Dashgame: Never Have I Ever !
Rules: Your Muse and all the Muses they interact with are in a pub somewhere across Space, Dimension and Time. Answer the first 'Never Have I Ever' In Character. At the end of that let your Muse ask a new ‘Never Have I Ever’ question for the tagged people to answer themself. After those tagged people answered your prompt, they state their own 'Never Have I Ever' and tag you back along with other Muses. Rinse, lather, repeat.

"Mhm…" The wine in her glass moved gracefully as she moved the glass delicately. The redhead turned for a moment to look at her twin brother, she smiled, then simply closed her eyes, really enjoying the atmosphere that had been generated in that place "I sleep very few hours a day due to my genetics, and the few hours that I sleep, I really do well, it's a little difficult to wake me up. So luckily, I've never suffered from sleepwalking" Ryoko's voice was soft, calm, and well placed in her throat, which made her have a good presence.
"Neither do I" Kosei, her brother shrugged, disinterested, which made Ryoko unable to help but laugh.
"You have! Do I remind you of that time where you showed up at the infirmary and asked Nozomi that she had to give you a cure against the orange elephants that were singing in our garden?" There was widespread laughter.
Kosei simply responded by drinking from his glass "Thank you for reminding me…" There was a certain annoyed but loving tone to his sister in his voice.
"Let's see… then…" Ryoko thought, while a mischievous smile appeared on her face "Never have I ever… gone more than three days without bathing"

Such a great point! We view JK as protector of JM. Strong, stalwart. And he is. But it should be noted JM is JK’s protector.
JK ensures the chair is steady, the coats and shoes are picked up/moved, his arm is at his man’s back ascending stairs. His body is a buffer from human airport chaos. The BTS skit games are never too physically harmful. We are shown that protectiveness. The PHYSICAL.
But JM is the biggest provider of protection to JK’s soul. Are you okay, are you happy, that’s all that matters. Are you hot, hungry, HAPPY! I’m here, you are safe, hold my hand as we embark on our Connecticut journey. Run across stage so I can rub your head to soothe you. Plug into my calm while I place my hand on your leg to still your mind. Touch me anywhere at any time so your soul knows peace in a frenzied, too many people, situation. We are shown that protectiveness. The SOUL.
And we know they fit, there’s a beautiful symbiotic dance.
What we cannot forget is they also switch; and these are moments we are not always shown, but can piece together.
JK picking JM up out of his darkness, being there for him, supporting him when he felt alone pre-FACE era. Building him a stone tower. SOUL
JM doing a 30 metre dash to potentially land in a pool of vomit to ensure his man is okay on his stool when he was facing away from the stage. Never leaving his side in Chile. Making sure he stays hydrated in AYS. Don’t talk, I can get sick, you can’t. PHYSICAL
As we watch in awe, we see the reciprocity. There’s no defined roles. I will give you whatever you need at this moment is their motto, it appears.
I will provide the balm for your soul, I will provide the bandaid for your cut.
But most importantly, they seem to sense the impending mood shift or wound, and in the most reverent of actions, slide into protective mode, grab whichever warrior shield is required in that specific moment and utilize it with a strength and resolve that both of them can know, I.GOT.YOU
They are the epitome. Period.

Hi there!
I just wanted to let you know that I'd never heard of Saya no Uta until I saw you talking about it on my dash and I was like hey I'll look into that!! I had no idea what I was getting myself into, and it was definitely an experience. I've only played the route of choosing Saya and choosing to call Ryoko, so I still have to make the other choices to view all of the game's content, but I just wanted to come say thank you for giving me the second controversial piece of media I've been able to consume without my ocd throwing a bitchfit, because the whole story is fascinating from a psychological standpoint and that definitely drew me in.
I just wish the story was a little more 3D, I guess? Like the writing is overly descriptive of things it doesn't need to be descriptive of and underwhelming with the actual voiced dialogue. It's an extremely bizarre contrast. And from what little Japanese I've learn over the years out of SpInterest there are some translation points that aren't entirely accurate.
A big one is the fact that Saya speaks in third person which is a common cutesy mannerism for small children in Japanese media. In fact, she speaks super similarly to Maria Ushiromiya from Umineko ( complete with using 'uu!' for emphasis too ) which caused me to attach quickly to her for it. While it's true that this doesn't translate well into English, it does lose in translation just how young Saya really sounds while speaking. Because in Japanese she's saying things like 'Saya did this for Fuminori because Saya wants to be with Fuminori forever!' and it's getting translated as like 'I did this to make you happy. So you'll stay with me forever, right, Fuminori?' and those are two completely different tones. In fact, it's so overlooked from the English translation that this trope of hers isn't even mentioned on the The Song of Saya tvtropes page and that's wild to me.
