Hi Alex! I'm a secular witch and I've been thinking of doing some more serious research about different kind of witchcraft and the history of magical practices- I was wondering if you had some sort of reading list of thing you'd recommend for beginners, or things that helped shape your personal philosophy of your craft? No prob if not of course! Your style of practice really resonates with me and I'd love to learn more :D
Sorry it took me so long to get to this! I don't have a personal list and generally ask people what they are into and recommend a book to suit that, but I hadn't thought of one that helped form my practice. I'd end of telling you to read all the Amber Chronicles to explain how I understand Chaos Magic or an old stack of Cometbus zines or a copy of Art of War by Sun Tzu. I also really enjoyed Ellen Dugan's books at the beginning of my practice (Cottage Witchery, Garden Witchery, etc) because she was the first author that didn't make me feel like I had to follow rules and she included personal anecdotes that really felt like applied magic.
Two of my new favorites for new witches that are more educational are Beginner's Guide to the Occult by Deborah Lipp and How To Study Magic by Sarah Lyons. Both of these books give a layout of the land and give you and idea of what there is to know without telling you what to do. I think a lot of people have an urge but don't know what direction to take, and these books are kind of like signposts.
For a great books for new witches I'll always suggest @breelandwalker Grovedaughter Witchery. I also enjoy Kelly-Ann Maddox's Rebel Witch, Folk Witchcraft by Roger J Horne and Six Ways by Aidan Watcher. From there I explore my neighborhood and notice seasonal changes, books about specific interests whether witchy or not. Then start to see the throughlines in your life and practice and see how they integrate into each other. Your ethics, values, and experiences do not exist in bubbles. I think practices are most satisfying when they celebrate the whole experience.
#and once you do that you can make anything into a rutal with meaning or without meaning#remember this was supposed to be fun

WIP Wednesday
Totally not doing this as an excuse to see other people's writing (/no pressure but also I am a greedy little cretin who devours people's writing like delicious treats)
This is for 'pretty boy snuff film' and probably long as hell for a wip snippet, but fuck it.
Tags: Max Patel PoV, themes of death, nothing too wild but it is pretty boy so y'know Jake's doing rough as fuck and everyone's struggling
For all that Max understands about the demons that continue to gnaw on his brain each night between the RDA's thundering fistful of bullets and hellfire, he knows that this one is going to haunt him.
The way he leapt out of the Samson, made his way across the rocks on Norm's blue heels, only to watch as Jake was sliced up under that flashlight beam.
Max's stomach had done a sudden colorful tango so violent he felt all the blood drain from his face when it exposed every inch of his friend's condition. Jake's arm thrown up to shield a face that was gaunt, limbs thinner than Jake had been even that first day in the avatar, skin wrapped tight as shrinkwrap stabbed through with more stripes of ferocious, pulsing red than dark blue. Max pinpointed what looked infected, what was half-healed, the hypertrophic ridges of the oldest wounds stitched by too much collagen, electrical burns stretched up from Jake's neck, to his chin, his cheek— all with a practiced eye, second nature.
Signs of atrophy, Jake's ankles shaking. Wobbling across the jetty's slick rocks far more than they should with each heavy-footed step, tail swinging listlessly without acting as a counterbalance, burns on the tips of Jake's ears, chunks cut out of pinna the way Max once notched cloned cattle ears back in undergraduate research labs. Pupils slightly different sizes under the harsh light Max cuts across Jake's frame just to be sure it's him because Jake's familiar-unfamiliar silhouette backlit by all those stars is moving the way hordes of the undead in old films do, bioluminescent freckles dulled as well. A blood curdling paranoia grips Max, mind firing illogical cylinders that he quickly places under control with a swift self-assurance that this is the man he's known for years and not some strange, warped imposter wearing Jake's skin.
Jake's skin….skin smeared with bruising like an impressionist painting, a deep gouge in Jake's upper lip. This small upside down triangle carved through the flesh exposing the barest hint of teeth. Leaving a deep trail of grey-pink slashed all the way up across his left cheek, through his brow. Jake falls to his knees as he hands off that RDA soldier, the enemy he clutches to his chest as if she's a daughter. A smile, desperate and stained in the warm clutch of eclipse's dark.
Jake's knees crack rock again because Max is a little too caught up in the mixture of relief, trepidation, the pound-thud of his heart as he presses the comm button on his mask and lets Neytiri know they found him. Inadvertently blinding Jake under the white sting of the flashlight in his hand with the movement, again. Against all odds; it's him, it is, he's alive, a given definition of safe.
