i do find it interesting that ruby stepping back from crescent rose was INCREDIBLY concerning for everybody, but as soon as the town floods and Jaune screams out every single member of WBY goes to comfort him. because his pain is louder than ruby’s. like they literally immediately disregarded ruby’s incoming breakdown and concerning behaviour. They try to make jaune feel better by pretty much asking ruby to say something inspirational or optimistic. but she can’t because she literally just had a panic attack mid battle and refuses to use her very cherished weapon
im not saying this to hate on WBY because I know they’re going through it as well, I just thought this was interesting writing
I will be a Ruby defender until the day i die

Boy If You Don’t Get That Rusted/Crusty Ass Finger Out My Girls fucking Face I Swear To God—
Tumblr media
But On A Serious Note Jaunes entire reaction to Rubys breakdown and attack on everyone quite literally proves her point. They are both right and wrong in this situation but Jaune fully blaming Ruby for everything that has happened is WRONG.
Rubys entire point of her anger and rage and breakdown was that she has never had the opportunity to process anything that has happened to her following the fall of Beacon. It seemed like everyday she had to be positive and upbeat and the leader everyone had to follow.
When they failed it was on her, when bad thing happened SHE had to be the one to come up with the plan. She was ALWAYS the one coming up with the plan and even though it failed more than succeeded she was the one who came up with a solution. No one else stepped up, not Jaune, not Oscar, not Weiss, not Winter, not anyone.
It was RUBY who had step up. Every time it was up to her to step up and when things go sideways it was her fault too even though noone else was stepping up with her.
So Jaunes reaction stocking her anger enough to cause tears is both warranted and expected.
Tumblr media
It's NOT her fault things didn't go as planned, she has a RIGHT to feel the way she does. Everyone is trying to move on and be happy as if things aren't bad or they seem to be ignoring things are bad. She sees her sister and friend finding happiness and choosing now of all times to get into a relationship and she just can't process why.
She can't process why now of all times when everything has gone to shit and she can't handle it and her PTSD is at an all time high.

I think Blake reminds Ruby of herself when she was younger with her immediate excitement realizing she was in a fairy tale and her taking more of the lead in the Ever After. Ruby resents who she was before and the fact that she can't be that anymore. She feels that she's letting them down by not being that.
It's just so crazy. Aside from Ruby being the youngest and yet the leader of the team, it's been one shitshow to the next. No one is okay right now. She was practically the leader of everyone, not just her team. And Ozpin's thoughts on leadership (which she passed to Jaune) weren't helping. This girl has had adults personally out for her blood since she was 15. And I don't think she and Yang ever talked about when Yang questioned her leadership decisions (in front of everyone) back in Atlas. I think she never forgave herself for Atlas (or Penny) and she doesn't feel like they have either. It's added insult to injury too because she knows that at least some of them think she's ineffective but they still look at her for guidance. She had literally just had a freakout and they were looking at her to help comfort Jaune too.
I also feel that Weiss and Ruby's relationship is a bit underdeveloped but I'm hoping that gets fixed soon.

RWBY Volume 9 - Episode 7 puns
Oh boy that was a doozy. The Paper pleasers Arc just about the worst thing for Jaune, naming them after friends and there desire to move on means his sanity is about ready to fold. Then things get worse when Ruby isn't able to do a blooming thing against the Jabberwalkers. Who thought it would all leader to Jaune and Ruby fighting, and then Ruby running off, hopefully she is able to find a little comfort after this.

