New Romantics
Anastasia 'Ana' Davis has been uprooted three times in her life. The first time, it was 1942, and her parents decided to immigrate from Bogota, Colombia to Southern California. She was 4.
The second time, it was 1945 and her parents had passed away. She was shipped to an orphanage about 20 miles from Rydell, California. She was 7.
The third time, it was 1946 and she was just adopted by Thomas and Bianca Davis, the richest couple in Rydell. They wanted kids but after a bad miscarriage, Bianca couldn't have any. She thought Ana was sweet. She was eight.
From 8 to 16, Ana assimilated. She learned English, stopped speaking Spanish, and acted like the perfect daughter. Ranked third in her class for academics, cheerleader, tutored struggling students for free, was dating football player, Wally Winslow, and was best friends with resident golden boy, Buddy Aldridge. She was the definition of perfect.
But even perfection starts to crack. And those cracks just keep growing when Ana gets assigned to tutor Nicholas 'Nico' Barrera for English.
Nicholas 'Nico' Barrera was a T-Bird. He was Cuban and lived with his mother Isabel and his older sister Elena. He was smart, no doubt about it, but it's hard to try when no one seems to care.
All of a sudden, Mr. Daniels seemed to care when he assigned Ana Davis, princess of Rydell, to tutor him.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, at 2:15, Ana and Nico were in the library. Studying, learning about everything, including each other. Sparks flew and Ana panicked.
This boy made her feel important, special, that she was something more than her family's name. But they could never be with each other, it would never work.
They thought until Wally broke up with Ana and showed up the next day with Rosemary on his arm. So Ana let herself fall for a boy that could ruin everything she had worked so hard to maintain and she couldn't care less.
Nico and Ana managed to stay a secret for about two months. It wasn't an easy two months. The only people who knew were the T-Birds, Cynthia, and Olivia. They were always careful, making sure no one would know.
You can't plan everything. After unknowingly getting caught by Dot, the next day, Ana arrived at school to a vandalized locker and rumors spread around that Ana slept with the entire Rydell High football team.
So when your reputation is up in flames, you can either run away, embrace it, or give them something new to talk about.
So when you're forced to be perfect for the last 8 years of your life, all that anger bubbles up and it has to go somewhere at some point, right?
Yeah, after a rather brutal fight and a two week suspension, Ana was a new person. A person who was still one of the smartest girls at Rydell but also a person who didn't care about impressing anyone anymore.
Come the 1954-1955 school year at Rydell High brings more drama than Ana and Nico could have prepared for. With drama, comes a group of girls who are sick of how Rydell works against them.
So the Pink Ladies were born.
Anastasia 'Ana' Davis ~ played by Rachel Zegler

Bianca Davis ~ played by Brianne Howey

"I do hope this year, you will try to salvage the little good reputation you have."
Elena Barrera ~ played by Melissa Barrera

The Pink Lady Code
For those of us who are excited to hear the upcoming Pink Lady Pledge, I would also like to remind those who do not know.. They also have a code... Apparently.
Now I don't like/appreciate most of these but if ROTPL were to address them, I would appreciate it. Read them at your own discression, again, I'm just the messenger...
The Pink Lady Code.
Rule 1: Obey the Pink Lady Pledge: Act cool, look cool, be cool. Til' death do us part, think Pink!
Rule 2: At no time is a Pink Lady to become romantically involved with a non-T-Bird member. Restriction is rescinded only after graduation from school or expulsion. A Pink Lady will not date a: Jock, nerd, Preppie, anybody non-cool, or member of a rival school or gang. T-Birds, not NERDS!
Rule 3: The Pink Lady jacket symbolizes that the wearer is the girlfriend / consort of a T-Bird member. Upon leaving the Pink Ladies under duress (violation of rules 1 and 2, expulsion, illness, death, school transfer) or personal choice, wearer must return the jacket to the T-Birds to avoid damaging said T-Birds' reputations. `They got a Rep to protect'. Rep is everything.
Rule 4: A Pink Lady must present herself in appropriate attire at school at all times - Pink Lady jacket a must! Flashy, seductive costumes are not allowed, as they allow non-T-Bird students (and other males, staff included) to see what is for T-Bird eyes only. Seductive attire appropriate only to be worn at functions if accompanied by their T-Bird escort / boyfriend.
