Classified: Punk Rock Little
Chapter 3
Read chapter 2 here
Name: Miles Miller
DOB: 06/01/2002
CIN: E25S6832
Citizen Lifestyle Assignment Sorting and Sectioning
(CLASS)
Result: Little
Miles tightened his grip around the letter to the point of almost tearing the parchment. Tears welled in his eyes as all the muscles in his body locked up with tension.
“Is that your CLASS result?” Lindsay looked up from her book across the room, “What does it say?”
“It– it… uhhh”
“What?”
Miles, tears welling in his eyes, had no idea what to say or what to do. He did the only reasonable thing he could think to do. He crumpled up the letter into his fist and bolted into his room, slamming and locking his door behind him.
“Miles,” Lindsay knocked on the door, “Come on out. It's just Dylan and I out here anyway.”
“LEAVE ME ALONE!” Miles shouted from the other side of the door.
“Oh stop being a baby,” Lindsay retorted.
“SHUT UP,” the distress was obvious in his voice.
“Did he…” Dylan stuttered with uncertainty from the hallway, “Is he… you know… a Little?”
“He’s certainly acting like one,” Lindsay rolled her eyes before fishing her phone out of her pocket.
“What are you doing?” Dylan asked.
“Calling Ryley,” Lindsay explained, “Miles is like a brother to me –albeit an annoying brother– but still. I’m not a Caregiver, but maybe Ryley can help him more than we can.”
“Lindsay?” Riley answered, “What’s up? Practice isn’t for a couple hours.”
“I know. Listen Ryley, Miles got his CLASS results back today and…”
“What’d he get?”
“We don’t know,” Lindsay sighed, “Well not officially anyway. He took the results and locked himself in his room, so I think it’s relatively safe to assume…”
“I’ll be right over. I have an Emergency Littles Kit I can bring too.”
“That’d be great. Thanks Ryley.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~PRL~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Miles paced back and forth in his room. He looked at Melvin, his watermelon-penguin stuffie with a vengeance. Melvin, who had been his closest friend for who knows how long, now felt like he had somehow betrayed him.
Miles looked at the haphazard piles of dirty clothes on the floor. His room was a mess. He was a mess.
His clothes! Miles started hyperventilating. The vast majority of his t-shirts had all manners of expletives and inappropriate slogans on them. No way he was getting to keep his old wardrobe.
Miles’s chest started thumping as he continued to hyperventilate. Clothes were the least of his worries. How could he be a rockstar if he was a Little? Hell, that might not even be his biggest concern. What if… what if his friends didn’t want to hangout with him anymore because he wasn’t punk rock enough for them? What if they sent him to an assignment center!?
“Miles?” He heard Ryley’s voice from the other side of the door, “Can you open up the door for me please?”
“N-no,” Miles managed to squeak out.
“Miles,” Ryley sighed like she was about to be forced to do something she didn’t want to do, “I’m going to count to three, alright? When I get to three, that door better be open. Then we're going to sort this all out together, okay?”
Miles didn’t have it in him to respond. Everything was too much. Tears finally fell from his eyes and began rolling down his cheeks.
“One,” Riley started counting.
Miles stood paralyzed with anxiety and fear. Sure, he was more than a little distraught about being a Little, but something about Ryley’s tone scared him in a newly compelling way.
“Two.”
Miles still couldn’t move. To his horror, his face wasn’t the only thing that was wet; he began to feel a wetness slowly spread over his crotch and began to soak his black jeans. Miles felt snot helplessly run down his nose as he ugly cried. MY LIFE IS OVER, he thought.
“Three~,” Ryley drew the last syllable out to give Miles a chance, and Miles wasn’t going to waste that chance.
For whatever reason, the prospect of Ryley’s count ending terrified him into action, and he dashed towards his door, momentarily forgetting about his messy appearance.
He unlocked the door and opened it to see Ryley’s face. She looked genuinely concerned for his well being, and he felt a pang of guilt for worrying her.
