The Eight, Chapter 103
Tumblr media
Seven Korean Warriors and their Queen.
Always together. Finding each other in every lifetime. Their souls destined for each other for eternity. Sometimes as friends. Sometimes as lovers. Sometimes as spouses. Always together. Until around two hundred years ago, when the Queen vanished. The Warriors: Poet, Misdirection, Ferocious, Watcher, Mischief, Adventure and Passion, continued to find each other, always accomplishing great things in their lives. In their current lives, they’ve found each other and created the biggest boy band in the world.  When their Queen is found, and The Eight souls are re-united, they have to figure out how to live, and love, together again.
Chapter 103
After a slightly annoying trip down the hill with all three of her Warriors constantly trying to help her, it was snack time again. The Muse was living for all this food! She giggled to herself when she realized that this was going to be her third breakfast.
“Are you actually hungry again, Yeppeun?” Jinnie asked as he made himself yet another bowl of cereal. She just glared at him until he laughed and got her some cereal with fresh fruit in it and a side of buttered toast.
Hobi was showing off his awesome breakfast abilities, and Tae was playing along for the cameras when Jungkook made his appearance. He had his hair in the cutest pony tails. It took everything she had in her not to gush over how adorable it was. She had visions of her daughter bouncing around in the same hairstyle and smiled to herself as she finished off her toast.
“What are you thinking of, Yeppeun?” Tae’s voice popped into her head, “I didn’t think it was possible, but that smile somehow makes you even more beautiful.”
The Muse blushed at the sweet words and the feeling he put behind them, but refused to look at him or acknowledge the compliment. In fact, she was sort of annoyed he would use their connection like that now, after two whole months of no contact. It almost felt like a violation. As her soulmate, husband and Warrior, there was no part of her that was supposed to be off limits to him. But, as a pregnant scorned wife, she felt like she could do whatever she damn well felt was right.
Luckily with packing and the rest of the chaos happening around them, there wasn’t much down time before they were on the road again. The Muse ended up having to take the RV, sitting next to Hobi and across from Jimin in the back seating area. It was not the easiest to ride back there, and car sickness was a common occurrence. Jimin laid his head down to try and sleep it off, and The Muse had to get up and walk around a couple of times. Even though the vehicle was still moving, it seemed to calm her stomach down a bit.
They stopped for gas and found a little store off to the side. If there was one thing these guys could not pass up, it was the opportunity to shop. She had to smile when Joonie grabbed her hand and pulled her in to look at all of the locally made goods. He got slippers for himself and for The Muse, then stopped dead. His eyes lit up in excitement when he found the tiniest pair of sheepskin slippers he’d ever seen. With a little giggle Joon added them to his stack of goods.
Jinnie grabbed slippers, too, and then found a cute little alpaca made of local wool that he just had to get for Petal. She already had her own RJ, of course, but she was going to need this to know that they had taken her to New Zealand before she was born.
Hobi didn’t have a chance to shop for Petal. Tae and Jimin were next to him most of his time in the shop, and he didn’t know how to explain why he would want the cute baby things he had seen.
Once they were back in the RV packing away their buys, Joon found they'd bought two hats with scarves on them when they only needed one. Hobi went back in the store to return the item and Jinnie, never one to let an opportunity like this pass him by, talked the others into making it look like they left the man behind.
Jimin sat across from The Muse while they waited for the scene to play out. He stared at her, hardley blinking and never looking away. She gave him an uncomfortable smile and looked out the window, not seeing anything in particular as she felt the emotions coming off of him. Jimin was always intense with his emotions, and it was hard to ignore when he focused them all on her. At that moment she felt his regret and his determination.
“We will make it right, Yeppeun.” he said quietly before getting back into character and answering his phone, playing dumb for Hobi.
The moment passed, and they were back on the road across New Zealand. She couldn’t get over just how beautiful everything was. They stopped at a cafe for lunch that had many different animals they could visit with. She wanted to go see them when they arrived, but was unsure about being alone with Jimin. Well. Alone with camera men.
