Things to Know before Calling Car Breakdown Assistance in Auckland
What happens when your car breaks down when you are going somewhere? The last thing you want is to miss the appointment. When your car breaks down, the first thing you have to do is call a towing company. Towing service providers help you get out of the messy situation as soon as possible. You will get car breakdown assistance in Auckland and help you when you need it. Towing services secure the accident situation and offer necessary roadside assistance. The towing companies prioritise maximum safety and deliver efficient service.
Many people feel puzzled when their car breaks down. And it creates an extremely inconvenient situation. Calling car breakdown assistance is the most practical situation. The towing company tows the vehicle to your home, repair shop or desired destination. Unfortunate incidents on the road happen when you least expect them. However, getting out of it is the key. So, we discuss how car breakdown assistance helps you in sticky situations.
When Your Car Starts Malfunctioning
There are only a few things to do when your car stops running. Of course, you would like to wait for a few minutes and start the car again. Sometimes the main problem is a faulty or dead battery. In this case, a jump is enough. You can keep a set of jumper cables in the car, but what happens when everything fails?
You can share your location with the car breakdown assistance company and they will come to fetch your vehicle. Your car will be towed away as soon as possible.
Know How Much You will be Charged
The weight of the vehicle is one of the primary factors. Also, many towing companies consider the model, route, make and condition. Usually, the average car tow weighs between 1 and 2 tons. This means that heavy cars are also towed by small pickup trucks.
When the vehicle is towed, it also carries more weight. However, there are guidelines that towing companies follow in order to consider whether they have the ability to tow your car.
Considering How to Choose a Car Breakdown Assistance Service
When your cat breaks down, you should call a professional towing company. You should hire a company depending on the location. In addition to it, do not miss out on customer reviews. Whether you are on the highway or in the middle of the street, you need to get it out of the road. Make sure the towing company commits to you to reach faster to the location.

Wreck of the Alice A. Leigh or Rewa, New Zealand
The Rewa was once the largest sailing ship registered in New Zealand, originally named Alice A. Leigh (1889) and the 3,000 tonne vessel had 4 steel masts and 31 sails.
The barque had several adventures, she survived a collision with the German ship Rickmers, a minor mutiny in 1904 and, in 1914, made a very fast passage of 48 days for the 900 mile trip from Mexico to Newcastle. In October 1916, she was nearly sunk by the famous German submarine U-35 in the Mediterranean. Alice was sold in 1917 to the New York and Pacific Sailing Ship Co. Her last visit to Australia as the Alice A. Leigh was in 1920, she was the sold to George H. Scales Pacific Ltd. Of Wellington and renamed the REWA.
Her chequered history continued when she took a load of coal to Wellington, only to be embroiled in a waterfront dispute over the use of new equipment for unloading her cargo. She made her last major voyage to London via the Cape of Good Hope in 103 days, with a load of wool. She arrived in Auckland in August 1922 on her final voyage. In December 1922, the Auckland Harbour Board , ordered the REWA be removed to a harbour mooring and the proud 33 year sailing ship was ignominiously towed up the harbour to a mooring off Chelsea Wharf where for nearly 10 years she swung round her mooring, becoming more and more decrepit.
Rewa remained laid up off Northcote Point until April 1931 when Charles Hansen offered to purchase the REWA as she lay for 800pounds. Legend has it that he was “the front man” for a local syndicate, who wanted to circumvent the strict licensing and gambling laws of the day, by converting the REWA into a luxurious drinking and gambling establishment, linked to the mainland by fast motor boats. The REWA was towed by the steam tug Te Awhina to Moturekareka Island. The plan was to await high tide so that the 309 feet long ship could be positioned, to sit across the Bay on a sandbank, in a level position. Alas this did not happen , the Rewa slid off the sand bank, with the bow in shallow water, and the stern in deep water, tilted steeply over to port, totally unsuited for what the syndicate had intended.
And now my dears you know why not to rename a ship, nothing good comes out of it

Since 1990, ZK-CAW has been on display at the local McDonald's and periodically makes the rounds on Facebook.
However, very few people actually know its history. Now said history is extremely long, so I'm going to gloss over a number of details.
Built at Long Beach, California, for the USAAF as a C-47A-65-DL, it was given the s/n 41-10460 and ferried to Brisbane to join the 5th Air Force by 1943.
It was briefly loaned to 38 SQDRN RAAF from April-October 1944. But was returned to the USAAF.
After the war, it was sold to Australian National Airways (ANA) and converted to DC-3 standard at Melbourne's Essendon Airport. This conversion included replacing the P&W Twin Wasp engines with Wright Cyclone engines.
After bouncing between Papua New Guinea and Australia, it was converted to Viewmaster standard by Butler Air Transport and sold to Ansett-ANA by 1958.
It was then promptly sold and re-re-engined to South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand (SPANZ). As Airlines of New Zealand, it operated as a subsidiary of Ansett-ANA, much to the chagrin of Air New Zealand and New Zealand National Airways Corporation. The aircraft was named RMA George Bolt.
SPANZ became famous for their more permissive attitude and their ability to operate in the heavily state owned airline industry in Aotearoa. To the point where the Auckland Star hilariously referred to SPANZ as capitalist and NZNAC as communist because you could smoke on SPANZ DC-3s. Furthermore, the NZNAC Skyliner DC-3s were done in order to compete with SPANZ.
After being sold to NZNAC for NZ£14,100 it went back to Australia and was briefly operated by Qantas Empire Airways and Fiji Airways* before being sold back to NZNAC in 1969.
It briefly operated for Mt. Cook Airlines and was slated for operations with South Seas Airways, but this fell through.
And so it was instead sold to Fieldair Ltd (t/as Airland) and renamed Whio. It ended its working life as an Ag-Dak in 1985, having flown 56,232 hours. It was towed to Whanganui with the intentions of being made airworthy by Wanganui Airwork. This was deemed impractical, and so she was instead taken up to Taupō for refurbishment to Viewmaster standard in 1989.
Finally, in 1990, she was moved from the Taupo Car Sales / Aeroplane Car Co yard to McDonald's, where she remains.
For a full history, click here. For further reading on SPANZ and the Viewmaster standard DC-3, see SPANZ: South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand and Their DC-3 Viewmasters by Richard Waugh and Peter Layne.
*Likely the first Fiji Airways, not the rebranded Air Pacific.