“Oh Miles,” Ryley wrapped her arms around him, “Shhh it’s okay. I’m here now. Shhh”
Ryley lovingly stroked his hair as Lindsay wordlessly watched, and Dylan left to give the pair their privacy.
Miles felt his shame and anxiety melt away in Ryley’s embrace. His full on face-flood was now reduced to a string of sniffles.
“Sweetie,” Ryley eyed Miles’s wet pants but neglected to say anything, “How about we run a bath for you and get you all cleaned up? Does that sound good?”
Miles nodded without saying a word. It was all he could manage without breaking down into tears again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~PRL~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So you’re a Little,” Ryley used a cup to rinse shampoo out of Miles’s hair, “That’s a big adjustment, but I just wanted to let you know that you don’t have to do it alone. I’ll help you along the way as best I can, I promise.”
“T-thanks,” Miles nodded from within the bathtub. It was strange; he felt the cleanest he had felt in a long time with Ryley washing him, and parts of it were even enjoyable. But he still felt uncertain and scared. In this small moment, he was thankful for Ryley’s presence.
“All clean!” Ryley borderline sang.
“T-thanks.”
“You’re welcome, sweetie. You behaved so well for me, and I’m so proud! But there’s one more teensy thing I need your help with, okay?”
Miles didn’t know how to feel about the petnames and gentle praise he was receiving, but he eventually decided that –for at least tonight– he needed Ryley’s comforting presence and decided to let it slide.
“O-okay.”
“Great,” Ryley produced a small kit from the floor next to the bath and opened it to reveal four differently colored candies that were each shaped like lifesavers, “I need you to try each of these candies for me. One should taste the best, and I need to know which one that is. You can spit out the rest.”
Miles reached out into the kit and sampled the candies one by one. The first three ranged from horrible tasting to mediocre, but he didn’t quite enjoy any of them. Then he tried the purple. The purple tasted delicious. Before Miles knew it, he swallowed it.
“The purple one tasted the best,” Miles told Ryley.
“Ok, Thank you little one.”
Miles squinted in annoyance. Ryley really was pushing it with the pet names, but he didn’t want to push her away, so he didn’t say anything.
“R-ryley,” Miles stared at the porcelain floor of the bathtub, “Can I have another purple candy please?”
“Sorry cutie,” Ryley stroked a stray strand of hair behind Miles’s ear, “but I dont have another one. I also don’t think that’s a good idea anyway; those candies were to help us figure some stuff out about your new classification.”
“Oh… so what does liking purple mean?”
“Well for one, that means you're an L-2 Little. And it will help us know what to look for when we go to the Little Supply store tomorrow.”
“Oh…” Miles didn’t quite remember the specifics of what that meant, but he didn’t want to sound stupid in front of Ryley, so he kept his mouth shut. It wasn’t his fault he dropped out of college before they had a refresher on all the intricacies of the CLASS system.
“C’mon,” Ryley began to dry him off with a towel. Under other circumstances, Miles would’ve probably found this situation hot, but there were just too many new emotions to deal with.
“So I was thinking,” Ryley bent down to dry off his legs, “I could get you dressed and then you might want to come over to my place and have a sleepover?”
“A sleepover?”
“Yeah it’ll be fun!” Ryley beamed, “and that way I can keep an eye on you. Just in case.”
“Yeah okay.”
“Great!” Ryley dropped the towel and warped him in a tight hug. Miles hugged back with a tension that suggested that he never wanted to let her go.
“Okay, now I need to get you dressed, and I need you to be mature for me and not freak out, okay?”
Before Miles had the chance to respond, Ryley reached for the box that the candies came from and pulled out a fluffy white square. A diaper, Miles realized in horror.
“Ryley, no! You are NOT putting that on me!”
“Miles. Behave,” there was a certain sternness in Ryley’s voice that Miles wasn’t accustomed to.
“NO!” Miles shouted, “Ryley I can’t think of anything less punk rock than that!”