The Muse was squeezed in between Namjoon and Hoseok at the picnic table for lunch, and talked Jinnie into taking her down to see them quickly before they left for the grocery store. She decided to go along to shop because her snack reserves seemed terribly low, and she knew she could get Jinnie to get her something to munch on. Joonie gave her a quick hug before they left and whispered,
“Make sure you buy fresh veggie snacks, Yeppeun.” in her ear before letting her go.
With a giggle she pulled away from him and gave him a wink before climbing into the SUV.
She ended up sitting next to Yoongi in the back seat for the trip to the store. He had a pensive look on his face as he stared out his window, and the emotions coming from him seemed mixed. Like he kept changing his mind about something. With a deep, fortifying breath he slowly reached his hand over and took hers. His intention was nothing more than to hold her hand, she had to allow it.
She stared down at his hand and looked at his fingers. She studied them. The shape, the size, the dexterity.
“Is this ok, Yeppeun?” Yoongi asked her, his voice sounding unsure and vulnerable.
The Muse looked up into his eyes. She had no words to say. No response for him. But, she also hadn’t pulled her hand away. He took that as a positive and threaded their fingers together. His relief was tangible when she stayed still. He wanted to work on their relationship, and that was hard to do when she was continually avoiding him.
The moment the car parked in the lot of the grocery store and Yoongi let go of her hand, The Muse almost jumped out of the car and crossed her arms as she waited for Jinnie to get out and join her. Her brows were drawn together and she was staring at the ground as she waited to go into the store. Yoongi approached her to place his hand on her back, and she quickly moved away, leaving him standing alone and confused.
Taehyung was watching her closely. He cocked his head to the side and said,
“I see what Jimin means. You have gained some weight, Yeppeun.” he pointed at her belly that she had inadvertently brought attention to by crossing her arms under her breasts.
Completely outraged, and needing to change the subject, The Muse punched Tae in the shoulder and turned to stomp into the store with Jinnie on her heels.

Love on a Schedule | Namjoon
Summary: You were able to join the boys on their trip to New Zealand and comfort Namjoon when he is unable to enjoy the trip due to stress.
Inspired by Bon Voyage S4 : E6 when Namjoon decided to forgo cycling to work and the anonymous request “I was just wondering if I could request a Namjoon/reader oneshot based on the lyric “let them be them, let us be us” from Love Maze.”
Tumblr media
Director Junsoo to camp. Namjoon has decided to return to the campsite. Please ensure that the cameras around the site are ready for his arrival. No personnel is required to remain onsite other than camera op one. Once again, Namjoon will be returning to the campsite for the afternoon. Once the site is prepared, no personnel required to remain besides camera op one.
The rise in volume signals the departure of the staff that remained at the cabins for the day. Quiet murmurs spread throughout the common room as the men and women that expected to have the afternoon off to rest and prepare for the rest of their trip find this time put momentarily on hold.
Director Hyangmi veers away from the small group heading toward the door when she sees you standing near the front desk, holding your coffee mug. Moving to meet her halfway, you prepare to ask your question when she interrupts.
“You want to go, don’t you.” It was a statement and not a question. It seems as if she has gotten to know you well as that is exactly what you want. Her face is stern for a moment before it breaks into a small smile. “Give it an hour or so for the camera op to get some footage for the broadcast. After that, you can head that way. While the camera op is there be sure…”
“To remain inconspicuous. The camera shouldn’t see or hear me. Understood!” You give an exaggerated salute.
The director shakes her head as she chuckles, “I’m glad you were able to come along this time, Y/N. We’ll be back shortly.”
You return to your seat near the fireplace and continue to eat your previously forgotten lunch as your mind wanders.
Namjoon has been having a rough time lately. The month-long break was meant to be a time for the band and company members alike to recharge and refocus themselves: go on trips, visit friends and family, eat whatever they want, sleep the day away. While on paper and in the headlines this seems like a fantastic idea, for a person like Namjoon, it was a struggle. He had been working almost without pause for nearly ten years. His love and dedication to his work is something that he takes pride in, even when it is at its most challenging. So to have a month where the expectations are not for him to produce content but to stay out of the studio, it caused its own form of anxiety for Namjoon. While you weren’t able to be with him due to your own job, you know that he tried the normal vacation things: trips to other countries, countless museums, walks with his dog and bike rides along the river, dinners with his family. He did all of that. He enjoyed all of that. However, at the end of the day, he felt like he was neglecting what he should truly be doing.