Rule 5: A Pink Lady is to have a cigarette and matches / lighter on her at all times, for herself - cigarette equals `cool' - plus her fellow Pink Ladies and T-Birds (and favored Rydell staff) who might perchance wish to bum a smoke.
Rule 6: No Pink Lady is allowed to interfere with other Pink Lady to T-Bird relationships. If the leader of the T-Birds is spoken for, unattached Pink Lady is not permitted to trespass on fellow Pink Lady relationship. If the leader of the T-Birds is available (Pink Lady girlfriend leaves - see rule #3), unattached Pink Lady may make advances on unclaimed T-Bird leader. See rule #4, apply it. The prettier the Pink Lady, the more interested the unattached T-Bird will be.
Rule 7: Returning to Rule #2, Fraternization outside of T-Birds, if all members of the T-Birds are accounted for - have Pink Lady girlfriends - unattached Pink Lady must remain single. Addendum: If unattached Pink Lady has interest in non-T-Bird student, and wishes to pursue relationship with said student, see rule #3.
Rule 8. Contrary to popular belief, (see Rydell school year 1958-1959 (Grease), Premarital `coupling' (Sliding into home base - thank you, Louis DiMucci) isn't a requirement for being a Pink Lady. Just don't die a virgin or die wearing your mother's underwear.
Rule 9: If you're a non-romantic friend of the Pink Ladies, you're a friend for life. Friendship (non-fraternizational) may include nerd/brainiac (good for assistance with essays), and jock. NOT allowed: Gossip Girls (Patty Simcox), or annoying cheerleaders (Stacie & Gracie).
ADDITIONAL - Added June 16, 1962 If unattached Pink Lady meets and falls for former-nerd-turned-badass-biker, who saved the butts of T-Birds and Rydell students, fraternization rules rescinded!! (Co-signed by Johnny, Goose, Louis, Davey, Stephanie, Sharon, Paulette, Rhonda, Dolores).
It may be just my personal opinion, but I've got a scene in my head that I would want to play out..
Hear me out.
I would want a situation where the Pink Ladies are at the Frosty Palace or down where they race the cars and a few guys come over and the Pink Ladies start getting hit on or flirted with. They are polite or some flirt back (but with no real heat behind it) and the T-Birds clock it. They stroll up, nonchalantly- a little smug because they are not worried about a damn thing because the girls can handle themselves and each TBird finds their pair with the Ladies, join their sides. Looking like a force to be reckoned with.
"Hit the pavement fella's. These lovely Ladies are spoken for."
"They looked lonely, not like we could see any signs to say they arn't."
"Dont need em. You're in TBird Territory. And eveyone around here knows... our girls are the Pink Ladies. So if you aint a TBird, you aint got a chance.."
"Meaning you can look, but you can't touch."
"What, is that like a rule of your gangs?"
"Our code. And yes. Always will be."

Summary:
Words don't always mean what you might think. Home can be as simple as four walls where the world can't touch you. A family is a group of friends who love and support you as you are. Sometimes healing involves breaking further apart, even years later. And loving someone means helping them put those pieces back together.
(Title from Icarus by The Crane Wives)
Notes:
Massive, massive thank you to my dear friend who enabled my hubris and betaed this for me, @look-at-those-niceass-rocks on tumblr (if you follow me there, you'll recognize them from the unhinged quotes lists as we watched the series together). Highly recommend getting yourself a friend like them; I said I wanted more Crane Wives lyrics for titles and they went through each song line by line and wrote down what resonated with the themes I was working with. This being over 16k words is entirely their fault.
Enjoy!
Note: this is a direct sequel to Steady, Steady. While it is not strictly necessary to read that one first to understand this, there are some references and symbolism that might go over your head otherwise, specifically in regards to my characterization of Summer Stock Girl.
(See the end of the work for more notes.)
The summer of 1957 promised to be a warm one. The sun hung heavy in the sky most days, unobstructed by clouds, casting a hazy heat over central California. Not the best weather to move house in, but honestly? Cynthia didn’t think there was anything that could wipe the smile from her face this week. The house itself was quaint. Much nicer than the apartment she grew up in, that’s for sure, but small for the number of people that would be living there. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and, for the most part, six girls.
