“Hahaha R-Ryuk, stop! Y-you-ahh!-idiot!” Light gasped, trying to push the Shinigami away. His hair was disheveled, his usual calm demeanor shattered by the absurdity of the situation.

“Why would I stop now?” Ryuk said between cackles, his grin wider than ever. “This is the most fun I’ve had in years!”

Eventually, Ryuk relented, floating backward with a gleeful smirk. Light slumped in his chair, gasping for breath, glaring daggers at the Shinigami.

“Seriously what's gotten into you,” Light muttered, straightening his clothes and running a hand through his hair in a futile attempt to restore his dignity.

Ryuk chuckled, still grinning from ear to ear. “Oh, come on, Light. Admit it! That was fun. For me, at least!”

Light shot him a murderous look. “If you ever do that again, I’ll write your name in the Death Note.”

Ryuk cackled once more, completely unfazed. “Oh, Light… as if you’d get rid of me. Who else would make you laugh like that?”

Light rolled his eyes, muttering under his breath, but Ryuk only continued to float around the room, still amused by his newfound discovery.

And though Light would never admit it out loud, he knew he’d have to stay on his guard from now on - because Ryuk had found yet another way to torment him.

For the purpose of these questions, and this ask game in general, canon is manga. Keeping that in mind, plus the fact I haven't read manga arc 2 in a longggg while, here's my answer:

7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?

This is tough. I don't particularly hate any character. But if there was a character I was neutral towards but started to dislike because of fanfics, specifically because of their portrayal in fanfics: Soichiro.

I started to dislike him when a lot of the fics I read treated him as some sort of morally righteous person whose viewpoint is never wrong. Soichiro Is Always Right TM. Soichiro Is Best Father TM.

And Fanon Soichiro? Thus ends up as the moral mouth piece of the writer/viewer. So. many. preachy dialogues.

This is the man who was willing to shoot a blank at his son at zero distance. Allowed for 64 fucking cameras in his son's room, including a camera in his home's bathroom. Decided to isolate himself at the same time as Light because heaven forbid he control his overwhelming emotions, stay out there and help prove his son innocent faster

Soichiro has layers. He is good at his job and not father of the year. A person can be both. His decisions... well, he could have done better. This man puts duty above all else.

He'd fit well as a Stark in Westeros. Without the family loyalty bit. Take that as you will.

9. worst part of canon

Several. The casual misogyny shown by all characters towards women. Including, amusingly enough, women themselves. L's 64 cameras in Light's room. Light's lines where he's just being a funny and goofy guy who talks about tickling others just the right way. L's death (I read halfway through second arc just waiting for L to come back. He didn't.)

However, the worst part of canon (for me. this is an important distinction), was Light's death. I hated Light's death in the manga. It was so pathetic. So raw. Pitiful. It made me pity Light.

And I never wanted to do that.

I would rather Light won and lived a sad, lonely, existence where he could never achieve the world he wanted despite all the people he's killed and all the sacrifices he's made. Irony at its finest. I would rather Light lived imprisoned, isolated and slowly forgotten for life, as cruel as it sounds.

But we get the manga death. And I pity Light Yagami, unable to comprehend the immorality of his actions, unable to even understand he had become the very thing he hated (and killed). He dies begging Ryuk not to kill him. In full view of the Task Force and SPK, with no privacy for dignity or shame.

So yes, I think the worst part is the ending. I think manga Light deserved better (or worse, depending on how you look at it).

