Day 5 of @khoc-week

Today was a little more upbeat than the previous few days, but I gotta say I really like these! They were very fun to write, so enjoy!

Day 5 Aug 5th Gummiship: Favorite and least favorite worlds, and how they handle going to each

✦Lief 

Favorite World: Enchanted Dominion

Least Favorite: Dwarf Woodlands

While both worlds are fairly wooded, Lief much prefers the multiple open fields and fairly decent paths of Enchanted Dominion. This is compared to the thick forest and many swamp-like areas that cover the Dwarf Woodlands. If Lief has to take a mission into the Dwarf Woodlands, she tends to wear lighter clothes than her sweater. She also likes to style her hair differently to keep it off of her neck. She will however still bring her sweater with her, just in case she ventures down into the mine. It can get chilly down there!

Favorite World: Wonderland

Least Favorite: Beast’s Castle

Kiti likes Wonderland because everything is a little bit topsy turvy there, so it makes Kiti feel a little more okay about their own inner turmoil, and a little less topsy turvy themselves. They still love all the fun and wild adventures that can be had in the world though and are a fan of the Cheshire cat. Kiti will refuse to do missions that go to Beast’s Castle, and the world it's in. Not because of the spooky castle, or the beast, or even the talking furniture. It's just too cold. No thank you!

Favorite World: Dwarf Woodlands

Least Favorite: Dwarf Woodlands

Dante has a love-hate relationship with the Dwarf Woodlands. He loves looking at all the old trees, and the interesting shapes they've grown into over their long lives. He also likes picking a flower or two from the meadows for Taffy, when they aren't on missions together. However, he usually ends up sticky and gross from the humid swamp air, and he is definitely not a fan.  Dante can handle the dry heat of Agrabah just fine, but the Drawf Woodlands Humidity always does him in. 

✦Tagen

Favorite World: Daybreak Town

Least Favorite: Olympus Coliseum

Tagen isn't against going to other worlds but any means, but he rather likes it when missions or even just the daily hustle and bustle keeps him close to home. Plus there is lots to see and do around Daybreak Town. Tagen doesn't avoid Olympus, but he doesn't really like how their definition of ‘hero’ makes him feel. He doesn't really know how to put that feeling into words, but he does wonder why there's only one sure-fire way to become and be a hero. Or at least, so it seems. Especially when everyone is so different from each other. Maybe the hero business really isn't for him.

✦Taffy

Favorite World: Castle Of Dreams 

Least Favorite: Agrabah

Taffy loves the castle of dreams, and the world it's in. While she has no desire to meet or fall for that world's prince (she's already got her own), when the word about the ball spread among daybreakers, Taffy couldn't help but want to go. She's a romantic. Dante and her did have their own makeshift ‘ball’, at which they learned that, A) Waltzing is a lot harder than it seems, and B) you shouldn't dance romantically, or really even at all, on the rooftops. Luckily neither of them were hurt. When it comes to Agrabah, Taffy just doesn't like the sand in her shoes. Taffy’s shoes can take a lot, but maybe not sand, and definitely not scorching hot sand. On another note, Taffy would have loved the Candy Kingdom, if she ever had been able to see it! 

✦Everest

Favorite World: Beast’s Castle

Least Favorite: Wonderland

Everest loves the magical feeling the snow around the Beast’s castle has. Even when it's a raging storm, the castle is one of the few worlds with snow, so Everest likes watching it. By no means does he actually like being outside in it, but it sure is pretty! Everest has a small grudge against, and more specifically the rose maze in it. He's come home to his flat with snags, scrapes, thorns, cuts, you name it, all from that one area! He would rather just avoid the maze altogether now, and save the supplies.

Ingrid Bright. A name that just by saying can send shivers down everyone's spine. All members of the Bright family were known for being ruthless, but Ingrid was indeed something else.

A woman of power, a woman of pride, a woman of determination.

A woman of mysteries.

She was known for being a merciless business woman. A person that wouldn't let the feelings of her co-workers overcome her own destination towards glory. She was ruthless, but it was clear that her path would lead her company to greater heights.

Her attitude wasn't the most pleasant or supportive, but if it wasn't for her lead, her family's company would probably die sooner than her predecessors anticipated.

It has been passed from father to son since the founder of the corporation. From a small inventor building steam machines, to one of the most powerful corporations in technology and science. Although their research is mostly done privately, their technology is shared worldwide, even if their products are… A bit too expensive.

You think that because of such high prices, and the consumers being only the 1% of the population, the corporation was starting to fall. Ingrid's father tried to make changes to the company that sadly, went unnoticed.

It was Ingrid who changed their usual business practices drastically, which although not being perfect, helped the company get to the right tracks to a better future.

Ingrid had saved her family's company, but in the process of being passed down from "father to son", Ingrid had separated herself entirely from her dad.

Not many people really understand what happened, but Ms. Bright had a terrible argument with her father, that caused the two to cut communication.

Ms. Bright still wears the name Bright proudly. It could be either for the meaning of it, or for her strong connection with her family.

You don't really know if it's true, but, you are 65% certain that Ms. Bright may miss her father in some way or another, and keeping the name not only honors her family's achievements and predecessors, but also keeps her being at least a little closer to her father.

Not that she would ever tell you the reason why, you're only left to speculate.

"And who am I in the story?" You may be thinking. Well, you're a hand built assistant android with the latest a.i, created to serve Ms. Bright.

And also, a gift, from Mrs. Bright to his only daughter.

You see, Ingrid has trouble communicating. She can be a little rude when in reality she means well. Although, you have to admit that even if you worked for her for five years now, she is really, really scary.

"- You're an overly glorified doll, an a.i that man built to assist me when every other person around me is absolutely incompetent." She told you as she was walking really, really fast to her office. You tried following her pace but it was really hard for you to go just as fast as her.

"- You're supposed to do the tasks that I order you to do, yet you went out of your way once again." She was scolding you because of an incident that occurred a couple of seconds ago. You're beautifully designed, perfect for being a social android capable of resolving simple tasks. But you weren't built for holding weight.

"- I-I'm sorry Ms. Bright-!" You tried helping a couple of manual workers that were rebuilding one of the rooms. They were holding really heavy stuff that although it was natural to them, it made your arms disattached and one of your legs break from trying to support your whole body and the extra weight.

You can't help but feel intimidated under her gaze, but you know that… Deep down, behind that rough exterior there is a person that doesn't want you to get hurt.

"- This is the eight time you do this and I can't stand that pompous prick! There is no way in hell I'll let that guy touch you again." She was talking about one of the robot engineers inside the building. You think his name was Mack, you're not sure.

Funny isn't it? You've been in his office seven times and you still don't remember his name! But you remember him being pretty funny.

"- Why won't you let Mack fix me?" You asked genuinely confused. Your naivety is adorable, but dear Lord, how infuriating it is!

"- That prick gives me some really odd glances, and besides, he's annoying." Ingrid entered her office pulling you in and closing the door. It's been such a busy day today, can't a woman enjoy her birthday in peace?

Ingrid was only being half honest. Yes, she finds Mack to be annoying, but the true reason why she hates him is because of the smug face he makes every time you two enter his office.

He knows there is something a little different from the way Ingrid treats you from the rest of the "underlings".

"- So, who will fix me?" She sits you down on the couch, as she storms around the room trying to remember all of the things she needs to resolve today.

"- I'll fix you up when I get back, I just need to- Argh, God, [Y/N] have you seen my phone?" She was crouching down to look under her desk.

"- It's, right in front of you, Ms. Bright." Her hand was right by the phone's side, yet she was so stressed out that she didn't seem to notice how close her phone was.

"- Unh? Oh." She is always in a hurry, especially on her birthday. You wish she could sit down and relax a bit, couldn't she just, don't work on her birthday? You think she should be able to stay at home at least one day.

While looking at all her notifications she reread all of the tasks you had to complete today. She decided that she'll first have her meeting with some executives and then she'll come back to fix you. She isn't really skilled in fixing robots but it'll have to do.

There is no way she is going to see that smug face today. And no way is she going to let that bastard's greasy hands touch you.

Oh, that rat gets too comfortable touching you. You're not only a fragile device but you're also property of Ingrid Bright, he is supposed to repair you whenever you're broken, not make fun of the CEO while she is right there! The audacity of this man to not only make fun of his boss in her presence, but also make jokes for you to laugh at.

"- [Y/N], when I come back I'll fix you, or maybe call someone else to do it, I don't know yet, but either way stay still. I'm probably going to take four to five hours to come back, so feel free to use the computer or read a book if you're bored." She was getting ready for her reunion, as she continued to walk in circles around the room trying to find some papers she was supposed to take to the reunion.

"- I can review some data in the computer, and probably fix some documents that need to get revised-" You wanted to be useful and try to continue your work. You feel that if you just stay in the room waiting for her to come back, you won't be really helping her like you're supposed to.

"- No, no, please, stay right there. You don't need to do your tasks today." She had cut you off stating that you shouldn't be moving so much. Your parts are almost falling down, and she still doesn't know how she'll fix you.

"- But!-" You tried to reason, but your boss was way too much of a hot head.

"- I'll be back, okay." She said as she closed the door.

Well. Guess is nap time! Or, restore energy time, I guess?

But before you managed to shut down, you heard a couple of knocks on the door.