The plan had been Jane’s idea, proposed in Olivia’s bedroom at a Pink Ladies sleepover during Christmas break. One semester at Stanford under her belt, and she was already sick of the dorms. Ranting about her nightmare roommate eventually turned into daydreaming about the five of them living together, which over the next few weeks, turned into a solid plan. A little house in between Rydell and Stanford, somewhere they could all get used to independence without sacrificing getting to see their loved ones. A place she, Olivia, and Cynthia could live year-round, and a nest where Hazel and Nancy could land when school breaks brought them back west.
And with an odd number of girls in their group, it was only natural that Cynthia brought up Lydia. To make it even, of course. She endured the teasing and kissy faces with a thrown pillow and a promise to give each of them the same treatment when she inevitably caught their boys sneaking out in the mornings.
For all their teasing, they were all very encouraging about bringing Lydia into their midst. She had never formally joined their gang, but she’d never been excluded, and they had never treated her any different than the other partners, and for that, Cynthia was beyond grateful.
And so, now, six months after that conversation, two weeks after signing the lease, her girlfriend was moving into their shared bedroom, and her face hurt from the grin that had been plastered there since the night before. A tired sigh made her look up from the clothes she was hanging in the closet and she watched Lydia set a box atop a small pile.
“Last one!” she breathed out, exhausted, wiping a hand across her brow as she walked toward the foot of the bed. There, she turned on her heel, arms wide, to fall backward on the mattress.
Cynthia chuckled at the sight. She moved, almost unbidden, from her spot against the wall, crossing the room in quick easy strides to sit on the bed next to her girlfriend. She leaned over the other girl, arm propping her up on her other side as she pressed a kiss to the spot between the girl’s closed eyes. Lydia preened at the affection, and Cynthia felt her arm wrap around her waist, holding her in place.
“Having fun yet?” she asked, and Lydia laughed.
“After eight months of shitty dorm mattresses,” she replied, relaxing further into the plush duvet, “you have no idea how good it feels to lay in a real bed!”
Cynthia trailed the back of her finger along the slope of the other girl’s cheek, tracing a pattern only she could see. Lydia finally pried her eyes open and caught her gaze, a storm meeting the sea, and Cynthia moved her hand to cup the other side of her face.
“Our bed,” she whispered, reverently, as if she couldn’t believe it. Lydia’s smile broadened into a toothy grin.
“Our bed!” she agreed.

Lydia and Nancy notice how much Cynthia wishes she could sneak off with her girlfriend like all of the other couples at Rydell. In their quests to be Girlfriend of the Year and Ally of the Year (respectively) they orchestrate a series of cute little stolen moments for them to be smitten teenagers like everyone else.
There's kitchen moments, kissing under the bleachers, drive-in cheesiness, lydia having a mechanic!cynthia kink, supply closet shenanigans, and more!

The Downfall of Susan St. Clair: A Conclusion
“I don’t want to hide anymore.”
It was true that Maisie had said those words to Susan. But she’d been imagining Susan finally dropping the Socs to openly hang out with her. Instead, she’d been convinced to attend a Soc event.
“Look more confident,” Susan whispered, touching Maisie’s hunched shoulders.
Maisie straightened up, nervously glancing towards the group huddled around the bed of a truck. There was no turning back now. People had started to notice them. Maisie couldn’t help sharing Susan’s smile as they watched the conflicting emotions on the Soc’s faces. It was a cross between disgust, curiosity, and feeble attempts to ignore her. Rosemary’s mouth fell open.
“Maisie!”
Dot popped her head out from the huddle, climbing out of the truck bed and running over. Susan had warned her beforehand, hearing the gasp of excitement over the phone. She neatly sidestepped as Dot threw herself upon Maisie, hugging her like she hadn’t seen her in years. Leaving them behind, Susan nervously headed towards Buddy.
“Come and look at the banner. It was my idea.”
Maisie allowed herself to be pulled towards the Socs, grinning as Dot proudly explained how the banner would be the reason Buddy would win the race. As Dot passed her, Rosemary stepped in Maisie’s path, jutting her chin out, eyeing the old cream jacket in disgust. Maisie barely gave her a glance, stepping around her like she was merely an obstacle.
“And this was my letter.”
Dot pointed out the letter ‘h’ in the centre of the banner. She appeared completely unaware of the tension.
“That’s definitely the best one on here,” Maisie reassured her.
Finally, Rosemary’s voice returned.