“Miles,” Ryley sighed, “Remember how you had an accident before bath time?”
“Wha– I didn’t–”
“Don’t.” Ryley’s eyebrows furrowed, “lie to me, Miles.”
“F-fine. But it was a one time thing, okay?”
“I’m sure it was, but it would make me feel better if you let me put this on you. After all, I can definitely think of one thing less punk rock than wearing a diaper: wetting your pants in front of everyone. Again.”
Miles clenched his fists and puffed out his cheeks in frustration. Ryley hated to admit it, but she thought he looked adorable.
“Fine.” Miles begrudgingly accepted, unable to find a flaw in her logic.
Ryley laid him down on top of the outfolded diaper, sprinkled his most sensitive areas with baby powder, and then taped the diaper over him. Miles felt like his fate was sealed with this diaper.
“Ahww you look cute with your thumb in your mouth like that,” Ryley cooed.
Miles quickly yanked his thumb out of his mouth, basically unconscious of it until Ryley commented.
“C’mon,” Ryley giggled, “Let’s go find you some clothes to wear.”
Ryley held Miles’s hand the entire way to his room. It took Ryley a good five minutes to find clothes that were “appropriate”, but she eventually settled on a basic Metallica t-shirt and blue jeans. Of course, Ryley helped Miles get dressed, but Miles was starting to feel too tired to really object to Ryley’s pampering. Turns out ugly crying like a toddler takes a lot out of you.
Ryley grabbed Miles’s hand and led him out into the living room where Lindsay and Dylan were talking.
“Hey Miles,” Dylan smiled at him, “how you feeling buddy?”
“Fine,” Miles grumbled.
“Great!” Lindsay interjected, “Now who’s ready to rock!? It’s almost time for practice.”
“Sorry guys,” Ryley sighed, “But Miles here has had a really big day, so I want to take him home and get him to bed at a reasonable hour.”
“I’m not even tired,” Miles yawned, “I can do this!”
“Miles you just yawned,” Dylan pointed out, “it’s okay if you need to get some rest.”
“Plus it’s already pretty late for you,” Ryley interjected.
“It’s only nine!” Miles whined.
“Miles, you need your sleep.”
“W-wait,” Miles’s head suddenly dropped, “H-how am I going to be a rockstar if I have a bedtime…”
“Ryley!” Miles grabbed desperately at the loose fabric of her blouse as he regarded her with glistening eyes, “I’M NOT GOING TO HAVE A BEDTIME, RIGHT!!?”
Ryley sighed, “I didn’t want to talk about this until tomorrow, but yes sweetie, you will need a bedtime, along with a whole lot of other changes to your lifestyle. But change isn’t always a bad thing Miles, I promise.”
Tears once again began rolling, but this time it was a slower roll.
“How is this not a bad thing?” Miles sniffled, “W-what am I gonna do?”
“Welp,” Lindsay tried to lighten the mood, “You could always make music for Kidz Bop.”
Miles looked up at her with clenched fists and glassy eyes, “Lindsay stop being such a… such a BITCH!!”
“MILES,” Ryley grabbed him by the ear and led him into the corner, “That language is unacceptable young man, do you hear me?”
“B-but Lindsay said–” Miles stammered.
“I know what Lindsay said,” Ryley briefly glared at Lindsay, “but that gives you no right to cuss at her. You will apologize to her, understand?”
“Y-yes ma’am.”
“Good. Now what do you have to say to Lindsay?”
Miles walked over to Lindsay with his eyes glued to the floor the entire time.
“Sorry Lindsay for calling you a–” Miles looked back to see Ryley’s stern face and decided not to repeat his previous mistake, “a bad word.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Lindsay says.
“And Lindsay,” Ryley’s ire had found a new target and her voice was prickly, “Don’t you ever –I mean EVER– make fun of Miles again. He’s had a long day, and he especially doesn’t need your antics right now.”
“O-okay,” It was Lindsay’s turn to memorize the carpet.