"- I'm coming." You said hoping the person on the other side would hear it. You don't remember if anyone was going to visit Ms. Bright today, but you didn't want to keep the person waiting too long.

You tried to maneuver yourself to the door, as having one broken leg and both arms falling apart wasn't really easy.

"- Ms. Bright is having a meeting now, but I'm sure she can contact you later!" You warned the stranger, thinking that maybe they wanted something from Ms. Bright.

"- Can I help you- Oh!" You finally managed to open the door but there was no one on the other side. Only a box with flowers on top.

"- Pink lilies, yellow orchids and white roses, what a strange combination." You thought out loud. You're aware of how often Ms. Bright gains gifts from secret admirers, but never one so unusual and especially on her birthday.

Everyone knows she hates roses. You wonder if there is any card saying who is the sender.

You go back to the couch, with the bouquet in one hand, and the other one dragging the box to the couch, as you can't really pick it up. You try finding a gift card or any form of hint of who the sender is.

You found one! But… It's with the Bright Vision Corp symbol on it, and is saying that is from Mrs. Bright to Mrs.-…

Oh, you know who sent this.

"- Mrs. Bright… You're really stubborn..." Ingrid's father always sends her a gift on her birthday, mostly flowers, with a gift card with his number.

Now that you think about it, maybe the flowers that were chosen aren't so unusual, maybe they mean something. Normally he would send hyacinths. A full bouquet of only hyacinths.

They were gorgeous, but…

Every single gift card contained his name, and Ms. Bright 's old name, and she really doesn't want to be referred to with that name. She had told him the other times he sent these how she feels about it, yet, the old man doesn't seem to comprehend his own daughters feelings.

Is it because of ignorance? Is it because of spite? Is it because he doesn't care? Is it because he doesn't know any better?

Which one? You personally don't know. And Ingrid, doesn't care.

The first time he sent her this gift, she called him, but things didn't really work out.

She doesn't want to interact with him anymore, and so she burns his gifts. You asked her why, but, she just doesn't want to have him in her life anymore.

He is living his life in the countryside with his wife, living a traditional and simpler lifestyle that he always wanted. While Ingrid is living her best life really distant from them, in this big city full of lights.

Even if that means missing them sometimes.

You respect Ms. Bright privacy, so you haven't continued asking her about her decisions. This bouquet is so pretty though, it would be a shame to burn such beautiful flowers.

"- I think… Maybe she should keep this…"

You look at the box that came with the flowers. Well, "with the flowers", as looking at the box more carefully you can see that it wasn't her dad that had sent the box to her, but rather it was something she had ordered online.

"- Oh, I can't believe it is here!" Honestly, this one box has taken three weeks to find its way to the company, what the hell it's inside? The curiosity of seeing her buy this but never tell you what it was, was eating you up inside.

She was being so mysterious about this, she didn't even let you use her computer. She probably thought you were going to see her history and see what she brought (and yes, you would).

"- It's probably another fancy imported dress. Or maybe it's one of those cute japanese trinkets!" You thought about picking up the box, but your arms would probably break if you tried.

"- Sigh, actually, it may be another piece of equipment for her office, like her last birthday." You sighed out loud once again, remembering how her least birthday was incredibly boring, even to you, and you don't really understand what birthdays are!

You get a little bit, it's a special date that commemorates the birth of a human being. They receive gifts and get a happy birthday party, and everyone says "happy birthday!"...

Okay, maybe you want someone to say happy birthday to you, but that is beside the point.

"- She probably have brought new computer just so she can keep being a workaholic and get stressed out every five seconds!" You probably shouldn't be ranting so loudly, but still! It 's her birthday! She shouldn't be buying things that are for her job, she should be focusing on buying stuff that makes her happy!

Actually, maybe you… Should give her something-

"- I'm back-" Oh dearest, that was kinda fast-

You throw the gift card aside, as you have thought about a really dumb but possibly great idea.

"- [Y/N], I- [Y/N]?!? What happened to your arm?!?" She started talking with a calm and almost soothing voice until she noticed that one of your arms has started to actually fall apart from your body.

"- Uhn, nothing much." I mean, to you is nothing, really, it's just inconvenient.

"- Oh dear… Pfft, Jesus you really are a handful." She is in an oddly playful mood, which is perfect actually! This is probably the first time she doesn't sound so terribly stressed.

"- Has everything gone well in the meeting?" You ask, while you follow with your eyes her moviments. She is hyperventilating from doing so much stuff and going around the place at full speed. (Although she just… Walks really fast).

"- Well, yes, you know the usual, a bunch of old people saying this, saying that-" She starts going in detail, but she doesn't really care about the meeting. She is tired and all that she wants is to take a bath.

She lays down on the other couch across from you and goes on her rant about her day, it's honestly kinda funny how she lets herself be more comfortable with you. She doesn't like shoving her problems down on anyone's throat but she is glad you're listening.

She can feel your soft gaze on her form. It's honestly comforting. Throughout the day she poses as an absolute untouchable goddess, and everyone, even you, looks at her like she is absolutely terrifying. And, yes she knows, and yes, she… Kinda likes it.

Don't get her wrong, it is not like she is going to come out of your bed and grab your foot at night. She just feels a little stronger knowing people see her as untouchable. She doesn't feel like she is, though.

And when it comes to you, is… it is different. It's weird… She likes how you look scared, but also look so relaxed around her.

How casual you act, and how affectionate your gaze feels.

She turns her head to look at you, to confirm her thoughts but-

"- Oh… Don't tell me." Flowers. Flowers again. She has two intuitions about what those flowers are. None of them are of her interest.

"- Oh- Oh, wait! These are…" Oh dear, are you really going to continue with this plan? You want to see her happy but- Something feels wrong about this plan, something feels wrong about lying…

"- These are from who, [Y/N]?" She was getting impatient, not because of your delay, but mostly because she couldn't stand the thought of her old man sending her flowers again.

She feels weak, every time he sends her these gifts. She feels like she is going to break down and… Call him again.

And if it is an admirer, well, there goes 60 dollars worth of flowers down the drain, because she is burning them. Such a shame, really.

"- It's, I- I brought this! Happy birthday!" You screamed, because your system couldn't take the heating coming from your processor. Why does it take you so much effort to just lie? And is not like it's a big-big lie, it's just a small lie?!?

"- Ah- I, what?" All of that anger, all of those intuitions, all of those plans to burn the hell of these flowers, went completely out of the window.

She is completely lost. She can't understand what, why, when, and how?? You don't even have money, how would you buy it??

"- Oh, [Y/N], you… You really don't follow my instructions, do you?" She joked as she started to tear up- Wait, no!

"- No! Please don't cry!! I'm sorry for going against your orders I just- I-I really wanted to give you something special!!" You didn't want to make her sad, why does everything that you do have the opposite effect??

"- N-No, dummy, I'm not sad because of you. I'm happy because of you." You never gave her something like this, she didn't think it was possible for you to give her something like this. They're beautiful. They're so precious.

You're so precious.

But why roses, though? Oh well, who cares!

"- Thank you so much, [Y/N]." She had approached you, taking the flowers and holding one of your hands.

She was towering over you which was making it really hard for you two to meet each other's eyes, so she crouched down to your level.

You're really broken down, she is sweaty and tired, but none of these things matters to her. This really feels like one of those special moments.

Well… Mostly to her. You're so naive, you just feel like you gave your best friend a nice gift!

Like a cat giving their owners a prey they have hunted down. You're proud of making her happy!

Oh, but things are never really so sweet, are they?

"- [Y/N], I have something- Oh, speaking of the devil, right?" She didn't finish her sentence as she noticed the box at your side.

' This day has gone from good to better!'

"- [Y/N], I also have a gift for you."

"- But I don't have a birthday-"

"- Today is your birthday, I mean, you were activated for the first time on my birthday. So, this kinda means that we share a birthday." She is talking with her normal soothing voice, but the slight tone of happiness that came with it didn't go unnoticed.

Just like your face brightening up at the news.

' It's my birthday?!!?!' You thought.

Ingrid opened the box, absolutely excited to see your face. She took your birthday gift from inside.

"- Take a look! What do you think?" She said holding an outfit that was inside the box.

Well, you were right in a way, it was an expensive imported outfit. But… You don't know, there is something different about this outfit.

It's not as fancy and modern as Ms. Bright, but it wasn't like your "futuristic" uniform. Your uniform was minimalist and grey and white, yet the outfit was- Uhn… What's the name?

Pastel! Pastel with laces! That's the name you were looking for!

It was... cute! You it's definitely more colorful than your uniform. You're just happy you have received your first ever birthday gift, and that you don't have to wear only grey uniforms.

But wasn't the outfit a little short? A little too reveling?

Inside the box there were a couple more clothes inside. All had the same theme.

"- Well, I guess now I have matching outfits!" You joked with Ingrid, not really getting the whole picture just yet.

"- Ms. Bright, I'm really thankful for your gifts! I'm so happy that-" She interrupted you by putting a finger on your mouth.

"- Call me Ingrid, [Y/N]."

"- Oh, sure!" You said, registering the new rule.

"- …" She keeps staring at you tho. Waiting for a better response.

"- Ingrid…?" You said half asking as you didn't know exactly what she was waiting for, but after seeing the satisfaction on her face, you understood that you did right regardless.

She moved away and started packing her stuff, she was planning on going back to her house.

