LETTERING STYLE CHALLENGE 2024

Day 24: Automobile // Location: Rydell High School // Film: Grease (1978)

Today's prompt was automobile, and I thought it would be perfect for Rydell High in Grease!

Obviously my inspiration started with Greased Lightning, and I wanted this lettering to look like metal type you might see on the back of a nice sports car. Getting those long baselines was key. I think it turned out really well!

For the Lettering Style Challenge this year, I’m lettering locations in films—think establishing shots and the intertitles you see that set the scene.

Rise of the Pink Ladies, a prequel de Grease que ninguém pediu (mas marcou mesmo assim)

Olha, um negócio meio problemático entre fãs de Grease (o filme de 78) é: mais material de Grease. A sequência de 82 é mal falada até hoje (eu amo, e não no sigilo), a versão ao vivo teve uma recepção morna… eu não sei como a Paramount ainda quis mexer com a marca, mas há anos que uma série contando as origens das Pink Ladies estava em desenvolvimento e, enfim, Rise of the Pink Ladies chegou como algo original do Paramount+ — mais uma tentativa de streaming (que não deve estar indo muito bem) da parte das Majors hollywoodianas.

Rise of the Pink Ladies mostra que as garotas de rosa do Rydell eram como Avril Lavigne para Hilary Duff. Elas nasceram da necessidade de quebrar paradigmas que marginalizavam estudantes e de sororidade — afinal, sobreviver o ensino médio sem amigos é basicamente impossível.

Todos os lugares famosos estão lá — o Frosty Palace, o Rydell… e até um clímax fantástico envolvendo corrida de carros aparece na série, que sim, tem seus defeitos… mas também tem um elenco MARAVILHOSO, números musicais MUITO BEM PRODUZIDOS, figurino IMPECÁVEL (as vezes mais fiel a década que o do filme) e mesmo nos momentos mais CRINGE te faz ficar pedindo QUERO MAIS.

E é uma pena que a Paramount tenha simplesmente largado a mão de Grease, com toda a representatividade, as histórias e aquele ELENCO MARAVILHOSO QUE MERECE O MUNDO… e ainda tiveram a ousadia de apagar tudo da plataforma.

A norma do streaming é fingir que nada existe, pelo visto.

Por dez semanas, esse pessoal fez meus domingos serem mais felizes. Vi histórias de familiares e de pessoas conhecidas sendo representadas na ficção com tanto amor, com tanto profissionalismo…

Enfim. A showrunner está com uma campanha bem legal pra ver se a série encontra uma casa nova pelo Instagram @saveourpinks! Você pode compartilhar sua história e porque a série é importante pra você e marcar serviços de streaming e canais de televisão pra ver se alguma coisa útil acontece.

You’ve been patient, you’ve been good, and now it’s time to get Physical, Brisbane! International drag superstar and singer, Courtney Act, is set to join Queensland Symphony Orchestra as host and performer for Hopelessly Devoted: A Celebration of Olivia Newton-John.

Hopelessly Devoted: A Celebration of Olivia Newton-John is set to make Magic at the QPAC Concert Hall this April.

Courtney will be the fabulous host for both concerts, joining stars of the stage and screen. David Campbell, Jess Hitchcock, Georgina Hopson and Christie Wheelan Browne are all set to co-star.

Orchestral arrangements of her songs will be crafted by conductor, Nicholas Buc and performed by QSO.

Born in Brisbane and known as Shane Jenek out of drag, Courtney Act made waves in 2003 by auditioning in drag and placing 13th in the first season of Australian Idol.

She then went on to tie for runner-up in RuPaul’s Drag Race U.S. season 6 and won Celebrity Big Brother UK in 2018. Courtney has become an Australian household name, representing the LGBTQIA+ community on a number of TV shows, specials and Pride events.

QSO Chief Executive, Yarmila Alfonzetti is relishing the groundbreaking collaboration saying: 

“Courtney Act will make very welcome history (herstory) as the first drag queen to share the stage with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.”

Courtney, herself, couldn’t be more excited to be joining QSO on stage for this celebration of Olivia Newton-John.

“Who isn’t a fan of Olivia Newton-John?” Courtney asks.

“I’m thrilled to celebrate her music and legacy alongside Queensland Symphony Orchestra. It promises to be an incredible evening!”

All about Olivia

The queers and Olivia Newton-John have always gone together like “rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong,” and it’s not hard to see why.

Starting her career in 1971, Newton-John had several pop hits in Australia, the UK and the US.  Honestly I Love You became her signature song and first pop number-one.

Then in 1978, Olivia Newton-John was immortalised alongside John Travolta in the ridiculously fun movie musical, Grease.