“Who are you?”
Maisie paused. She needed the second to quell the sudden surge of anger. Slowly, she straightened up, keeping her face expressionless, to stand face-to-face with Rosemary. Dot bobbed up to watch from her shoulder.
“You don’t remember me?”
Some of the anger leaked into her voice. Fear flickered across Rosemary’s face. Maisie smiled. She was no longer afraid of her. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted Susan holding up a hand to stop Buddy from intervening.
“She’s the Angel!” Dot announced triumphantly.
The Socs swallowed. They remembered Dot talking about an Angel, the person that had rescued them after the drinks were spiked, the person they’d all been convinced Susan was crushing on weeks ago. Rosemary bit back any other comments and moved the conversation back to something she could control.
“What colour are we going to use?”
Maisie let out the breath she’d been holding. Maybe she was still a little afraid of Rosemary.
When Hazel arrived, they were still arguing over the colour scheme.
“I think it should be purple!”
Shifting her glasses further up her nose, she nervously approached the girls. She had a plan, to become friends with them so she was no longer treated like an outsider, just Wally’s girlfriend. As she came closer to the truck, she realized there was someone else new to the group. Leaning on the far side of the truck, happily ignoring the quarrelling as she read her book, was a girl she recognized from class.
“Who’s that?”
It was an innocent question, but for some reason, it opened a space for her to slot in.
“She’s the Angel,” Pearl explained, mocking the ridiculous nickname, her voice low so the girl wouldn’t hear.
“Susan brought her.”
The group paused to stare at the girl. Hazel wondered what book she was reading. When they returned to the banner, a knowing look was shared around the group, including Hazel. She adjusted her glasses. At least, she theorized, she wasn’t the only stranger in the group anymore.
“I think red,” Susan joined the conversation. “For Rydell?”
Her suggestion was met with an exaggerated silence.
“Purple it is.”
Susan felt her heart sink as Rosemary turned, effectively blocking her from the group. This race was her idea – technically it was Jane’s, but she’d helped. She was supposed to be bonding with the girls over a common goal. Maybe the girls needed a little more time.
Hazel watched as Susan joined the girl, settling down so their shoulders were pressed together. She had suddenly remembered, on the night of the Halloween party, as Wally had protected her from the explosions outside, seeing Susan pulling an Angel to the ground. Susan leaned her head a little closer and the girl moved her book across so they could both read. Hazel recognized that level of intimacy. It was the same her parents shared, the same she wished to have with Wally.
“There she is!”
Susan led the march across the fairground to Jane. Her chest was still fluttering with the adrenaline from winning the race. Principal Nickelson looked bemusedly between the two groups. Crossing her arms, Susan smirked at Jane.
“Don’t you have something to say?”
She knew Jane wasn’t a sore loser, she’d seen how she reacted after losing the election. Still, she breathed a sigh of relief as Jane explained to Principal Nickelson that Richie was the only one at fault. Soon Buddy would return to school, and everything would return to how it was supposed to be.
“Sorry, girls.”
The smug look fell off Susan’s face.
“But Buddy already called me last night to confess everything.”
He could only shrug his shoulders with mock sympathy on his face as Susan found her world crumpling around her for a second time. She had made so many plans, had worked so hard. Around her, people complained and pleaded. But Susan had finally had enough. Enough of the jokes behind her back (and to her face), enough of the pity Buddy received, enough struggling to keep afloat when the world had given up on her. And - she stared for a second at Jane and Olivia hugging each other in celebration – enough worrying about other people’s opinions. Stalking through the group of Socs, she grabbed Maisie who’d been hanging at the back, and pulled her into a tight hug.
Understanding the assignment, Maisie quickly hugged her back, her arms providing the physical support and safe space Susan desperately needed. It might not have been a big statement compared to Potato sweeping Nancy into a kiss, but for the two of them, it felt massive. Susan buried her face into Maisie’s shoulder, feeling the tears start to prick her eyes.
And anyone who was watching would have recognized the love and affection in Maisie’s face as she slowly stroked Susan’s hair.

Phantom of The Mall Eric’s Revenge - Film Review
1989 Horror
Directed By: Richard Friedman
Starring: Derek Rydell, Rob Estes, Pauly Shore, Kari Whitman, Kimber Sissons, Gregory Scott Cummings, & Morgan Fairchild
Hi! It’s been a minute since I’ve written a blog film review, cause life has been life, but I’m back with this gem of a film.