"- It's really late now, maybe when we get home I can repair you in peace." She said.

"- But… I always stay inside the office, don't I?" You asked, genuinely confused. She didn't need to go out of her way to fix you, you could just wait until tomorrow.

"- You used to. Come on, I'll bring you home." She picks you up. You aren't as heavy, the only thing causing some weight to be pulled down is your arms falling off. She was so excited!

"- Oh, well, I guess we'll be back in the morning right?" You asked her, and once again, you showed how naive you truly were.

"- Uhn, no, you won't be coming back. I will." She said bluntly.

"- Wait, what do -"

"- You won't be coming to work anymore, [Y/N]. You're staying inside my house."

"- But Ingrid-"

"- You aren't really the "corporation's property", so there isn't any problem of me bringing something that is mine to my house." She is rushing her pace so she can get to her car faster. God, she can't wait to throw herself on her bed.

"- Ah-" You were coming up with a hundred questions. But she decided to interrupt you so she can try and explain to you.

"- Look, before you make any more questions, let me clarify the situation. You are my android assistant right?" She does sound a little pissed, even she can tell, but please don't interpret it as she being mad at you.

I mean, she is just a little bit, but it is not your fault, you're just scared of the sudden turn of events!

You nod to her, feeling more and more confused and scared. But why would you be scared? You shouldn't be scared! Ingrid is your friend, and she is also your boss.

And she is also your owner.

"- So, I… I'm going to need you to stay inside my house from now on. You'll help me with my housework from now on. I don't need your services inside the corporation anymore."

' But I still need you in my life. As cheesy as that sounds.' She thought.

"- Oh, well, I'm glad I'm still of service!" She can't blame you for having a narrow-minded mentality. You were built to serve. Just that.

But, she does need you in her life. Her personal life. It's a complete mess after all, so she isn't completely lying.

Of course she won't let you do too much work. But she knows that throwing a new environment and new concepts to you all in one night can be pretty heavy. Can't have you steaming up and exploding on her, right?

I’m so excited to participate again. This year I'm using a character that I've previously written about for this event (Tagen, part of kh oc week 2020), and looking into his past! This is mostly going to be a story about a khux party, and how it came to fall apart, and somewhat how they moved on after. I have future plans for both Tagen and Lief in my ongoing fic, so I can't give everything away, but I don't know if I’ll ever use the other four again. Initially, the other four were created for just one part of the fic that is now already published, and two of them were just names mentioned in passing. So I thought it would be fun to give them a bit of a spotlight alongside Tagen and Lief! I should mention that these guys are all Unicornus, so I didn't really feel like writing that six times over.  They are all in the same party, anyway!

Bio: Tagen and his friend Lief were the original founding members of the party, followed by a few friends who sadly didn't stick around once the party started to fall apart. Most of the time Tagen is a pretty chill person. He loves getting into the flow of missions and meeting up with his friends. He's also really passionate about the party and the work he and Lief have put into it. Tagen can be a little hot headed and prideful at times, however, this is mostly because of that passion he feels, for his work and for his friends.

Bio: Lief is the other co-founder of the party and best friend to Tagen. She is pretty cool and collected, generally decent at calming others down with her level-headedness, especially Tagen. However, sometimes Lief herself can have a one-track mind when it comes to things, losing track of important stuff along the way. Although she and Tagen are great friends, Lief sometimes wishes he would be a little less stubborn and lend a hand with playing mediator, instead of sometimes being the cause of the problem. Most of the time though, Lief looks forward to meeting up, whether just the two of them or a small group of their friends, as a moments reprieve from the stresses of running a party.

Everest is pretty gentle and caring with his friends, making him a great aid to Lief. He does tend to worry about his party members, a little more than he probably should, especially when they take on tougher and more dangerous missions. For the most part, he's pretty good at keeping his over worrying to himself, and approaching things pretty logically.

Bio: Kiti is an old friend of Lief’s from days before the party. The two fell out of contact, and it was some of Kiti’s current friends, Dante and Taffy, who convinced them to join the party. Kiti didn't know at the time, however, that it was Lief’s party, and definitely had some mixed feelings about it. Kiti definitely prefers to stick close to their friends but isn't afraid to speak up when they see something is wrong. Being a friend of Lief’s has caused some tension, despite a few perks in some places. Kiti does value being able to speak to at least one of the party leaders on a more real level, however, they also feel the disconnect between leadership and average party wielder more because of this, and is definitely frustrated by it.

Bio: Taffy is one of Kiti’s closest friends, and one of the reasons they ended up joining the party at all. Much like her name, Taffy is a very sweet and bubbly person, generally bringing a smile to everyone nearby. Some people try to say she's too loud and boisterous, however Kiti, and Dante, Taffy’s partner, always tell her she shouldn't change how she is, no matter what other people say to try and bring her down. Taffy and Dante have been together a good while, and are almost always seen with each other. It's a bit of a running joke in the party, though Kiti says it's really only half of a joke at this point, that those two are proof that soulmates exist.

Bio: Dante is a friend of Kiti’s, and Taffy’s partner. He is pretty kind, but also mischievous, and a goofball. Most of the time he just likes to make people laugh. It makes him and Taffy and great pair. Dante would also do anything for Taffy, she is absolutely his everything. However, he still loves to make time for his friends, especially to bother Kiti. Dante is much like Kiti when it comes to the disconnect between average members and party leadership, but he is not quite as passionate about fighting to make things better. He will of course stand by his friend, but Dante feels that sometimes their methods aren't the best way to approach things, and would rather let things take their course. But Dante has always been a bit more go with the flow than Kiti has.

The Impact of Tropical Cyclone 'Phailin' on the Hydrology of Chilika Lagoon, India

Abstract

The Asia’s largest lagoon; Chilika, designated as first Ramsar site in India, was studied after a severe cyclonic storm “Phailin” in October 2013 that was coupled with heavy precipitation and flooding. Physicochemical parameters, nutrients, and salinity data were analyzed to understand the impact of Phailin on the hydrology of lagoon. Multidimensional scaling analysis of 15 years of salinity data, revealed spatial partitioning of lagoon into four distinct ecological sectors; southern, central, northern, and outer channel. Fresh water discharge from the rivers remained a dominating factor for controlling the salinity regime of the lagoon (r= -0.2894, p= 0.0144).

A significant change in the salinity regime as well as in the nutrients was observed after the cyclone compared to the pre-cyclone months. The salinity of southern, central sectors and outer channel decreased by 28.7, 29.8, and 19.1% respectively, whereas in the northern sector, it remained fairly constant compared to pre-cyclone months. There was an overall increase in silicate concentration in the lagoon after cyclone due to riverine silicate influx evidenced by a significant negative correlation between salinity and silicate concentration in the lagoon. However, there was a decline in nitrate+nitrite and phosphate concentration throughout the lagoon mostly due to dilution effect as well as adsorption to sediment in case of phosphate. The impact of cyclone was also distinctly visible on specific biota such as sea grasses, macrophytes, and benthic community which are considered as good bio-indicators.

Introduction

The Bay of Bengal region of the Indian subcontinent is well known for origin of tropical cyclones, which often turn into super cyclone before hitting the continental land mass. Most tropical regions are exposed to high intensity rainfalls associated with cyclones Summer et al. [1]. Two of the cyclonic storms had hit the east coast state of India; Odisha during October of year 1999 (super cyclone) and in 2013 (severe cyclonic storm). A very severe cyclonic storm Phailin had landfall to south Odisha coast on 12th October 2013 with a sustained maximum surface wind speed of 200-210 kmph gusting to 220 kmph (IMD Report [2]. An ecological effect of such major storms on coastal ecosystems has been studied by many researchers Bhatacharya et al. [3]; Mitra et al. [4]; Reddy et al. [5]; Satpathy et al. [6]; Webster et al. [7]. Freshwater discharge can play an important role in changing the water chemistry and hydrology of the coastal estuarine ecosystem Kanuri et al. [8]; Muduli et al., 2012 [9], Muduli et al., 2013 [10], Worldwide many studies are focused on the influence of heavy freshwater discharge (due to flood events) on water quality of coastal ecosystems; Martinez-Mena et al. [11]; Steven [12]. However, such studies in context to Indian lagoon ecosystems are lacking.

Salinity is an important factor in determining the distribution of biodiversity of flora and fauna in coastal ecosystem Benjamin et al. [13]; Mcevoy et al. [14]. For instance, benthic organisms and sea grass communities have been shown to be significantly influenced by the change in salinity and turbid water flux which occurs during flood events Gaonkar et al. [15]; Orth et al. [16]. Flux of nutrients during flooding can alter the rate of primary production in the aftermath of cyclone Murrell et al. [17]; Sarma et al. [18]. Thus, monitoring of water quality assumes high priority to understand the impact of cyclone on the hydrology and biodiversity of the lagoon.

Chilika lagoon is a highly sensitive and complex ecosystem especially due to large catchment size (3500 Km2). A variety of land-derived discharge flows into the lagoon through several rivers and their distributaries. The flood after the cyclone Phailin brought a huge amount of freshwater of different chemistry into the lagoon, which could have an adverse effect on the hydrology and water quality. As salinity and nutrients are vital parameters influencing and determining the ecology and biodiversity in coastal lagoon, these two parameters were studied in great details in relation to Phailin. The specific objectives of this study are to understand

i. The effect of Phailin on the nutrients inputs from major rivers that drain into Chilika lagoon and the influence of this input on the water quality of different sectors of the lagoon.

ii. The impact of Phailin on the salinity regime of the lagoon.