You were able to join Namjoon for the last week of his vacation. He treated you to a trip that you had been wanting to take for as long as he could remember and ended it with a couple of nights spending time with both of your families. While you had been able to see his internal conflicts during the countless video calls you had with him and you tried to cheer him up, it was during this week when he opened up about how he struggled with the break. He confessed that he felt the stress building and almost guiltily showed you the notebook of lyrics, ideas, and deadlines he just couldn’t help but put into writing throughout the month.
Now, you were allowed to follow the boys to New Zealand and spend some more time with Namjoon, albeit interrupted time. You have to respect the filming schedule for Bon Voyage. Essentially if there is a cameraman around–you should not be seen or heard. This is when BTS having seven members comes in handy. When some of the members go on an excursion or begin to do something ridiculous, that is when you and Namjoon can have some time to yourselves.  The crew usually goes to the bare minimum shortly after dinner so you can usually spend some time with the entire group at that point as well. Otherwise, it was very hit and miss. With that being said, you were provided lodging in the cabins near the campsite and got to see the beauty of New Zealand while spending time with your boyfriend so you can’t complain too much. At all, really.
Coming back to reality, you notice that over an hour has passed. You grab your bag and stop by the kitchen before heading toward the star of your daydreams.
You see the camera operator leaving the RV as you make it to the campsite. He nods to you in acknowledgment and holds the door open, gently closing it once you are safely on the interior steps.
Namjoon doesn’t initially notice your appearance. His hands are in his hair, leaning over his notebook like a desperate college student trying to block out the nonexistent library noise after a regretful night of partying before an exam. You can hear faint sounds coming from his earbuds and can see the tension radiating off of his frame.
It isn’t until you place the steaming mugs that you brought along with you onto the table that he registers that he has a visitor.
“Thanks,” he says while scratching out something in his notebook.
“Anytime.”
Looking up for the first time, his surprised look quickly fades to one of curiosity.
“Babe?”
“Filming is over for a while. I got here right as he left.”
“I didn’t even see him leave.”
“Understandable. You were really focused.”
“How’d you know…”
“Everyone knows your here this afternoon, Joon. They announced it over the walkies. The director said they’d only film you for about an hour.”
“Ahh, yeah. I messed up their afternoon off.” He tosses the pen he has been writing with onto the table and leans his head back.
“That’s not it. They know you.”
He opens his eyes to look at you in question. When you don’t respond, he sighs and finally takes a drink from his mug.
“Have a seat?”
You run your hand lightly through his hair before settling onto the bench across from him. You grab a book from your bag before taking a sip from your own mug and making yourself comfortable.
“You’re not going to tell me to stop working?”
“Would it help if I did?”
A pause. “Probably not.”
“Then no, I won’t.” You smile softly at him. “I’ll just read a little bit while you work. Maybe I can even help you think of a word or something when you can’t quite think of how you want to say it.”
You take another sip of your drink before opening your book. The smile that Namjoon sends your way goes unnoticed by you.
After finishing a couple of chapters in your book, you stretch and take in your surroundings. Your feet have found their way onto the bench across from you so that your lower legs are resting against Namjoon’s thighs. Observing the man in question, he is in an almost identical position as he was when you entered the RV. You spend some time watching him: the tapping of his fingers against his head or paper, his grip on the pen, his mouth forming unknown words. Only after he lets out several frustrated sighs do you nudge him with your feet to capture his attention. He looks up and removes one of his earbuds; eyebrow raised in question.
“What about a change of scenery?”
“What do you mean?”
“Why don’t we take this outside? The sunshine and view might help your ideas flow better. It is starting to get kind of stuffy in here anyway.”
He looks around reluctantly, “We could open the windows?”
“Namjoon.”
He sighs. “Alright. It wouldn’t hurt to stretch a little bit anyway.”
Grabbing your book and a blanket from the bed, you take his unopened water bottle and lead the way out of the RV. You glance around the campsite and find the perfect spot to sit. The two of you take your time walking the short distance to the pair of chairs set up near the lake, where you lay the blanket out in front of both of them.