I love 80s movies and malls. Malls not so much now, but that time period of malls… yes. Probably, cause I frequented them all my life and even worked In them. Nothing like their neon lights and aesthetics to get me in the film mood.
So, we have a movie about a phantom menace, seeking revenge on this mall because it’s his personal vendetta (watch to find out why). This phantom (Eric)’s girlfriend Melody gets a job at this new mall with her friends. You can’t work at the mall without your friends!
Needless to say the grand opening gets crazy. The phantom lurks around in the air vent tunnels and underground sewer, like a ninja turtle. He’s also a very skilled martial artist and fighter. Again, hence Ninja Turtle! Anyways, he kills a bunch of people on his vendetta quest, and becomes somewhat reunited with his girlfriend, after leaving gifts for her in her work locker, and car. Gotta love orchids. 👀
Mac’s dad from Always Sunny (Gregory Scott) is the real villain in this story, which makes it so cool to reference Mac’s dad pre jail, if you watch Always Sunny 😂. There was even a scene with him and Rob Estes in a Sam Goody, that brought back some nostalgia feels, (By the way I worked there in college).
Eric does all this crazy stuff for revenge in hopes he’d be able to get back with his true love Melody, yet she falls for the reporter played by Estes. Personally, if my so called boyfriend who apparently died a tragic death, really didn’t die and he came back to avenge his death, I sure wouldn’t tell him I didn’t love him no more and actually love someone else. That’s really shitty tbh. I was like Melody, not the time and place for that kind of talk. People are dying?!! True, Eric might be crazy on this revenge spree, but I kinda felt bad for his character.
Bringing Pauly Shore into the mix selling ice cream and driving a security motorcycle, just brings in the campy slice of heaven needed for a great film. Plus he dances! I also can’t forget to mention the music from Stan Bush was really rocking!! Movie soundtracks make the film.
I throughly enjoyed this. Go give it a watch for there’s even more to see and experience, that I haven’t mentioned.
Feel free to message me your thoughts via my Instagram @ starrymayx and check out more content there.
Until next time!

Here are my receipts: *spoilers obviously*
The Other Side of the Glass parts 1-2 (Bernard and Wooton find a mysterious symbol on a window that lead them to exposing the messed up business practices of some glass company)
Voice of Freedom part 1-2 (they don't actually SAY North and South Korea but like we know) It’s a club episode so I'm not surprised most people didn't remember it.
The Blackgaard Saga. (I'm referring to the mineral in the tunnel under Whit's End)
Rydell Revelations 1-3 (Morrie thought it would be funny I guess? This is why his father banished him from Japan.)
Angels in Horsehair (So yeah fun fact Whit can hit a target with an ax with his eyes closed and facing away from the target. Why? I don't know man, I'm just scared)
I made this up. Congrats to the 3 people who guessed it. I haven't listened to B-TV Trinity in a while and there might be a stingray death in that one but most definitely not on air.
The Unraveling (in this episode Mitch's tragic backstory is reveled. Turns out Mitch's girlfriend was murdered by the company she worked for because she was gonna be a whistle blower. And lucky us Mitch's sister has a recording of the whole thing)
The Twilife Zone (It’s a KYDS radio production where they do a whole episode on drug addiction but the drug is a talking rubber chicken. Why are the plots of drug special so often trippy?)
The Unraveling (oops I didn't realize I put this episode in here twice, bummer. Any way, no Novacom's ultimate wasn't to make people buy chips. However, they did in fact make people buy chips)
Malachi's Message 1-3 (A guy shows up claiming he's an angel and Jason's like nuh uh man you're just a loon. And the guy is like yeah, skepticism is rather in character for you Jason but I have a message for you. And Jason's like So do I, I'll fight you right here on this dock. Then the guy dunks him.)
The Top Floor 1-3 (Eugene's parents were abducted when he was a child. While being imprisoned they had Eugene's younger brother Everett, who in turn as a toddler was taken from his parents by their abductor and then raised as his own son.)
I don't think many people who are completely unfamiliar with the show will see this post but if someone does please vote I'm so curious to see what it would do to the results.