Materials and Methods

Study Area

Chilika lagoon (Figure 1) is a largest brackish water lagoon in Asia located on the east coast of India (19 28' 19 54' N and 85 06' 85 35' E). It is one of the most dynamic shallow ecosystems (average depth: 2m), about 65 km long and spreading parallel to the coastline in north east to south west direction with a varying width (reaching to average 20 km). There are 52 rivers and rivulets that drain fresh water and sediment into the lagoon. There are three inlets (showed as one in the figure, due to very small spatial distances ~300m) connected to sea through which saline water enters into the lagoon. Apart from this, lagoon through the Palur Canal (Figure 1) at the southern part of the lagoon connected to the sea, through Rushikulya estuary.

Sampling and Analysis

Sampling was carried out during September and October months of year 2013 from 30 different stations covering all four sectors: Southern (SS), Central (CS), Northern (NS) and outer channel (OC) (Figure 1). Simultaneously, samples were also collected from 11 major rivers streams that drain into Chilika lagoon. Surface water samples were collected using a 5L Niskin bottle. Nutrients [nitrate+nitrite (NO3+NO2), phosphate (PO4), and silicate (SiO2)] were estimated by nutrient auto analyser (SKALAR SANplus ANALYZER) following SKALAR methodology with the precisions of nitrate+nitrite ±0.02, 0.01, and 0.02 |imol, respectively. Temperature and pH and salinity were measured using water quality Checker (TOA DKK, WQC24). Chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen and turbidity data were recorded using optical sensor in the sondes of data buoys (Multi-parameter water quality sonde; 6 Series; DATA BUOY; YSI, USA) deployed at each sector set to provide real-time water quality data at 15-minute intervals. Data of 30 days before and after Phailin were considered for correlation analysis.

Qualitative and quantitative assessment of the benthic community was made by adopting stringent methods described earlier Gosner et al. [19]; Holme et al. [20]. Sea grasses and freshwater macrophyte survey was carried out after three months of the cyclone, and identifications were made using taxonomic keys described earlier Campbell et al. [21]; Kanan et al. [22]. Using float method, long-term river discharge data was recorded everyday between years 2004-2013. Average discharge data of each month was considered for calculation of nutrient flux (discharge x nutrient concentration), as samples for nutrient analyses were collected only twice a month and average values were used for all calculations.

Result and Discussion

Phailin caused a drastic change in salinity gradient and nutrients status of Chilika lagoon. The extent of which varied depended on the flow rate and concentration of nutrients in the riverine inputs.

Physico-chemical parameters

Transparency of the entire lagoon decreased by 31% except SS of the lagoon where it remained almost same due to least freshwater inflow to this sector. The transparency decreased 1.35, 1.50 and 1.41 times in CS, NS, and OC, respectively. However, such significant change between the months (September and October) was not observed during 2012 (Tables 1a &1b). This could be attributed to the inflow of turbid water from rivers as well as mixing of bottom sediment due to wind-induced wave action caused by Phailin. Since the turbid water, inflow was highest in NS (Tables 1a & 1b) (Figure 2), this sector also experienced the lowest transparency Nixon et al. [23]. The pH in SS and CS was observed to increase significantly (Figure 2), which could be due to dominating primary production though there was a decrease, in transparency (Table 1b).

The production might have contributed by re-suspended benthic algae, which have better production than the pelagic algae Annual report [24]. This phenomenon was also evidenced with concurrent increase in chlorophyll-a and dissolved oxygen. Overall pH of the lagoon remained almost same however there was a significant decrease in DO concentration observed, could be attributed to surfing of lagoon water. This observation is unlike to that observed in other ecosystem affected by cyclonic events Bhatacharya et al. [3]; Mitra et al. [4]. Before Phailin, the Chlorophyll-a concentration was 3.2 μg L-1 which increased to 4.1 μg L-1 after Phailin. chlorophyll-a also showed a positive correlation with dissolved oxygen (r=0.28, p=0.0001) indicating that increase in oxygen was due to primary production rather than by surfing of water due to heavy winds Hull et al. [25]. A strong positive correlation (r=0.71, p=0.0001) between chlorophyll-a concentration and turbidity further supported the fact that suspended particulates mostly contained Chlorophyll-a during the study period.

Salinity Variation in Chilika during the Monsoon

The salinity of the Chilika lagoon is predominantly controlled by the sea water exchange and river water discharge. Apart from these, Palur canal, which is connected to the sea through Rushikulya estuary, also raises salinity of the lagoon (Figure 1). Depending upon the freshwater influx of rivers, the salinity regimes were significantly different in each sector, which was evident from the multi-dimensional scale (MDS) plot (Figure 3). River discharge during the high-flow period was compared with average salinity ofthe whole lagoon recorded between years 2004 to 2013. There was a significant influence of river discharge on water quality of Chilika as evident from the regression analysis (r=0.2894, p=0.0144) (Figure 4). It was found that during the high river discharge period in years 2006, 2008 and 2013, the average salinity of the lagoon decreased, considerably.

The salinity recorded in monsoon (July to October) was examined and compared with recent observation from different sectors (Figure 5). Since 1999, during monsoon, the salinity of the lagoon varied between 4.6 to 11.9 with an average of 8.3, whereas during the non-monsoon period the salinity varied between 9.1 to 15 with an average of 12.7. The lowest salinity value observed during 2006 could be attributed to flood events that brought heavy freshwater discharge (Figure 3). Higher salinity of >11 during 2002, 2004 and 2005 could be due to late arrival of monsoon. The lowest salinity during 1999 was the indication of poor exchange of sea water with lagoon, which led to an opening of a new mouth during September 2000 Jayaraman et al. [26].

Spatial variation in salinity due to Phailin

The results of the present study revealed that during October 2013, the average salinity of the entire lagoon reached to a level of 1.72, which was the lowest ever recorded since 1999 for October month. After Phailin, the salinity of the lagoon decreased by 3.3 times and 4.8 times as compared to previous month i.e. September 2013 and previous year October 2012, respectively. Comparison of salinity of October 2013 with September 2013 indicated that the salinity of the NS remained almost same, whereas in OC maximum decrease in the salinity was observed. The decrease in salinity of SS, CS and OC was observed to be 7.1, 2.3, and 8 times respectively ((Figure 2)) (Table 1b). The decline in salinity was not only due to the freshwater riverine discharge but also from the massive rainfall after Phailin. The level of salinity decreased in October 2013 in following order: OC>SS> CS> NS as compared to the average values of October months of last 14 years (since 1999 to 2012) and the magnitude were 7.95, 2.47, 1.93, and 1.29 times, respectively. Since last 14 years, during October, average salinity in the OC, SS, CS and NS were 8, 8.8, 2.4, and 1.4 respectively. However, after Phailin, average salinity in the in the OC, SS, CS and NS decreased to 1.02, 3.56, 1.24, and 1.08, respectively. After Phailin, the salinity in SS and OC was found to be the lowest ever recorded in last 15 years, though there was a natural opening of a new mouth during the Phailin (Forest beat house) about 1 km northward to an earlier existing mouth at Gabakunda. The resultant all time low salinity in the lagoon could be attributed to unidirectional freshwater flow (from lagoon to sea) at the mouth.

Effect of Nutrient Flux from Major Rivers

There was a significant decrease in river nutrient concentration (except silicate) which caused dilution of nutrient concentrations in the lagoon (Table 1b) (Figure 2). A number of studies have reported high variability in the concentrations of these nutrients due to freshwater discharge Acharya et at. [27]; Bond et at. [28]; Sarma et at. [29]. After the Phailin, PO4 concentration in the lagoon showed 2.9 times decrease whereas silicate concentration increased by 2.94 times; being highest in NS and lowest in CS. There was a decrease in nitrate concentration (Table 1) observed after could be due to dilution effect however the increase in nitrate concentration has been reported for other ecosystems such as, Kannada coast Reddy et at. [5], Kalpakam Satpathy et at. [30], southwest coast of India and Sunder ban mangrove wetland ( Bhattacharya et at. [3]. In contrast, few studies have also reported no significant changes in the concentration of dissolved P with change in environmental conditions Meyer et at. [31]. However, the total fluxes of all nutrients were found to be increased 3.8 fold due to Phailin induced heavy rainfall. Total nutrient flux from the Mahanadi catchment contributed ~85% as compared to the western catchment (Table 2). During 2012, the variation in nutrient concentrations between September and October months was not significant (ANOVA, p > 0.05) but in 2013 it was found to be highly significant (ANOVA, p<0.05) indicated drastic changes in water chemistry due to cyclone.

Consequences of changes in water quality on biodiversity

Due to sudden fall in salinity decomposition and decrease of rich sea grass meadows of Halophila ovalis was observed. While, the appearance of freshwater weeds such as Chara sp. and Naja sp. in most parts of the SS could be considered as an effect of changes in salinity regime of the lagoon due to cyclone. Halophila ovalis is highly productive over a salinity range of 15 to 35 and can withstand salinity <10 up to one month Benjamin et al. [13]. Thus, the reduction in salinity after Phailin did not favour Halophila ovalis growth but promoted the proliferation of freshwater weed species. A significant variation in the macro benthic group composition and decrease in abundance were also observed after the Phailin which could be due to sudden drop in salinity and increase in turbidity in the water column Alongi et al. [32]; Murrel et al. [17] (Table 1b).