Her voice cracks back through on a sob that is quickly wiped out the way Max has heard her smear her emotions into nothing for the past six months. After losing Neteyam, after losing Jake, after High Camp came under fire and they were forced to fight, to flee with their tails between their legs to the reefs of the Eastern Sea, the rest of the Omatikaya splitting off to New Kelutral. Families fractured and communities shattered on repeat.
Stumbling across First Reef like a miracle, setting up a base of operations with the rattle of death in their bones. After Max found her in Awa'atlu with Jake's rifle in her hands, field stripping the weapon with a jagged clumsiness that comes from burnt palms still healing, cleaning it as her bow sat gleaming in front of the marui's waxflower hearth fire–
She hasn't been the same, tackling the world with a bite to her fangs, a cold glint to her eyes, a ferocious protectiveness extended out across every blue body under her charge as a resistance leader with her face broadcasted across the metal snare web of the RDA's influence; Kill On Sight. Throwing herself into her work as healer and warrior without a proper night's sleep left to take. Her children watched carefully by the village, the aytsantu— Wanted, Marked for Death, targets painted on them, too— when she's not around, they grow cold and distant in their own ways, but he knows they're all trying desperately to cling to what they have left. Sometimes it feels like that's all they can do in-between the days that rumble with the apocalypse.
Rutal of the Ta'unui, Saeyla of the Omatikaya, sometimes even Ronal and Tonowari, many more coming together; all watching over the children. All coming together to make sure Neytiri eats, sleeps, and takes care of herself, Rutal especially, they seemed to be the one to get her to step away from her self-destructive path the most. Of all of them, Rutal was the one who managed to calm Bob down, Jake's ikran snapping at the others, drawing blood in a frenzy that first night after the explosion, when Bob had to practically be dragged away from circling the wreckage of the drilling rig over and over, screeches turned to whistled whines.
It only stood to reason Rutal would wind up being the one to eventually get Neytiri to sit down at the Metkayina mo'ara for a few hours to redo all her braids– shorter than they used to be when she was forced to chop off the parts that had burnt, the ones she cut in mourning.
And the scientists, they were trying their best. Him and Norm spent many a quiet day showing Tuk videos of her dad, letting her place the prettiest shells she found on the shrine near the BioLab's aluminum shack living quarters beside the rest of the numerous offerings for the deceased. The lost, the ones they have never been able to find. Pictures hung in homemade frames of lovingly crafted wood, beads, flax, symbols from their own beliefs, their gods carried over to this new world. Jake's photo rests there, one of his entire family, something taken back at the old settlement near Hell's Gate. Kiri, Lo'ak, Spider placing their own offerings, exchanging out the old fruits, the sweet meats, participating in something they don't have to, but sharing in it nonetheless.
Kiri always staring with a distant look, ears twitching as if she could hear something. Grace and Trudy and Sylwanin placed right by Jake, Tsu'tey's visor beside them.
Neytiri only stopping by with fresh bruises and scuffs from the latest guerilla fight as she would gather Tuk up in her arms, the girl tucked up under an Olangi saddle blanket, laying on a floor cushion that's too small for her by the shrine, curled around a holopad paused on the next video of her dad's human face. Neytiri lingering by the offerings, her eyes tracing a line across the ever increasing number, low tables built from driftwood to add to the space they had, she would cast a look towards Max as he picked up the holopad, shutting the screen off. Every time she had something like death wreathed around her shoulders as she then dipped her head, turning to duck through the airlock. Tail low, ears back.
Death chasing them relentlessly, change forcing their hands. To see Jake sprung back from the grave and not just his voice crackling through the comm is a haunting in itself, striking Max like a puncture wound, hurting in a way that doesn't make sense, horrifying in a way that he can't compute. Because death has its fangs sunk in Jake's neck, that much is obvious, holding him like a palulukan ready to make her kill. Untold fallout from something mapped across Jake's body, but all they have is what they can only guess.
And more, so much more, a rattling, wheezing of fluid in Jake's lungs that Max could hear through every second of Jake's sudden twist into begging as Norm held Jake up. Jake cowering, something that wrapped talons around Max's throat and made him seize in place at the sight as Norm locked panicked eyes with him. As Jake went from curling in, clutching at Norm's hand like a lost child with his eyes rolling, wide and seeing nothing, to blinking, shaking his head with a rough jerk, snarling, shoving Norm off. Snapping just like Bob had.
