HTC made a change with the power button, moving it from the top to the right side just below the volume buttons. This is exactly what they did with the Desire Eye. Now that might seem like a small change, but if you look at any of my past reviews of HTC phones, I have always complained about their lack of consistency. They are always moving things around. Mainstream consumers crave consistency and it’s something that HTC has a hard time with. Samsung, on the other hand, figured this out long ago because they always place the power button and volume rocker in the same spots. Going back to the power button on the One series, it started at the top left side on the M7, then moved to the top right side on the M8, and now it’s on the right side below the volume buttons on the M9. Furthermore, instead of a volume rocker, it’s now two separate volume buttons (up and down). So now you have three buttons along the right side. They did give the power button a different texture to differentiate from the volume buttons at least.

Are they changing to change or is this progress? It think moving the power button to the side (from the top) is progress, but placing it below the volume buttons is a mistake. Most other manufacturers place it above the volume rocker (or buttons). HTC feels the middle of the side is more at reach, but I disagree. So can we expect another switcheroo with the M10? I know many of you might be thinking that I am complaining about senseless stuff, but it’s this lack of consistency that holds HTC back because it radiates through their other experiences.

Other than the power button, volume buttons and rear camera lens, HTC left everything else intact. The top has the same plastic black bar, which houses the IR blaster and the bottom has the microUSB slot to the right along with the microphone jack. The left side has the SIM tray towards the top and the right side has the microSD slot, also towards the top.

There is no denying that the HTC One M9 is a thing of beauty, but one has to question if there should have been a redesign for the 3rd generation. HTC tends to think that the One is already gorgeous so they chose to refine it rather than fix what isn’t broken. They see the One as something like a classic Rolex watch in which the design doesn’t change all that much over the years. However, smartphones might be personal, but not the same as jewelry. Smartphones are very functional devices in which people don’t put a huge emphasis on the quality and they crave change since they want to feel like they have something new after 2 years of using the same thing day in and day out. It’s very much like cars. Take any awesome looking car, and in a few years the manufacturer redesigns it. Since people hold onto cars for longer periods, redesigns usually take place every 4 or 5 years. Consumers generally don’t keep a phone longer than 1 or 2 years, so redesigns are needed more swiftly. Let’s put it this way, Samsung continued the same boring design for the Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4, and the Galaxy S5 (three generations). Sales weren’t so good with the Galaxy S5, and it wasn’t because of the quality, it was because it was the same old same old. If we didn’t know of the One design before today, it would be incredible, but just like anything else, if you have seen it for the past 2 years, it gets old. It’s just human nature.

With all that said. the One M9 is gorgeous and would delight those that never owned an HTC phone. You simply won’t find a more hand-crafted phone in the universe.

Hardware

The HTC One M9 features a 5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) Super LCD 3 display (441 ppi), a Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 octa-core consisting of a quad-core Cortex-A53 clocked at 1.5 GHz and a quad-core Cortex-A57 clocked at 2 GHz, Adreno 430 GPU, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, microSD slot for up to an additional 128 GB of storage, 20.7 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash and 4K video capture, 4 MP Ultra Pixel front-facing camera, BoomSound with Dolby Audio, Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, and 2,840 mAh battery.

Performance

The HTC One M9 sports the Snapdragon 810 with 3 GB of RAM. The 810 is the latest from Qualcomm, but it has also fueled much controversy with overheating. In talking with the designers, they don’t think overheating was ever an issue with the said processor. In my testing, I didn’t notice anything in particular either, but I didn’t get to play with any pre-production units. The 810 is obviously very fast and the M9 is one of the fastest phones I have ever tested. With that said, the real test is over time. Many Android phones start lagging several months into their life, and how the 810 factors into that is a big question.

The display is basically the same as what you had on the M8. It’s a 5-inch Super LCD 3 panel with 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution. The reason HTC didn’t make the change to Quad HD (2K) is because of battery life, and consumers don’t really notice a difference. I agree with HTC here. Battery life is too vital than to worry about a few more pixels that most won’t appreciate all that much. HTC’s Super LCD 3 has fallen behind the likes of Samsung’s Super AMOLED offerings, but they are still brilliant with sharp colors and fantastic viewing angles.

I never thought BoomSound would need an upgrade, but HTC threw in Dolby Audio this year. You’re going to need a keen ear to notice a difference, but the bottom line is that you won’t find better speakers on any other smartphone. They also offer two listening modes: Theater and Music. I didn’t notice too much of a difference between the two other than the level of audio. The question I still have is whether consumers really want or need this amazing sound from their smartphone? According to Kantar, HTC One owners listen to music more than other smartphone owners. Are they listening to that music through BoomSound, Bluetooth or headphones? The good news is that it’s not all about the BoomSound speakers because the M9 is one of the few phones that support high res audio at 24-bit/96kHz. That means that you can play that quality through the headphone jack or through HTC Connect (more on that later).