Among the macro benthic groups, benthic amphipod was found dominant in November 2013 while during the previous year, polychaetes group were dominant [33]. There were number of small juveniles of polychaetes and amphipods were noticed and their biomass was comparatively higher than the previous year (October 2012). This could be due to the presence of more molluscan species. Overall the benthic biomass and abundance was decreased from 44 to 40 gm m-2 and 365 to 241 nos. m-2 respectively after Phailin. Change in the dominant group indicated the possible influence of super cyclone Phailin on the bottom substratum of the Chilika lagoon.

Conclusion

The present study reported the immediate changes in water quality of lagoon due to Phailin such as increasing silicate concentration and dilution of PO4 and NO3+NO2. The salinity of the lagoon, remained lowest in SS and OC compared to last 15 years of record. The overall decrease in salinity and turbidity resulted in loss of sea grass meadows and proliferation of freshwater weeds as well as changes in benthic communities. The present study could be treated as baseline information for further research especially on the changes in water quality and diversity of zooplankton, phytoplankton, and benthic macro fauna after the cyclonic storm. The long-term study on these aspects will be helpful for understanding the recovery period and resilience of the coastal lagoons from such extreme weather events. This data and knowledge would be useful in modelling studies to predict the health of an ecosystem and accordingly management action could be planned to restore the ecosystem balance. As due to climate change the frequency of the extreme weather events like cyclone are likely to be exuberated.

Recommendations

Chilika lagoon, a shallow brackish water lagoon with an average depth of ~1.5 m is influenced by high seasonal fluctuation in water inflows and evaporation, changing its volume, significantly. This decides the residence time of water with nutrients influencing the biogeochemistry of the entire lagoon. High precipitation induced by severe cyclonic storm suddenly changes the water quality which ultimately has an adverse effect on the balance of an ecosystem. The change in water level is likely to affect important littoral macrophytes- lined fish spawning and nursery zones and important habitat for benthic fauna and pelagic component. Water quality of an aquatic ecosystem is a crucial indicator to understand the ecological health. The change in water quality has an immediate effect on the phytoplankton followed by zooplankton and fisheries. Hence, studies must be extended to plankton and their influence on the productivity and fishery diversity. In shallow ecosystem, during cyclonic events, heavy precipitation with river discharge also change the sediment texture and composition which might affect the benthic community structure. Thus long-term studies to understand the recovery period of the ecosystem (in terms of salinity, nutrient level, plank tonic structure, sea grass, benthic communities and fishery) is essential for the sustainable management, lake productivity, perpetual ecosystem services and biodiversity of the lagoon.

Located in the heart of Hong Kong’s central business district, the 36-storey Murray Road project for Henderson Land replaces a multi-storey car park to create an urban oasis adjacent to Chater Garden within a short walking distance to both Central and Admiralty MTR metro stations.

With its base elevated above the ground to shelter courtyards and gardens cultivated with trees and plants in the centre of one of the world’s busiest cities, the design creates new civic plazas that are enveloped by nature.

Echoing the organic forms of the natural world; the redevelopment connects with the adjacent public gardens and parks. These tranquil outdoor areas flow into the generous communal spaces of the interior; the craftsmanship and precision of the curved glass façade enhancing this seamless connectivity between the building’s interiors and the surrounding gardens and city beyond.

The design reinterprets the structural forms and layering of a Bauhinia bud about to blossom. Known as the Hong Kong orchid tree, the Bauhinia x blakeana was first propagated in the city’s botanic gardens above the Murray Road site and its flowering bud features on Hong Kong’s flag.

At the core of the city’s financial district, the project is situated at the east-west / north-south junction of Hong Kong’s network of elevated pedestrian walkways; connecting directly with surrounding gardens, shops and restaurants as well as the offices of leading financial and civic institutions.

A high-tensile steel structure provides very wide span (up to 26m) of naturally lit, column-free, Grade A office space with a 5 metre floor-to-floor height giving maximum flexibility; its vertical core located on the eastern side of the building to optimise views of Chater Garden and the city’s renowned skyline to the west.

Working with the Henderson Land and Arup’s Building Sustainability Team, the design has achieved LEED Platinum and WELL Platinum pre-certification together with the highest 3-Star rating of China’s Green Building Rating Program. The design, procurement and construction targets full certification at occupancy.

The building’s smart management system creates a contactless pathway for all occupants from the street to their workstation that eliminates direct contact with communal surfaces and includes AI-assisted lift controls. Using a mobile phone, contactless smart card or biometric recognition, occupants can enter the building and pass security, call lifts to their office floor and access other zones such as lounge areas and washrooms.

Arranged for access on multiple levels, the large double-height foyer at ground level welcomes staff and visitors with its interplay of natural light, planting and organic forms leading up to the second floor public lobby on the city’s elevated walkway network. Suspended above the canopy of its surrounding tress, the sculptural glass façade of this expansive lobby defines a variety of nested spaces, each refined for purpose and experience.

Designed for intuitive navigation and to accommodate evolving patterns of working with enhanced workplace flexibility, the colour palettes of these finely detailed spaces differentiate key destinations within the tower.

Located on the refuge floor, the Sky Garden is an outdoor recreational space with running track and an aquaponics planting network that acts as an effective biological air-purifying filter by consuming contaminants.

The banqueting hall at the top of the tower offers panoramic views of the city’s surrounding skyline. Hosting a variety of public and corporate events, its glazed roof and façade will ensure this space becomes one of the city’s most memorable venues.

Designed to withstand the region’s powerful summer typhoons, the façade is comprised of 4-ply, double-laminated, double-curved insulated glass units – the first of their kind in Hong Kong – to effectively insulate the building and reduce its cooling load as well as build resilience.

Hybrid ventilation is controlled by the building’s automated management system and enables all office levels to be naturally ventilated. This natural ventilation can be supplemented when required with mechanical dehumidification and filtration to further enhance the indoor environment and air quality.

The building’s air quality monitoring system will detect the degree of occupancy in any interior and automatically adjust indoor air temperature, humidity and fresh air volume to meet demand. These smart systems learn to accurately predict daily occupancy trends to optimise energy demand, ensuring increased efficiencies with lower energy consumption.

Two weather stations installed at street level and roof level will monitor real-time outdoor conditions including PM10, PM2.5, ozone, daylight (solar irradiation), wind speed (m/s), rainfall (mm), temperature (oC), humidity (%) and noise (dB). These weather stations will inform occupants of outdoor air quality and are connected to the building’s automated management system to adjust the tower’s hybrid ventilation as required, ensuring the optimum supply of high quality outdoor air.

The redevelopment also incorporates a solar responsive ventilator (SRV) along the western perimeter of each floor to enhance the comfort of occupants. Powered by photovoltaics, the low speed, silent SRV creates a channel of air that has the ability to adjust solar radiative heat to the perimeter zone for further comfort.

A 26% reduction in electricity demand will be achieved with the use of smart chiller plant optimization, high-efficiency HVAC equipment and daylight sensors that reduce artificial lighting during periods of sufficient natural light.

A top-down construction method is employed to accelerate the redevelopment programme on-site by implementing deep basement and above-ground construction at the same time.

With construction works beginning last year and its procurement targeting embodied carbon reductions as well as the use of recycled materials, 2 Murray Road looks to the future with the integration of advanced design, construction and operational technologies.

Yo! hehehehe I like this batch of questions too XD 

I’ll answer the first half now, and the other half later after classes get out for me!

Lemme see what I can manage: 

64: Where were your scholar’s parent(s) or guardian(s) born?

Lillie: Lillie’s dad was born in Yamagata prefecture in Japan, and her mother is a second generation Japanese American from central California. 

Vivian&Darcy: Their biological parents (out of the three) were both born then the UK, and their parent’s partner was born in Melbourne, Australia. 

Flora: Her mother is British and her bio-father (divorced and deceased) was Irish. Her stepmother is of Indian descent but was born and raised in Whales. 

Abigail: Her biological parents were born in Mexico and Texas, but lived in northern Mexico. Her foster parents were born in New York but her foster mother is half Korean and her foster father is Jamaican American. (They moved to Texas, and then Arizona for the warmer climate and a desire to live in a quieter, more natural environment)

65: Is there anything about your scholar’s past that they don’t want anyone to know? 

Lillie: Her deadname, basically.

Vivian&Darcy: Vivian hasn’t got any, but Darcy, like Lillie, would rather not have his deadname spread around. He’s far more comfortable in his new body though, than Lillie, but no matter how much you physically feel good, it sucks to have people disregard you and undermine you.

Flora: for the sake of Angus’s privacy and her own, she prefers no one knows she has a child. When she meets, by chance, Angus’s biological father a few years after she’d been attending Arlington and finds out he’s transferred to the same school via a scholarship, she is apprehensive about telling him, but manages to work out an agreement with him to share custody so long as he keeps quiet about the situation. 

Abigail: If she could have her way, she wouldn’t let you know what she ate for breakfast. Mainly, she doesn’t want people to know her personal life, she wants them to appreciate her for the character she is on stage and her presence in the spotlight, but wishes for her past with her family and current relationship with Flora to be untouched and protected as much as possible. 