I decided to watch RWBY Ice queendom
I ranted about it in discord for a little while, and decided to move the rant here.
Overall
I think, ultimately, the entire anime was pretty decent. A good 7/10, to RWBY's 9/10 for me.
I think it's considered "Canon adjacent", which seems like a decent way to put that. I honestly wouldn't recommend watching it until you've watched at least Volume 5, I think? Which is a weird thing to say, when it's set in the early episodes of volume 2. It uses a lot of characters that show up later, though, and I think it's better to get an idea of how things shake out first, before visiting the anime.
I think you can consider it "Canon enough", because it doesn't hurt anything, tbh. The story is entirely contained, Shion is not expected to return, and it doesn't change any of the characters (Except through mischaracterizations / Ruby's attempted character assassination), but it does help explain a few things and gives Weiss and Blake some much needed time to shine in a critical part of their stories that was a little too glossed over.
Spoilers for RWBY Ice Queendom, and RWBY (original) below the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, I'm going to break this into a couple sections, so, bear with me here. First up, I'm going to talk about the plot.
Plot
Plot-wise, the first three episodes are just "Volume 1 on fast forward, just the bare essentials to catch people up to speed", with episodes 4-12 being in volume 2, between episode 1 and 2. Like, literally, everything in the anime happens within a couple days. if not outright hours. It's unclear, but w/e. A lot of focus is put on Weiss, and more specifically, a lot of Weiss's WORST character traits. Most especially, her racism, her haughty heiress attitude, and her entitlement. In the original series, these character traits are lessened, and eventually glossed over. By the time we reach volume 3, they're sort of gone. This series takes the time to address that, and actually makes Weiss work for the character development we see in the original series.
Episodes 4-12 are all about this new type of grimm; the Nightmare. It possesses people, and they go to sleep, and whoever is most familiar with them has to go into the dream to go fight the grimm in there. It stays hidden, and most of it has to do with the victim's internal dream world, and how they subconsciously define everyone and everything around them.
For Weiss, who is the person who gets possessed, it means carefully segmented life, high walls, a mandate from on high to be responsible and care for the family name. It means locking away her feelings, the "Sillies" in a jail where they can be protected, and kept pure and innocent. It means categorizing her teammates as people she both loves and fears, who are locked in a tower and never allowed out. Her brother becomes an annoying bat who flies around and watches everything and snickers at her, and whispers about all the things he's seen and about how he'll snitch on her if she betrays the family name. Her father is a statue who stares at her from every angle and tells her "This is your responsibility!" Her sister, who NEVER TALKS, is a bible she refers to, in order to pass judgement. Her mother is a shadow on the wall who drinks wine and laughs at her.
And it also means categorizing Blake as an outsider. The racism really plays in full here, and you can see the conflict in Weiss's mind, because she clearly has Blake defined, not just as a shadow or a monster, but as a person with half a bow and one cat ear. She keeps the idea of blake locked away, outside the city, in a section where things are kept that she doesn't know how to cope with; things that she avoids thinking about entirely.
Weiss's dream isn't just about how she categorizes others, it's about how she categorizes herself, and the responsibilities she has to bear, and the way she feels completely and utterly isolated. She longs for contact, but in her dream she can't contact anyone, because she has to keep them away from herself to protect them FROM HER.
As an important note, Weiss also has Absolute power within the dream, to the point of controlling weather when she wants to, outright changing environments, and is "Stronger Than You" in every scene. Which is great, that's the way she should be.
This is as far as I'll go into the plot, because it's all that really matters and caught my attention. It's really just setting Weiss up for the future, and giving her a chance to go through a character arc that was too glossed over in the original.
Characters and Character Design
There are certain things that it did really really well. Anything to do with Weiss, they got perfect. They really understood the assignment; for an anime that is 75% about how Weiss sees the world, how she defines it and herself, it's no wonder they did as well as they did. She's flawed, and horrible, but understandable and empathetic. It really does not forgive Weiss for her flaws, but makes her actually confront them. Her character designs within the dream were.... GORGEOUS. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. I am not immune to the fascistic dommy mommy aesthetic, and they really made her look good. A 10/10 design all around, with the overcoat, the sunglasses, the hat, the floating hands to take the coat and hat off for her, the way she speaks UGH. Fantastic stuff. I could rave about it all day.
Ruby felt pretty good, too, and they actually set some of the stuff up for later volumes pretty well, especially the pressure on Ruby, and her depression. However, I think they mischaracterized her in a few sections, especially the parts where she is meaner? For unknown reasons? And also imply she has a hero complex who think's she's all alone? Which wasn't really addressed at any point, and was sort of weird. IDK, it felt like there were points where they were really trying to assassinate her character in some regard. Most of it can be explained away by the nightmare, but, frankly, it does push some weird choices onto Ruby that I was not fond of. Weiss calling Ruby out for being childish was handled well, however, and Ruby does do some growing up. An overall net neutral, in my opinion. Ruby's design within the dream is Good! Very cute! I like the snowboarder aesthetic. They did not do a good job of explaining why Ruby's scythe's gun was pointed backwards (I understand it was to shoot Shadows, but also.... she turned around... to shoot it...) but I appreciate the look. She feels like a very warm character, and gives a sort of soft, warm vibe that contrasts Weiss's design very well, perhaps even intentionally. As a Tower Silly (as opposed to outer silly or outside the castle silly), it really does show how Weiss see's ruby; as a warm, soft character who is a little bit punk.
Blake was fantastic. No mischaracterizations, and some better explanations for who she is, as well as a good set up for the Blake x Yang romance in later volumes. It also really showcases her fear of who she was, and who she was becoming before leaving the white fang, and it gives some excellent depth to her character. Her dream design is... okay! It's not particularly great, but not bad. The half bow and single ear was kind of cute, but, they could've showcased that better. Meanwhile, her nightmare design was FANFUCKINGTASTIC. 10/10 again. The way she took Adam's clothes, his power, and even the lines he speaks are really good. It really showcases how much of a hold she fears he had on her, to the point that she felt possessed by him. The way she was using his weapons, his semblance, not even using her own powers was filthy good.
Yang was... flat. I can't really say they mischaracterized her, but I do think they did not utilize her very well. She was a power house, but she really lacked the humor and charm that makes her who she is, her brand of silliness. She had the care for others that is important to her character, but, without the comedic balance, she feels a little empty. She had no major redesigns. She's just kind of flat.
Jaune was.... I mean, I never liked Jaune in the early volumes. Anything they did with him was better than the original. I honestly do not understand why they included him? But he was there, and he did some plot relevant stuff, and the rest of team JNPR was really sidelined for... unclear reasons. Pyrhha almost quite literally became an actual cheerleader for him, which feels like a deep mischaracterization. I can't even give her her own section, she was that little of a character. She gets, like, maybe 4 lines in the entire anime, and one singing scene.
Shion, as an OC for the anime, was.... out of place. Like, on an aesthetic level, at the minimum. Ultimately, they were more of a macguffin than a character, which makes them kind of just.... there. They're real cool, though. In japanese, they refer to them with masculine pronouns, and in the english dub, nonbinary pronouns. IDK. To say they were a character of importance kind of overstates them, though. You could replace the character with an object that does their power, and it wouldn't change the story a whit. They explained little, did little, and had no real character moments. Although their design does not really fit into the world of RWBY very well, it is very interesting, and pretty. I like the soft tones and witchy aesthetic, and the androgyny.
Sound
I watched in English dub, by the way. I prefer the original voice actors, who reprised their roles here. They do an excellent job, for the most part. I also prefer the word choices they used, compared to the sub, most especially when it comes to Shion. In the original Japanese, Shion has masculine pronouns, while in the English, they are referred to with They / Them, which is very nice.
There's some weird dub moments, but that mostly has to do with Lip Syncs, I think. It does still have a tinge of "This was translated to English", but only a tinge, which makes it bearable. Some of the mischaracterizations could potentially be attributed to this, but I don't think that is the case for at least my problems with Ruby. I'm not displeased with any of the voice actors, but the standouts for me are Weiss and Ruby, who did phenomenal.
Sound design was …. weird? IDK, they had a lot more magicky / lasery sounds to the weapons. I'm fond of the way that original RWBY uses the sound effects from Halo weapons. In the original, the sounds feel impactful and weighty, and really picks up a lot of the slack that the animation gives up in terms of weight. In this version, guns across the board sound worse, and the melee aspects are also diminished. There's just less crunch and dirt in them.
Ruby's scythe, especially, suffers in this version. The halo crunchy sniper sound effect gets replaced by this more…. idk, wet star wars blaster sound effect when it's shooting, and the scythe slashes are greatly diminished.
Weiss's everything sounds better, in comparison, with the exception of the Glyphs, which lost their signature sound, and got a different one that sounds less like magical ice, and more mystical? IDK how to explain that.
Music was also not as good. Casey Lee Williams, you are a genius, and the way your music backdrops original RWBY gives it a lot of the vibe and characterization that makes it what it is. That's not to say Ice Queendom did badly, it just seemed kind of generic to me. There was some flavor lost that they tried to capture, but just couldn't, with the exception of Weiss and Pyrrha singing.
Animation
The animation team really liked Weiss, and gave her a lot of character, and a lot of love. She's the only real standout, here. Design wise, everything looks good, but once it gets into motion, it just feels really stiff. There's a lot more weight to the motion in a bad way, a lot more movement, a lot less over-the-top action. In the original, the animation is zippy, and full of character. Things aren't just done, they're overdone. A character won't just spin once, they'll spin twice. They won't just jump somewhere, they'll use bullshit physics to get there. The scene that sticks out the most to me is a 1:1 scene in the first 3 episodes where RWBY is facing the Nevermore, and JNPR is facing the Death Stalker. Instead of the teams being mixed up at the start, and using their movement skills to get to their proper teams, they just start there. Those movement skills never really come into play. It's a lot more grounded, which feels out of place in RWBY.
A lot of RWBY's vibe really does depend the animation going "Physics? That shit is a myth," and then going wild with making the characters defy it. Ruby should be constantly using her scythe as a way to boost herself, but she does it maybe 4 times in the entire anime. In the original, that would be the minimum for a single FIGHT. In some ways, it suddenly feels like a weight on the characters, like their weapons suddenly have way less power than they do. Their enemies seem.... more impossible to beat.
I'd honestly say the animation, although it has more details in it, is just not as good as it is in the original. Especially these early scenes, when Monty Oum had his hand in it.