Battery

HTC has been improving the size of the battery with each One. The original M7 sported 2,300 mAh, followed by 2,600 mAh on the M8. Now the M9 has 2,840 mAh. Couple that with the efficiency of the Snapdragon 810, and you should have decent battery life. Let’s start with our video rundown test in which we run continuous video while the phone is connected to LTE. The M9 didn’t fair too well in this test as it only lasted 7 hours and 22 minutes. Last year’s M8 came in at 11 hours and 40 minutes. Why the sudden drop off? The only thing I can deduct is that my review unit is a T-Mobile device, and since I live in a fringe area, it might have switched from LTE to 2G every so often during the test. Now the good news is that in my regular use, I was able to get about 16 to 18 hours when using Wi-Fi for most of the time. However, if you get into heavy use, like gaming, using navigation or not being able to connect to Wi-Fi, you will probably only be able to get 12 to 14 hours. The M9 is compatible with Qualcomm’s QuickCharge so you should be able to juice up rather quickly. Unfortunately they don’t include a compatible charging cable in the box.

Software

With every new version of the HTC One comes a new version of Sense, HTC’s user interface built on top of Android. Under the hood is Android 5.0.2 Lollipop and it’s frosted with Sense 7. Appearance-wise, Sense 7 looks and acts very much like Sense 6, but HTC wanted to personalize it by giving users more customization, and at the same time, provide information that might be useful.

Probably the coolest feature is the new Themes app. There is a huge community of themers for all of Android, but unfortunately mainstream consumers never get to enjoy such fun since it either involves installing custom ROMs or installing third party launchers. Installing a third party launcher and downloading icon packs isn’t all that hard, but most people don’t have the time for that. HTC is offering something simple that everyone can enjoy. They have various stock themes that include a wallpaper for both the main home screen as well as the lock screen, along with color palettes that match it and various icon designs to choose from. They even kick things up a notch by allowing you to select your own picture for the wallpaper and the Themer application will analyze the colors in it and offer you a coordinating color palette.

You will be given a few choices to choose from, but you can also tweak things a little as in change the font, the colors, the sounds, and/or even the icons. There’s even a Themes website where you can share your creations and download other’s masterpieces. One of the negatives is that the Themer app can only change the icons of HTC core apps, and it can’t fundamentally change other third party apps. So for example, if you choose a round icon theme, all of HTC’s core apps will have round icons, while third party apps, such as YouTube, will still be square but with a round boarder. However, if you’re the creative type, you can make your own icons in Photo Shop and upload them through the Theme Maker Pro tool on HTC’s site. One thing that I found surprising is that users can’t upload and share themes created from the app on the phone. Only themes created online can be published. HTC is betting that Theming will be a hit, and it just might be since it’s so easy to use.

Next up is the Sense Home widget that arranges apps by usage and location. There is Home, Work, and Out. You can set the locations for both your Home and Work, and Sense will keep track of the apps that you use the most in those locations, as well as when you’re anywhere else. So for example, you might use Foursquare and Swarm when you’re out and about so those apps appear when you are at a restaurant, but they won’t appear when you’re at home or work.

HTC also included a Downloads folder, which will house every app that you download (in the app launcher too) instead of placing icon shortcuts all over your home screen. The Suggestions folder will suggest apps that you might want to download based on the apps that you are using. Both the Downloads and Suggestions folders are found in the Sense Home Widget, but can be removed if you don’t want them.

HTC has included the new Lollipop notifications on the lock screen, but they also added BlinkFeed-powered suggestions for restaurants from Yelp and Foursquare. These will appear at mealtimes. HTC will continue to build on this by adding more suggestions. They are already working on something called “The Morning Water Cooler” in which it will show you the news that’s trending.

BlinkFeed is also back and works very much the same way. It resides at the left most home screen, and you can customize it with whatever types of news you’re interested in.

I think HTC has done a very good job with Sense, and the best part is that they don’t force you to use or even look at their custom features. If you don’t like BlinkFeed, you can easily remove it. If the Sense Home widget is annoying, then remove it from the home screen like any other widget. And of course, if you don’t want to theme your phone, you don’t have to. However, I think a lot of users will find these new features very useful, so give them a chance before removing anything.

HTC has brought back HTC Connect, which lets you connect to compatible devices such as Qualcomm AllPlay speakers, DLNA speakers and TVs, Miracast compatible display devices, Bluetooth speakers, or HTC certified devices. Assuming the device (TV or speaker) is already setup on your Wi-Fi network, all you have to do is swipe up with three fingers from any media app on the M9, choose the device to connect to, and the video or audio will start playing on the remote device. You can even control the volume, pause, and resume playback. This will work with HTC apps as well as most other third party apps like Pandora, Spotify, etc.

Since the M9 includes Lollipop, you will find a lot of other new features that are from stock Android itself. One thing I was very happy about was that HTC kept Lollipop’s Restore Apps feature when turning on the device for the first time out of the box. You will be given the option to use Tap & Go by linking your old phone to your new M9 via NFC or by selecting the apps to restore from another device associated with your Gmail account. This makes setting up your M9 an absolute breeze.