I'm aware this is a controversial opinion, however that's how it is for me and others are allowed to have differing views <3

SOOOOOOO FUCKING HYPE legit probably my favorite cliffhanger in all of one piece MANNNNNNNNN

like. listen. AUGHHHHH so much. the 'chapter 800+ secret family reveal' WOULD NOT WORK in like 99.9% of stories but it flows PERFECTLY in one piece bc there is such a precedent for this sort of thing!! for the sort of behavior where you never ever talk about your 'real' (biological) family or where you came from bc IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT!!! OF ONE PIECE!!!!! that the characters get to CHOOSE where they belong and who their family is

(also this reveal happening so late makes the sabo reveal - the 'chapter 500+ secret amnesiac brother reveal' - seem practically early lol)

and like, obviously this theme of choosing your family is handled a lot - like everything with ace, who does exactly this ^ and yet is still burdened by his blood

but ok what I'm getting at is that in basically any other story, a reveal about one of the main characters coming this late would be suuuuuch a stupid asspull, but in this case, it's one of the best writing decisions in the story in ages

like half the straw hats have mysterious/unknown biological origins - nami, zoro (outside of SBSs), franky, sanji (before now), brook (ig lol)...even luffy's mom and robin's dad and stuff are never mentioned. and none of this is ever really remarked upon - they DO have family, even if it isn't by blood

so the story sets this standard that the found family is The family and it doesn't matter where the characters came from. and this is the 'right' way of going about things, that the straw hats and other 'good guys' support

however, not everyone in the story agrees with this. which is huuuuge and so so juicy. like, ace gets to choose his brothers and his pirate dad/family, but the world govt will NOT forget or ignore his biological parentage, and they kill him for that. GODDDD it's so goooood

so you get the POV charaters (straw hats) who believe that where you came from biologically doesn't matter, and a lot of the antagonist characters who think it DOES matter.

so this creates the perfect atmosphere for us to never hear about the vinsmokes, bc we're seeing things via the straw hats, and sanji would never want or need to mention them, ever

the antagonists, though...different story. so that allows the perfect time for a reveal here!!!!

and HHHHH there are some EXCELLENT little tidbits earlier in the story - obviously sanji mentioning he's from north blue, and even his name w/the 'three'...it's stuff that's so small that it can easily be brushed aside if it doesn't amount to anything, but since it did we can look back and be like oh shiiiit

even him calling himself mr prince!!! like...he technically IS a prince by blood!!!

and like, ik a lot of people thought he'd be a celestial dragon, but I think it's better this way, bc if he DID have knowledge of the celestial dragons, even from when he was a kid, that would be useful in a way that would make it look bad if he witheld the knowledge previously, whereas the vinsmokes existing and sanji knowing about them doesn't really help anything...anyways, rambling.

so I love the last panel here, with sanji just looking completely shocked and horrified. because it isn't like he's really been hiding his past on purpose - he thought it didn't matter where he was originally from, because with the straw hats, it DIDN'T!!

but I feel like he had to have thought about it at least sometimes - what would happen if the vinsmokes came looking for him for whatever reason

but at the same time, we find out later that they basically kicked him out and told him to never come back, so he probably thought he'd never have to deal with them again (though I feel like he had to have wondered if he'd ever run into them in his travels...)

aaaanyways okay this is getting long and this is literally just the beginning of my long meta rants I'm sure. more to come soon!

* I've just started watching the series, I'm on like episode 4 lol so if anything is off character, I apologize.

P.s. I went to sleep thinking about this little moment so here it is:

Ryuk has discovered his love for these juicy red fruits in Light's universe. What were they called again? Right. Apples. He really wanted more apples and knew of only one way to get them.

Light.

"I'm home... hello?" Light called out. Guess no one was home. That's perfect. He'd have all the time and space to himself without interruptions to carry out writing names in the Death Note.

"Hey Light." Ryuk started, but was cut off by Light who was eager to go to his room.

"Not now Ryuk. I've got lots of names to take care of and little time to do this." Even though he was a Shinigami, Light still acted as though he needn't bother caring about what Ryuk needed.

A few moments pass, Light has already turned on his TV and started writing names down in order to bring justice to this world. And Ryuk has grown impatient.

"Light, I need you to get me more of those apples. They're so delicious. I can't wait any longer."

"Ryuk just be patient. I'm almost done here." Light said calmly. His back was turned to Ryuk and had zero intentions of stopping his work.

After a few minutes pass, Ryuk gets too restless and starts thinking of ways he can get Light to just bring him some damn apples. It's not that hard.

"Light will you just take a second to bring me some!" Ryuk said, grabbing Light's shoulder and shaking him.