Sorry, I didn't meant to turn this into a rant in your inbox asjklhd. Thank you for bringing this intriguing piece of media to my attention. 💖
Hiii, I'm so sorry for taking so long to reply to this ask but it was lovely getting it, so please don't apologize! We love getting long asks, and talking about our interests <3 And I'm really happy me basically screaming into the void about it, got you into it! That's great, that's exactly why I post about the things I like.
This was very interesting to read so thank you for sending it.
Side Thought: TV Troupes actually really really sucks for this kinda thing, it is widely innacurate with big media, and incredibly lacking for small media. So personally, I would not chuck TV Tropes lacking this as much to the (very bad, like super bad) official translation, as much as I would to the site just kinda sucking.
I'm sorry if I sound harsh, the website is fun, like any other wiki is, I just have personal beef against it, do not mind me, old man yells at cloud.
The first route I finished was also the one with Ryouko, and tbh, in my opinion that's the best one, but obviously seeing the other endings gives a lot of extra information, and character depth, so I hope you play through them and enjoy them too.
And yeah, I feel you, I wish it was more 3D and that I could have cared more about the characters, the writing definetly feels too much like purple prose, and way too descriptive about meaningless things sometimes, while also compeltley glazing over others.
Also big big same about the translation, I already posted my long rant about it, but it's really such a shame, because Nitro+ is actually so good at conveying character through dialogue, like actually reading some of the VNs in Japanese is a whole new experience on its own
And exactly as you said, it would have been far easier to understand Saya is a literally preubecent child if the translation had shown how childishly she actually speaks, or another big one, we would have gotten to see more of just how badly Fuminori wants to show off in front of Saya and Yoh, if the translation had actually shown him avoiding being fully honest with Saya.
Like there's so so many moments in Japanese of him just going, Well, about that, you know... to Saya when she's asking him about their plans together, and he's very reluctant to ask her for help, even when he really needs it, until she blatantly offers it, and he takes it.
In the Official English version he literally just goes "Well, the thing, Saya is that I failed to kill Koji, any ideas about that?"
So much character missed there, I feel like also missing the honorifics isn't helpful or good, like Yoh calling Oumi, Oumi-chan makes them feel way way closer, than just college friends who hang out between classes. And it gives you a better sense that they care for each other.
My hot take about translations is that they shouldn't just accomodate to what's most familiar to the target audience, in this case USA people, it should just make the media more accesible. It isn't a failure of art if it is a bit of a struggle to engage with it, it's good to make an effort to try to understand foreign art, even when the way the text is presented, isn't super familiar or relatable to you.
This is basically what everybody who isn't from an English speaking country already does lol

I've been watching Dungeon Meshi for the past couple weeks. I finished episode 16 (I've not read the manga because I want to just scoop it all up and buy what's out there when I finish my anime journey)
Some thoughts:
You all were right. It's very good
I want to eat that, I hate that I can't eat that.
Every character is good, I don't know who my favorite is. I'm trying not to have a bias towards Thistle but it's hard.
Speaking of, if your character named Thistle isn't a little weird, possessive and in desperate need of therapy, maybe consider it. Join the club of pretty boys named Thistle that need help (it's only two but it's weird that it's happened twice)
I hope Marcille and Falin have a big gay Italian wedding when this is over
I love Kabru.
The way it utilizes fantasy rpg tropes and game play elements to make actual world building details is so clever and I can tell the author really loves them.
There's a lot of blood in this. Normally this would bother me because I'm a big baby, but I've only had to look away once.
Thank you to all the gifs of Falin in the past months on my dash for spoiling me on what happens to her, it really made the cliffhanger on episode 11 really not make me lose it
I hope Ryoko Kui is having a good day today and eating well.

for the ask game 13 and 14!!
13. What's a character or ship you haven't written/drawn yet but would like to some day?
hmm... well with my present interests in mind, i suppose there's a few. i've technically drawn kabumisu but have not successfully written it yet, so that's one thing. i do have a fic though it's just barely started. and the unfinished chilbell fic... there are several individual characters i haven't drawn yet that i'd like to. mickbell, izutsumi, chilchuck's kids, falin, sissel...
realistically speaking though i guess one of these days i'll get over my weird irrational fears of being a Chilaios Traitor and write/draw labru. idk why chilbell didn't make me feel that way but labru does. labru is so very much my speed like... even if it's not my otp it calls to me... i have to engage with it eventually.
also i wanna draw more kabru in general. he's so babygirl.