Chapter 1: Grease Is The Word
It's the last day of summer break before the start of the new school year and future pink ladies find themselves at the drive-in
“Grease is the word.” Jane sang as she walked past the soc girls. “How did she get that?” Dot asked in disbelief before realizing her lollipop got stuck on her sweater. “Aw, crumbs!” She whined before ripping it off.
“Susan’s going to be crushed.” Rosemary said in a faux sympathetic tone before her lips pulled up into a smirk. “We better go tell her.” Rosemary laughed, dragging the other three away. They run in front of a white convertible making it break harshly.
“Get out of the way.” Anastasia ‘Ana’ Davis yelled from behind the wheel. “Can you believe they let her back in this year?” Rosemary started saying as the girls walked away. Ana rolled her eyes, her grip on her steering wheel tightening.
Ana drove towards the back, quickly putting into one of the last secluded spots. Grinning, she grabbed the rucksack next to her and stepped out of the car.
“They think our love is just a growing pain. Why don’t they understand? It’s just a crying shame. Their lips are lyin', only real is real. We stop the fight right now, we got to be what we feel. Grease is the word.” Ana sang as the gossip exploded around her.
As usual, people moved out of her way and whispered behind her back. She could feel them staring. Girls, in disgust and slight fear, boys, staring at her ass in her tight jeans or at her white button up that was tied to show a little bit of her stomach and the top two buttons unbuttoned to show her collarbone. They always stare so why not have some fun.
Sue her for wanting to enjoy the last bit of time she had before having to follow Rydell’s dress code for 8 hours a day.
She moved through the teens, passing a white car with two couples making out and their fifth wheel falling out of the trunk.
She recognized the girl, Nancy. Her parents owned the Frosty Palace and she waited tables. Ana rolled her eyes as Rosemary insulted her. Girls like that never do change. Ana was brought out of her head as a car horn went off.
She turned to see her best friend, Olivia Valdovinos, with her head sticking out of the T-Birds car. “Move.” Olivia yelled at the girls who were in front of the car. “Didn’t think she’d show her face again.” Rosemary said to the girls who erupted in cruel giggles as Ana walked past them.
As Olivia parked, she lowered the top and hit the side of the car so the guys could get out. Shy Guy and Potato popped out of their seats as Richie, Gil, and Nico climbed out of the trunk.
Ana smiled as she went up to her boyfriend, leaning in for a kiss. Nico reciprocated eagerly, letting his hand settle on Ana’s waist. Richie smiled at some girls which caused them to swoon. Gil opened the car door for Olivia who just dropped the keys in his hand.
Ana broke the kiss, starting to tug on the collar of Nico’s T-Birds jacket. With a playful roll of his eyes, she took it off, letting his girlfriend slip it on along with taking the rucksack out of her hands. It was big on her. The arms went to the middle of Ana’s hands and it hung over her but it was his jacket and that’s all that matters.
“Se me olvidó que odio a esta gente. Vamos.” Olivia complained to both Richie and Ana who returned her annoyed look. “Nosotros pasamos todo el día convenciendo a la jefa que te dejará salir.” Richie said which was true. Richie and Ana spent hours convincing Mrs. Valdovinos to let Olivia out for the last night of the summer.
Olivia sighed, rolling her eyes at her brother and best friend. “Relax, nadie se acuerde del año pasado.” Richie reassured his sister which didn’t really help. “Cómprate unos cacahuetes.” Richie smiled, holding out two nickels.
Olivia took one but then took the other one out of spite. She grabbed Ana to walk towards the concessions. Behind them, they could hear Richie scolding his friends for staring at his sister.
As the pair walked towards the snack stand, both girls could hear and feel the stares of multiple boys around them, though most were for Olivia because you don’t flirt with a girl when there’s a jacket over her shoulders. Olivia pulled her sweater closer around her body and crossed her arms. Ana moved closer so the arms were touching
“Hey chica! Where are you going so fast, beautiful?” Neil asked Olivia as he fell in step with both girls who didn’t engage with the football player. “Oh, sorry, I forgot I need a teaching license before you put out.” Neil taunted, making everyone around them laugh. “Go to hell Neil.” Ana yelled after the boy as Olivia walked faster.
“This is a life of illusion. Wrapped up in trouble. Laced with confusion. What are we doing here?” Olivia sang as they heard a familiar motorcycle engine. “Grease is the word. Whoa, it’s got groove, it’s got meaning.” Cynthia sang. One of the only girls who would dare be seen with both the school’s whore and psycho.