“Lay down.” You point to the blanket.
“Y/N, I didn’t know…”
“Don’t make it weird. Just lay down, please?”
He grins and lays down on his back after setting his notebook, phone, and pen safely in one of the chairs.
“Roll over.”
You sit down next to him as he does so before saying, “Oh, so you aren’t going to make that rated R?”
He chuckles and a smile comes to your face when you see his entire body shake because of this.
“Take a bit of a break, Joonie,” you say. “Stretch out and relax for a few minutes.”
He lays his head on his arms and looks at you with a smile.
“That sounds good.”
“Hmmm,” you respond before kneeling and beginning to massage his back and shoulders.
“That feels good.”
“Hmmm.”
The next fifteen minutes are spent with his eyes closed and your hands working their magic on the tension in his back and neck. The only sounds that can be heard are that of the surrounding wildlife and the occasional gasp or groan as you hit a particularly tender spot. You are content to continue for quite a while longer when you notice that his eyes are open and you can see the thoughts forming.
“I’m sorry.”
“What for?”
“For this.”
Your hands stop their ministrations and you sit back so you can look at him better.
“What?”
He sighs and sits up as well.
“We can rarely spend time together. And whenever we can spend time together, my mind is elsewhere. That isn’t fair to you. Everyone else can go to dinners together whenever they want, stay at home to watch movies, spend birthdays at amusement parks. But you’re stuck with me, an idol that can’t be seen in public even if he had the time and energy to go out. A songwriter that sucks at putting his thoughts into words. A stressed workaholic that can’t find a balance between home and work, even after a decade. A boyfriend that can’t treat his girlfriend like they do in movies.” He grimaces. “We have to love on a schedule. And when we do find the time, it seems like you are always taking care of me. I’m sorry.”
It takes a moment for all of that to sink in. In that moment, Namjoon seems to shrink into himself and looks down at his hands.
You place a hand over his and use your other hand to guide his chin upward to look at you, finally resting it on his cheek. The unshed tears in his eyes are mirrored in your own.
“Namjoon, you have nothing to apologize to me for. I enjoy taking care of others. That’s why I do what I do for a living. The fact that I have this amazingly strong, ambitious, and responsible boyfriend that allows me to take care of him, makes me feel important. Special. We all have a lot on our plates and you are no different. The amount of expectation and responsibilities that you have is unreal. You have so many upcoming projects to balance along with the responsibilities of being a leader and brother to the guys. But you manage it and you succeed more times than not. And the amazing thing about you is that you take those times that you don’t succeed and create the most beautiful and inspiring work from it, whether you share it with the public or not.”
A tear falls as he shakes his head.
“You are one of the most important people in my life, Joonie. Of course, I want to take care of you. Of course, I’d love if we could be together at all times of day and have that typical fairytale romance. But you know what? I absolutely adore what we have. It gives us both the opportunity to flourish in our own independence while also having the comfort of knowing that the other is just a phone call away. That distance…that makes times like this even more sweet and memorable. This relationship has not only brought me you, my prince charming, but it has also brought so many more people into my family. The guys and crew feel like my brothers and sisters. I hope that my family and friends are the same for you?”
He nods.
“So what if we can’t have dinner in the same room every night. So what if we don’t spend our birthdays together at arcades or amusement parks. That is what everyone else does. Let them be them. Let us be us. I absolutely love every single moment we have spent together. Every single trip. Every word. Every touch. It doesn’t matter if we are somewhere extraordinary like this or on different sides of the globe, speaking through the phone. I’ve loved it all. You are home to me.”
You kiss him gently on the lips.
“I love you. I love you the most.”
“Y/N, I…” Namjoon tilts his head like he can’t figure out what to say before he moves forward, capturing your lips in his once again.
“I love you, Y/N.”
Your smile is reflected on his face as you scoot to sit between his legs and lean into him. His arms come to wrap around you and he leans his chin on your shoulder. The two of you sit looking at the gorgeous scenery for an unknown period of time, sharing gentle kisses and touches, whispered promises.
“You know, you can go ahead and work on your music if you want to. I’ll stay,” you say softly after you give him a kiss on the cheek.
“You sure?”