14. Is there a character or ship you were so sure you would never write/draw but now you've changed your mind?
that one i'm not so sure about. there haven't been any characters or ships i looked at and was certain i'd never want to make art of, because i generally know myself better than to assume my opinions can't change. on a related note, though, i really don't think i expected to fall so in love with kabru, even if i never dismissed him outright. or mithrun, i guess, but also mithrun is so immediately captivating and comes in just late enough that by the time you get to him, you know what you're in for in terms of main characters and probably won't underestimate his presence in the story.
but the first time i saw kabru was in the anime, bc i hadn't started reading the manga yet. i had no context for who he was outside of having seen some fanart that implied he hated laios. i figured he'd probably be some sort of dashing rival, which was interesting for sure, but that was all it was at the time--"interesting". and then i read the manga.
i have to wonder if that's what you're supposed to think. ryoko kui is insanely good at subverting tropes, but to do so you often have to set the trope up first. kabru seems like he'll be a dashing rival who wants to be better than laios, but then you start getting into his personality and oh, he's a little fucked up. then you start getting into his motives and oh, he's... complicated? and then he reveals his backstory and oh! he's traumatized! and then the story keeps going and you realize he is a deeply flawed but deeply caring person who is trying to do what he believes is best no matter what. and he's as well-rounded as everyone else ryoko kui writes. and he's aware of his own limitations as well as his strengths and will use both however he can to do what's right. and at that point how could i not love him

This just hit me while rewatching episode 5 about how Neku and Joshua had to open a wall to get to Udagawa but somehow all these players were already there.
Thanks to @ gramoturtle too for pushing this thought process!
Major Spoilers for the game are under the cut!!
The game makes it clear that where you wake up isn't consistent. The anime kinda makes it clear but not quite as much since they usually wake up in Scramble Crossing or by Hachiko.
However I always assumed all the players would wake up in the same spot. That... doesn't seem to be the case, even in the game.
Firstly I think Minamimoto, for obvious game spoilery reasons pf wanting to be Composer, is singling out Neku and Joshua. Particularly Joshua. But at the same time, needs to get rid of the other players.
If the Game Master has control over where players wake up, I can imagine that's exactly why Neku and Joshua woke up far from Udagawa with a level three wall separating their path to that part of the city while also putting every other player within that area prone to taboo noise attacks.
Its basically an execution of players. He doesn't care about them, just his own goal of getting to Joshua.
The game also implies the reapers have some semblance of control over where the players wake up so this doesn't seem like an 'anime only' thing.
Two points I can think off the bat. Week 1, Day 3 I think, Neku and Shiki wake up in the dark concert hall. There are still players besides them, notably Beat and Rhyme but they don't seem to have woken up in the same spot, implying not all players awake in the same parts of the city.
Second, in week 3 with Beat, when they wake up in the Underpass by Miyashita park, this was an intentional awakening point by Kariya to intentionally stir up memories of Beat's death. Its where Beat is forced to remember his motives and how he failed to protect Rhyme. As for the reason other than plot? I'm not sure why Kariya wanted to do that. He doesn't seem clear in his motives either though and that's another can of worms.
TL;DR. My guess is that Minamimoto intentionally isolated Joshua and Neku from the other players so that he can erase all of them but those two.

“meraki; pt.1″
Tumblr media
ibusaki shun x reader; food wars you are here | pt.2 | pt.3 ? contain: slight angst, swear words word count: 855 :0 notes: I need more ibusaki shun fanfics so uh yeah :) I hope you enjoy part one!! inspired by melanie martinez’s song “Playdate” please listen to her <3
You waved at your dormmates, bidding them good night. "But you won't be able to listen to the Meraki Radio," Isshiki said to you with his head tilted. "It's my bedtime, I plan to wake up early tomorrow. Goodnight everyone.", you rushed to your bedroom once out of everyone's view. Entering and locking your bedroom door, you panted. You clenched your fists and remembered the scene that caused you to run to your room.
Ryoko and Shun were talking while you secretly stared at them. His hand moving towards her face and tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear. Her beautiful giggles echoed in the dining area as she blushed. You fully supported them, even if you liked Shun. He then catches your gaze and nods at you. You gave him a thumbs up to signify that he should continue doing what he was doing. He turned back to Ryoko as you sighed to yourself and went to Megumi to help her from Souma.
You sighed as you heard your alarm ring. Pressing snooze, you went to your chair and sat down. You eyed the headphones in front of you and hesitated to go on air. "They're expecting me— no, they're expecting Meraki." you thought to yourself and put on the headphones. Adjusting your mic, you then went on air.
"Hello again everyone, it's Meraki!" you exclaimed and saw the replies everyone posted on your site. "I decided that I'm going to sing for you guys a new song that I recently produced," you told your audience. "I hope you enjoy!" you say and played the track that you made.