“Now do you have anything to say to Miles,” Ryley continued her reprimand.
“S-sorry Miles,” Lindsay muttered.
“Don’t worry about it,” Miles parroted.
“Good job guys!” Ryley’s icy tone had completely melted away into a cheery disposition that made Miles feel all warm inside. Miles silently swore he’d get emotional hypothermia from such a rapid change if that even existed…
“Now,” Ryley grabbed Miles’s hand, “We’re going to head home, and I’m going to get this little guy to bed.”
Miles passed out in the car before they even made it to Ryley’s.

Favorite Albums of 2018
There were a lot of quality albums released this year and a lot of them didn’t make the cut. My selections are, more or less, the LPs I enjoyed the most, but the rankings are also influenced by other factors, such as scale and scope; cultural significance; popularity; originality; degree of difficulty; and other qualifiers that are ultimately less important than pure enjoyment but inevitably influence how I listen to music. For better or for worse — both for my psyche and for the purity of my selection — I approach this process as if my list is as important as Pitchfork’s or the New York Times, and therefore I try to keep in mind a sense of the entire playing field, proceeding like I’m not one man hunched over his laptop with a specific set of tastes but rather a group of writers with myriad preferences hashing it out in a crowded workspace, arguing over and compromising on a list they feel will best reflect the year in music as they see it, as well as shedding some light onto LPs they wished more people would hear. Yes, I try to contain multitudes, which means certain albums are sometimes given a slight boost to push against my innate rock and roll biases because, ladies and gentlemen, if I say I’m a guitar man, then you’ll agree. I’m a guitar man. And this list reflects that, in the end, but I feel that I’ve come to it all honestly, without an agenda other than the promotion of the albums that made me smile, made me dance, made me think, and, maybe, made me cry, all the while knowing I must have an open mind or I might dismiss something special out of hand because it’s not “easy” for me to listen to. There’s an idea that music shouldn't be worked for, that you should just hear a melody and be captivated immediately and for all eternity! I don’t hear it that way, but I digress, as this is really just a long-winded way of saying that some music makes you work for its pleasures, but that oftentimes, when you do, the reward is staggering.
I’ll just address briefly the number one pick, Beach House’s 7. There was a time when I did not care for this band; I was even more of a rockist back then, in my younger days, and had them wrongly pegged as bedroom snoozers, which they are not. They are anything but. 7 is pretty and delicate but it is also loud, powerful, and bombastic, not without significant emotional edge. The melodies are sweet, but they are also sharp. 7 was impressive in its listenability and its execution: an entire album of well-written and well-crafted popular music that, while it does not alienate, also isn’t afraid to skirt around the edges of difficulty, especially when considering tempo and pace — these two are confident enough to take their time letting everything unfold and the result is their best album yet. If you’re a Beach House fan, then you know that’s really sayin’ something.
Enjoy!