Light refuses, and that broke it for Ryuk's patience.

"Fine. I'll just have to make you stop then." Ryuk lifted Light up from his chair and dragged him to the bed, pinning him down so that Light was trapped in his grip.

"Ryuk what the hehehehlllll!?" Light feels his stomach vibrated as Ryuk goes to measures he never thought he would have to.

"Ahahaha stopppp!! Ryuk this is rihihidiculous!" Light couldn't manage to get out his hold for some reason. "Let me gohoho, why do you neeheheed apples so bahahahad!?"

"Because!! I want them!!! And you'll get them for me one way or another!!" Ryuk demanded, holding his arms now with one hand and poking his ribs with the other.

"I've seen you humans doing this and know it can be a great strategy for one to give up without any real damage. Is it working Light? ~"

Light starts blushing, cackling as he realizes he's far more ticklish than he imagined. He hadn't been tickled since he was a kid, but man he really hasn't outgrown it.

"Ahahahahaha Rihihiyuk plehehehehease, Ihihi cahahahan't!!" Light tries all he can to get out of Ryuk's hold. He finally realizes all he has to do is get some stupid apples for this cursed Shinigami he's stuck with.

"Okayhehehehay fine!! I'll get your stuhuhupid apples!!"

With that, Ryuk let's him go, and Light falls to the ground, breathing heavily to catch his breath.

"Jeez you have some kind of crazy addiction or something. Ugh." Light collects himself and goes to the kitchen.

Where did mom leave the apples? They're not where they usually are. Could we be out? Ugh. I really don't want to waste time going to the store. Oh well. His loss. What a waste of energy that was.

"We don't have any Ryuk. You'll just have to wait until we get more." Light said, sitting back down and grabbing his pencil.

"WHAT!? What do you MEAN you're out?? Go get some more!!" Ryuk wasn't having it. He grabs Light again and pins him on his stomach, grabbing his waist, sides, ribs, whatever it took to finally get the words out of Light that he'll go get more.

"Nahahahaha dammit Ryuk!! I cahahahan't, I hahahahave to write these nahahahames now!!"

Light withstands Ryuk's torment until a it was too much. He finally agrees to get more apples for Ryuk. That damn Shinigami. What a distraction he could be.

And that's that! :D

Hopefully this brought a little smile to your face. I hope it wasn't too off-brand for the show.

I know Ryuk loves his apples and imagined it would be funny for him to tickle Light to pieces until he finally gets him apples 🤭

It’s hard to act natural when you’re being watched; you almost forget every aspect of your daily routine, putting excessive thought into typically mindless tasks like walking around your house or laying on your bed to the point of obviousness. 

“Light, wanna play video games?” Ryuk asked, standing before the boy.

Light fell back onto his bed, placing his hands behind his shoulders with a deep sigh. Closing his eyes, he prepared for the performance he’d have to put on. How could he ignore Ryuk without giving off reactions to the shinigami’s words, tilts of the head or instinctive hums of agreement that could incriminate himself in a matter of seconds.

“You listening? Hello?” 

Light only ignored him, grabbing a long beige coat from the closet before heading outside, Ryuk following close behind.

“Hey, Light, what’s with the brushing off? I’m starting to get annoyed.”

He popped his collar and rolled up his sleeves, checking meticulously for any bits of wire or chips of plastic that could be audio bugging him. 

“Light! Hey!” Ryuk wined.

“There might be secret hidden cameras around the house,” The brunette broke the silence, his voice in a slightly raspy lowered tone, almost a whisper, “Or microphones, probably both.” He explained, going on to detail his clever methods of finding out if someone had been in his room- or if someone had opened his door, at least.

“Let’s go on a camera hunt! You got a plan after that?” Ryuk asks.

“Simple, make it seem like I have no idea the cameras are even there, and that I’m just a normal teenager. I’ll probably need some excuse for why I have that paper and lead in my door, they’ll want to know why I don’t want anyone in my room, what I’m hiding, and if the footage reveals I’m hiding absolutely nothing, that’ll look even more suspicious. Every teenager has secrets.”