The girls saw her greet the boys, hitting them on the chests in her own tomboyish way. “Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion. Grease is the way we are feeling. Grease is the word, is the word that you heard. It's got groove, it’s got meaning. Grease is the word.” They all sang as they danced.
The girls found their boys again as they all started talking. Ana found herself tucked under Nico’s arm, the same position she had been in all summer, and she had no complaints. “Sweets, where is it?” Ana turned to look at Richie.
“It’s in the bag in the backseat.” Ana pointed. Cynthia, who was closer to the car, grabbed Ana’s bag and pulled out two bottles of brown liquor, rum to be specific. “You are a gem, Sweets.” Richie laughed. “Fix my car during shop tomorrow and we’ll call it even.” Ana smiled as the boys started pulling beers from Gil’s glove box.
Shy Guy had come back with snacks so Ana and Nico were splitting a popcorn. “I can’t believe we have to go back to school tomorrow.” Ana whined as she popped a piece into her mouth. “Yeah, summer flew by. Junior year, can you believe it?” Nico uttered, pulling Ana closer to him.
“Yeah, back to McGee breathing down my neck. Yippee.” Ana fake cheered. Nico rubbed her shoulder. “Yeah, after last year, there’s no way she’s going to let you roam free.” Nico reminded Ana. “Whatever, no more talking about school and McGee.” Ana said, lightly hitting Nico’s chest.
“You brought it up.” He retorted, smiling at his girlfriend’s faux offense. “Whatever.” Ana giggled, wrapping her arms around Nico’s neck. Nico’s other hand that wasn’t holding the popcorn, wrapped around Ana.
“So tonight’s movie, are we paying attention or can we see it another time?” Nico posed a seemingly innocent question. “We saw it last weekend. Tonight, let’s have some fun.” Ana gave him a devious smile before pulling him closer to her for a kiss. The kiss was quick but with the promise for more
Their moment was interrupted by Cynthia’s voice making an announcement. “What do you say lady and gentleman? Let’s get loaded!” Cynthia said, holding up one of the bottles. “Ditch this passion pit and have some real fun!” Cynthia stole Potato’s bottle as he was drinking it.
“Sorry Cynthia.” Gil told her. “The T-Birds are on the prowl tonight.” Gil smirked, the rest, except for Ana and Shy Guy, not noticing how her face dropped slightly in disappointment.
“All right, boys!” Gil announced as he stood up in his car behind Cynthia. “First to get a girl gets the keys.” Every time they went to the drive-in. Luckily, Nico never needed to fight for the keys this summer because he had a girl. A girl with a really nice car.
Cynthia took a swig of liquor and let out a loud burp, making Ana scrunch up her nose in disgust. “I’ll stay with you. See the movie.” Shy Guy volunteered. “Are you crazy? You don’t go to the theater to watch a movie.” Gil asked.
“That’s how come they invented tv.” Potato teased, kicking Shy Guy. Shy Guy retaliated by hitting him back. “Hey, I’m with Shy Guy.” Richie broke the two apart. “These Rydell chicks are inept.” Richie said, making Ana look at him with raised eyebrows.
“Not you sweets.” Richie told the girl, winking at her. Ana rolled her eyes at the boy. “Not mad, just surprised you know what the word inept even means.” Ana shot back, making the group laugh.
“Now that I’m a junior, I’m focusing on college.” Richie told the group, ignoring Ana’s comment. The group laughed even harder. “College? You barely go to class.” Cynthia reminded him.
“Whoa, college girls.” Richie corrected. “I want the kinda chick who’s got her own mind, her own ideas, her own- '' Richie was cut off by Susan pushing Gil and Potato out of her. “Buy me a soda, Richie?” Susan asked, doing a weird thing with her shoulder, which made Ana roll her eyes.
“Let’s bop.” Richie smiled and followed Susan, stopping so Gil could drop the keys in his hand. “She is basically a balloon with a crooked nose and a blonde wig. She isn’t the poetic type.” Ana grumbled.
Gil and Potato left in pursuit of some girls while Cynthia and Shy Guy made themselves comfortable in the T-Bird’s car. With a final goodbye, the couple started walking towards Ana’s car.