UK Phone Hacking Scandal Fast Facts (CNN) — Here’s a look at the phone hacking scandal in the United Kingdom. Journalists at British newspapers are accused of making payments to police and hacking into the phones of celebrities, law makers, royalty, murder victims and other figures in the news. Most cases involve News Corp.’s News of the World, but the Sun as well as Mirror Group publications have also settled cases. November 2005 – British tabloid News of the World (NoW) prints a story about Prince William injuring his knee, prompting royal officials to complain to the police of probable voicemail hacking. August 2006 – NoW editor Clive Goodman and private investigator Glenn Mulcaire are arrested for illegal phone hacking. January 26, 2007 – Goodman and Mulcaire are convicted of conspiracy to hack into phone voicemails of royals and are jailed. Andy Coulson, editor of NoW, claims to be unaware of hacking but still resigns. May 15, 2007 – The Press Complaints Commission says it found no evidence of phone hacking at NoW. July 2007 – Goodman and Mulcaire sue NoW for wrongful dismissal. Goodman receives £80,000 and Mulcaire receives an undisclosed amount. Coulson is hired as director of communications for Conservative party leader David Cameron, who becomes UK prime minister in May 2010. June 2008 – News Group Newspapers pays £700,000 to Gordon Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers Association, whose phone was hacked by Mulcaire. November 2009 – The Press Complaints Commission releases a report concluding that there is no evidence of continued phone hacking. March 2010 – Celebrity public relations agent Max Clifford agrees to drop his lawsuit against NoW for a payment of more than £1 million. September 2010 – Former NoW journalist Sean Hoare alleges that phone hacking was a common practice at NoW and encouraged by Coulson. January 21, 2011 – Coulson resigns as British Prime Minister Cameron’s spokesman due to coverage of the phone hacking scandal. January 26, 2011 – British Metropolitan Police launch a new investigation into voicemail hacking allegations at NoW. February 25, 2011 – The High Court orders Mulcaire to reveal who asked him to hack phones. April 10, 2011 – NoW officially apologizes for hacking into voicemails from 2004 to 2006, setting up a compensation system for unnamed victims. July 4, 2011 – It is revealed that NoW journalists possibly hacked into missing teenager Milly Dowler’s voicemail in 2002 and deleted messages to free space, causing her parents to believe she was still alive. July 6, 2011 – Rupert Murdoch, owner of NoW, promises full cooperation with the investigation and calls the accusations against NoW “deplorable and unacceptable.” July 7, 2011 – News International announces that the July 10 Sunday edition of NoW will be the paper’s last. July 8, 2011 – Coulson is arrested on claims relating to phone hacking and corruption. Goodman, the paper’s former royal correspondent who served a four-month jail term in 2007, is also arrested on corruption allegations. July 10, 2011 – The tabloid shuts down, issuing a full-page apology for the hacking scandal on page three. The cover says, “Thank You & Goodbye.” July 13, 2011 – News Corp. withdraws its bid to take over British satellite broadcaster BSkyB, as Prime Minister Cameron announces a wide-ranging public inquiry into the British media. Bill MacKay - Acme Records and Music Emporium, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, September 14, 2017 / Ryley Walker - The Empty Bottle, Chicago, Illinois, August 12, 2017
Hey dudes/dudettes — over on Aquarium Drunkard, I had the pleasure of blurbing “Lonesome Traveler,” a new video drawn from SpiderBeetleBee, Bill MacKay and Ryley Walker’s splendid forthcoming guitar duets record. Go watch/listen — Kim Alpert’s accompanying visuals are very meditative. I could watch old train footage forever, couldn’t you?
You can also check out recent solo recordings from MacKay (via the new/excellent Milwaukee Taper blog) and Walker (a lengthy guitar improv taped by none other than Ethan Miller)! What a wonderful world.

Various Artists — Ryley Walker Presents Imaginational Anthem, Vol. 9 (Tompkins Square)
Kendra Amalie is featured on the Ryley Walker-curated collection.
Ryley Walker Presents Imaginational Anthem, Vol. 9 by Various Artists
It’s been almost 15 years since the first Imaginational Anthem brought Takoma-style finger-picking back into the spotlight, offering a gateway into a solo acoustic art form defined by Fahey, Basho and their historical predecessors, but continually reworked and reinvented by every new cohort of guitar players. Several subsequent collections have been guest curated by players including Sam Moss, Hayden Pedigo and Chris King, and now the folk-pop-jazz experimenter Ryley Walker has collected another pack of guitarists to make up Vol. 9.
Walker’s own work started in Bert Jansch-ish folk-jazz and has since branched out into free-jazz, krautish propulsion and the pop stylings of the Dave Matthews Band, so it’s no surprise that his volume is the most expansive and genre-unconstrained of the series so far. There are, to be sure, plenty of placid, lovely, rustic porch blues cuts, but also a good helping of noise and drone. Women are represented in larger proportion than ever—Kendra Amalie, Dida Pelled and Fire-Toolz contribute several of the album’s most distinctive tracks—and Pelled even gets to sing. Geographically, Chicago-based artists make a strong showing, but there are artists from all over – North Carolina, upstate New York and Israel for instance.