“Hmmm. If there is ever a time when I want or need your undivided attention, I will let you know. Just like I hope you would let me know. Right now though, I just want to be around you. It doesn’t matter what we’re doing.”
“Alright.” He places a kiss on your temple before untangling his limbs from yours to stand up and retrieve his supplies. He soon returns, handing you the book you had been reading before laying down on his stomach and getting to work. You watch him for a few moments before making yourself comfortable, using his back as a pillow. You let out a contented sigh when you feel his back move slightly, signaling that he has started to write.
You’ll have to be sure to thank Director Hyangmi when you get back to the cabins for having the crew avoid filming near the lake once everyone returned.

Why I Attended Tribal College
Tumblr media
I have been fortunate to have had some exciting opportunities as a college student. I was invited to the White House and held internships at the National Science Foundation and at a university in New Zealand. I co-starred on a PBS series called CodeTrip, with two other computer-science students and I drove an RV across the United States, visiting top professionals in our field. My secret to landing these opportunities? It was my decision, as a Native American, to attend a tribal college — first Diné College, a Navajo institution where I earned my associate degree, and then Salish Kootenai College, in Montana, where I recently graduated.
The nation’s 37 tribally controlled colleges and universities are rooted in a unique mix of Native tradition and innovation, providing students with cultural knowledge and opportunities for academic and personal exploration. Many of them are located in rural communities often overlooked by mainstream institutions. Students can earn degrees or take general-education requirements without having to move far away from home or pay huge tuition, room, and board fees — which are out of reach financially for many Native students. Tribal colleges also collaborate with other universities in the region to create an easy transfer process. And students represent various tribes, ages, and cultural backgrounds, helping ease worries about being the odd man out.
Despite all these benefits, there is often still a stigma associated with attending a tribal college. After I earned an associate degree from Diné, I did an internship in Washington, where I was lucky enough to meet students from all over the country. When I discussed my plans to continue my education, some people would ask me: "Are you going to transfer to a real university now?" My answer was, I don’t think any institution could be more real than a tribal college. These colleges don’t have fancy advertising campaigns, strategic recruitment policies, or lucrative football franchises. They were created by and for Native communities not only to provide students with an education, but also to promote their cultures, languages, and histories.
I am often asked, "Why did you attend a tribal college?" I can’t offer a quick response, because I have to sift through many positive reasons. Growing up, I often felt either too Native or not Native enough. I was born outside Houston, but raised in a household where we proudly observed our Stockbridge-Munsee culture, as part of a Native community whose reservation is in Wisconsin. Often, as the only Native student in my classes at school, I would find myself having to balance these seemingly contradictory aspects of my identity. I had two choices: I could defend my culture while still trying to understand what it meant to me, or I could serve as the resident spectacle for students who had never met a Native person and felt no qualms about touching my hair or pulling at my beadwork.
When I tested into a magnet program at a high school on the other side of town, I was suddenly surrounded by wealth and privilege, as well as offensive caricatures of my culture. The "Redskins" were the school mascot, and I found myself trying to reconcile words like "Scalp ’em, Indians" with who I was. I became discouraged thinking about pursuing a higher education. After working random jobs for a few years, I found myself still longing to continue my education but I didn’t know where to go. How do you attend college when no one else in your immediate family has had that experience?
In 2012 I enrolled at Diné, after selling my car to pay for my first semester. The college walked me through the financial-aid process and explained the differences between degree programs. My course catalog, which stressed the importance of culture and education, became my bible. I found myself not having to take on any unwanted roles at a tribal college: I was not the school’s resident "Native expert," or "that Native girl over there." I was able to be me.

8 Budget Plan Friendly Trip Ideas for 2018
Updated: 11/8/2018 | November 8th, 2018
While many of us dream of traveling the world (or at least taking a few months off from work in pursuit of adventure), it’s not always feasible, even for those with the best of intentions. A lot of things can get in the way.
I frequently talk about long-term travel and round-the-world trips, but I know that realistically, not everyone can or wants to enjoy this style of travel. I don’t think traveling the world is hard, but I also know that what I do isn’t for everyone.
Some people just want to go on a cheap vacation for a few weeks. Not everyone has the time or luxury to take an extended trip.
