Brazilian Novelas (Telenovelas): Mulheres de Areia (1993) (Women of Sand) Pontal d’Areia is a small beach village with an economy based on fishing. When Ruth comes back to the village from a farm she was working as a school teacher, her personality clashes with her twin sister’s, Raquel. Ruth is sweet and kind, but Raquel is ambitious and hateful. This can be seen in the way both of them treat Tonho da Lua, a mentally challenged sand sculpturer. Ruth is his friend, while Raquel lives to mistreat him. Marcos, the son of a wealthy man, gets enamorated by Ruth. Raquel, wanting the man’s fortune to herself, makes him believe Ruth is not interested. Then, Marcos starts a relationship with Raquel, eventually marrying her. His father is not so happy about it. Virgilio Assunção, the owner of the only resort in Pontal and deputy mayor, is a vile man, obssessed with money and power. In the past, he drove his daughter’s fiancé to suicide, what made her hate him and act out. Now, Malu lives life on the “edge”, always desgracing the family’s name. As one of her pranks, she marries the cowboy Alaor, an ex-boyfriend of Ruth, having with him a push and pull relationship. In a trip they take together in a boat, Ruth and Raquel end up fighting and Raquel falls in the sea to her certain death. Ruth takes her sister’s place as the wife of her bevoled Marcos. But she didn’t expect Raquel and Marcos to be on the verge of divorce.