The best of the more traditional, folk-picked cuts include Shane Paris’ “Leicester Highway,” a slow, meditative blues, the notes surrounded by nimbuses of gorgeous radiance, the gentleness of the melody slashed through, at intervals, by sudden violent chords. Mosses, the trio headed by frequent Walker drummer Ryan Jewell, slants its folk influence into dreamier, freer-form territories, mixing jangles and chimes, bird song, little swipes of violin and ritual chant into its latticework figures. Matthew Sage’s “Camaro Canyon” unfolds with a languid, lyrical grace; the artist, who is also a university professor and author, shares the liquid clarity of William Tyler’s most recent album.
These cuts are wholly enjoyable, but the most interesting cuts are the outliers. Here’s the Israeli songwriter and guitarist Dida Pelled scratching out an endearing guitar blues about pets with identity problems, her voice as fresh and un-worked-over as the slides and bends she executes. And there’s Kendra Amalie, whose recent album Intuition dived deep into psychedelia, banging out a clanging, disruptive, multi-instrumented “Boat Song,” taking the blues and giving it a hard shot to the jaw. Kentuckian Pete Fosco conjures a seething, vibrating mesh of drones in “Variations on Themes for Blind Dogs,” where picked melodic lines dart in from the periphery, take over, and then fade back into the ambient sound. And the loudest, most dissonant track comes from Chicago/NYC player Dave Miller. His “Seedlings” turns up the knobs until the guitar tones blister and fray, finding an abrasive poetry in hiss and groan that might remind you of Bill Orcutt.
The International Anthem series has done a lot to promote a well-defined segment of the universe of guitar playing, and we all know a lot more about American Primitive styles because of it. Ryley Walker, though, refused to be hemmed in by what people expect from Tompkins Square. He colors well outside the lines, and by doing so, makes the whole genre more interesting again.

Singer-guitarist Haley Fohr hunts for a path forward with a colorful Hideout residency
Since fall 2017, Haley Fohr has been on the road playing songs from Reaching for Indigo (Drag City), the sixth full-length by her primary musical project, Circuit des Yeux. The singer-guitarist is finishing the tour and the year with a three-night weekly residency at the Hideout entitled Intentions of Sociable Creativity Through Light & Sound, which will retire the album's material, celebrate Fohr's relationship to Chicago's experimental- and improvised-music communities, and point toward the music she'll make in 2019.
When Fohr moved to Chicago in 2012, she rebooted the music she made and the way she made it. A native of West Lafayette, Indiana, she'd already spent around five years touring and recording, mainly solo as Circuit des Yeux. Even at that early stage, her well-trained and extraordinarily deep voice set her apart from her counterparts on the underground noise and punk circuits, imparting an air of authority to even her most rudimentary home recordings. Once Fohr settled here, her studio output evolved from grainy DIY snapshots to colorful panoramas that matched the dramatic potential of her singing, thanks in part to input from local musicians such as Matchess, Bitchin Bajas, Ryley Walker, and Moon Bros., with whom she developed working relationships.
Fohr's collaborative engagement with other Chicago artists also led to collaborations outside Circuit des Yeux. Fohr recorded and toured with Mind Over Mirrors, worked with members of Bitchin Bajas to develop the alter ego Jackie Lynn (which she used to explore a hybrid of country and electro), and played low-profile improvised gigs at venues such as Cafe Mustache and the Hideout with cellist Lia Kohl, vocalist Carol Genetti, and drummer Ben Baker Billington. During these encounters she set aside song structures and even words in order to explore what her voice could do in unfettered settings.