So what do you do when you only have a short amount of time and a short amount of money?
What are some budget vacation ideas that aren’t about traveling the world?
Even if I won’t find you backpacking Cambodia for three months or walking the Camino de Santiago, there are many ways to get on the road and see the world without breaking the bank! Here are eight cheap travel ideas if you are cash-strapped and/or time-poor:
Cheap Vacation Idea 1: Be a Local Tourist
How often do you visit the tourist sites in your own city? Hardly ever, right? I know New Yorkers who have never seen the Statue of Liberty and Bostonians who have never walked the Freedom Trail. I once took a Dutch friend on a tour of Amsterdam because, despite growing up there, she had never seen the local attractions that lure millions of visitors to the city every year.
We’re all guilty of this. It took me five years to see the Jim Thompson House in Bangkok (even after living there), and I’ve still never been to Bunker Hill in Boston despite spending the first 24 years of my life there.
We always put it off until tomorrow, because when we live in a city, we think there is always a tomorrow.
We get so caught up in our daily lives we forget that we can have a cheap vacation in our own city. We don’t have to go anywhere!
If you’re short on time and money, there’s no better way to spend some free time than to wander your own city. No matter what its size, it has a number of wonders that you’ve never seen or even known about because you just don’t like! We’re busy leading our lives and following our routines. It’s normal but let’s look at your home with new eyes.
Be a traveler in your own town!
Important tips: When you become a local tourist, check out of your house and into a hotel, hostel, or guesthouse. It’s important to get out of your familiar environment because if you stay home, you’ll find something to do around the house and create excuses for why you can’t sightsee. Moving to a different location can help give you that feeling of adventure, excitement, and unfamiliarity.
Moreover, be sure to go to your local tourism office and get a city tourism pass. These cards allow you to see a wide range of local attractions for free or reduced prices and can be your way to see your local sites on a budget. They aren’t just for outsiders!
Cheap Vacation Idea 2: Travel Regionally
Travel brings to mind faraway and exotic destinations. It invokes images of all the places we’ve dreamed of and seen in movies. Because of that, few people look in their own backyard for adventure — as my Aussie friends always tell me before they jet off somewhere, “Mate, you’ve probably seen more of Oz than I have!” — but it offers just as many places to travel.
I could say the same thing as my Aussie friends. I grew up in Boston, and from there, I could visit New Hampshire, the woods of Maine, the bed-and-breakfasts of the Berkshires, or the farms of Vermont. New York was a four-hour car ride from home. How often did I do that? Not often enough!
Exploring your own region is an underrated and often overlooked aspect of travel. It gets the occasional lip service in magazines, but driving across the United States made me realize how much our own countries have to offer us and how often we overlook that for some foreign place.
There’s something special about being a stranger in your homeland and realizing you really don’t know much about it as you thought.
We think because we’re born in a place we understand it but every country has regional differences that make it unique and, unless we travel to see and experience them, we’ll never fully understand the place we call home.
Driving across my country (the U.S.) taught me a lot about it. It gave me a deep appreciation for it, the people, and the diversity within its borders. It broke down stereotypes and misconceptions I had about the different regions in the US. My time exploring my own backyard was just as important to my growth as any trip to a foreign country.
If you’re on a limited budget, can’t afford a flight or a trip to exotic lands, or just want to do something different, don’t forget that you can always travel your own country. It can be just as powerful as visiting another country.
Cheap Vacation Idea 3: Go to National Parks
The great outdoors present a great chance to go somewhere on the cheap. Camping, after all, costs very little money. Camping fees in national parks are as little as $15 USD per night in the United States, $15-40 CAD in Canada, $10-60 AUD in Australia, and $17-22 NZD in New Zealand. And in many places in Japan and Europe (especially Scandinavia), you can camp on public lands for free. Additionally, you go camping stocked with all your own supplies and accommodation (i.e., a tent), so you don’t have to worry about spending lots of extra money. Your food bill can be whatever you spend on groceries and nothing more.
You don’t need to love camping to spend time in the national parks, either. Personally, I hate camping. I’m not the camp-in-a-tent kind of guy; I need toilets, beds, and hot water. Luckily, many parks provide cabins. While hiking the Grand Canyon, I stayed at a national park lodge at the bottom. I had a room in a dormitory, but for a few nights, it was the cheap accommodation I needed.