"You call me on the telephone, you feel so far away. You tell me to come over, there's some games you wanna play. I'm walking to your house, nobody's home. Just me and you and you and me alone"
Your dorm mates were cheering downstairs as you continued to sing.
"We're just playing hide and seek. It's getting hard to breathe under the sheets with you. I don't want to play no games. I'm tired of always chasing, chasing after you"
Closing your eyes, you let the tears flow, not resisting it at all. "Is Meraki crying..?" Yuki said in surprise as her eyes read the comments while listening.
The scene between Ryoko and Shun replayed in your head as if it was a broken record. Clenching your fists, you continued to sing.
"I don't give a fuck about you anyways. Whoever said I gave a shit 'bout you? You never share your toys or communicate. I guess I'm just a play date to you"
You opened your eyes and saw the comments, seeing everyone was worried about you. Smiling after reading them, you continued singing.
"Wake up in your bedroom and there's nothing left to say. When I try to talk you're always playing board games. I wish I had monopoly over your mind. I wish I didn't care all the time."
It was true, you wished you didn't care about Shun all the time. You have fallen for him since middle school, he plagued your mind.
"I don't give a fuck about you anyways. Whoever said I gave a shit 'bout you? You never share your toys or communicate. I guess I'm just a play date to you"
Shun decided to leave the rest, saying he was sleepy. Ryoko smiled at him and bid him goodnight and sweet dreams. Hiding his blush, he nodded at her and left Marui's room.
"Ring around the rosy. I never know, I never know what you need. Ring around the rosy, I wanna give you, wanna give you. What you need"
He passed your room and heard the same song on Meraki Radio. He didn't think it was weird at first until he heard the singing from your room. Peeking in quietly, he saw you with a mic and headphones on.
"I don't give a fuck about you anyways. Whoever said I gave a shit 'bout you? You never share your toys or communicate. I guess I'm just a play date to you"
Lies, lies, they're all lies. You loved him. You did give a fuck about him. Even if it's just a playdate, you wanted to spend more time with him. You wanted him, but he was too far away. Relaxing your shoulders and wiping away your tears, you sang the last lines.
"You know I give a fuck about you every day. Guess it's time that I tell you the truth. If I share my toys, will you let me stay? Don't wanna leave this play date with you"
You sighed finishing the song and stopped the track from replaying.
"Thank you, everyone, for listening to Meraki Radio today. I hope you understand that I will be ending the Radio earlier than expected due to personal reasons. Thank you and goodnight."
You went off air and heard the door shut. Shun immediately dashed to his room. He was such an idiot, how could he have not noticed? He is your best friend. The mic on your shelf, you staying up all night to make "recipes" at your room, and of course— you excusing yourself every time Meraki Radio was on. Other than you being Meraki of the Meraki Radio; something was wrong.

Since that whole post about Bad Girls and Compassionate Male Heroes kinda blew up and the discussion just... isn’t stopping, I’ve been thinking of this trope a lot and uh, I guess I’m gonna list a bunch of examples of it since I’ve kinda been doing it already and it’d be nice to have them all in one spot I guess. Gonna put a cut because even though I don’t want to make a huge list, I still think this is gonna be long.
4 Tried and True Bad Girls -  the following fit the archetype as I roughly defined it here pretty much to the letter.  Of course, the thing about archetypes and tropes is that you don’t have to hit every single detail to still “count,” but it’s good to have a baseline.
Jessie
Tumblr media
A member of an international crime syndicate, a notorious thief, and a recurring antagonist for the hero, Jessie from Pokemon is an excellent example of the Bad Girl trope because if you remove female pronouns while describing her, she basically fits the stock Bad Boy traits to a T.  Aggressive and arrogant?  Check.  Prone to violent outbursts?  Check.  Intensely jealous of people who seem to have it easier?  Check.  Hidden tender side and tragic backstory?  Check.  Also she’s one half of the greatest romantic couple ever portrayed in fiction - and her counterpart is a compassionate, sweet-natured guy to boot!
Ryoko
Tumblr media
I’m not going to fill this up with anime examples (though I probably could - Bad Girls are much more common in Japanese media), but I couldn’t resist including Ryoko, because she’s not just a Bad Girl - she’s a PIRATE, which, if my grandma’s collection of romance novels was anything to go by, is an incredibly popular occupation for a Bad Boy to have!  More than that, she’s a space pirate, the plunderer of countless worlds, wanted by the space police force and considered a villain of legendary power.  More than that, she can wield store brand lightsabers, shoot lasers out of her hands, and even spent a good chunk of time as a mummy!  Ryoko’s personality is pure Dashing Rogue, the Bad Boy Girl who’s definitely a scoundrel but, maybe, just maybe, the kind of scoundrel who’s got a good heart.  She definitely pines for love and an amount of stability, though she doesn’t want to stop traveling the stars as a boozing adventurer who gets into the most ludicrous scrapes.  Everything about Ryoko plays up the ideas of a Bad Boy romance with the flair for drama and fantasy that a space opera can provide, except the Bad Boy is a girl and the sweet ingenue heroine is a boy.
