👀 glow (Sam X Ruth)? :)
ooh okay. i wrote some of a 5 times fic that i really liked, without connecting all the pieces, so this is a long excerpt set after s3:
Ruth’s flight to Denver gave her time to calm down from the rollercoaster of emotions that was Debbie’s offer. It was almost–but not quite–enough time to let go of Debbie’s face, too, that bewildered and hurt expression as Ruth left her standing there.
That one might’ve been easier to let go of if she couldn’t still see Sam on the streets of Los Angeles, bewildered. Hurt.
She was really ending her year on a very specific note, Ruth thought. A pattern. A lousy one.
Her layover in Denver was scheduled to last almost an hour. Even after crossing the terminal to get to her departure gate, Ruth had more than thirty minutes until boarding.
She sat along the far wall of the gate, the florescent hum of the lights and buzz of Christmas travelers swirling around her, and reached for her pen. No time like the present to try and figure out what she wanted.
Debbie wanted her to direct, and she knew that wasn’t for her. So what do you want, Ruth? She asked herself, pen tapping against paper. What is it?
The question sounded more like Sam than her own inner voice, which only served to annoy her. Wasn’t he in her head enough?
“Ruth.”
Oh, great. Now she really was hearing him. Could stress lead to hallucinations? Because she hadn’t thought she was quite that freaked out.
“Ruth?”
Fuck.
She felt him in front of her before she looked up. He cast a long shadow.
“Sam?”
“Hey.”
“What are you doing here?”
“It’s nice to see you, too.”
“This is–we’re in Denver,” she continued, wide eyes fixed on him.
“Yeah, no shit. I know where we are.”
“Are you scouting for a location?” Her brow furrowed. “Is Justine with you?”
“No. And no. Uh, Sheila called me.”
“Really.”
“Yes. She said to tell you, ‘you can keep the socks.’ I’m guessing you’ll know what that means, because I don’t have a fucking clue. But it’s Sheila, so I’m pretty used to that.”
The socks she’d gotten in the gift exchange were cute, with little reindeer on them. She’d thanked Sheila at the time, and promised to wear them in Omaha. Now she understood her friend’s slight smile, the way she’d nodded and held her tongue.
Merry Christmas to you too, she sent towards Baltimore, then squared her shoulders to stare Sam down.
“Okay, so Sheila told you where to find me. That doesn’t explain why you came.”
“To see you. To talk.”
“We tried that in L.A. I think we said enough. And my flight will be boarding soon.”
“You’ve got more than twenty minutes! What else are you gonna do, find pen pals?”
“Mean,” Ruth shot back halfheartedly. She hated even admitting it to herself, but she had been missing him already.
“I bought a fucking plane ticket to come find you,” Sam said, softer. “If you don’t want to talk to me, then don’t talk. Listen. Okay? Would you-would you just listen?”
“Fine.”
She patted the empty seat next to her, watching with amusement as Sam tried to settle comfortably into a chair that was uncomfortable by design.
“I’m not trying to spring anything on you. Or chase you, or anything. I didn’t want to say this over the phone.”
“What could you possibly have to say, what else?” Ruth was working herself up for round two, he could see it like a gathering cloud, and they didn’t have time for that today. “You already told me you loved me, completely out of nowhere, and then you told me you wanted to try, and then you–”
“I had a heart attack.”
“What?”
That stopped her mid-argument. He watched her backpedal and try to catch up.
“Sam–you what? You had a heart attack? When? Why didn’t you…”
Ruth let go of the rest of her question, not sure she actually wanted to know the answer. Why would he have told her? They hadn’t even spoken, since.
“Yeah.” Sam nodded, as though she’d said something else. “I, uh, I didn’t tell Justine either, so if you could keep that to yourself for now, I’d appreciate it. I’m going to tell her, eventually, but it’s her first movie, and it means so much to her.”
“Sam.” Ruth’s voice twisted. He knew that tone; it meant tears were up next.
“Jesus. Please don’t start that, okay? I didn’t tell you for dramatic effect.”
“Why did you tell me?”
“I meant what I said, before, about wanting to be honest with you. I meant that.”
“Okay…”
“So, I told you about the movie because I didn’t want you to think I’d used the part as a, as some kind of trick to get you to L.A. Just because I missed you. I did miss you, and I did want you there, but I never would’ve lied to you for that.”