66: Has your scholar ever kissed anyone?

Lillie: Nope, purely clean lips here. Familial kisses don’t count, and she’s never really been desired or sought by anyone before that was of the gender she prefers so it’s kind of rough on her. Hopefully Arlington will change that, because there’s a pair of lips named Tadashi Nakano that she is dying to taste.

Vivian: She had a girlfriend who is now just a close friend. (her friend got into the T.V. acting business and is currently the star of a teen mystery drama on a British kids show channel) 

Darcy: He kissed a girl for a dare once, and had a boyfriend for 4 days that ended up being one of those “I thought I liked you but i guess i kind of didn’t, and this is awkward now” kind of people. 

Bonus: Flora kissed her kid’s dad quite a lot that one specific time, and she and Abigail kiss around 8 times a day on average. 

67: What is your scholar’s favorite holiday? 

Lillie: Lillie likes Halloween the best. There weren’t many holidays her family celebrated, and Halloween was one of the few they did. She uses it as an excuse to cosplay because she can’t afford to go to real conventions. 

Vivian&Darcy: They both love Valentines day and go all out romantic for their significant others or crushes. 

Flora: Her and Angus’s birthday. Her parents travelled the world with her so she knows of too many holidays to count, let alone choose one. And so, she figures that her day of birth and her son’s are probably the best ones there are because they’re special days that only the two of them can fully appreciate

Abigail: Halloween and Christmas both. This chick is like ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ in human form. 

68: What do they enjoy dressing up as on Halloween?  If they don’t dress up or go trick-or-treating, then what do they do instead?

Lillie: She uses Halloween as an excuse to cosplay and has a roster of anime characters that she’d like to cosplay next. She chooses a character from a different anime each year. Recently she went as Rock Lee, and her older sister went as (a very unfit) Might Guy from Naruto.

Vivian&Darcy: ever since being born they’ve gone for halloween in things that come in pairs, from salt and pepper shakers at 2 years old to Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett this year (their plan for this year is to run a meat pie, and other baked goods, cafe from within their parents home.) 

When not dressing up which is rare, they have been hired to host children’s parties in their local neighbourhood (also part of why they hold a themed cafe or barbeque each year). 

Flora: She seldom had time for Halloween as a kid seeing as she was constantly travelling but her favourite country’s practice of Halloween is Britain because of how extravagant they can get, and now that she’s dating Abby she’s learning about the history and significance of ‘The Day of the Dead’. She usually just ends up dressing like a witch with the same costume each year but accessorised differently.

Abigail: La Dia de los Muertos, which isn’t really ‘Halloween’ as most western countries view it, was always her favourite time of the year. In an otherwise rather lacking childhood, most of her good memories came from the festival. Her foster parents upon adopting her researched and studied how to help her keep in touch with her cultural history and tradition, and helped her set up a shrine in their own house so she could still celebrate her Abuela and her older brother who died when she was 6. 

69: It’s your crush’s birthday!  What does your scholar get/do for them? 

Lillie: Aside from generally stressing and not knowing what to do, she probably cooks him something and offers it to him with shaking hands, most likely looking away. Tadashi, being who he is, makes a joke to ask if it’s poisoned which earns him an irritated glare. Then he nearly cries at how good it tastes. 

Vivian: She takes you out on a date. Where do you want to eat? What do you want to wear? You wanna see a movie? Late night walk in the park? You got it. She’s on it. Already bought tickets a week ago. Reserved a private table in a restaurant. Gets her parent’s driver to take you places. 

Darcy: he’s similar to Vivian, but he does things more personalised like. He sneakily susses out what you want and like all year beforehand and does stuff like make a ghost profile on amazon or pintrest to see what things are in your wishlist etc. He’d probably also make a mixtape of songs that you and him like, or that are important to you (hard to do in his case, since he’s trying to woo Axel though). Also, he’s DTF (Down to fuck FUN!). Just saying. 

Flora: Birthdays are BIG deals for her, so she, like Darcy, finds out things you like and want. She is more direct about it though and asks you to your face what you want, or what you would like. She also is good at cake decoration and likes making personalised designs for them. She can also sing ‘happy birthday’ in 4 languages, and on occasion has been able to get ahold of foreign gifts from places she’s visited overseas before. 

Abigail: For the very first birthday she spends with you, She puts on a whole personalised performance for you! (non sexually, of course, this is the kind where your parents and kids can be invited too). She gets caterers to help with food, and she buys out a venue of whatever size she needs and you and your whole family and as many friends as you can fit are invited. 

For later on in your relationship this only happens again during milestones like 5 years anniversary or something (it’s not a secret, I’m keeping her and Flora together forever). On off years, she just cuddles with you and spoils you with shopping sprees and they buy huge donut boxes or chocolate sample boxes and watch trashy/cheesy foreign romances. 

70: How would your scholar react to seeing their crush crying? 

Lillie: If somehow, by some, horrific, ungodly force, you managed to make Tadashi of all people cry, She would probably gently ask him if she can help at all. she knows he’s a little bristly, and doesn’t always appreciate her over-empathy, but she loves him a lot and wants to help him. 

She gives him the option to turn her away if he needs time alone but wants him to know that she is available whenever he is ready to talk. If he is, by chance, ready, she sits by him and holds him closely, either listening to him talk, or listening to him cry. Kisses and head scratches are also inevitable. 

Vivian: She is the person who runs up to you and holds you, asking you what’s wrong. I’m apprehensive to go further because I don’t know much about her crushes yet (Claire and Alistair) so i’ll have to wait and see. I feel like Vivi would probably react slightly differently depending on how her crush displays grief, but on a base level, she’s a hugger and sweet-talker to get you to calm down.

Darcy: It’s time to FIGHT. Who does he need to knock the fuck out? The first few times, his crush (Axel) is probably too busy holding him back to be crying anymore. After a few more times, Darcy is still raving mad, but he keep it in long enough to responsibly evaluate the situation. Still probably ready for low-key revenge, but he’s not as trigger happy with his fists anymore. 

Flora: She calmly asks her to walk her through what happened. A future lawyer at heart, she can and will do whatever she can to make sure Abby is done right by via compensation or proper and called for retribution. However, she is fully aware of the fact that sometimes Abigail gets into trouble in the first place because of her own faults. Abby isn’t very good at making friends, but good at making enemies. Definitely not an innocent little angel. Her girlfriend is basically her #1 test client, because of how she is, socially and how much legal drama the celebrity life brings on top of that.

Abby: Abby isn’t good with emotions. She’s not even good with her own, let alone knowing how to help Flora when she’s down. It’s usually the other way around. When Flora is upset, which is very very rare, Abigail tends to leave her alone or to sit quietly by her, super anxious and not knowing what to do at all. Flora doesn’t resent this, because she knows Abby’s limitations and inabilities. She tends to prefer to cry it out until she’s done crying anyway, and typically feels better afterwards. 

71: How would your scholar react to seeing their enemy crying?

Lillie: She laughs. Quietly, of course, and to herself, but she’s typically satisfied if things aren’t going well for an enemy. Of course, unless the situation is extreme or a special case. But there is one specific enemy in mind (an OC) whom she’d happily drop kick into the sun if she could, so seeing her cry would be fine by her. 

Vivian: She ignores them and moves on. She doesn’t care enough to tempt them when they’re in a good mood, and she certainly doesn’t want to offer her kindness to someone who will probably use it against her later. 

Darcy: Same as his sister, but he also probably then asks what happened, usually out of general curiosity. 

Flora: She has very few enemies, and being a future lawyer, she is training herself to have less of a bias when it comes to justice (the exception is if you mess with Abigail). She’ll ask if she can help in anyway, or at the very least she’ll ask what’s wrong. Also, she has a deep maternal instinct in the first place, and wants to help out as many as she can manage.

Abby: Abby ignores them like the twins do, not only because of how bad she is around crying, but she might have been the reason some people have cried. 

She has gotten into fist fights with people before for her general inability to chill out, and especially if it’s a person she dislikes. She was almost expelled once for grabbing Karolina by the tie and ripping her shirt collar, and has given Axel a wedgie on more than one occasion. Naturally she and Darcy hate each other because Darcy tends to get too protective over Axel. It’s a big, ugly, sad mess.

Intro

Third time’s the charm! Right….? It’s an inside joke, don’t worry about it if you don’t understand.

The following is my best attempt at creating a concise version of what I eventually blogged. Essentially… this post is my Reddit-sized 2k+ word version of what is an 11k+ word journey into finding these numbers. If anything I do in the following that seems erratic, the blog is highly likely to contain an explanation for what did.

I believe I can mathematically “prove” there was a red herring within their Quarter 2 report and that Quarter 3 should show a minimum of 50% Gross Sales growth from Pure Sunfarms.

Starter Math

1,100 x 2.79 x 1.89 = 5,800kg sold Retail

5,800 / .57 = 10,175kg sold in Total

10,175 - 5,800 = 4,375kg sold Wholesale

Looking at VFF’s 2019 Quarter 4 report we can find that PSF sold “over 1,100 kilograms” branded as retail. This would be their first full quarter selling in retail, by the way. The following Quarter 1 headline reported a 179% sequential growth in retail branded sales with the Quarter 2 headline following up with 89% after that.