Ryoko is who you wish Jack Sparrow would be.
Faith
Tumblr media
Faith was introduced as a second Slayer in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which was the result of magical shenanigans that suddenly rendered the whole “there can only be one slayer at a time” rule kinda moot.  Ok that’s an extremely abbreviated summary and it’s really more complicated than that but I can already feel the non-Buffy fans falling asleep so let’s stay focused.
Since Buffy is, y’know, the main character, Faith was brought on to be her foil - an example of what Buffy wasn’t, but possibly could become.  And since BtVS was a horror dramedy, Faith wasn’t a GOOD alternative - she was, explicitly, Buffy’s dark counterpart, from her brunette hair to her heavy and darker makeup to her rad leather jacket and, as the show frequently said, “slutty” wardrobe.  Faith was more violent, more sexual, and more apathetic to others than Buffy was, and holy fuck did the show just hate her for it.  Almost every character in it treated her like shit, with her sexuality in particular being a sticking point for many of them.
Faith is particularly interesting because she differs from Buffy (and the female cast at large) in almost the exact same ways that the show’s main Bad Boys, Angel and Spike, differed from its male characters - more violent, more sexual, darker clothes, etc.  But while Angel and Spike get a great deal of sympathy from the narrative, Faith... didn’t.  I mean they kinda sorta gave her some eventually, but most of it played out in the spinoff Angel, and the other characters continued to hold a grudge against her.  Faith isn’t just an good example of the Bad Girl trope - she’s an example of how the reaction to Bad Girls differs from the reaction to Bad Boys, despite them being almost exactly the same.
Vriska Serket
Tumblr media
OH FUCK IT’S HOMESTUCK
Ok, everyone still hates Homestuck, so I won’t belabor this point, but Vriska Serket, who is infamously the most divisive character in the entire story, is absolutely a bad girl.  Arrogant, ruthless, abrasive, with a tragic backstory, a desire for both compassion and redemption, and a truly ambitious schemer, she ticks so many boxes and OH SHIT SHE’S ALSO A PIRATE.  Like Faith, Vriska was in a story that had a lot of examples of Bad Boys too, and while the fandom fucking HATES Vriska, her Bad Boy counterparts are nowhere near as divisive, with one of them being extremely popular despite being a clown who murders people.  The other one explicitly wants to commit genocide, literally saying almost exactly that, and is also far more well liked.  WHY IS THIS?
But enough of the homestucks!  Let’s move onto some...
Borderline Bad Girls - these ladies don’t fit the trope quite as neatly, but I still think they capture the jist, or at least used it as a base before experimenting in different directions.  They are, at the very least, closer to the Bad Girl archetype than its sibling tropes, the Badass Heroine and the Femme Fatale.
Jessica Jones
Tumblr media
I’m just gonna talk about the Netflix incarnation of this character, as I have not read the comic books featuring Jessica Jones and thus cannot comment on them.
The only real strike against Jessica Jones is that she isn’t a supporting cast member, like pretty much all other Bad Girls are.  She’s the protagonist, the titular main character.  That’s a unique honor for a Bad Girl to have!  Otherwise, she fits - hard drinking, abrasive, rude, surly as hell, but with a tender heart, a tragic backstory, and a desire for redemption.  Hell she’s even wearing the Bad Girl leather jacket.
Morrigan
Tumblr media
Ok, we’re straying a bit far here, but I’m going to try to make a case here.  Morrigan’s rudeness and abrasiveness isn’t quite as bombastic as the standard take on the Bad Girl trope - she actually phrases things very politely and speaks very softly most of the time, and is generally cordial to people when they are cordial to her.  It’s the content of what she says, rather than the way she says it, that sets most people off.  There’s also an odd naivety to Morrigan’s interactions that isn’t immediately noticeable because her vocabulary is so, well, verbose.  She doesn’t make the “ill tempered thug” impression most Bad Girls make when they’re first introduced - she instead comes off as very sophisticated yet oddly ignorant of the civilized world, which is a very different starting point for a Bad Girl.
BUT!  Morrigan’s character arc follows the rough path of a Bad Girl.  She verbalizes a lot of callous and cruel ideas about the world when you first meet her, giving the impression that she is some sort of sadistic monster.  It’s done in a very different way than the standard Bad Boy/Bad Girl, but it has the same effect - you are led to think this girl is a Bad Person very early on.  And yes, to some extent she is - but, just like any other Bad Boy/Bad Girl, her actions later on show that’s not all there is to her, that, even if she isn’t aware of it, there is a loving core to Morrigan - she wants to be good.