The pair walked past the Socs as Buddy was announcing his and Jane’s new relationship. “Poor girl is going to get eaten alive.” Ana mused. The price you pay for a relationship, leave your old life for the new. Nico hummed in agreement.
Nico opened the driver’s side for Ana, letting her slip in before shutting it. “What a gentleman.” Ana laughed as Nico got in. The projector turned on and the movie started. Ana wasted no time, pulling Nico by the lapels of his jacket and kissing him.
The kiss was hungry and impatient as the young couple clambered into the backseat. Nico tugged Ana onto his lap, pushing the leather off of her shoulders as he trailed sloppy kisses down the column of her neck.
Ana let out a small moan as his lips brushed over a spot near the base of her neck and her fingers tangled with his hair. Ana started to fumble with Nico’s belt buckle when she paused. “Rubber?” Ana asked, her voice breathy and eager. Nico pulled the silver packaging from his pocket. “Always gotta be prepared, I never know with you.” Nico jokes, smiling at how Ana giggled.
As the two went back for more kisses, Nico’s hands started to swiftly undo the buttons of her top as Ana unbuckled his belt. Unbeknownst to the young couple, the Rydell rumor mill was turning about a shy brainiac and her new quarterback boyfriend and how these rumors will change their lives forever.

Elliott Gould and Sterling Hayden in The Long Goodbye (Robert Altman, 1973) Cast: Elliott Gould, Nina van Pallandt, Sterling Hayden, Mark Rydell, Henry Gibson, David Arkin, Jim Bouton, Jo Ann Brody. Screenplay: Leigh Brackett, based on a novel by Raymond Chandler. Cinematography: Vilmos Zsigmond. Music: John Williams. The Long Goodbye, Robert Altman's loopy take on the myth of the hardboiled private eye, holds up well today, thanks to Elliott Gould's performance as Philip Marlowe. A long way from the world-weary, cynical Marlowes of Humphrey Bogart and Dick Powell, Gould's version of the character is a guy who will go out in the middle of the night to buy food for his cat and will stop dead in the middle of the street for a dog that refuses to get out of the way of his car. Not that he's a softy, exactly. He's not above meting out his own brand of punishment -- a bullet to the gut -- for someone who's eluded the law. It's just that he sees the world as a messed-up place and feels sympathy for its innocents: mainly, cats and dogs. Otherwise, there are few innocents in the circles Marlowe finds himself caught up in. He smokes incessantly, even though no one else around him does, thinking nothing of lighting up -- often from the butt of a previous cigarette -- before he enters someone else's space. He smokes so much that it's surprising he has the wind to chase Eileen Wade's (Nina van Pallandt) car on foot for several blocks. The plot, as so often in adaptations of Raymond Chandler, doesn't matter so much as the attitudes on display, Marlowe's as well as the various people who are trying to prevent him from uncovering their secrets. Altman indulges himself in his usual overlapping, improvised dialogue, especially in group scenes like the one at the L.A. police station or the ones at which Marlowe is surrounded by gangster Marty Augustine (Mark Rydell) and his henchmen. (One of whom is played by the unbilled and mute but indomitably there Arnold Schwarzenegger.) There are some great set pieces, such as the horrifying scene in which Marty Augustine smashes a Coke bottle in his girlfriend's face, or the attempt of Marlowe and Eileen to rescue Roger (Sterling Hayden) from the crashing surf -- with the nice touch that the Wades' Weimaraner fetches Roger's cane from the waves. There's some entertaining filigree around the narrative edges, like the gaggle of nubile starlets who live next door to Marlowe. And there's some offbeat casting that, for once, works: Nina van Pallandt, whose chief claim to fame is that she was hoaxer Clifford Irving's mistress and ratted on him about his fake Howard Hughes autobiography, and Jim Bouton, the ballplayer whose behind-the-scenes book Ball Four tattled on the misbehavior of idols like Mickey Mantle. Leigh Brackett, who collaborated on the screenplay for Bogart's The Big Sleep (Howard Hawks, 1946), is the credited screenwriter, and apparently did shape the plot for Altman, but the dialogue has that off-the-cuff, on-the-set character of most of the director's films. John Williams's title theme, sometimes with lyrics by Johnny Mercer, is wittily deployed throughout the movie, as doorbell chimes or supermarket Muzak, and in various arrangements, including one for the municipal band of the Mexican town of Tepotzlan.