“It doesn’t matter, Sam. It’s fine. I’m going home for Christmas, and I’m going to use the break to figure out what I want to do next. It’s fine. It’s over.”
“It’s not fine! Nothing about this is fine, Ruth. What the fuck. I left you standing on the street thinking I’m, I don’t know, one of those creeps who pushes too hard or lies to get you into bed, and I don’t want you thinking that. Go home to Omaha, move on with your life, whatever, but I couldn’t leave it like that. Not with you remembering me as some old asshole who broke your heart.”
The corner of her mouth twitched, but the tears held back from spilling, just barely. “You’re not old.”
“Sure. Right. Just an asshole, then.”
“Yeah.” She smiled, a peace offering. “And you didn’t break my heart.”
“Hm.”
“Bruised it, maybe. A bit.”
“Oh, is that all.”
“Yeah. I’m the one who’s good at that,” she admitted, staring out at the terminal instead of at him. “I break my own heart. Chasing parts, chasing men, chasing…something, I don’t even know what except I know I haven’t found it yet.”
Now she looked back at him, blue eyes blazing. “Debbie offered me a job, directing. Running a show. On a new network.”
“Holy shit.”
“I turned her down.”
He let out a slow breath. “Of course you did.”
“She was so mad…but it’s not what I want.”
“You’d be good at it.”
“Yeah, and maybe I’d be good at teaching English, or pole dancing, but that doesn’t make it my dream.”
“Pole dancing.”
“I’ve never tried it. I could be good.”
“Sure.” His smile was fond, just short of patronizing. She frowned and shifted to better hold his gaze.
“I can’t believe you almost died and you didn’t tell anybody.”
“I told you.”
“Not good enough. Who was with you in the hospital? I’m assuming you were in a hospital? Not just guessing about the whole heart attack thing?”
“Yeah, yeah, I was in a hospital. Nurses were with me. It was fine, I got myself home, I agreed to direct Justine’s movie, I came here. No problems.”
“Wait.”
Shit.
“This happened before you signed on as director? Sam. This happened before I was in L.A?”
send me a 👀 and i’ll post a snippet of art/writing that i never got around to finishing this year

Audio & Playlist for March 16, 2019: Non Male Musicians
Gee Vaucher, Joy de Vivre and Eve Libertine of Crass, photo from the collection of Gee Vaucher
This week on Uneasy Listening, it was the annual show featuring women musicians of all sorts! I just went ahead and did the full 3 hours on theme this time around although there’s a bit of a climax at the end of the 2nd hour for the purposes of syndication.
A lot of the time in the popular consciousness women musicians translates into bands with women singing (and maybe women playing other instruments, maybe not) and next year I’m going to make a concerted effort to play more bands that have women playing instruments but not necessarily singing. But at the same time, it’s nice to hear nothing but women’s voices for a solid stretch of time, especially when the music I like tends to be so male-dominated. And of course, the voice is an instrument and there is no less value to being a singer than to being any other kind of musician. Anyway! Thoughts! Here’s the show!

I just finished watching all of glow and WOW
It was so much funnier than the first season, I love seeing more of characters lives. Still craving more. There really is everything going on in this show, complex characters and a range of different women from different backgrounds and experiences. Seeing female relationships is so important!! the friendships are so pure and real. I loved seeing Sheila’s softer side. It was adorable. the scenes of all the girls caring for each other and supporting each other were my favorite .its such a powerful show for me too, it gives me confidence in my own body just by watching it.I wanna get up in the ring and slam someone body against the floor too!
The relationships are all really interesting to watch play out too. even though i’m a huge ruth x debbie shipper i did still enjoy sam x ruth together (i don’t necessarily ship them romanticly because i do for ruth/debbie way more and most likely always will , but i liked the close bond ruth and Sam have. its sweet). I’d like to see ruth/debbie get closer next season (that's if there is one), I want to see their relationship change now they both know what ruined it in the first place. I wanna see them laugh more, the scenes they were working together were magic and I think they work really welll with each other. Even though the scenes of her saying she basically should have slept with that man who invited her to his hotel room. I think that was cruel and I was just glad when she told Sam he was more understanding..I really hope she says sorry next season about tht. Cos she was so in the wrong there.
Also, can we talk about how heartbreaking it was too? when Justine had to leave with her mum I really felt for Sam. And that’s another thing, Sam really has grown on me. Underneath it all, he is a vulnerable man with a big heart I think. He is a loveable asshole. I liked how he didn’t push Justine away, he actually cared and really tried to get through to her.