⚠️Warning, Major RWBY Volume 9 Spoilers⚠️
WhiteKnight - A ship I did not appreciate fully until the past few volumes
As I have probably proven with my posts in the past, My ideals on Weiss and Jaune ships are a bit odd. I’ve shown expressions of support for Arkos, Iceberg, and White Knight. And these are all ships that I love and always will love. But I wanted to make a post talking about how I feel about White Knight. Because really the more time and volumes have gone on, the more and more I really really love this ship and hope it becomes canon. As I have seen a lot of evidence for it someday being a canon ship, not quite as much as RG, but still a very substantial amount.
To start things off- I want to talk about Jaune’s relationship with Weiss, cause this is overall a far less complex part but still very worth talking about. As we all know, Jaune started off with a crush on Weiss. But then that slowly faded with time, instead his crush being on Pyrrha, especially in Volume 3. But ever since then, Jaune has shown signs of truly appreciating and liking Weiss’ friendship. And for most of the recent volumes, he has at first seemed to keep things mostly on a platonic level from my point of view. But, the more I look into it, there is legit evidence he could still have some serious feelings for her. Especially in Volume 8, he was devastated whenever Weiss didn’t come back with Winter. And it could be argued that he even felt this way in V5, with his devastated reaction to her being impaled by Cinder.
Next thing- Weiss’ feelings towards Jaune. This is a bit more of a complex and fun part. Weiss of course started off thinking Jaune was unqualified and not worth her time, even finding him annoying. Although, she did start to feel differently about him towards Volume 3, seeming to overall appear more friendly towards Jaune in the few interactions they had. Then, there was Volume 5, where it was shown it seemed she did truly miss Jaune and his antics, and she was grateful for his help at Haven. Clearly she was happy to see Jaune again and to be reunited with all of her former classmates. Then in Volume 6, She was even quick to try and defuse Jaune’s anger towards Oscar. Whereas around the time of Volume 1, she likely would have just made fun of him or done something else to make him even more mad. Then there was Volume 7, where she was quick to actually want to go see a movie with him and Oscar, a parallel to her rejecting his offer to see a movie together in the earlier volumes. Showing that she had grown more comfortable around Jaune in all this time. Then it became even more complex in Volume 8- to start things off- all of the characters seemed to be divided via people they were closest with/in a relationship with. Ruby/Oscar, Blake/Yang, and Nora/Ren. This would leave Weiss and Jaune as the last pair. That may not be actually concrete evidence but I do find it kind of fun and think that there was a choice there for symbolism, CRWBY loves the smaller details. Then we have the ending episodes of RWBY Volume 8, and in those Weiss showed more worry for Jaune it would seem. Even looking worried as he stopped boosting her aura and ran towards Penny. Then ofc, they sat together and she seemed to wanna keep her eyes on Jaune. Then finally, in the finale of that Volume, Jaune and Weiss were there for each other the whole fight. Weiss showing remorse for Jaune due to him having to kill Penny and actively wanted to help him out, physically helping him stand again after he fell to his knees. Finally- Volume 9. Of course we had Weiss saying Jaune was more “Mature~” and blushing profusely afterwards. But more than that, Weiss also showed genuine concern for Jaune’s mental state and also was the first one to try and ease Jaune’s mind over him feeling like a failure, like he wasn’t a good enough hero, and subsequently being the first one to hug him. She then also showed the most expressive response to Jaune being his old self again, giggling at his reaction to being back to his old self. It may not be the most concrete evidence to say she has feelings for him, but there seems to be a lot of stuff pointing to there being something there that wasn’t there before.
So while there may be less solid evidence for it than with RoseGarden, I really really like this ship and would not be mad if it became canon. It would make me happy to see these two get a happy ending together, they both deserve a happy ending after all.