Like most Bad Boys/Bad Girls, it’s eventually revealed that Morrigan’s childhood situation was NOT GREAT, and that she has been the victim of abuse and some very bad parenting.  A great deal of her wickedness isn’t inherent to her, but something she was indoctrinated into - and, in TRUE Bad Boy/Bad Girl fashion, love, especially romantic love, makes her doubt her view of the world.  It begins to break apart, and she gradually learns, to her confusion, horror, and eventually, hope, that there is another way to live - a better, kinder way.
One might argue that Morrigan doesn’t fit the Bad Girl trope, but another villainous female archetype instead.  For instance, one might say she is instead a Femme Fatale, since she dresses all sexy like and whatnot - but Morrigan doesn’t really seduce people all that often in the narrative.  Early on in the first Dragon Age game you have an option to ask her to seduce a guard, and Morrigan not only reacts in disgust, but instead horrifies the guard into letting you by instead (because Morrigan is great).  The only time she does seduce someone is specifically to keep the main characters from an otherwise inevitable death via a dark magic ritual - and yes it does feel ridiculous to type that out, but 1. it makes more sense in context and 2. I think the ridiculous circumstances of this seduction kinda illustrates why it’s not really a core character trait of hers, which is why she doesn’t fit the Femme Fatale mold.  Likewise, while one could say she fits the idea of a Vain Sorceress... well, other than being pretty and using magic, Morrigian really doesn’t.  She’s not motivated by preserving her youth, and doesn’t really seem to care much for traditional beauty standards at all if her conversation with Leliana is anything to go by (though she does meet them anyway because, well, Video Games).  Morrigan doesn’t really fit any villainous female archetype perfectly, but if we accept her as a Bad Girl, she makes for a particularly interesting example.
Hexadecimal
Tumblr media
Straying further!  Like Morrigan, one might be tempted to put Hexadecimal in the Vain Sorceress or Femme Fatale archetypes instead, but again, like Morrigan, she really doesn’t act like either of those two despite being a sexy lady who uses magic for villainous ends.  Instead she’s defined by being the sort of superhero/action adventure cartoon variety of “crazy,” which isn’t based on any real mental illness, but rather an excuse for her to cause a lot of mayhem for no real reason.  Unlike most “crazy” villains, though, Hex’s insanity is treated with sympathy by the narrative and the main hero - while most people would be willing to write Hex off as someone they’d rather live without, Bob, the hero, continually tries to reason with her and help her overcome her madness.
Most people wrote her off as a lost cause, but the hero showed her compassion.  There’s smackings of a Bad Boy in that.
As the show goes on, Bob’s compassion for Hexadecimal is repaid with her own affection, and she slowly turns from villain to hero out of a desire to not only keep Bob safe, but make sure he’s happy - and she comes to realize he can’t be happy without the people he loves.  Hex becomes a truly tragic and noble character towards the end of the show, as she knows Bob will never reciprocate her romantic affections but still remains on his side anyway, even saving the lives of people who argued against saving her.  A villain who seems like a frothing mad dog, only to be turned into a hero after the compassion of a hero makes them realize the value of human life?  That’s is SUCH a Bad Boy arc.  Hexadecimal may not fit some of the aesthetic trappings of the Bad Girl archetype, but her arc fits it perfectly.
Harley Quinn
Tumblr media
When she was first introduced, Harley Quinn wasn’t a Bad Girl so much as she was, like, the perky love interest of a bad guy.  She wasn’t given enough focus and agency in the narrative to really fit the Bad Girl archetype.  However, in recent years she’s been retooled a bit to work independently of the character she was designed to orbit, and as a result she may be our second example of a Bad Girl protagonist.  She’s a supervillain, or at least was, and was in league with one of the worst at that.  She’s loud and aggressive in combat, has a big bombastic personality, and revels in living an anarchic lifestyle.  But, as her solo series shows, she does have a good heart deep down, adopting stray dogs and helping out fellow weirdos who have been left behind by a world that doesn’t give a damn about them.  Harley Quinn is and has always been defined by her desire to be loved, which is very much a Bad Girl sort of trait - especially since that desire often leads to her acting out, just as most Bad Boys and Bad Girls act out because, ultimately, they haven’t been shown enough love.
Plus a lot of her modern designs add a leather jacket, and it just seems that once a girl wears a leather jacket she has at least a 70% chance of being a Bad Girl.
Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee
Tumblr media
I had no idea where to put these ladies and whether or not they fit this archetype, but I felt they had to be noted because they’re very well known examples of complicated female villains who don’t fit the Femme Fatale archetype at all, which in turn makes them feel like pretty good candidates for Bad Girl-dom.  Azula probably fits the archetype the closest, though you don’t see her desire for compassion until VERY late in the series (where she is, sadly, too far gone to get her redemption).  Mai comes in close second, though her sullen demeanor oddly fits the Badass Heroine a bit better.  And then Ty Lee... Ty Lee... I mean she’s like an even sweeter and kinder Harley Quinn, she hardly even counts as a villain except she works with the bad guys... I don’t know what we do with Ty Lee, guys.  Ty Lee’s just her own thing.

May I request something? I wondered about that matter since Chapter 9 of "On Casual Commitments", since it was brought up there. I was too shy to ask earlier, but I'd really like to know what happened between Yuki and Marui when they met at Polar Star to help Fumio-san moving out. So yes, may I ask for that? I am still enchanted by the two other One Shots you wrote about them and thought I could ask. Have a good day or night :)
Sure! I hope you enjoy it!
Yoshino Yuki woke up in her luxury suite at the Totsuki Imperial hotel. Ah, let’s just take a moment to let that sink in. After her first class, nonstop flight from New York City to Tokyo, Yoshino Yuki—the lifetime lover of all things decadent—had checked in to a room on the top floor of of a five star hotel and did not have to worry about the price!
Sometimes when she missed home or got tired of filming or woke Ryoko at 4 o’clock in the morning because she forgot about the time difference, Yuki wondered whether the cosmopolitan lifestyle she had chased so tirelessly was really worth it. But now with the silk sheets beneath her and the city streets below her and a remote control that could turn day to night in her room, she was sure that she had chosen correctly.
With a click of a button the sunlight was absorbed by dark curtains. That was nice. She stretched and rolled over in bed, hoping to fight the jetlag with a couple more hours of sleep. Her plans were promptly foiled all of fifteen minutes later when her cell phone started ringing.
Yuki groaned, rubbing at her eyes. If it was her producer again she swore she was going throttle him. What part of ‘vacation day’ was so difficult to grasp? “You’ve reached Yoshino Yuki,” she said, trying her best to put on her TV voice despite the ungodly hour.
“Good morning, Yoshino-san. I’m a few minutes away from your hotel, so you can come downstairs.”
Fuuuuuuck. She had completely forgotten that Marui offered to drive her up to campus. She’d gotten so accustomed to taking taxis everywhere. “Ah…um…about that…” She hopped out of bed and started rifling through her luggage for something to wear while simultaneously unpinning her hair rollers. “I’m not quite ready yet, but I should be down in ten minutes.”
“Yoshino-san,” he said, his voice laced with disbelief.
“Okay, twenty minutes,” she conceded, sighing. “A half hour tops. I just overslept so—”
“Figured as much,” he said, and she could almost see him smugly adjusting his spectacles. “Truthfully, I haven’t left my house yet. Do you think you’ll be ready in an hour?”
“Damn it, you almost gave me a heart attack!” Yuki huffed, hands resting on her hips. “That’s so mean of you, Marui.”
“Sorry, I couldn’t resist. You’re always running late, ever since we were in school.”
“Whatever.” Yuki rolled her eyes, annoyed that she had fallen for it. “An hour should be fine, though.”
“I’ll see you then.”
When she finally made it downstairs, wearing oversized sunglasses and a navy jumpsuit from Neiman Marcus, Marui Zenji was waiting for her. She smiled a bit when she saw him in his tweed suit jacket and slacks; he looked more and more like a professor every time they met.
“What are you doing dressing like that to pack boxes?” she asked.
“You’re one to talk,” he said, gesturing at her designer diggs.
“I have an interview later with this really cool magazine,” she explained, blushing a bit. She remembered the first time he’d looked at her like that, when she had gone to a school dance in that silly cherry dress.
“And I have a review session to run,” he said.
Yuki nodded. They were both still busy—the same kind of busy that had broken them up close to a decade ago. “That’s exciting!” She beamed at him. “You’re almost like someone reliable now.”
“What do you mean ‘almost?’”
The drive went by relatively quickly; they chatted amicably about the ambitions that had come between them and the precious godchild they shared.
By the time they made it to the Polar Star, they had fallen into a synthetic version of their old rhythm―her giving him flack and him flipping it back on her. But a sense of hesitation coated their interactions; after all, it would be too easy to fall back into old habits. And that would hardly be appropriate given that he was engaged to be married.
“There you kids are,” Fumio-san said as she ambled out into the hallway.  “You’re late. I’m already halfway done.” And, of course, by halfway done she meant that all the boxes were open, but had nothing in them.