You will also find Smart Lock, which allows you to automatically bypass your security lock by location or when connected to a particular Bluetooth device. I should note that I had a very difficult time setting up a Trusted Location as Google Play Services constantly stopped working, and even when I was able to set my home as a location, it still didn’t work. I finally got it working by setting my Home location and manually adding my address as a separate location. I don’t believe this is an issue with the M9 software, but more of an issue with Google Play Services since so many people are having this problem with other phones on Lollipop. You will also find Screen Pinning, which lets you lock an app on the screen for guests or kids. However, there is a Kids Mode that HTC provides that is more sophisticated. Finally HTC has incorporated Lollipop’s Material Design theme in their core apps such as the Dialer, Music app, and so on, but you won’t find the new Action Buttons.

I think with the power of Lollipop and Sense, the overall experience is fantastic. Sense has always been my favorite manufacturer UI skin because it’s not overpowering. With Sense 7, HTC has kept the majority of it the same as Sense 6, but added some useful enhancements.

Camera

HTC put a huge emphasis on the camera with the One M7, but things went backwards with the M8 when optical image stabilization (OIS) was omitted. At the same time, the 4 MP Ultra Pixel for a second straight year didn’t excite anyone either. Now it seems that HTC has learned their lesson on the whole Ultra Pixel thing by giving us a 20 MP rear camera and moving the Ultra Pixel lens to the front of the device on the M9. The thought is that Ultra Pixel was needed two years ago for better low light performance, but now the technology has caught up allowing for more megapixels. That is all well and good, but the lack of OIS is a big time Debbie Downer. They eliminated it on the M8 because they supposedly couldn’t make it work with the Duo Camera setup. Now that’s gone, and they still didn’t bring it back. As HTC touted two years ago, it isn’t about the megapixels, and that still holds true today. A flagship phone in 2015 needs OIS for not only keeping things steady, but also aiding those low light shots.

Let’s start with the software. HTC hasn’t changed too much here. They still allow you to just point and shoot or make a ton of adjustments if you know what you’re doing. And just like last year, you can save various profiles for easy retrieval by placing them on the modes screen. Speaking of modes, you will only find Selfie, Camera, and Panorama out of the box. They do offer three other modes that you can download: Bokeh, Photo Booth, and Split Camera. Since there is no Duo Camera setup, Bokeh will give you the ability to blur part of your photo. Photo Booth and Split Camera is part of the Eye Experience that debuted on the Desire Eye. One glaring omission is Zoe (the original Zoe), which is now the new name for Video Highlights. Zoe (originally) would take up to 20 burst shots and video at the same time, but HTC found that most consumers didn’t use it. I actually thought Zoe was one of the coolest features, but I am in the minority I guess.

HTC always offered numerous ways to edit your photos, and they have some new stuff with Sense 7. Shapes, Photo Shapes, Prismatic, and Double Exposure are all new this year. Shapes allows you to add colored shapes to your photos, while Photo Shapes allows you to overlay a shape filled with a second photo on top of the current photo. Prismatic gives you the ability to create a kaleidoscopic effect with prismatic shapes. Finally, Double Exposure allows you to layer and edit two photos blending them together.

Back is Elements, which allows you do add animated effects like snow and bubbles, and Face Fusion, which blends two faces together.

Also back again is Video Highlights, but it has been re-branded as Zoe. This is probably the best proprietary software HTC has done over the last couple of years. It will make a fully edited movie with music from your videos and pictures. Now that the Zoe app is available for all Android users, other’s can collaborate on your movie as well. Plus, it’s coming to the iPhone soon.

I like what HTC has done with the camera software. It’s simple enough for the beginner, but it offers a lot of features for the pro. It’s by far my favorite manufacturer camera app.

Where the M9 fails is not in the software, but in the ability to take great photos. Just like most cameras, it gets the job done in daylight, but even in decent light, the colors are dreary or don’t pop. Things get even worse in lower light when you will see a lot of noise and blurriness. Focusing was hit or miss as it had a hard time locking in.

Since low light is more of an issue, I included a lot more of those in the example photos below.

Closing

The HTC One M9 might be one of the best looking smartphones, but does that make it a great phone? It has great specs and software, but the battery life is average and the camera fails to compete with other flagships. I know a lot of people don’t put a huge emphasis on the camera, but if you want to be a “flagship” phone, then you need a top notch camera to not only compete with the Galaxy S6, but also the iPhone.

There is also the design issue. The M9 is beautiful, but we have already seen this design with the M7 and M8. High end luxury watches can be timeless, but not smartphones. If this design was introduced for the first time, we would applaud it, but it’s now the third generation, and unfortunately that gets old for those that already own an M7 or M8. It was already proven that designs in the third generation fail from what we saw happen with the Galaxy S5. Samsung might have sold a lot of phones, but not as much as anticipated because it was boring. The M9 might be great for the person who never owned an HTC One phone, but then again, you have to ask yourself if the camera is important. The M9 is a definite upgrade in terms of specs for those that own an M7, but it doesn’t feel different which is important. After using the same phone day in and day out for the past two years, consumers want something different.

So where does the M9 fit in here? The M9 is hand crafted with precision and is gorgeous, but unfortunately that might not be good enough. Things haven’t changed much from when I said the M7 was the best smartphone on the planet, but is it good enough? Actually, things have changed because this most recent One probably isn’t the best Android smartphone on the planet.
