“RVLTN” It hurts for every reason imaginable, like a hundred nails eased down your throat to rust in your belly; it hurts because Chevalier watches you without judgement as he kneels in the church, imprisoned in the giant rose etched in Clavis'—his brother's—blood. It hurts because the petals spiral out to the battered wings at your feet and the head resting on your lap the only way it knows. "D-don't let... don't let it scare you," Clavis smiles through sticky, red teeth and his own quiet choking. More than his tears, more than his blood, it's his laughter, even now, that stains you. It hurts because Chevalier's shadow hasn't scared you in a long time. Demons have no shadow, but Chevalier does. His shadow moves and writhes independently, trying to escape him. His shadow has one-hundred-thousand names because his shadow is one-hundred-thousand human souls. It hurts because Chevalier carries them so no one else has to. And yet it's his blood that fills the rose with Clavis'. And you smile, because you finally understand what you must do.

it is really awful how decontextualised iran's current state is in the minds of most westerners. like, the revolution itself had like multiple factions within it and on a broader level, it could roughly be divided between socially conservative religious nationalists and socialists. the socialists got punished before and after the revolution. And this isn't even the context that spurred on the revolution itself which is, of course, mainly surrounding the Shah's regime as supported by America and its allies.