The three unique programs that Fohr has planned for her Hideout residency will celebrate the adventuresome, spontaneous spirit of those low-profile shows. She has associated each one with a different color, and they'll all feature light environments provided by Brownshoesonly, aka Chicagoan Nick Ciontea. The first evening consists of a first-time improvisational encounter with percussionist Hamid Drake and a piece for voice and horns played with Will Miller and Liz Deitemyer. For the second, Fohr will tell stories with Joan of Arc singer Tim Kinsella, then submit her voice to electronic settings and treatments created in collaboration with composer Olivia Block. And on the final night, an eight-piece version of Circuit des Yeux will play the songs from Reaching for Indigo using string arrangements that Fohr wrote with her closest collaborator, producer and multi-instrumentalist Cooper Crain (of Bitchin Bajas and Cave).
Calling from Prague on a travel day during her recent European tour with Circuit des Yeux, Fohr spoke about the residency and what's next on her agenda.
Bill Meyer: Each night of the residency is going to have a color theme? Haley Fohr: Each one is inspired by a frequency, which corresponds to a color and also a signature. The first night is orange, which is creative openness and sociability. The second night is green, which is the heart chakra, which lends itself to openness and self-love. The third night is indigo, which is in the spirit of Reaching for Indigo, the record I did on Drag City. Cooper Crain helped me arrange sheet music to be played with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra this last weekend (at Le Guess Who? festival, Utrecht, Netherlands), and it's pretty much the same songs that are on Reaching for Indigo but expanded to an eight-piece ensemble that features a string quartet, timpani, and vibraphone. We'll be performing that music, but I'll be utilizing my people in the Chicago music scene instead of some work-for-hire chamber ensemble. I'm really looking forward to it.
Attendants and participants are encouraged to wear the celebrated color of each night! I hope that people are excited and have a good time with the idea behind it, which is Intentions of Sociable Creativity Through Light & Sound. The idea is that Chicago is kind of weird in the winter, and I just hope that it encourages people to come out, enjoy the company, and have a good time.
Besides your concerts as Circuit des Yeux, you've played shows at the Hideout, Cafe Mustache, and elsewhere with Ben Billington, Carol Genetti, and others. Were those shows conceived as experiments? Most of those collaborations came within a very specific period of time between 2015 and the beginning of 2018. I had a very intentional goal of collaborating as much as I could, and the idea was to enjoy the resources of being in an urban environment in which many great musicians reside. In the process I did learn a lot—I think I kind of spread myself a little thin at times, but mostly just learning to see how people work and trying to pick up on their language. Truthfully I don't think I'm really that great of an improviser when it comes to working with other people—I find it still to be a challenge. But because it's a challenge, it's what I want to do.
One thing I took from those shows was that it seemed like you were finding new things that you could do with your voice. Can you say more about that? It's like a meditative thing for me. In some ways it's like I'm trying to find new places in my voice. I've found a comfort with this idea of newness and letting moments fall as they happen. Just because I live in Chicago, people invite me to do things. I honestly enjoy doing solo vocal sets in a more nontraditional or sort of casual environment, because it's not a performance, you know. It's just about, like, me going into a state and celebrating my own body. It could be really universal if you're open to that idea of just getting rid of context of any one situation and just, like, being real for a moment and saying we're all here, we have a body, and we've chosen to congregate in this moment and here we are.
You're performed under several guises. What's the difference between Haley Fohr and Circuit des Yeux? Circuit des Yeux is for my mental health—it's really more emotional. It's more whatever I'm feeling at that moment. And I think with Haley Fohr, I'm more of a composer.
What do you have ahead in 2019? Reaching for Indigo: Gaia Infinitus is saying good-bye to this record. It's sort of like putting to rest the Circuit des Yeux cycle that I've been in for the last year and a half. In 2019 I'm doing solo vocal shows under my name, Haley Fohr, in several cities. I'm doing Pitchfork Midwinter in February, and then I'm going to do San Francisco. It's called Wordless Music, and it's pretty much what I've been doing in Chicago for the last year and a half at these small venues. The idea is just to tap in with what it means to have a body and just to be able to physically exert myself, yeah, to open up this other world.