That wasn’t the only heartbreaking thing though. I’m was so crushed when Florian died. I mean i was really rooting for Bash and Florian to get together. I saw how much he cared for him, It was so sad to see him have to hide that side of himself. Because I do believe Bash is struggling with his sexuality and by marrying Rhonda he was masking his pain and trying to push his true feelings for Florian aside. (I do think he likes Rhonda, I just don’t think he loves her, but I think that's clea. He just really wanted to help her). I like how in a show with strong female characters they still give us strong male characters too.
I mean, Cherry’s Keith is a sweetheart!!! I love seeing a supportive and loving relationship in the mix of all this drama. I loved how much he supports her and is there for her. It’s so nice to see.
I think my favourite part of the season for me was Yolanda and I didn’t expect her and Archie to get together. That was a wonderful surprise. So cute and soft!! I love how it was done too, it wasn’t a big deal that she’s a lesbian. It was just like fucking cool and she is fucking cool. And I love how she knows it too, I think all women should feel that way. She’s just such a great character and I love her.
Anyway, this season was wonderful and I loved all the great new wrestling moves too, It was dope as fuck. I mean the last episode of the season was fun and I literally wanted to go and watch the real GLOW because it was actually fun to watch and the cheesy jokes were light and actually funny. I mean, they are clearly not the best jokes but I actually enjoyed seeing the episode of the show. Any who, I fucking adored it, heres too more seasons of this show!! Netflix get on it, I’m as hooked as I ever was.

Out of Orbit
Sam x Ruth AU - What if Sam was still at the hotel when Ruth returned from Red Rock?
Knock-knock.
His door opens under her hand, surprising her. She takes a step forward, curiosity winning out, and finds him stuffing clothes into a battered suitcase on his bed.
“Sam?”
His head snaps up, fixing her with a scowl – albeit one that softens slightly as he realises who is disturbing him. “Fuck! Ruth. What’re you… how’d you get in here?”
“The door,” she cringes, gesturing pointlessly. Her brain catches up with what she’s seeing. “Are you leaving?”
He looks uncomfortable. “Yeah.”
“What? Why?”
“What do you mean, why?” He folds his arms now, defensive. “What the fuck do I have to stay for Ruth?
She squeaks in outrage. “Um, how about the fact the whole show needs retooling for the long haul? Tammé’s pulling back from Welfare Queen and taking on a promotor role. There’s change to some of the core cast personas. And Sheila, well, I don’t know exactly what happened but I don’t think she’s going to be a wolf all the time anymore, and… and…”
She trails off at the sight of his expression. It’s a face he only wears around her, when he thinks the others won’t see, and it’s one she’s never quite understood. Sad and soft and aching. She thinks the word for it might just be longing.
“Sounds to me like you have it covered.”
“But you’re the director!” she tries, a hail-Mary appeal directly to his vanity.
“Am I Ruth? Really?” He shakes his head. “I mean, I’m pretty sure the last major shake up of the show had fuck all to do with me.”
“That was− We had to−”
“Look, I’m not saying it was bad,” he continues, putting her out of her misery. “I just didn’t even know what was happening until I was in the middle of it.”
She casts about for another argument. “But I thought you were getting so much writing done here?”
His face only clouds at this. “Yeah. Well, me too. But... Look, I don’t know if you got a chance to read Justine’s screenplay on your trip…?”
“I –I did. It’s… You’re right. It’s… it’s really good.”
“Yeah,” he nods, “So, you know, I figured I’d go back to LA and help her shop it around a bit. I mean, there’s a few bridges there I haven’t burned yet. Maybe a chance for me to actually be fucking useful for a change.”
“Sam,” she starts. But all the words she rehearsed in her head on the drive back have evaporated, and she merely opens and closes her mouth pointlessly.
“Don’t pity me, alright?” he returns, misreading her panic. “I’ll be fine.”
“I’m not! I don’t! I just… I−I…”
I think that I’m in love with you. Why is it so hard to bring herself to say it?
“What, Ruth?”
“I don’t want you to go!” The words seem to erupt out of her, white-hot. “I’ll… I’ll miss you.”
Her outburst doesn’t quite have the effect she intended. He screws up his face. “What the fuck are you talking about? Ruth, we’ve barely spoken in the last six weeks.”
