XENO DOESN'T HAVE TO PROVE ANYTHING TO SPIRIT THAT SHE DOESN'T THINK HE'S ALREADY DONE A PRETTY GOOD JOB OF PROVING, OVER THE YEARS. He especially doesn't have to prove that he would kill for her child. Because Rzra would kill for them, and that's enough.

I've done it before.

Spirit knows — she knows all of Xeno's ghosts. She doesn't even fault him – how could she, when she helped Harry kill Dick Hayes? But to hear him blurt this so carelessly is too much for her to stomach. She turns back to the dirty dishes, somewhat disgusted.

"I don't want you here when Ezra comes back," she says to a plate she's scrubbing. Damn Xeno if that isn't the end of this.

When Spirit says stop it and don't be ridiculous, Xeno's brain interprets it as Spirit not believing him. So he doubles down, still convinced he somehow has to prove himself to Spirit and that this — swearing he would kill for Alex — is the way to do it.

"You don't believe me? You don't think I could? I could! I would! I mean it — I'd do anything for Alex, I'd kill any asshole who tries to hurt them, I'd freeze their fucking hearts, I've done it before—"

Not for Alex. For Wesley. It is this confession, along with Spirit's I want you to go home, that finally makes him shut the fuck up.

Xeno clamps his mouth shut, the shadow of a muscle flexing in his jaw. Home. He has one of those now. It's not okay if he destructs and blows everything up. There's not just Alex and Spirit, Ezra and Theo, to think about. There's Wesley.

"Fuck." His hands are shaking. He forgets sometimes, despite the evidence before him, that Spirit isn't twenty-five anymore. They aren't who they used to be. "I'm sorry."