Our Quarter 2 report also indicates that “57% of kilograms sold” were retail. From that we can conclude the total and wholesale amounts. We are additionally provided with a very useful number, the “All-in” Cost Per Gram, coming in at $0.84/g.

From these numbers above we can find that the Gross Profit from Wholesale is $0.14/g and Gross Profit from Retail is $0.64/g. This $0.64/g is where our red herring “lies.”

Love a good double entendre.

Not-So-Starter Math

Fixed Cost + Profit = Gross Sales

MSRP = Gross sales + Retailer (OCS) Gross Margins

Final Consumer Cost = MSRP + Back-End Taxes

To find this red herring, I needed to break down the $0.64 into more specific numbers. Being that VFF has a unified pricing strategy in place, we actually ARE able to break it down for even more details using the above equation(s).

We start this equation experience from above by grabbing our known $0.84/g CoGs and our mathematically found tax burden of $1.11/g. These two numbers allow us to determine a Fixed Cost (FC) of $1.95/g for this quarter.

Our second variable we can figure out uses reports from the OCS’s first year. From these reports we can determine their retail segment produces 36% Gross Margins. Retail is the key word there for anyone checking in on me.

This next part was much more difficult to determine and requires some educated assumptions to be played out. I might be presenting the math in this specific fashion but it was pretty much all happening at once.

First number for this we will grab is $117.60 for a full ounce straight from the OCS. My initial approach involved the use of the 13% HST, sales tax, from that cost. This weirdly gives an MSRP of $104.07 though.

Using a quote from Mike D about going to retail at the “black market price of $99 per ounce,” after so much failed math, I began a new anchor point of $99.99 being the MSRP anchor point to figure out to see what is actually being charged between the MSRP and the consumer.

When I finally arrived at 4.75% as the additional “tax” amount, the numbers in all the equations started working rounding-ly perfect with each other. From this determination, I will now add this 4.75% to the 13% HST that we already know for what I’ll call the Back-End Taxes (BET) in use of the math that follows.

With all the need-to-know variables in place now I found this:

28-gram - $0.36/g profit - $1.20/g net - 30% Margins

14-gram - $1.03/g profit - $1.87/g net - 55% Margins

7-gram - $1.37/g profit - $2.21/g net - 62% Margins

3.5 -gram - $1.61/g profit - $2.45/g net - 65.7% Margins

1 gram - $1.96/g profit - $2.80/g net - 70% Margins

Little-Bit-Deeper Math

(LF/ppg x 0.80) + (SF/ppg x 0.20) = $0.64/g net profit

I’ll break it down a little bit to how I used it further as well.

(X * 0.8) + (Y * 0.2) = 0.64

X = (0.64 - (Y * 0.2) / 0.8

Y = (0.64 - (X * 0.8) / 0.2

The equation at top of this section is the actual first equation that started this all off. We were provided information that Q2 had 80% of their volume being the Large Format product segment. It’s important to note they specifically classify and record these segments as such.

The Large Format (LF) and Small Format (SF) product segments. More specifically, that the LF has the 14-gram and 28-gram options while the SF contains 1-gram, 3.5 gram and the 7-gram offerings.

Now from this equation above I determined a $0.40/g Large Format profit and $1.60/g Small Format profit. What I see of this finding:

Small Format Net = $2.44/g

Small Format Profit = $1.60/g

In my opinion, the small format profit being so close to the profit per eighth is no accident. The profit margins are simply harmonized as a unit. It’s why they classified it that way.

This is a 30 year experience growing-based company hitting perfect stride for this product segment offering and is likely to always net them right around that sweet 65% gross margins or $1.60 profit per gram.

Makes business-goals sense to me.

Large Format Net = $1.24/g

Large Format Profit = $0.40/g

We found the red herring. If it’s unclear, having a $0.40/g profit in a two product segment offering where one nets $0.36/g profit and the other nets $1.03/g profit, something should seem amiss just in general right there.

To back this claim up further, one needs to simply look into the timeline of releases of this new product segment they’ve introduced. The 28-gram format hitting full stride in availability into a coincidentally timed “stock up” phase of the pandemic. Leading it to be 75.2% of the total volume for Quarter 2.

That’s right more math! We used that weighted ratio formula from above, but in a different way, to figure that 94% of the Large Format was the 28-gram. What makes me so excited about this though, is simply that the 14-gram format was in it’s infancy of availability.

You can browse the PureSunfarms twitter for great details on exactly when everything is, or has been, becoming available. Should you go scrolling, you should find many indicators that point to the 14-gram variant being essentially near full availability in June/July time frame, while the 28-gram format hit stride in April.

The weight the $0.36/g profit has on the Large Format profit per gram should be visibly changing in your mind right now as this company is more than likely to have a future harmonized vision for this Large Format segment as well.

Quarter 3’s VFF report is for July - September as a reference.

Quotes and Tidbits that Guide Us (Aka the info used to apply the math we figured out)

VFF’s switch GAAP accounting method and “trimming” of is books is a great thing for looking into the future. No need to do some weird write-down for your missed sale guess, no valuing “trim” as anything over $0. Just clean balance sheets for growth going forward.

Quarter 2 was the first pivot quarter to full have the new Large Format offerings and their competitive pricing approach on display across their entire line. Timeline release of the the 14-gram format, 2.0 products and adding Quebec brings an excitement for both gross margins and volume going forward.

Beyond the appreciation for the accounting method as an investor and the speculatively exciting future for Pure Sunfarms, we also are provided with some information that relates to why I even did all that math in the first place.

To start, we were told that the Large Format segment dropped to “60% in July, and even down to 45%”-50% for the start of August as well. Immediately giving that $1.60 profit for that Small Format segment substantially more weight to the overall gross margins.

Additionally, “July was a record month for sale of Pure Sunfarms products by the Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia provincial boards.” First month of Quarter 3 confirmed to be record breaking in volume again is undoubtedly a great sign.

When PSF entered a retail product segment the first time, with flower, their first month they commanded a “16% market share” for the OCS by kilograms AND sales. This was even prior to the full implementation of their competitive pricing strategy that we see now. New 2.0 rollout says hello.

Since that induction to retail, they’ve continued on to be the “top-selling brand of dried flower” by volume in the OCS every single quarter.

In Q4 of last year the illegal market was 81% of sales in Ontario was the report. Now there are reports that “legal cannabis market now accounts for 50.5%” of pot spending in Canada. Pure Sunfarms strategy, as mentioned earlier, is to go at the black market prices to increase the pie that is available while putting price pressure on the legal market. Seems to be working.

Wholesales was seeing an “uptick in sales activity to other licensed producers” was commented on August 13th. On August 17th, PSF and Adastra announced a 6,000kg purchase contract over 6 months. The assumption is 1,000kg in August, and 1,000kg in September.

Thoughts behind the “Bear-ish” outlook.

Wholesale Sales:

An “uptick” in wholesales sales includes the Adastra deal that Mike new was imminent. Meaning a likely approximate of 4,500-5,000kg for wholesales being that 4,375kg was the baseline. We’ll use 4,875kg because it’s fun and relatively low impact at $0.14 a gram. They are able to offer the cheapest wholesale tho and that’s going to have benefits.

Retail Branded Sales:

Due to recorded breaking volume in July, the first month of this Q3, the continued decrease in black market percentage and the rollout of their two new strains Pink Kush and D Bubba, I think staying on the same sequential growth ratio trend seems fair. 179%, 89%, 44%.

A 44% growth in retail volume hits 8,352kg for Retail.

Of that, we know the Large Format is on trend to have less weight on the gross margins and profit this go around. To stay on the higher side of anything we are told, we’ll go a 62%/38% volume split. Additionally with the roll out timing of the 14-gram format, I believe an 80%/20% 28-gram/14-gram split seems rationally reasonable.

Thoughts behind the “Good Times” outlook.

Wholesale Sales:

Mike is particular about his words and if he said an “uptick” before an inked deal should mean they were trending close to the same wholesale volume PLUS the Adastra deal. Aggressively, but low impact, we’ll go with 6,100kg for this outlook.

Retail Branded Sales:

They continue to break their volume records, release more products, are available in more locations, have their stabilized pricing strategy in place, 2.0 has started shipping and their two new strains of Pink Kush and D Bubba drawing in a lot of love can only mean one thing. 11,000kg for this part. (or maybe I’m just giving a really good range of Q3-Q4 possibilities).

Nope. Definitely 11,000kg.

Staying on the hype track, we are going to call for a 48%/52% split of Large/Small Formats, and a 65%/35% split of 28-gram/14-gram format to really show that red herring who’s boss.

Final Remarks:

I hope no one forgot that we are dealing with rounded numbers to the Hundred Thousands and a starting point of “over 1,100 kilograms.” Some elbow nudging and definite guessing went into attempting to reverse some basic math. I do believe to very likely be close to the basic math they used to present us the information they do in the reports. Each decision has a detailed reasoning though, per the blog.

Also, of course also the “Good Times” was simply what I believe to be a realistic, if not low-end, guess for what Quarter 4 likely can show with just a couple of relatively minor adjustments to where the volume comes from.

Additionally having Quebec, 30% of the Canadian population, in their crosshairs, the release of their 2.0 products hitting into steam going in to Quarter 4 and valuing their trim at $0 can only mean “Good Times” in the margins, volume and revenues going forward. Right?