Let’s Talk About: Rubys Isolation
Tumblr media
We’ve been seeing it throughout the entire om the rest of her team. Both physically and emotionally the Silver Eyed Warrior  has been dampening her emotions and taking a backseat to everyone else. While meeting the Weaponforger she says “She can handle it” but the dead look and monotone eyes she has that was far from the case. She’s out of it when the team is walking, barely registering Weiss words when she notes Yang and Blakes interactions and her melancholy with Pennys sword all point to this fact.
In the latest episode she barely speaks, letting the others plan and talk while not adding anything. In fact she seems almost annoyed, stating that if that’s what they want then it’s fine before Jaune walks in.
Tumblr media
Her isolation is proved worse when she is unable to fight both here and during their reunion with Jaune. Even with her weapon in her hand she is shaking, she can't process what to do. Her mind is screaming at her and in the end, she can't even hold her weapon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When she explodes on everyone and Jaune rebuffs her she’s not in tears just because she’s hurt she’s in tears because she’s hurt and when she tries to express this—albeit in the worst way possible due to said hurt she’s in—it’s just thrown back in her face and at that point she just can’t take it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She can’t take seeing her sister and friend happy when everything is falling apart.
She can’t take the PTSD episodes.
She can’t take seeing her best friend lament her lost home.
So she tells them all to Shut Up. Tells them to stop acting like everything is okay…because she can’t do it anymore.
Then she runs, fully isolating herself from those that need to help her now more than ever.