There’s almost always a park nearby and spending a few days with nature is not only good for your wallet but also good for your soul.
Along these same lines, Camp in My Garden is a website that lets people camp in someone’s backyard (or garden). Got an RV that needs parking? Check out RV with Me, which finds cheap parking and overnight solutions for RV owners!
Cheap Vacation Idea 4: Book a Last-Minute Cruise (or Book Far in Advance)
Cruises are normally very expensive, affairs with a seven-day Caribbean cruise costing over $600–700 USD per person for a small interior room. And, if you’re traveling alone, you often have to pay the price of two people since not many cruise lines offer single traveler rooms!
But, if you’re the last passenger running onto that ship, you can find some sweet deals.
Cruise lines always offer incredible last-minute deals. No ship’s captain – or cruise company – wants to leave with half the cabins empty. If you wait until a few weeks before departure, you can find some really amazing deals as cruise lines scramble to find passengers. Plus, cruise operators always throw in some on-board amenities, free upgrades, and cash vouchers to sweeten the deal.
The website CruiseSheet often has cruises as low as $30 per day! (It’s the best cruise booking website in the world!)
Conversely, if you book over a year in advance, cruise lines also offer amazing low fares for early birds.
Cruises are the one form of travel for which I recommend visiting a travel agent if you’re part of a big group. They have wonderful working relationships with the operators and can score better packages than booking online.
After you book, keep an eye out on prices, because if they drop, you can often call your travel agent or the cruise company itself to get a partial refund or vouchers to use for dining and alcohol on the boat.

Cheap Vacation Idea 5: Think Outside the Box
Forget Mexico and go to Guatemala. Skip Paris and head to Budapest. Forget Italy and see Greece (it’s really cheap!). Ditch Brazil and take on Bolivia instead. The list goes on and on. There are countless cheap alternatives and budget destinations around the world!
Travel counter to the prevailing trend.
Zig when everyone zags.
If people are going in the summer, you go in the spring or winter. Skip the popular destinations and head off the beaten path a bit.
Contrarian travel will save you a bundle of money. It’s like reverse commuting. While others heading into the city in the morning for work are stuck in traffic, you breeze the opposite way hassle free. The same is true for travel.
The more you are a contrarian in where – and when you go – the better off you’re wallet will be. Plus, you’ll enjoy destinations more because there will be fewer crowds. No one loves a crowd!

Cheap Vacation Idea 6: Book a Last-Minute Tour
Just like cruises, tours are best booked last-minute. Tour companies need to fill the seats just like cruise companies, because once that trip departs, they still have the same costs. Last-minute tour bookings work the same way as cruise bookings.
Why are tours so cheap last-minute? Well, think about how people plan vacations. You get the time off work, you book your vacation, you buy your flight, and you go. Since people pre-book, prices are higher in advance because these companies understand booking patterns and then price accordingly. As departure time nears, companies know people aren’t likely to turn up and book on departure day, so they sweeten the price to increase bookings. So take the time off work, wait until the week before, see what’s cheap, and then go.
My favorite company, Intrepid Travel, often offers 15–30% discounts on last-minute tours.
Cheap Vacation Idea 7: Become a House Sitter
Accommodation can eat into the cost of a trip big-time. You might get a flight deal, but then accommodation — even if you can find it cheaply — might push the cost of your trip into unaffordable territory. A way around that is to stay somewhere for free. While I like Couchsurfing, it’s hard to do that for two weeks without annoying your host. A unique way to overcome this is to house-sit for someone while they are on vacation. You get free accommodation, a kitchen to cook in, and the chance to explore a destination in depth. It’s a pretty unique way to travel and one that I know a lot of world travelers take advantage of. You can even do this in your own region too, to cut down on transportation costs.
Cheap Vacation Idea 8: Grab a Cheap Flight
Nowadays, you don’t have to guess where the cheapest flight from your home would be. You can look up a whole list of flights (from cheapest to increasingly more expensive) using a site like Momondo or Google Flights. With those sites, you can type in “(the closest airport to you)” for your departure city and “everywhere” for your destination.