Quarter 2 was Pure Sunfarms “sixth consecutive quarter of positive net income” and the “seventh consecutive quarter of positive EBITDA.” No “adjusted” in those quotes.

How many companies can say that?

Raymond James is long and going longer with their stock price aim in the $20’s. The CEO has just under 20% of the total shares in addition to 10% of YOLO’s portfolio being VFF.

There is already a low float as it is for this stock and the big players are all stocked up. As soon as retail starts to realize, she definitely runs quick as a stock if you’ve ever watched it.

VFF is currently valued at about (CAD) $383 MILLION.

APHA valued at $1.7 BILLION

ACB at $1.25 BILLION

CRON at $2.46 BILLION

CGC/WEED at $7.84 BILLION

I know they all have additional factors at play, and a fair point was made to me that I should be more clear in a price determination reasoning.

As such I’m not specifically saying a pricing point for this post, as I’m doing more diligence to present that based upon further logics/maths. Especially because all the math in the world cant predict what the market will do.

I’ll simply state though that this striking difference in valuations seem bound to close in gap, and I’m not saying I think the other companies will come down in value. An important note is that I largely believe that near all of PSF’s valuation as full transferred to VFF already.

There may be some of the value floating out there that will increase VFF’s valuation in “finally” points, but the inevitability of VFF owning Pure Sunfarms outright is even something Raymond James is willing to publicly state as an eventual fact. Just look at EMH’s stock price. How can you attribute only VFF’s full PSF valuation being 57%+ and then….look at EMH place the equivalent 42% value…?

No. I don’t believe so. In the eyes of the market, the value of PSF has mostly moved already.

The eyes of the market and eyes of the law don’t always time up, but they usually relate eventually. Just look at Moderna, got a $100 Million contract and has only gone down since.

Buy the rumor, was the saying?

Lastly, the veggie business historically has shown an approximate $1-$2 value effect in stock price as a general note simply for thoroughness.

Day 7, and the final day of @khoc-week

We’ve come to the end of yet another wonderful KH OC Week! Once again I had a lot of fun participating in this event, and it definitely got me writing more than I have in the past few months. I don't know if I’ll end up ever using Everest, Kiti, Taffy, or Dante again in my ongoing fic, but Tagen and Lief I definitely have plans for. Their stories have already been set in motion. Maybe I’ll give the other four a cameo, since i’ve definitely grown more fond of them over the course of this week. If not, it was nice to shine a spotlight on them this week, at least a little. 

As for the prompt for today, I always love going into character connections, because it's fun to look at past, present, and future connections they have. While I didn't really tease much, I did leave some hints about what's to come. So, until (hopefully) next year, and enjoy!

Day 7 Aug 7 Wayfinder: Connections between each character, old connections they no longer have, and possible hints at new connections as well

✦Lief had a few friends before she met Tagen, including having known Kiti. But if there’s one friendship that stuck with her from that time, it was her old friend Arour. It was Arour that really ignited the fighting spirit inside Lief, and helped her to trust in, and believe in herself. Arour gave Lief the small metal choker she wears, in the hopes it would always remind her to be tough. Sadly, Arour and Lief drifted apart. Arour joining a party and not having as much time for those outside of it, and Lief meeting Tagen and going on to form a party of her own. Lief wore the choker throughout her time leading her and Tagens old party and still wears it to this day. For Lief, it has a lot of sentiment, and she definitely keeps it close now in her new party, while she searches for her missing party members. 

✦Tagen can't remember if he really had any close friends before Lief, but if he did they must not have been worth remembering. He and Lief were fast friends, and in days before they started the party, the two would do everything together. Lief would end up dragging Tagen on missions, introducing him to her friends, and inviting him to do events together. At some point, Lief found out about Tagens, well… lack of other real friends, and wanted to do something for him to make sure he knew they were real friends. She ended up not only getting him what became his signature shades, but also they ended up splitting a pair of heart earrings, Tagen wearing one, and Lief wearing the other. After their ‘falling out’, Tagen no longer wears the earring that matches Lief’s and even left his shades behind at his flat for a stint. However, the day he decided to put them on, mostly because he needed them to help look for rare items, was the day he found his new friends. Or rather, they found him. While Tagen has begun to wear the shade regularly again, the earring sits forgotten somewhere in his flat. The tradition still lives on, however, with Tagen on one of his new friends, who he is really close to, splitting a pair of simple studs between them.

✦Everest is not much for sentimental items, but definitely treasure time and memories the most. During his time in Tagen and Lief’s party, he spent a good amount of time forging friendships and strong bonds with a good bit of his fellow party mates. He also spent a fair bit of time with Lief, Tagen, and Kiti, some of his closest friends within the party.  While he is still in touch with a few friends of his from the old party, and he even joined Kiti in their new party, Everest lost contact with a good amount of people when the party fell apart. Now he holds onto those memories, and treasures them even more because it helps ease the ache when he finds he's missing his old pals.

✦During the time between knowing Lief, and joining the party, Kiti had a lot of self-doubt about who they were. They only really started to fight that self-doubt thanks to their friends Taffy and Dante. Kiti was already good friends with them, but Kiti really became close with them as they all grew as people. Taffy really helped Kiti come out of their shell, and encouraged them to embrace who they were. The two became thick as thieves, and Kiti was the first to hear about taffy’s feelings for Dante, and Vise versa, which they thought was funny, but they didn't want to betray either of their friends' trust. Kiti and Taffy now have complimentary chokers, which they both still wear to this day. The choker means a lot to Kiti, not just because it's something to connect her to Taffy, but because it was actually Dante who got the chokers for the two. When they left to find a new party, Kiti was surprised but grateful that Everest wanted to come with them, and now they don't know what they would have done without him, or if they would have been brave enough to actually join another party if he wasn't there. Even though they aren't in the same party anymore, Kiti still meets up with their old friends pretty regularly, even dragging Everest along so they can all catch up. 

✦Dante, much like Everest, treasures time and memories more than sentimental items. However, he understands the value other people see in a meaningful gift. Dante actually met Kiti via a mutual friend, before he met Taffy. However, once the two met Taffy, they were all fast friends, with Taffy and Dante becoming partners somewhere down the line. It was actually Kiti the helped him work up the nerve to admit his feelings to Taffy, and if it weren't for them, he and Taffy might not have ever become partners. Now he couldn't imagine his life without her in it. The three friends remained close throughout their time in the old party, and despite being a different party than Kiti now, the three are still great friends. After everything that happened,  Dante is very protective of his friend and partner. Most of all it makes him happy that Taffy gets to still see her best friend. He would do anything to see Taffy smile.  

✦Taffy couldn't imagine her life without Kiti or Dante in it. Taffy was super shy with them at first, but soon they both helped her come out of her shell, bringing out the joy and happiness in her heart. Taffy found she was always wearing a smile when she was around them and looked forward to seeing them every day. If it hadn't been for Kiti helping her work through her anxiety, Taffy probably would have never tried to talk to Dante about her feelings. Taffy was always happy to help push Kiti to be more confident, and she always appreciated how Kiti returned it in kind. She also always really valued the support Dante would give her. She was both surprised and ecstatic when Dante gave her and Kiti the chokers, and treasures hers a lot. Taffy really valued the friendship she had with those two even more during their time in the old party. She values it even more not that she and Dante are in a different party from Kiti, and looks forward to meeting up to catch up even more, including when Everest comes along. She is just glad both Dante and Kiti are still in her life.

Little By Little Jewellery

Little By Little Jewellery is an ethical jewellery brand that advocates a transparent and responsible supply chain. Inspired by the natural beauty found in food, each piece of jewellery is lovingly made from gold, silver and touches of enamel. The jewellery is designed in the UK and crafted by a well-established jewellery producer in Lima, Peru. Since its establishment, the factory has employed people with no prior technical experience and trained them in jewellery production.

SAYA DESIGNS

SAYA Designs is a hair accessories brand that makes whimsical handcrafted pieces from recycled wood. The brand’s founder, Victoria, was inspired by a deep love for nature and a growing awareness of environmental issues, in particular deforestation. When I met her a few weeks ago in Oxford, she discussed her desire to reflect the stories behind objects used in the manufacturing process.

For example, while searching for ways to sustainably source wood for her designs, Victoria came across Made & Wayan, wood sculptors who dig up and recycle root wood from old commercial plantations across Indonesia. These roots are left behind by large-scale tree harvesters and take hundreds of years to decompose, adding little value to the soil. SAYA Designs uses this material, which would otherwise simply waste away.

Each SAYA Hairpiece is inspired by the rich flora and fauna of Indonesia, where Victoria has lived. These stunning pieces are hand carved by skilled Balinese artisans, with whom Victoria regularly keeps in touch and whom she visits every year. The pieces are then finished with natural wax and oils. The artisans have flexible work conditions with Victoria and receive a fair pay.

ISA/III Oc S.A.S

ISA/III Oc S.A.S was founded by Isabel Ortiz Cárdenas in Bogotá, Colombia. Fascinated by  the diversities of cultures in Colombia, she decided to embark on a journey to capture her colourful roots into urban handbags. Preserving rural tradition and its high quality in her designs, Isabel has nevertheless found a way to create a new look that fits well in urban settings.

Isabel´s aim is to create a simple product, a valuable long-lasting handcrafted piece that reflects beauty and quality. Her designs do not follow trends, but rather offer a product that captures histories and traditions of her country.