“I know! I know!” Not that their coolness is entirely on her, if they were to be honest about it. But pointing out his wounded pride is at least half the reason for their fractured relationship is probably not a winning strategy right now. “I just, I needed some space to think about… things…”
“Things?” he repeats, eyes narrowing. Never one to make things easy for her. For either of them.
“You know,” she manages, more hesitant now as she circles the unspeakable again. “What you said. A – a while ago.”
The silence that follows those weasel-words yawns wide. Somewhere, a long way away, she can hear the faint ding of the elevator bell. There is laughter in the corridor. The rest of the world spins on as they stand apart, trapped in this treacle-slow moment of time.
He swallows and breaks the spell. “When I told you that I’m in love with you?” It comes out thick, almost cracking. Like his own throat is tightening now.
“Yes.”
“So, what did you decide?”
He throws out the question like a challenge; like a man who’s tensed and ready for a blow. She wishes he wasn’t standing so far away. Things might be easier if she could just reach for him in this moment. As things are, her feet feel like they’re glued to the horrible hotel carpet.
She closes her eyes as more words seem to tear themselves from her. “I’m in love with you too,” she says. “But, I don’t know! Maybe I shouldn’t be, and so I’ve tried to hold myself back, and now everything is fucked up, and you’re leaving and−”
“Ruth?”
She opens her eyes to find him standing right in front of her. That look on his face again; sad and sweet.
“What?” she whispers. Unable to tear her eyes away from his.
“C’mere,” he says, taking her shoulders in his hands and leaning in to kiss her.
And this time; this time she doesn’t hop away. This time her lips meets his and something in her chest seems to catch; some rush overtaking her. His mouth opens under hers, and his face is in her hands as he wraps his arms around her. They kiss and they kiss. Like the world might just end if they stop. Like this soap-bubble of a reality will pop and return them to torturous orbit once again.
#sam x ruth#fanfic#there'll be speculative what could have been s4 fic from me i'm sure#but right now i'm just to sad#so i'm fixating on other could've beens#this might get more added to it#not sure right now#so wanted to share

George Duke
George Duke (January 12, 1946 – August 5, 2013) was an American musician, known as a keyboard pioneer, composer, singer and producer in both jazz and popular mainstream musical genres. He worked with numerous artists as arranger, music director, writer and co-writer, record producer and as a professor of music. He first made a name for himself with the album
The Jean-Luc Ponty Experience with the George Duke Trio
. He was known primarily for thirty-odd solo albums, of which 'A Brazilian Love Affair' from 1980 was his most popular, as well as for his collaborations with other musicians, particularly Frank Zappa.
Biography
Early life
George Duke was born in San Rafael, California. He was raised in Marin City. It was at the young age of 4 that Duke first became interested in the piano. His mother took him to see Duke Ellington in concert and subsequently told him about this experience. "I don't remember it too well," says George, "but my mother told me I went crazy. I ran around saying 'Get me a piano, get me a piano!'" He began his formal piano studies at the age of 7, at his local Baptist church. It was those early years that influenced his musical approach and feel, as well as his understanding of how music elicits emotion.
Duke attended Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley before earning a bachelor's degree in trombone and composition with a minor in contrabass, from the San Francisco Conservatory in 1967. Playing initially with friends from garages to local clubs, Duke quickly eased his way into session work, which refined his abilities and expanded his approach to music. He later earned his master's degree in composition from San Francisco State University. He also taught a course on Jazz And American Culture at Merritt College in Oakland.
Career
Beginning in 1967 Duke experimented further with jazz fusion, playing and recording with violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, as well as performing with the Don Ellis Orchestra, and Cannonball Adderley's band, while he acquainted himself with Frank Zappa. Duke appeared on a number of Frank Zappa's albums through the 1970s.
Frank Zappa played guitar solos on Duke's 1974 album, Feel - the instrumental "Old Slippers", and "Love" - credited as Obdewl'l X, possibly due to contractual reasons.
Duke covered two Zappa-composed songs on his 1975 album, The Aura Will Prevail, - "Uncle Remus" (co-written with Duke) and "Echidna's Arf" - that he had played on while a member of The Mothers on Zappa's albums.
A further Zappa connection occurred on Duke's other album from 1975, I Love the Blues She Heard Me Cry - which utilized Ruth Underwood, Tom Fowler, and Bruce Fowler from Zappa's Overnite Sensation band that Duke was a part of, along with Zappa-associate Johnny "Guitar" Watson and jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour.