“So what’ll you do?”

“You’ll see.”

“This feels objectifying, Yagami.” 

You walk down the street leading to your boyfriend’s house, accompanied by the man himself as he explains his, quite frankly, pervy plan.

“I don’t know where all the cameras are, but there aren’t many like that in my room at all, we’ll be safe.” He lied, a practice that came so easily to him he no longer viewed it as morally wrong. It was just something he did, like going to school and eating dinner or doing homework, he also lied.

“Okay.” You agreed with a smile, prompting him to release his grasp on you and continue the walk home.

“I didn’t realize he went through such great lengths...might there be something in his room that he doesn’t want anyone to see?” Soichiro Yagami remarked, watching Light fiddle with the thin strip of paper in the doorway and the piece of lead in the hinges as you stood patiently behind him.

“Well, considering he’s 17, it isn’t all that unusual. I’ve done it myself, for no reason at all.” L responds, “I am a bit curious, though, as to what he’s hiding so admently.”

You enter Light’s bedroom with him, shutting the door behind you as you watch him toss his bag down besides his bed. 

“Y/N, are you scared of me?” He turns to face you.

“Hm? Why would I be.”

“L, the best detective in the world, thinks I’m Kira when I’m not.”

Oh, Light.

“He makes me out to be some kind of monster,” He continues, “I’m worried you’ll start to believe him.”

“I’m not scared.”

“Maybe you should be.”

“Huh?”

Before you could register his comment, Light lunges for you, tossing you onto his bed before tickling your stomach and sides.

Light makes a decision to ‘save’ Misa.

“You sure about this Light-o?” Ryuk’s gruff voice asked, but even he sounded a little tickled. Light just nodded, wincing as the lightning bolt outside perfectly blinded him.

“It’s the only way. Rem will have my head on a stick if I don’t save that dimwit.” If he had thought he hated L, Misa brought about a new type of feeling inside of him that he couldn’t yet name. It seemed as if they were both working together to bring about Kira’s downfall, which would be impressive considering Misa was ‘devoted’ to him. Idiot. His whole mission had almost been destroyed, and for what? A few measly hairs left atop a tape?

“Heh, yeah, Rem always did have a particularity for the crazy ones.” Ryuk sighed, and then sighed again. His sighs mixed in with the drizzle, making Light feel as if he was trapped inside the eye of the storm. He was watching everything play out through eyes that were not his own, and the mess was beautifully disturbing. “But this is going to be soooo boring for me. How long will I have to wait out in that forest again?”

“Until suspicion is lessened and I can get my notebook back.” Light replied firmly, having every step of the plan memorized and knowing there was no room for mistakes. “If Rem follows her instructions, hopefully my innocent self will still know what to look for. This shouldn’t take terribly long, I’m confident that whoever Rem chooses will be a half-wit. Well, they certainly won’t be as secretive and meticulous as I am at any rate. They’ll make bold moves; they’ll want the possibilities of money and power that this notebook could bring and their own greed will make them careless. L won’t believe that we will have found the original Kira, but as long as the Task Force does, that’s good enough for me. They want to believe I’m not Kira, you know.”

“And why wouldn’t L believe that you’ve found the original Kira?” Ryuk grumbled, the low timbre of his voice mixing in with the rumble of the thunder, almost making Light feel as if he was talking to the wind and the rain and all of the heavenly forces above.  

“Because, he thinks like me. We’re the same, really. That’s why I cannot trick him into seeing what’s not there, and that’s why I have to literally become an entirely different person. That way, he won’t understand me at all.”

It’s interesting that they use English in the classes and the notebook but the conversation at Interpol takes place in Japanese (despite the implied internationality and Ryuk’s aforementioned claim about English being most common) 

Huh I won’t lie I do think it’s confusing that the main characters are L and Light, which also starts with L

“I am justice” I mean if anything this show just proves that no one should be allowed to use the death penalty on apprehended suspects in criminal justice cases ever