“Fumio-san!” Yuki dashed to hug the old dorm mother, who she hadn’t seen in two years.
“There’s the Hollywood star,” she said. “You know the only reason I kept paying that damn cable bill was to watch your shows.”
“C’mon, that’s not true,” Yuki replied. “You’ve been watching those soap operas since we were in middle school. Right Marui?”
“I can’t remember. Don’t bring me into this.”
Yuki crossed her arms. “That’s so half-assed of you. A man with glasses should be more assertive.”
“Why do you insist on attributing so many characteristics to the fact that I wear glasses?”
“Because it’s true,” she quipped.
He sighed. “On what basis does…” And then they were back to their banter.
Fumio watched them go at it for a few minutes, smiling as she leaned heavily against her cane. “Hey now,” she said finally. “Did you come here to stand around and bicker all day? Start packing up the bookshelf while I make lunch.”
The bookshelf was a wealth of knowledge. Over the years, generations of Polar Star residents had left behind textbooks, recipe books, travel guides, and a host of manga volumes for new cohorts of students. All of these, Fumio-san would be leaving at the dorm. The only thing she would take with her was the yearbooks—one for every class she had nurtured until graduation.
Because they were only human, they stopped to peer into the lives of the famous generations—the Polar Star’s golden age, Shinomiya Koujirou’s class, and naturally their own jewel generation.
“Look at the Elite Ten page,” Marui said after Yuki flipped to it. They were all lined up in front of Totsuki’s Parliament for a group photo, smiling in front of the fresh blossoms.
“They’re all paired up now,” Yuki noted. “Megumi and Takumi, Alice and Kurokiba, Hayama and Hishoko-chi, Yukihira and Erina-chi. It’s so cute.”
“And a little frightening,” Marui replied. “I can only imagine the next generation.”
“Well, that’s your problem now, prof.” Yuki laughed a little bit of the thought of him having to contend with their crazy classmates’ offspring. Then she turned the page to reveal the students’ individual photos. Yuki groaned when she saw her picture. “I was so plain back then.”
“That’s not true,” Marui told her.
“How?” Yuki pointed to yearbook again. “Look at me and then look at Erina-chi, Alice-chi, Nikumi. Compared to them I practically faded into the background.”
“You were always vibrant,” he said. “Even when the people you mentioned were present, it was you that lit up the room every time.”
Yuki smiled a little bit. “Well, you were biased back then.”
Later, she gestured to another page as he was about to turn it, their fingers brushing in the process. “It’s the pregame before senior formal. How did that make it into the yearbook?”
“The better question is how did the pregame make it into my room?” he asked, scowling at the memory.
“I think we convinced you somehow,” Yuki said, grinning as the memories came back to her. “Besides, I helped you clean that time.”
“Literally only because your room was overrun with baby animals and you wanted to crash in there.”
“Details, details.” She waved the comment off. “Anyway, I don’t remember you being upset about my presence there back then.” Now that she thought about it, that night had been special in more ways than one. She turned the page again, trying to change the subject in her own mind. “Remember senior ditch day?”
“I remember carrying you back from the beach because you fell asleep,” he noted.
“Well I remember running up and down the beach to look for your stupid glasses.” In the end, Yuki had narrowly saved them from being pounded with a baseball bat—that watermelon game had always done more harm than good.
They remembered, and they remembered. And the more they remembered the more they forgot how they had ever been able to manage without one another.
They finally reached the photos from the alumni banquet—the event that had changed everything for the 92nd generation. “It’s almost a little bittersweet when you think about it,” she said as she read through the initial career choices of all their classmates. “Hayama and Hishoko-chi were over by the end of the night.”
“Ibusaki and Sakaki found an apartment together by the next day,” he added.
“And Megumi turned down her best offers to follow Yukihira to New York,” Yuki recalled. “Not that she ever told him that.”
“In the end, that’s probably what doomed their relationship,” Marui said somberly. “A sacrifice like that…” He shrugged. It was unimaginable for most people.
“I don’t know,” Yuki said. “From where I’m standing, I still wouldn’t call it a mistake to value a relationship that much. I mean, if I could do everything over…” She trailed off. No. She couldn’t take it there.
Marui suddenly spoke up. “I’d follow you,” he said, pushing his glasses further up his nose. “If I could do it again, I would follow you to Munich, to Prague, wherever.”
“I would stay.”
They let the truth hang between them for a moment, and then neither mentioned it again for the remainder of the visit.
After they finished helping Fumio-san move, Marui dropped her back at her hotel, and they hugged goodbye for a second too long.
“Get home safe, Yoshino-san,” he said. “Text me when your plane lands.”
“Yeah. I will.”
That night the silk beneath her felt distant, cold, and she longed for the cotton quilts of days past.