Wounded, with only threats spinning in his gold eyes.
Tagging @this-world-of-beautiful-monsters @kayjaydee17 @adrixagr and anyone else who sees this who wants to share their work! (Again no pressure!)
#Rutal as my OC who is my homage to the fact Na'vi would not have Western concepts of gender#he/they but in a way that is like untranslatable not man not woman not non-binary but Rutal#also just winging it writing Max's pov trying my best and i love him and need more writing for him out there#ignore the verbage on this first draft is me just being like sounds good makes shit up#also the way this is just the first initial impression of how bad Jake is and it just gets way worse from here and keeps going#and then after this chapter of Max and the others being like holy fuck this guy might actually be dying#it goes right back to Jakes pov and him trying to be like 'okay things Might be bad but its not that big of a deal'#pretty boy film#anatomy of a house

Do you have any thoughts about Agatha, Oedon chapel dweller? Why does he look like that? Why is he SO good and pure?
Very underrated character! He looks much like Masters of Rutals and Yahar'gul Kidnapper, something between, but he is also blind...
If you have time for this, I would be glad to know your opinion!
Well... I am pretty sure that he looks like this because bro is literally a Pthumerian...
youtube
sdhfhgdfds okay okay serious answer xd We've already figured by now that Agatha is not a legit name that appeared anywhere in official resources, but it used to be a placeholder name before official title of the character was revealed! As for the appearance:
These screenshots and other ones like these are from model viewing video from Sinclair Lore ( x ), and they're showing that he has really long legs underneath xd Extra tall height in Bloodborne is usually a Pthumerian thing. I can't speak for Gehrman or Gascoigne very much; Gehrman could have some Pthumerian blood mixed in, especially if he is a local to Yharnam, and Gascoigne simply could have had gigantism (real affliction!). 🤔 You brought up Labyrinth Ritekeepers and I am glad, because I also think he is the same type:
Very long arms, too! As for the blindness: his dialogue has a slight implication that he could not notice us coming since insense masked our scent! Let's also see which Pthumerians have white eyes:
Whereas Church Giant and Chapel Dweller do have completely white eyes, Loran Cleric has more obviously 'blinded' look... and Bell-Ringing woman seems to have it in "reverse", where her pupils are brighter than the whites o_o"
Ancient Bastard (Lost Child of Antiquity) is found in Pthumeru Ihyll dungeons and in Cainhurst (that descends from Pthumeru Ihyll as you remember), so I think their white eyes can count as Pthumerian moment too! Then we can see that hunters who often rely on blood can blind eyes while also exhausting them of any color, making them "white" (Ludwig and huntsmen have their right eye 'white', Djura has white eyes (with right one actually missing), Church Hunter of Despair and Church Doctor in Research Hall also have pure white eyes). I dunno what happened with Rotted Corpses, but since they have legs problems (not unlike beast Laurence) and fear fire, maybe they also were falling for beasthood but killed prematurely? 🤔
What I am thinking is, Loran Clerics might have had the blindness for the similar case of blood and beasthood, given the context! Some Pthumerians have 'normal' eyes, with white... whites (lol) and colored pupils:
While others have pitch black eyes, and Church Servants have unique dark blue eyes! And it looks like Ritekeepers have dark grey eyes, but not quote me on this one, maybe it is a lighting...
Thank you very much @val-of-the-north for having all these screenshots somehow @_@" I could never compile THIS many without your help
Basically, pure white eyes of some Pthumerians might be simply a variant of what could happen with their eyes, rather than blindness! If Loran Clerics, Church Servant, Bell-Ringing Woman, Nightmare Apostles and Snatchers are of any indication, Pthumerians do have pupils!Their eyes becoming pitch black, like stereotypical alien ones 👽 seem to be a quirk of the explicitly 'undead' Pthumerians, all of which are in Labyrinths! Nightmare Apostles seem to be not restricted by a single location (Patches can move between Nightmare and 'reality' and they also inhabit Micolash's Nightmare), and Snatches are most definitely still 'alive' and also wander in search for victims!
I'll say though that a gigantic Pthumerian and Ancient Bastard are both unusual for their kind! One is halfway-bat, another is... well, gigantic. (not counting Undead Giant, obviously). But a bat-like creature is likely to have poor eyesight, and giants seem to not notice the player much unless attacked! ...but also Ancient Bastards typically don't have a trouble noticing and ambushing us, and maybe Church Giants are simply slow because they're so massive. xd The only true clue towards Chapel Dweller being blind is just his dialogue about not having smelled how we appeared, yet with darn Pthumerians indicating visually whether they're blind or not is near impossible :') This can be just his eye color!