Duke served as a record producer and composer on two instrumental tracks on Miles Davis albums: "Backyard Ritual" (from Tutu, 1986) and "Cobra" (from Amandla, 1989). He has also worked with a number of Brazilian musicians, including singer Milton Nascimento, percussionist Airto Moreira and singer Flora Purim. Lynn Davis and Sheila E appeared on Duke's late-1970s solo albumsDon't Let Go and Master of the Game.
Duke was prominent in the R&B genre, releasing funk-based songs like "Reach for It" and "Dukey Stick". In 1979 he traveled to Rio de Janeiro, where he recorded the album A Brazilian Love Affair, on which he employed singers Flora Purim and Milton Nascimento and percussionist Airto Moreira. The album contained music in a wide assortment of genres, including some Latin jazz and jazz-influenced material. From a jazz standpoint, the album's most noteworthy songs include Nascimento's "Cravo e Canela", "Love Reborn", and "Up from the Sea It Arose and Ate Rio in One Swift Bite". The track "Brazilian Sugar" was featured on the 2006 video game Dead or Alive Xtreme 2. Meanwhile, Nascimento's vocal on the ballad "Ao Que Vai Nascer" is an example of Brazilian pop at its most sensuous. The 1992 film Leap of Faith featured gospel songs and choir produced by George Duke and choir master Edwin Hawkins.
Duke worked as musical director at numerous large-scale musical events, including the Nelson Mandela tribute concert at Wembley Stadium, London in 1988. In 1989, he temporarily replaced Marcus Miller as musical director of NBC's late-night music performance program Sunday Night during its first season. Duke was also a judge for the second annual Independent Music Awards to support independent artists' careers.
Duke worked with Jill Scott on her third studio album, The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3; guesting on the track, "Whenever You're Around". In the summer of 2011, he put together a trio with David Sanborn and Marcus Miller for a tour across the US of more than 20 sold out shows.
Legacy and influence
Duke died August 5, 2013 in Los Angeles from chronic lymphocytic leukemia. He was 67 and was survived by his sons, Rashid and John. He was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills), following a memorial service. Attendees included notable friends Chaka Khan, Lynn Davis, Sheila E., Malcolm Jamal Warner, Stanley Clarke, Al Jarreau, Dianne Reeves, Jeffrey Osborne, Stevie Wonder, Marcus Miller, and Doug E. Fresh.
Duke's songs have been used by a wide variety of contemporary musicians in a wide array of genres. These include: "I Love You More", sampled by house music-act Daft Punk for their hit "Digital Love"; "Guilty", sampled by electronica music artist Mylo in his song "Guilty of Love" on Destroy Rock & Roll. "For Love", sampled by underground hip hop artist MF Doom on his track "I Hear Voices"; "Someday", sampled by hip hop artist/producer Kanye West for Common in "Break My Heart" on his "Finding Forever" album; "You and Me", sampled and used by soul/rhythm and blues influenced hip hop-producer 9th Wonder on the track "Spirit Of '94" on the album Spirit Of '94: Version 9.0 which he made with Kaze; and "Reach for It", sampled by Ice Cube in "True to the Game" on his Death Certificate album and Spice 1 in "In My Neighborhood" on his self-titled debut album, and sampled by W.C. & The Maad Circle (featuring Mack 10 & Ice Cube) in "West Up" on their "Curb Servin'" album. Madlib utilized Duke's "My Soul" on the track "Mingus" from his "Madlib Medicine Show #8: Advanced Jazz" album.
Duke was nominated for a Grammy as Best Contemporary Jazz Performance for After Hours in 1999. By popular vote, Duke was inducted into The SoulMusic Hall Of Fame at SoulMusic.com in December 2012.
On August 5, 2014, exactly one year after Duke’s death, Al Jarreau, Duke’s long-time friend, released an album titled, “My Old Friend: Celebrating George Duke”, as a tribute to his music. The album featured 10 songs, all written by Duke. Jarreau enlisted Gerald Albright, Stanley Clarke, Dr. John, Lalah Hathaway, Boney James, Marcus Miller, Jeffrey Osborne, Kelly Price, Dianne Reeves, Patrice Rushen and many others to help create this tribute to Duke’s music. The album was released on Concord Records and it garnered the 2015 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album.