It’s spring season for the America’s Cup as the boats to compete in the 37th edition come out of the sheds and into the daylight. So far it has been Great Britain, Switzerland, and USA, but the biggest splash is now defender New Zealand.
After an intensive 10 month building program, Emirates Team New Zealand’s brand new AC75 had been transported under the cover of darkness from the team’s North Shore build facility to their Wynyard Point base, and then emerged on April 11 in preparation for its launch and commissioning phase in Auckland.
“It is always a pretty significant moment for any team. The first time their race boat emerges from the shed and sees the light of day,” said Emirates Team New Zealand COO Kevin Shoebridge. “So much of any America’s Cup campaign goes on behind closed doors and with the utmost secrecy protecting designs and plans, but there always comes a time when you need to show some of your cards.”
While the full naming ceremony and blessing is not scheduled until later this month, the Kiwis wasted little time to get on the water. With the weather clearing in Auckland, they quietly launch the raceboat a day later, not only for tow-testing but the sailors also managed to launch sails and be the first boat of the new AC75 cycle to actually sail.

The wreck of the Josephine Willis
The Josephine Willis, a packet ship launched in 1854, undertook a voyage to New Zealand under the command of Captain Edward Canney. During the voyage, there was an attempted mutiny by the crew. Twelve crew members deserted in Auckland, while others were dismissed in Calcutta on the return voyage. However, the second voyage, which started on 1 February 1856, was interesting. With a crew of 44 and 66 passengers, the ship again travelled to New Zealand. The ship had various general cargoes on board, including a large quantity of utility ceramics destined for the emigrant market in New Zealand.
The sinking of the Josephine Willis (x)
The ship was first towed to Margate Sands by a steam tug before sailing on to the Downs. After reaching South Foreland, the Josephine Willis travelled down the English Channel and at 20:10 a light was sighted. It was believed to be the Dungeness lighthouse and the helm was put to starboard. However, the light belonged to an approaching steamer, the SS Mangerton, an iron-hulled screw steamer en route from Limerick to London. The Mangerton struck the Josephine Willis just forward of the main mast on the starboard side and is said to have cut the ship in half. Some of the crew and passengers were able to climb aboard the Mangerton, while others escaped in the ship's boats. However, it happened that the two ships involved did nothing to rescue the other passengers, which is why the captains responsible were later held responsible and sentenced for reckless behaviour. During the incident, however, the Josephine Willis later capsised and sank. Between 69 and 70 people lost their lives in the accident, including Captain Canney.
3D image of the 'Josephine Willis' wreck (x)
Dives were quickly undertaken to salvage the passengers' cargo and luggage. Amongst other things, a mahogany chest containing the ship's board and Captain Canney's personal belongings were recovered and handed over to his widow. Salvage work on the wreck continued until 1861.
Ceramics in situ (x)
The wreck was rediscovered by divers in approximately 2018. Diving investigation revealed that a large quantity of the ceramic cargo was still in situ. The ceramic assemblage is principally comprised of wares from three Staffordshire based potteries - Mexborough, Charles Meigh, and Davenport. Several of the ceramic types discovered are unknown in current museum collections, or have previously only been seen in the form of wasters.
Recovered ceramics (x)
Interpretation of geophysical data indicates that the full length of the vessel survives in situ, with a maximum length of 46m, and a maximum width of 10-11m, which is consistent with the known dimensions of the vessel. A potential vertical break in the hull is located approximately halfway along the wreck mound. This corresponds with the position which the Mangerton was reported to have collided with the Josephine Willis. It would appear that the wreck has broken it's back and the remaining structure lies in two halves.
Recovered toys and caramics (x)

Adieu Kea, you will be missed.
The last of Auckland's double-ender ferries was towed out of Silo Marina today (30/08/23) by the tug Christine Mary. She is to be taken back to Whangarei and scrapped.
Built by WECO for Fullers in 1988, Kea was the last of the double-enders and entered service around the same time as Quick Cat. Owing to her top speed of 11 kn, Kea only ever ran between Auckland and Devonport in her early life. Kea took over the Auckland-Matiatia run for a time from Quick Cat, a journey of 2 hours (versus the current journey time of 40 minutes).
At some point Kea gained the nickname Seabus.
RIP Kea, 1988-2023.