RWBY Beyond Predictions: Robyn
This is the second of what will probably be a four part series of posts. Before diving into prediction/theory crafting part of this post I will be linking a hopefully working link to part 1.
Spoiler Warning: As per the previous post there will be spoilers regarding the events of Volume 7-9 + the V9 Animatic and possibly the two Team CVFY novels.
Now with that out of the way onto the burning question regarding what Robyn focused episode might be like
Tumblr media
Why have Robyn be our second POV character?
Besides the fact that I'm a big Happy Huntress fan and love getting more lore/screen time with them, I think there is a lot that the end of V8 left unsaid regarding Robyn. We see her reaction to the destruction of Atlas and Mantle but not much else. So, giving her a focus for this new miniseries to set up how she begins to process the loss of her hometown will both be helpful for the audience going into V10.
Why not have Qrow be our POV character?
We have already had Qrow get quite a bit of focus in the V9 Animatic. So all having Qrow being the POV focus would be is to fill the blanks between The Final Word and the V9 Animatic. I don't think it's as necessary as setting up Robyn's "Mantle is gone now what?" arc.
Are Maria and Pietro dead?
Considering that Amity Colosseum is in Vacuo something that was was confirmed before the full animatic was released I think it's a fairly safe bet that Robyn and Company will find them alive before making their way to Vacuo.

OMG HOW DID I FORGET TO MENTION ILLIA?!
I mean, yes, her arc was awesome in the volume. Although I could have easily guessed that she would turns around and get on Blake's side, it was still done really well. I did wonder for a moment during the "trap" if it was the turning point or not, but she still needed a little more of "talk no jutsu" (the good kind of "talk no jutsu").
I don't much more about volume 6 besides the it's the end of Adam, and I'm wondering what kind of part she'll play in it, if she does.
Oh, and unrelated to Illia but I need to learn to stop sending those asks during the ending credits of the volumes... I just loved how Tayiang clearly didn't accept Raven's bullshit in the post credit scene. He could smell the trouble brewing 😂 (and last mention to that one shoulder bump from Yang that I've already seen, compared to another shoulder bump seen in volume 9, which makes me impatient to reach that volume)
RWBY WA out.
Honestly, I don't mind heroes talking down villains/antagonists. If the person is acting either out of irrational, uncontrolled emotions, a mistaken belief or ideal or being tricked then I think it's a perfectly valid form of resolution. Course it depends on the situation.
Um...Yeah, Illa kind of bows out of the show in 6. This isn't a spoiler btw- Episode 1 shows this.
My headcanon is that he intentionally dressed up Raven as a misunderstood but good woman rather than the non-malicious but still VERY flawed woman she is to try and give Raven the best shot she had to connect with Yang. And this is him going 'you fucked it up, didn't you?' I would have felt sorry for Raven...except that she tried implying he was a fool to their kid he raised (NOT PERFECTLY) and that was somehow the least bad thing she did.
Yeah...turns out Qrow, even with all his cynicism and abrasiveness, may have been the one in STRQ to give her the most benefit of the doubt.
Well, hope you enjoy 6! I thought it was among the best in the show. Granted, 7 and 9 are better.

We grew along with these characters in what’d that are personal to each and all of us.
Thank you Volume 9.
Volume 10, we’re coming for you