As for his nails, it seems like it is also a Pthumerian thing to have them very black. It could even be natural and not just their fashion! But in either case, notice that his are trimmed, and not long and sharp like others!
As for his red clothing? I think it parallels the thing where Bell-Ringing Women wear red instead of dark grey as they announce birth of The One Reborn, which travels into Cainhurst trend where there is burgundy variant of their trademark grey noble dress for pregnant women (that's why Arianna's stretches so well when she gets pregnant). I think he had something to do with birth! Maybe he used to be a maternity nurse? 🤔 At the same time, red fabric is a thing in Chalice Dungeons that is put in reverence under a skull of some presumably important people:
Maybe Chapel Dweller was a saint of their own order, or is a descendant of one! Maybe the skulls Pthumerian Ritekeepers are using belonged to these guys, so our Chapel Dweller could've been just one of these and they're a food chain. We just don't know! But notice that these altars have small replicas of statues we find all over Cainhurst. It makes me think about Ancient Bastards again... Maybe Chapel Dweller is just another unfortunate guy that was supposed to be very important if not straight up noble, but lost his roots.
^ I am not sure why he is so nice and sweet other than 'some people haven't lost their dignity and compassion even in all this chaos', but it is interesting how Arianna is the only one who actually talked to him! It is a bit lost in translation, though; according to the original script, it is more obvious that others look down on him:
( x ) (Aruki Mania has their own retranslation project, straight up doing translators work all alone FOR them, on Youtube.. Unfortunately, it is far not entire script, hence why I am using LP's more often, but Aruki Mania is also a professional and can be trusted with nuances!)
Regardless of Pthumerian ancestry playing role or Arianna simply being nicer than average Yharnamite, something sure is wrong! I doubt that Pthumerians are not very respected in Yharnam despite doing the same jobs as humans (Snatchers are doing the same thing as Yahar'gul Hunters and Church Servants patrol the streets same as the Church hunters). Not to mention fuckin' Logarius who 99.99% was a Pthumerian being Church's revered figure! I think it is the rumours:
Already discussed it here ( x ), to put it simply, Healing Church tried their best to ward off any positive attention from Oedon Chapel to cover up the formerly prospering Hunters business, as well as the entrance to Upper Cathedral! It is not his species, it is his occupation. So, sure average Yharnos think that Chapel Dweller is some crazy dude xd Except for Arianna, who is a Vileblood and doesn't get along with the Church anyhow. ....or she is JUST nice! But, Chapel Dweller's dialogue contains a LOT of self-deprecation, and he even blames himself if he gets attacked. Nothing about him is suspicious or unsettling, so whatever rumours are being spread, he clearly let them get to him..

Okay, thank you for the ask! I hope I gave you enough ideas! Sometimes I myself don't know which headcanon to settle with and all I can really do is offer what I've noticed so YOU pick the interpretation :')

I am pointing out that you are a hypocrite. You assume that the attempted suicide is made up because we didn't send you her private shit as proof, but you make your own FALSE claims without proof
And even if it was real I still wouldn't care and neither should anyone else, to. E. Rutally honest
A suicidal 15 year old saw a tiktok on social media and said "im going to sit down and make an account for this website i domt even use so I can scold and insult and chastise this full grown adult who i do not know because they said somethint i dont like. I am going to start an internet argument on purpose because i saw a tiktok and all my friends are doing it" and when I said something rude back to them, then it's my fault they got their feelings hurt? Yeah uh spoiler alert but that's a huge example right there why kids shouldn't be online. That kid is the one who initiated the interaction and bears responsibility for their own actions. Which again i don't believe or care anyways. In fact the more you guys bring it up the more entertained i am you think you can bully me into caring about a complete stranger
This is literally like if a complete stranger punched you and then complained you broke their nose swinging back. I'm just laughing at this point.

"Small house (...) with minimal ticks" youve got the right priorities. Hate those sons of bitches and no one gets how horrible they are outside of rutal areas
Theyre coming for everyone and they will rue the day they ignored the oncoming plague (im being dramatic. But i really hate those things)
all my homies HATE lyme disease 😤😤
I would love the outdoors more if they weren't so bad where we are!!! (idk what the average is but I don't want to find out)

CR : Fashion MEET du 19 janvier 2024
Reporting by zaza ! merci <3
» Question du défraiement pour ces conférences ?