It was here that generation after generation would fall in love with Sandy, the bright-eyed, sweet-as-pie Aussie high schooler from Rydell High.

Soon after in 1980, Newton-John went on to star in the cult film, Xanadu. A critical failure at the time, its soundtrack would then go on to be certified double platinum with five top 20 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.

Olivia’s Physical video and LGBTQIA+ advocacy.

In 1981, one year after Xanadu’s release, Olivia struck double platinum with Physical. It spent ten sexy weeks atop the Billboard Top 100.

The saucy, satirical music video for Physical was also where Olivia solidified her status as a queer icon.

Olivia starred as a flirty fitness instructor alongside oiled-up hunks in short-shorts, and some not-so-ripped men used for comedic effect (it was the problematic 80s).

Despite the overtly sexual nature of the video, it was the original end of this video clip that found controversy.  Two of the oil-drenched himbos walked through the doors of this bathhouse set hand-in-hand.

This resulted in MTV clutching its pearls and removing the homoerotic closing shot before it was aired. This, however, still wasn’t enough to stop it from becoming one of the most iconic music videos of the decade.

Olivia brought awareness to the global AIDS crisis by appearing in the 1996 film, It’s My Party, one of the first feature films that addressed the topic of AIDS patients dying with dignity.

Olivia was also a vocal advocate for marriage equality in the 2010s, being one of the first celebrities to show her public support for the movement in Australia.

Phantom of The Mall Eric’s Revenge - Film Review

1989 Horror

Hi! It’s been a minute since I’ve written a blog film review, cause life has been life, but I’m back with this gem of a film.

I love 80s movies and malls. Malls not so much now, but that time period of malls… yes. Probably, cause I frequented them all my life and even worked In them. Nothing like their neon lights and aesthetics to get me in the film mood.

So, we have a movie about a phantom menace, seeking revenge on this mall because it’s his personal vendetta (watch to find out why). This phantom (Eric)’s girlfriend Melody gets a job at this new mall with her friends. You can’t work at the mall without your friends!

Needless to say the grand opening gets crazy. The phantom lurks around in the air vent tunnels and underground sewer, like a ninja turtle. He’s also a very skilled martial artist and fighter. Again, hence Ninja Turtle! Anyways, he kills a bunch of people on his vendetta quest, and becomes somewhat reunited with his girlfriend, after leaving gifts for her in her work locker, and car. Gotta love orchids. 👀

Mac’s dad from Always Sunny (Gregory Scott) is the real villain in this story, which makes it so cool to reference Mac’s dad pre jail, if you watch Always Sunny 😂. There was even a scene with him and Rob Estes in a Sam Goody, that brought back some nostalgia feels, (By the way I worked there in college).

Eric does all this crazy stuff for revenge in hopes he’d be able to get back with his true love Melody, yet she falls for the reporter played by Estes. Personally, if my so called boyfriend who apparently died a tragic death, really didn’t die and he came back to avenge his death, I sure wouldn’t tell him I didn’t love him no more and actually love someone else. That’s really shitty tbh. I was like Melody, not the time and place for that kind of talk. People are dying?!! True, Eric might be crazy on this revenge spree, but I kinda felt bad for his character.

Bringing Pauly Shore into the mix selling ice cream and driving a security motorcycle, just brings in the campy slice of heaven needed for a great film. Plus he dances! I also can’t forget to mention the music from Stan Bush was really rocking!! Movie soundtracks make the film.

I throughly enjoyed this. Go give it a watch for there’s even more to see and experience, that I haven’t mentioned.

ブレスレットのペンの文字がかすれてはっきりしないけれど、赤ちゃんの誕生日は4月11日になるのかな？赤ちゃん誕生の記念品ですね。

中に入っていたのはカラフルな錠剤と…

金色のハート！これは赤ちゃんのへその緒をハート型に乾燥し金でコーティングしたもの✨これまた素敵な記念品！✨

で、ピンクのカプセルのカラフルな錠剤はサプリメントなのですが、中身は何かというと、ライデル自身の胎盤を加工して粉末にしたもの。

出産の時に出る自分の胎盤を加工して摂取するのが近年流行ってるそうで、加工会社いわく「産後鬱の防止、産後の栄養不足、体力回復、母乳の増加に効果あり」だそう。

考えれば妊娠中ずっとお腹の赤ちゃんの命綱となる胎盤ですから、血液たっぷり栄養豊富、効きそうな気はします。

が、胎盤を摂取してそんな色々な効能があるという根拠を示す医学的報告は今の��ころ貧弱なようです。

実質的にはおまじない的な側面のほうが大きいかな？もっと研究が進んだら新事実が発見されるかも？
